4 Must Try Baits When Bass Refuse To Bite!

- Do your bass have lock jaw? Ours too! Here are the baits we turn to when absolutely nothing is working. When the going gets tough, confidence is everything. These 4 baits in very specific colors are what we turn to when the bass just don't want to bite.
Spring bass fishing is full of big bass, fun patterns, and aggressive strikes. Its also full of cold fronts, rising water, post-frontal wind storms, and freezing temperatures. When the tables are turned against you its important to know what to do next. Matt and Tim were faced with very tough conditions today and adapted accordingly. While the bite remained tough, they fished with confidence knowing they were making the right choices in spite of the circumstances.
The next time you're faced with less than ideal weather, turn to finesse baits to get bit. You know how much we love to power fish but some days it just isn't worth it. Below is a break down of the 4 baits we confidently tied on in pursuit of lock-jawed bass.

If you plan to do any shopping, using our links before doing your shopping at Tackle Warehouse is the single greatest way to support us! You won't be able to even see a difference but they'll know you're one of us!
I’ll come along anytime! Totally agree that being on the water is better than any other use of time. When fishing is slow you also get to mercilessly “razz” your fishing buddy. The best buddies don’t care they just give it back two fold!
Learning to show up to the lake with a blank slate mindset and letting the lake/weather dictate how I’m going to fish has made fishing more enjoyable and I believe made me a better fisherman. Having a game plan for technique or spots to go is obviously important, but the times I try to strategize or game plan the whole day it usually ends in disappointment...great video and love y’all’s content!
Thanks for showing us what it’s like to have a day that “didn’t go according to plan”. I think we all need to remember there will be days that you just don’t get the results you want. Key is not to take it so seriously that you get bummed out. After all, it’s still time spent fishing even if you’re not catching.
Matt and Tim, I am an avid follower of your channel, you guys inspire me so much and Monday through Friday I watch your videos and get so excited for Saturday when I can get in my boat and get out on the water, thank you so much for your content and you’ll never know how much of a role model you could be to someone you don’t even know! If you ever come out to the southeast again please do a meet and greet! My home lakes are Guntersville, anywhere on the coosa River, and Lewis smith lake. Would love to meet you guys one day! Until then, keep up the great fishing info and content!!
Can't thank you guys enough. Hands down best fishing channel on RUclips.
Matt, said something in this video that caught my attention, and that was the phrase "Double Duty", when referring to rod choice. I am a bank and kayak angler, so I'm limited as to how many rods I can have with me at any one time.
Have you and Tim ever done a fishing rod "Double Duty" video, where you talked about a certain rod category (example: 7 ft. Medium Heavy / Fast), and what techniques it can pull double duty on? I feel like the information has been touched on, across certain videos, at certain times, but it's kind of spread out and fragmented.
Thanks, guys! You have been one of my constant channels in the 5 years that I've been bass fishing. Keep the awesome videos coming!
I was thinking about this like last month, giving us a rundown on the bare minimum rod selection to get all or most techniques effectively fished.
J Holl There are a lot of rods that you can use for several techniques, but I would have to say a medium heavy/fast action rod in the 6’10” to 7’2” range is most versatile. When I was in high school and even in part of college I had a 7’ medium heavy/fast and used it for literally everything and it worked well. I threw spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, jigs, topwater, certain cranks, and even heavy cover frogging. Was it the perfect rod for everything? No. Frogging with it especially was hard getting a fish in with all the cover but I did it. To this day I have more rods 6’10 to 7’ medium heavy/fast than anything and I have nine casting rods. They are hands down the most versatile. I also double up a 7’4” heavy for basically anything I consider heavy duty. Frogging, light to medium flipping, jigs, a rigs. The only rods that I have that I use for “dedicated purposes” are my cranking rods and my Swimbait rod. As far as spinning goes, for most of my finesse I have confidence just using a drop shot rod, aka a 6’9”-6’10” medium light fast for everything I finesse fish, drop shot, Ned rigs, Neko, and lighter shaky heads, wacky rigs.
J Holl ~ Bryon speaks the truth...
