If you want in on the jokes, also watch I know what you did last summer before watching Scary Movie. Watch at least the first two of each franchise...
Welcome to the scream franchise. Next is scream 2, than scream 3, than scre4m, than, scream 5 (2022). And scream 6 2023. Enjoy. Can't wait for y'all to continue the franchise.
Vince, you look good with the facial hair. You should grow it out a little more... in my opinion.
Scream paved the way for horror movies to come back to the spotlight.. without it we wouldn't have at the 90s and early 2000s horror movies
@theperfectmix are you guys doing the whole franchise, or just the first?
“He looks super familiar”
That’s cause it’s Shaggy from Scooby Doo

Oh darlin, that's Mathew Lillard; please check out all his other movies before Scooby. I promise, you WONT be disappointed.
@@holycannoli9744 don’t worry.. I have, I’m a big Matthew Lillard fan, but judging by the fact that they didn’t recognize him from the beginning, I tried to figure out where they’d seen him from. Believe me I know Matthew Lillard lol

Scream completely changed the horror genre more than people realize. Elite franchise and I can’t wait to see the reactions to the rest.
Oh we know even now I rewatch every movie knowing what's going to happen and analyze the movie. These movies make me go deep in thought
It's revolutionary. This movie got me obsessed with slasher movies/series. I even got addicted to the MTV Scream series.
@@DavidMartinez-bz5rg I watched the TV show its okay
@@trixx_ray0078 I won't hype up the drama or all of the characters. But I very much loved the Brandon James killer. The kills are so good. The stalking and phone calls are epic. My only issue is the undertone of teen angst
Agreed!
We all thought Drew Barrymore would be the main character, made the opening scene so great because no one was safe after that. Similar to Psycho
I cannot believe decades later how involved Drew was bts. In fact it shocked me!! The fact she started her production company after it blows my mind!! - ruclips.net/video/C7q90h5PQvM/видео.htmlsi=5WxkdZIfpltcRhd2
Drew Barrymore was offered the main role but after reading the script she wanted the part she played
Sidney is safe every movie lol
She actually thought that a new actress should play that role as the survivor and most likely also didn’t want to be tied to a possible franchise makes sense, though I can only imagine the other movies by Drew Barrymore. We might not have gotten if she ended up being tied to scream.
@@aaronlimitless well she ended up doin Wedding Singer (1998) which am assuming was her very next role then obviously Charlies Angels after that
It’s one of the best horror films. The acting wasn’t actually horrendous..it’s just the direction. It’s supposed to be self aware and stuff. It’s genius.
Yeah I think younger people don’t understand satire
@@ChrisCollins068 not at all. Or Camp
@@CrownlessKing88what do you consider younger ? I’m 27 and I adore this movie but I grew up watching all the classics
@@NikkieTwix well I’m 36. Maybe 21-24?
@CrownlessKing88 I'm 21 and love Scream and satire in general. It's not a generational thing. It's more them specifically
You’re actually right. It is a parody. Well not exactly a parody but a satire. Scream is meant to intentionally poke fun at the horror genre and it is extremely meta, way before being meta was even a thing. Scream is a very self aware franchise which is made known to the viewer through characters like Randy. Satire aside, it’s not particularly “scary” but it is thrilling and because we don’t know who the killer is it’s got a nice mystery element to it also.
"Meta" was definitely already a thing, especially in horror. Fright Night or F13 Jason Lives is a perfect example
what is meta?
