Odisha has about one-third of its land covered with forests, supporting around 86 species of Mammals, 473 species of birds, 110 species of Mangrove plants and 350 species of medicinal plants. The rich biodiversity of the state is conserved mainly through a network of Protected Areas comprising two National Parks and 18 sanctuaries. This network is complemented by wilderness areas, wetlands and other bio-diverse sites along the coast, including mangroves and turtle rookeries. Elephants, tigers, leopards, blackbucks, crocodiles, Olive Ridley turtles, Irrawady dolphins and migratory birds together make for a sumptuous visual feast for those who revel in Nature. The best incentive for the Nature-minded tourist is the unique opportunities that the state offers in eco tourism.

Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh are the underrated start of India. I don't want them to be industrialize but instead become a tourist hub just like Kerala. They are the perfect place for eco tourism and vacations.

Eco tourism got a boost in Orissa on a question to Sri Jagmohan,ex-minister of tourism and culture at centre.And the question was: "Honorable minister,Coastarica in Central America earns 28% of its GDP from eco-tourism.What is your plan for Orissa and North-East".He fired the state government instantly saying that it was wrong to expect centre to do everything.State must take the initiative.So enraged was he that the then tourism minister and chief secretary ran to one corner on the dias to save themselves of his ire.The chief secretary hid behind the minister.Years have passed by.Odisha has one UNESCO bio-sphere reserve,two sites in the tentative list of UNESCO under Natural Heritage category .When you are watching the video,do not forget that started it all.Later Jagmohan took out full page ads
In newspapers about the potential of eco-tourism in the North-East.I still have treasured those news papers along with the questionnaire
that gave fillip to eco/nature tourism in Odisha.

Odisha is the perfect spot to get drenched in the nature’s endowments. Wildlife, lush green forests and zoological parks are scattered throughout the state. Wild life in Odisha is an integral part of its tourism. The Simlipal National Park, the centre of Mayurbhanj district in the North-Eastern part of Odisha is surrounded by deciduous trees and sal forests. Characterised by thick wooden slopes, ridges, lavish grassland and striking waterfalls; the park is situated amidst scenic hills. It provides a safe refuge to the leopards, elephant, langur, flying squirrel, porcupine, barking and spotted deer, sloth bear mongoose, malabar pied hornbill, Indian trogon, red jungle fowl, hill mynah and tigers.