I understand all this, and appreciate the input, guys. I was trying to get Matt and Tim's input on it. Much of what you have mentioned, I already do. Thank you, though.
my experience.
medium/light : lipless cranks.. smaller spinnerbaits.. small whopper plopper, jerkbaits, small swimbaits, all finesse rigs.
medium heavy: bigger spinners, bigger whopper ploppers, jerkbaits, bigger swimbaits, chatterbaits,
the only specialty rod i would get is if it was for the biggest of swimbaits.
and also this is based if you are fishing open water, rocky bottoms, cliffs, compared to toolies, areas with lots of lumber, ect.
so whatever you use the most of adjust your arsenal appropriately also base off what you are fishing.. though if you have already been doing this you are already probably already learning what you need the most. might already be set up perfectly also. i like to go as light as possible.. you will feel the bites a lot better and it gives a lot more action to your baits overall. but you know with like a medium/light with a big spinner bait it will be flexed like you have a fish on as you reel it back in.. you can do it but ya.
Great video to keep us fishermen and women stooked. I'm off tomorrow definitely going to hit um with my drop shot it's been working for me. I was tempted to go today but make sense the fish are not ready but tomorrow oh ya can't wait. I'm in AZ and that storm shut um down here too and I'm near the Colorado and gila river noticed the movement of fish thanks guys
Love to see y’all smash em, but also is nice to see you struggle. Glad to see that y’all still used that as a lesson to all of us who struggle a lot more than you guys!
It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who can go fishing (not catching lol) and not do all that well sometimes. I appreciate y’all and the instruction that you give. I’ve been fishing since I could hold a rod in my hands and I’m 45. I still don’t have the knowledge that y’all have but y’all are constantly teaching me and making me a better fisherman! God bless y’all and keep it up!
Love the "real fishing" versions for sure guys. We enjoy filming those episodes too. Great work and absolutely the best technique switch you can pull this time of year.
Those are definitely the go-to's. Even with it being that tough you still got one. That is a testament to just sticking with what you know works and the recipe of persistence+consistency+confidence = results. Never tried that color you were using, but sounds like it could be my secret weapon this year. One of the things that makes your channel stand out is that you do it together and work together. Beyond the fishing tips, just seeing that displayed on video after video is pretty cool and encouraging. Hope you guys have a good day. And continue to keep up the good work. God Bless you. 👍
When is YourNextCast gonna be? 😎
@@gregc2621 Haha, hopefully in a week or two, but if you'd like, you can check out the most recent video I posted yesterday. Lot of good fish catches there. Finesse technique with a Gary Yamamoto Single Tail Grub (Green Pumpkin) 😉
I needed to see this. I’ve only caught two fish since November.
Better than me, I've blanked out so far for 2020.
Skunked since December....I feel ya
It's been tough this winter for us "average fisherman and women".
Also only 2 ..
Yeap! It’s winter time, 42-44 degree water, blue bird sky’s, and post frontal conditions. If I catch 3 or 4 fish in day i call it a successful. Great video guys.
I just retired and started to learn bass fishing. Watching your videos have helped me select gear and baits along with how to fish for bass. I really look forward to the videos and have used them. Im in So cal so limited to lakes but the finese fishing has been working
Thanks Matt and Tim for all the valuable info! Last weekend I landed 2 bass on one bait on a bold colored crank bait! One on each treble! It was unreal, thought I had a monster hooked. Never would of had the confidence to throw a crank bait without your videos. Thanks again!
Matt and Tim! I'm so thankful you guys had a tough day, and I could see your reaction. Ive always known winter fishing is tough, but I'm still upset when I blank. It was awesome to see you guys highlight the positives of your evening!
Id like to see more videos like this, focusing on post storm/murky water personally. Here in Iowa we get a lot of storms in the spring, and sometimes all year basically and some of our lakes never get a real opportunity to bounce back from one round of weather before the next rolls in. You guys have helped me learn a lot and are my favorite fishing information source. Thank you for the time you take to do this.
It is great to see you guys keep it real by showing us that you, from time to time, experience the same crappy fishing as us regular Joe's. You guys have taught us so much over past few seasons. Thank you! You should come back East sometime and teach us how to fish our Finger Lakes in upsate New York.
Hey you guys are keeping it real with this one. The little north Jersey ponds that I fish are stingy as heck. A three fish day is a killing for me and a 5 pounder is PB time. But you guys have taught me how to be a better Fisherman both in technique and attitude. It is called fishing not catching and what a blessing to be able to get out in nature and wet some line. Better luck next time. And thanks for taking us along.
Enjoy seeing and hearing about tough conditions, seeing folks always catch and never struggle is sometimes a downer because it’s just not reality.
The only channel I hit the like button before I watch. Thanks guys!
Great timing on this gents! Cold, wind, and rain have been hitting East Tx pretty good lately. Really is a matter of grinding it out and being thankful for any and every bite
Great video guys. Love the MM plastic roboworm, and SK dream shot is killer too. Thanks for the good info. Keep 'em coming!