@@dess234 like being self aware of the medium and category that it’s in and being self referential about it. Ie: a horror film referencing horror film tropes during the film while still knowingly doing those same horror film tropes
It was always weird to me that scary movie parodied it, its like they didn't get the point of the original!
Funny thing is that it's not even Wes Craven's first meta movie. He made "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" a few years prior to Scream. And it's absurdly meta.. Like Craven appears as himself writing the movie that he's appearing in. Very "in your face" meta elements.
I'm not really surprised that Scream became the face of "meta horror" even though it wasn't Craven's first stab at something like it. While I like New Nightmare, I feel Scream just works better as a standalone movie.
I love how she thinks he's Johnny Depp when Johnny had his first role in A Nightmare on Elm Street and they're both works by Wes Craven and Billy looks like Johnny on purpose 😂
It wasn't on purpose at all. Craven himself said that he didn't see any similarities between Ulrich and Depp. He said that he saw them as completely different.
Craven said it wasn’t on purpose.
They both crawl through the windows of their girlfriends too.
It’s crazy how the voice actor for ghost faces voice embodied the personalities of Billy and Stu. Like you can always tell which one was supposed to be on the other side of the phone. A+ voice work
and the fact that he voices another villian Mojo Jojo
“The acting was horrendous”…what? The actors did a great job.
It's interesting that you said the acting was bad/cheesy and that the characters were corny because part of what set this film apart from slashers that came before was that the characters had more depth and the acting was really well done. I've never heard anyone say the acting was bad before.
It's because this whole movie was very specifically targeted at '90s audiences with knowledge of '70s-'80s horror. They can clock that the vibe includes elements of satire, but they're not familiar with the movies being satirized. They see non-naturalistic acting choices but they don't understand them in context.
It's like when Sydney comments about the bimbo who runs upstairs instead of out the door, then a few minutes later she runs upstairs instead of out the door. Sydney isn't a slasher-film bimbo, but she's still in a slasher film. She's smart enough to be unpredictable to us, but not so smart that she entirely breaks the genre. The dialog and acting is like that, too. It's _mostly_ naturalistic, but there's gap where the fun lives. If you're not into jazz, you'll think the musicians are too sloppy to get all the notes in the right places.
@@noodle_fc Thank you, this healed my soul after seeing the magic of this movie go completely over their heads
@@srahhh Actually, I think they did pretty well picking up on the vibe considering their background. I like jazz well enough despite being largely unfamiliar with what came before.
It is a little painful to hear "cheesy" applied to one's favorite movies. If it makes you feel better, I think that means something different to the youth. "Cheesy," as near as I can figure, is a catch-all designation for whenever the earnest-to-irony ratio feels a little off. Ironic sensibility is one of the most significant differences between generations. When you hear "cheesy," translate "I process the irony or earnestness I'm seeing differently than the film's contemporary audience did."
@@noodle_fc But they said the acting is horrendous! 😞I don't disagree with your sentiment though.
@@srahhh Did they say "horrendous"? Of course I gotta hard disagree if so
It's so funny to see people watching Scream who doesn't get the satirical aspect of the movie and have all the movie references jokes fly over their heads xD It's not cheesy or cringe, it's brilliant! This movie changed the horror scene in the 90s and after it forever!

Fun fact, Scream was based on real events. Over the course of 3 days in August of 1990, in Gainesville, Florida, Danny Rolling murdered 5 college students. What's even crazier is that there was a kid on campus who was covered in bruises and cuts and was immediately taken as a suspect and everyone was certain that it was him, turns out the kid was actually in a car crash and that's why he was covered in bruises and cuts.
It’s funny because Rose McGowan actually kept falling out of the cat door. They had to staple her shirt to the door lol.
Fun Fact: The man who directed Scream 1-4 Wes Craven is also the one who wrote and directed A Nightmare On Elm Street(1984) birthplace of Freddy Krueger.
He also plays the janitor in this movie dressed up as Freddy. Henry Winkler even calls him "Fred".
One of my favorite things about this movie is when Jamie Kennedy breaks the fourth wall and says look behind you, Jamie as he’s talking to Jamie Lee Curtis’s character
That's not breaking the fourth wall.
He doesn't break the fourth wall. At the time, Jamie wasn't that well known so most weren't laughing at the "meta"-ness of the moment in the theater like we do now because this film is the one that made him a star. Even if you realized his name was Jamie you were too clued into the film to really pay attention to the bit earlier on...
It's actually satire, not parody. Scary Movie is parody though. Scream comments on the horror trends of the time while being itself a horror movie with some comedic moments. That's why it's very meta. It's a horror movie where the characters know the tropes of horror movies. Scary Movie however is full on comedy and makes fun of various horror movies that came out around that time. That's what Scream is all about. It's commentary on the horror genre but mostly on the media's exploitation of other people's tragedies. You guys should watch the sequels. They're fun whodunnits and the story continues. This is not the end.
It was meant to be a parody.
No
One of my favorite horror franchises. It straddles that line between satire and seriousness so well that you honestly can't tell sometimes whether a scene is supposed to be funny or scary, and it really works. In a decade that was really lacking in good horror films, this certainly reminded audiences why slashers are so fun to watch.
I hope someone told you that you also had need to have seen "Scream 2", "I Know What You Did Last Summer", "The Exorcist", The Sixth Sense", "The Blair Witch Project", "The Usual Suspects" & know what Bullet-time is from "The Matrix" & the film "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" as well to get the majority of the jokes in "Scary Movie" not just "Scream" 1996..It's alot 🤯 of movie references & there are more but they are subtle
The Exorcist is needed for Scary Movie 2 not the original
@@notyouraveragebear9326 Incorrect. "It was my first keg party Bobby!!" Is a direct reference & Bobby was watching The Exorcist before breaking in through the window like Billy in Scream
Also the first “Final Destination” and “Save the Last Dance” 😂
The best thing about scream movies is they don’t take themselves too seriously. They do tend to take the piss out themselves a lot imo.
Scream basically changed horror movies in the 90s. It was a meta-slasher-whodunit that was self-aware and funny along with being scary. It singlehandedly revived slasher films as well.
Linda Blair, star of The Exorcist, asks: "So how does it feel to be almost brutally butchered?" Brilliant cameo.
You need to check out Scream 2, Scream 3, Scream 4, Scream 5, and Scream 6. . . FUN FACT, this movie's original title was Scary Movie
Scary movie was parody of this and it came out on the year 2000
@@Dudeeeeee12yeah but the original title of scream was supposed to be Scary Movie, that's where they got the parody movie title "Scary Movie" since the parody series is of Scream originally. idk if your comment was supposed to be a reply to this or on it's own.
@@sunflowermads5604bonus fun fact Ghostface is returning in scary movie 6
1. What I like most about doing this is watching people overthink it.
2. Cell phones weren't prevalent in 1996.
3. Dewey's superior IS the janitor since Wes Craven did the cameo as Freddy Kruger.
4. The principal was played by the Fonz/Henry Winkler. (one of Fonzie's Jacket is on a coat hanger in the closet)
5. Tatum/Rose McGowan as long as I have a face.
6. I love how the inept killer keeps getting his ass kicked
7. Fun fact: The reporter lady that ends saying "People have the right to know." is played by Linda Blair/Reagan from "The Exorcist".