I had a grinder like that on lake casitas while on vacation the other day. Not looking forward to going back the Chicago and the cold. You California guys got it going on.
I struggled on Monday. Caught a 3.4 on a Keitech jig within 15 mins on the lake and then nothing for the next 4 hours. It's brutal this time of year. Under spin, shakeyhead, Jerkbait, jigs, just couldn't get em to bite after the first fish. But it was nice just being out there. Thanks guys!!!
Hey tactical bassin! I caught a swamp donkey on the dark sleeper yesterday in a pond before getting kick out! Thanks for all the knowledge
Thanks for the video guy's , I've been bass fishing for 30 years , and still have a trip now and then I can't get a bite . Thanks for keeping it's real tight lines .
You guys should make a video showing when to fish the sunny bank vs the shaded. Morning vs afternoon. Etc. I know it's a hard one but I think you guys could give us amateurs some pro tips. P.S. thanks for the snag Matt. That made my day 🤣
This video was great. Just what I needed to cheer me up and teach me a good lesson. Thanks guys! 👍🏼
It was good to see I am not the only one struggling in this madness. Although I am at a big disadvantage without a boat. Good video guys! Meanwhile I am still hoping to land my first one of the new year!
Typical fishing day for me, except you got bit. Appreciate you guys showing that even the Pros don't always slay em.
When I was younger I use to loosen the brake on my buddies baitcast reels hahaha good ol days.
got skunked again 0-4 in 2020 up here in MA. these 35* water temps are wooping my butt. I got 1 big perch in 4 trips. got the new tactical cranks coming tomorrow. if they can catch them up here they will work any where lol. can't wait to try them!
You guys are pretty funny and have been filming for years, fishing doesn’t always go as planed nor filming with that I’m sure you could throw togeather a good tactical Bassin bloopers video. Just an idea for you maybe an April fools video idk. Love your channel
Awesome channel by the way y’all are the greatest fishing channel and have taught me a ton 💪
Wow...I don't believe this; never seen you two struggle as you have in this video! Sad to say but this actually made me not beat myself up and hang my head low for not catching bass. Fishing in the east has been a real struggle for me. I'd much rather fish in crystal clear pristine waters than fishing in these muddy, murky waters...lol! Missing the western waterways!!! Believe me when I say; "The struggle is real!"
I fished there at Clearlake a week and a half ago got the skunk. Gonna be back this weekend to try again! Clearlake Bassin!
The water is like glass! Smooth
Good honest fishing video I love this video 👍🏼
Matt, always good to see that you guys struggle sometimes too. :-) Best channel on RUclips.
Okay so after a day like this, holy crap you two are human after all lololol. Thanks for the honesty of the tough conditions and for all of the amazing videos you have made. As soon as I can, I'm going to throw an s waver to look for my first glide bait fish using your advice on this channel.
I love how Matt always says "My jerkbait rod doubles really well..." and insert 5 other techniques lololol double is TWO Matt!! Good stuff!
Good video on "surving" the tuff days. I might jave added the blade bait would be about my only other option
You guys make it look so easy! Can you guys fish lake mead water ? Feels like the bass fishing here is so hard.
As always you guys are telling like it is! Been there many of times! Thanks guys
WOW, Been watching TaticalBassin for almost 10yr now and still amazed and learning from your videos! Thanks for the patience of your families and thanks Matt and Tim! Please do early spring bank fishing!
It’s actually nice to see you guys struggle just like us. Lol!! You guys are awesome regardless of your smashing them or riding the strugglebus. #thewintergrind
Great video! Like Tim said its fishing. Thanks guys!
We all have bad days, even in the winter. lol That's why I decided to not fish this winter, too cold. And now I'am taking care of my new puppy. He'll be in the boat come March. :-)
As soon as these fish move in close enough for bank anglers to get a shot at them it would be nice to see another BANK FISHING video.
This Feb is sucking here in KY much like last year, constant rain, flooding rivers and muddy lakes. Tailwater or nothing!
Where are you at in ky? Louisville here
Danville here. Retired a couple of years ago, been trying to catch up on all the fishing I missed! Got family in Louisville, and used to come up there a lot when I was playing music, more often than not at Stevie Ray's on Main.