Honestly, none of the movies in this franchise are actually bad. One of the only movie franchises you can say that about.
6 is awful. I think Hollywood forgot that knives are dangerous. What happens to Kirby, Gale...the twins would kill a fucking rhino. Utterly ridiculous and showing kids that if they push a sharp object in someone, it's not all that. 1, 4 and 5 are good. 2 and 3 are ok, definitely have their moments...
@@Andy-BodhiI’m not big on 6 either. (Or 5 for that matter honestly but I guess I like it better than 6.) I’m excited to see what 7 brings us given what little we do know!
Fun Fact: at 21:14 the janitor that looks like Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street is actually Director Wes Craven himself
That's the best part of the Scream movies. They're cheesy on purpose but still manage to be kinda scarey. The main deal with these movies is trying to figure out the killer(s) before they get revealed at the end. Scream 2 is even better, honestly.
40:12 correct, it's a horror movie that makes fun of horror movie tropes. It's a self aware movie so the directing and writing is intentional, that is what makes this franchise so brilliant. Every 90s slasher after this tried to copy, it revamped a whole new genre after this.
SCREAM is a SATIRE… not paraody..there’s a difference. Also, they were not making fun of horror movies of the past, they were honoring them in a more META and self-aware way.

There are A LOT of scary movies referenced in Scary Movie that you should probably watch first, as with any parody.
I vote yes for completing the Scream franchise!
You should definitely watch the entire franchise.
I LOVE you guys... and you're entitled to your opinions. You can't hear my tone, but I'm not mad, not even a little. I'm just disappointed/confused.
Scream isn't your thing, and that's fine. I'm not a fan of some movies that other people love, it's subjective. It's written as a horror/comedy "spoof". It's supposed to be over the top cringe. Like, you watched it, you know what the vibe was.
Just something to think about. There IS a reason that this franchise is soon to have 7 movies. And that Scream 6 killed at the box office. Scream has a HUGE fan base. Which is partly why "Scary Movie" was SO good. They had a lot to play off of.
I know you probably won't react to the other Scream movies, because why would you?!? I just hope after thinking about it, you pull back on some of the hate. I've watched a ton of Scream 1996 reactions, and you were the first channel to rip on it like this...

Ok update:
Yes this movie is somewhat a parody of itself, in the sense it's kind of a commentary on the horror movie genre as a whole. The amount of references to other classic horror movies is what (for me anyways) makes this one of the best movies ever.
I hope you do the whole franchise. They are all good in their own ways!

“Don’t fuck with the original.” 👻🔪
Scream was made more of a satire for horror movies of the past, some people confuses it with a “parody”… a parody is a spoof or making fun of other movies which is more SCARY MOVIES genre. SCREAM did have some comedy..it was still well balanced with the horror/intensity/seriousness too. Also, they were more honoring the horror movie genre than making fun of it. This movie was more self-aware and very META when they made the SCREAM franchise. Also, the acting was not horrendous…it was genius to me and the actors especially Matthew Lillard who played Stu (the other real killer) really sold his character as being psychotic, but he still has this foolish/childish nature where he was easily manipulated by Billy to be his accomplice.
SCREAM really did revive the horror genre at that time where you really didn’t know who the real killer/killers was until the end. Usually there is only 1 killer in horror movies…SCREAM broke the mold and kept the audience guessing and had two killers.
But again…people have their preference in terms of horror movies and acting styles which is fine too. I just wanted to give me perspective and why SCREAM is such a huge and well loved franchise and how it really changed the horror genre for slasher films.
The Scream franchise is known for a few things: 1) it’s “meta”, 2) it makes fun of itself, and 3) they always have big names for the cast.
Hope you guys watch and react to all of the Scream movies!
You should also watch I Know What You Did Last Summer before watching Scary Movie, theyre is a lot of references from there
fun fact: everyone who breaks the rules survives in the end: Sidney has sex, Randy drinks alcohol, and Gale says "I'll be right back"
Matthew Lillard is the one play as Shaggy Rogers in Scooby-Doo Animated series & live action movies.
One of my fav movie franchises ever. Most of the movies are pretty damn entertaining. I actually met Roger L Jackson (the voice of Ghostface) a few months ago in Chicago. He signed my Ghostface mask on the mouth part with a red sharpie, so dope. ALSO, this movie lovingly makes fun of horror movies while being somewhat scary.
My buddy was with Dewey(David Arquette) and taking pictures this past weekend at the Carolina Fear Fest in Raleigh, NC.
Fun fact: This movie is singlehandedly responsible for Caller ID existing as it does today. Prior to this movie coming out, Caller ID was rarely ever used, by barely anyone. This movie completely changed that and its even poked at in the opening of Scream 2 despite filming for Scream 2 starting the same year this movie released

It's called Satire. This movie forever changed the horror genre. The acting was on point. It had a great cast.
Wes Craven knew exactly what he was doing the whole time.
Yes, you guys are indeed right. Scream is supposed to be a parody on horror films. But it does mask itself sometimes to be absolutely brutal and terrifying. Wes Craven made Nightmare on Elm Street (Which does star Johnny Depp in his first role) Wes was the janitor in the principal scene and he’s dressed up as the killer from Nightmare on Elm Street haha. So no cap it’s definitely supposed to be a parody.
It’s actually more satirical. The scary movie movies are parody
Yup satire

I haven’t watched this reaction yet as of typing this but I just wanted to comment and say I really hope you guys continue the rest of the franchise. I of course would watch every video.
As others have said, it's satire, not a parody. Very harsh comment about the acting; they were all spot on playing the stereotypes. This was both a reinvention of the genre and a huge homage at the same time. Maybe today that's not as apparent.
I think when people go in knowing that this movie was parodied, it changes their perception of the movie. Which is a little sad, I hope people can still enjoy this movie as it was written.
It didn't help that they hadn't both seen all of the classic horror movies it was paying homage to, and seemed to just be getting it out of the way so they could watch... Scary Movie. 😬 Which presumably they'll understand even less, but good luck to them, maybe they'll prefer something that takes less brainpower.
“Yeah It’s got two islands” 10:40 I ⚰️⚰️⚰️⚰️🤣 again
The actors name is skeet Ulrich, who plays Billy Loomis and fun fact he was actually hired on because of the resemblance of Johnny Depp in nightmare on Elm Street, and that was the inspiration which you know is both directed by Wes Craven R.I.P

This is one of those movies that you almost have to do some homework for beforehand. Scream is very "meta" and there are so many references to the horror movie genre and its well-worn tropes. It even spoils the twist from Friday The 13th in the first scene because this movie assumes that the audience has already seen it.

It is supposed to take place in Northern California. They used the towns of Santa Rosa, Glen Ellen, Tomales, Healdsburg and Sonoma to film.
The heyday for horror was the 80s. Scream was definitely making fun of the tropes. It was Scream that sort of jump started the 90s horror run. Scream 2 is my favorite but the whole series is good. Each movie sort of represents different horror tropes (sequels, trillogies, reboots, etc).

26:36 fun fact, the actress actually did fit through the cat door so they had to nail her shirt to it so she couldn’t get threw. None of the onscreen cast was the voice of ghostface aka the killer it was another actor named Roger Jackson who’s other most famous roll was Mojo Jojo on the power puff girls, the cast didn’t even meet Roger Jackson until the fourth movie, Wes Craven didn’t want them to meet so the voice would be creepier to them, Roger Jackson had a tv playing the live feed of the actors in a deferent room so he could deliver his lines in real time without the cast knowing who it was.
The great thing about Scream was it was so self aware, in that it even though it is a serious subject it constantly refers to old Horror films and makes reference to the plot of them etc. It also spawned superb sequels, each on of them is great too and well worth a watch. You gotta do the sequels, the writing is just so clever. Wes Craven killing off the most famous person in the film in the first few minutes. An incredible amount of such famous female actors in the Scream films just too many to mention.
When the camera man gets his throat smacked , Vince’s “mutha fuhhh” screamed ving rhames to me 😂
The way you folks reacted at 31:25 had me bursting 😂
Y’all should watch the entire franchise
31:51 - A movie slasher sneaking up on an actor named Jamie who’s watching a movie slasher sneaking up on an actor named Jamie. One of the best meta moments in the entire franchise.
I think y’all would like the whole series. There really aren’t any bad movies in the franchise. It manages to stay fresh by parodying trends in horror movie technology and tropes… including, in later movies, trends and tropes that only exist BECAUSE of the Scream franchise.