Barren river lake boys! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
A Mojo and Jika Rig are a couple additional options when it gets tough... I’ve had days where I couldn’t get bit on a Dropshot and the Jika and/or the Mojo worked well in the same areas... The tougher the bite, the more detail matters ~
I really like your videos. I’ve learned a lot. Could you try to always mention the depth you catch fish and whether or not there is grass and what depth grass stops in the water column. That’s what I can’t seem to figure out is what and how to fish grass when it’s submerged in say 30 ft of water but 10 ft from the surface. Thanks. Keep up the good videos
Whenever you recommend the Shimano Stradic FL, you always recommend the 2500. Why not the 3000? The 3000 has more line capacity and carbon fiber vs felt drag washers. From an uneducated view it seems like, extra line - sounds like a good thing and cabon fiber washers - sounds more durable. But there has to be a good reason why you always recommend the Stradic FL 2500...I value your professional knowledge and would like to learn why. Thank you for your time.
I had a Stradic FK 2500 and my current Excense 3000MHG casts a lot smoother, the body size is the same as a 2500 just with a 3000 spool. I would get a 3000 imo
Only reason to use a smaller reel would be that it’s lighter. But tackle warehouse has both the 2500 and 3000 listed as 7.9 ounces. Once you go up to the 4000 the reel gets noticeably bigger. I use my 3000s for bass and inshore fishing. Honestly a 3000 is kinda overkill for bass, I’ve caught 40 inch redfish and cobia on mine but the reel doesn’t feel big and it balances nice on any rod in the 7 foot medium range I’ve put them on so I’ve always used mine for bass also.
If youre in the south and you could be catching 10lb bass, big bowfin, mayne a giant gar by accident, the 3000 rules but in like 9/10 cases you dont need the extra spool capacity
Great video guys! Its definitely tough right now!I can’t wait till Pre spawn!!!!Thanks for the tips as always!!!
Nothing like keeping it real, and a good sunset above the water, doesn’t mean a good hookset below and we all have had the same experience, especially this time of year when the weather is so inconsistent. Good call on getting out on the water. On a little different subject , have you guys tested out,or have knowledge of the Shimano/Jackall Poison Adrenea casting rods, I’m looking at 1 or 2 for this season. Thanks guys👍
Matt gets hung up, and gives rod to Tim. Hilarious.
Suggestion to viewers: After watching, listening, and learning, watch video with sound off. It's interesting to watch how SLOW they fish when they say SLOW. I know when I get antsy, I inadvertently speed up retrieve. Watching these guys work baits is as valuable as the things they say.
way to "pass the buck" with the snagged line.. LOL good stuff, im still dying!!!
Another great vid regardless of the number of fish caught. Keep it up!
Can y’all do a video on cold muddy water falling? I fill like that’s something a lot of people struggle with! Thanks!
I agree
Yes... this please!
This would be a great topic to discuss. As I said above, the lakes I've been fishing here in NC (Shearon Harris and Jordan) have been very muddy and cold (50-56 deg F) for quite some time now because of all the rain and cold fronts blowing through this area. Haven't caught a fish since Dec............
@@BluntTruth7 I'm in NC as well buddy live in kernersville even blewes lake is muddy and the fish are shut down.
Fellas they live in Cali so cold and muddy is about the furthest thing from most of their fishing. Not that they couldn’t do a vid elsewhere.
The best point made was early in the video... recognizing the conditions were going to dictate a finesse approach. Many times I have wasted half a day going after the reaction bite when I should have went finesse from the beginning. That might make for a great video - finesse vs. reaction and breaking down the conditions where one method is preferable over the other.
Great video guys and as always great info
I had to go back to where Matt handed Tim the snagged rod so I could watch Tim fiddle with that for a solid minute. That was the highlight for me 😂
11:53 Matt’s jovial laugh
Awesome info. Random question: do you know any companies that will make discontinued baits for you? Watch this reminded me of some older baits that worked really well but we’re discontinued.
Great video, love this channel! Could you guys do a video about fishing in the rain?
I love the struggle! Makes you a better fisherman.
Good explanation why I didn't get bit yesterday, 100 miles south
You guys always give good, Logical advice. But yeah, the struggle is real! I have not gotten any cold bass.
Great content brother thank you for the info will be using these 4 techniques here in Baytown Texas its been a nasty one
Hey Tim and Matt. Great video as always. I have a question that I hope isnt dumb. I am wondering your thoughts on using a crappie rod for finesse ned fishing. I have a 7’ medium lite moderate action rod that I think might work well. I am very new to finesse fishing and would like some advice on this. Thanks guys!
this probably would have worked last sat during the wild west tourney i got slaughtered in, i am pretty sure i fished everything you can think of above the narrows and got 3 rats, either clear lake was completely shut down or i was just in the wrong spot
It surprising to see pros like you guys struggle. I kind of gave up on largemouth for now and targeting stripers on the delta. They are hitting top water like its summer.
Great information Guys 💯💯👍
I've had luck on bubble gum worm on a Shakey head🤟 And the smallest jig I can find with a zman craw👍
Great video
Hard fishing here in SC. Our lakes are at flood stage and pure red mud color. Vis is less than 6 in. Still trying though.
Thanks! Always informative regardless.
These are fine and dandy in the semi-stained water you guys are fishing but what do you use for muddy cold water? What do you use in this situation? The water temp has been fluctuating between 50 and 56 degrees and the clarity in the lakes I'm fishing is
good to show even with finesse only tactics it can still be a grind.. though you can still get a couple. all i mainly do is finesse from the banks. movement is also a key element on boat or shore.. better to try more then just one spot. im on shore and limited shoreline on super pressure clear water. it can get blown out and muddy and 20-40 mph winds sometimes... i skunk.. but i still catch. the bad thing its been packed a lot lately with a lot of bait and wait with tons of poles and groups.. so sometimes you are limited to where you can even cast and try.. which is annoying.. but ya.. at the lower here you could go at nights before covid.. .. there i would fish the full shoreline at night to the back and then back to the lot. i caught more fish like that. covering water at same time using finesse. though i have also had good days not moving from a single spot. where it was slow at first then it was good for a bit then it slowed down again. like the bait came by slowly and brought all the nicer fish along with em. i know though i should get a truck and at least a kayak to be on top of water then i might start doing better here.
Now I don’t feel so bad. Fished Clearlake yesterday and caught 2 fish, but it was a great day to be on the water.
They always use so many different colors, I try but find myself going back to green pumpkin for soft plastics and black and blue jig and trailer. The main forage in the lake I fish all the time is bluegill and alewives?
Sean 76 From my experience, throwing unique colors can pay off. They just don’t see it a lot. 🎣
@@Ryan-jx4vh I need to try it and actually stick with it
Tim and Matt- I know you guys like to fish the Shakey head on some what hard bottom but I've seen Tim fish the shakey head flipping and pitching when you guys were fishing down on Chickamunga.. Alot of the lakes up here in WA that i fish usually tend to have a pretty muddy bottom and lots of submerged vegetation can I still fish the shakey head in these conditions?
Please do an updated bank fishing video guys! That'b be sick!
Hey Tim and Matt,
This is kind of off topic from this video, but I just got done watching your high end rod buyers guide. How do you guys think the new dobyns Xtasy stacks up against the NRX in terms of sensitivity? And feedback would be great. Thanks!
Hey Tim, we know that Robo worm has a ton of great color options and other companies are jumping on that Ned rig train. What’s your thoughts on the good old fashioned Z man elastec and that it floats vs other companies and thier traditional small plastic worm?
Awesome video boys,great job 👊👊👍
its been a few days since I've caught anything here in upsate NY its been tough. What are some good rigs for a medium heavy fast action baitcaser and medium light fast action spinning?
Still haven't caught my first 2020 fish yet. Bass are finally starting to become active. Hopefully soon!!
Wind wind wind got skunked 2 times in a row redding ca pray for me lol great video guys thank you
Definitely good to see that EVERYONE struggles at least sometimes
I have been struggling since November. I live in Central Oklahoma where the weather makes drastic changes daily. High pressure all the time. Fishing from the bank on small ponds I know are loaded with heathy bass, crappie, and even a couple of beavers. Water is super clear and stays clear pretty much year round. It’s a grass pond probably no more that 10 foot at its deepest. Any suggestions? Pro tips?
I'd like to see a vid on both of your favorite rod actions for each type of lure. Length, power, action and material (glass, graphite, composite) You list brands and models on some vids but when you click the TW link, theres multiple rod actions in that model. I did a check on your favorite swimbait Loomis rod and theres 4 different powers and lengths in that rod.
Anyone else remember when the dock at 1:50 was referred to as "The Pink Boathouse"? I don't think it has been pink for a few decades and it looks like it isn't even a boathouse any more, but it will always be the Pink Boathouse to me.
Makes me feel better about fishing when they post a vid showing essentially them getting skunked!
I recently bought the aftco shadow hoodie and it's my first piece of aftco gear. Is it typical to have to step up 1 size in this brand? Fits tighter than other brands of same size. Thanks!
That cold front that came those 2 days shut those fish down for sure.
Trd crawz are my go to
Typical day on the lake. Grinding it out process is what we train for lol
nice lake
Will this work in a deep resivor lake like Carter's Lake in Georgia? It's mostly 30ft deep plus..
