People glazing topuria will sleep on how strategically sound Volk is. At 145, For every perceived disadvantage Volk had, he has used a great strategy or sheer calmness and toughness to overcome them.

Are you basing it on the technique in their game or their legacies and competition. I feel like too many people go off legacy instead of their actual technique. I feel like Ilia is both the better boxer and harder hitter. Volk has great footwork and his range understanding is great compared to most mma fighters, and maybe that's enough. But I have money on Ilia winning it.

Holy hell, people are really pushing Topuria like he's the second coming of Jones. I cannot believe how fast we went from Volk being in the GOAT contention to being the underdog in his own division against a guy who's constantly running his mouth without any legitimate wins to back it up? Was beating Emmett and Mitchell really all it took to elevate him to a status where people think he will eat Volk like he's a washed up has been? So disrespectful... Yes, Volk has had a bad KO against Makachev and yes, he opened up about some mental struggles, but that does absolutely not take away what he has done in his own division. It doesn’t diminish a single thing Volk has achieved…and I’m happy for Ilia not having to live down all that scrap he talked! Hoping to see ilia get booked against Yair very soon. I know some featherweights threw their names out immediately (I’m looking at you Ortega!!) but I believe Yair deserves first dibs vs Ilia. Emmett already lost to him and Calvin is injured I believe. Zombie retired and Volk don’t need an immediate rematch. Yair will be the best contender.
Ilia’s planted left foot might be a key here as he’s never fought a guy with the freakish length of volk. Ilia loves to play on the edge of boxing range but he’s going to have to get risky or get an early take down to use it as a threat to close distance. If volk is sharp he may just catch him on the way in with something big. Otherwise I struggle to see where volk wins. Ilia is a better boxer and better on the feet. But he’s also going to be more risky and we’ve seen that cost ilia. Volk is such a smooth operator he is 100% the one go make him pay in those moments. Someone is winning off a flash knock down TKO my head says ilia but volk still has very real scenarios he can win

I love Ilia but I think Volk’s jab and leg kicks are going to give him serious problems. Ilia is basically just pure boxing. Even Bryce Mitchell was able to land some damage to Ilia’s legs, and Ilia tends to overcommit with his overhand right or right cross without setting it up. Volk can hammer away at Ilia from range and pretty easily cut angles on Ilia and counter when Ilia overcommits to a single line of attack. Other than that, we haven’t seen Ilia deal with someone who has world class footwork. Ilia is a great swarmed but isn’t good at closing guys off with the footwork and the cage, whereas Volk has the best defensive and offensive footwork in featherweight history.

Ilia fought on short notice for the Zalal fight and it was his 1st fight in the UFC, it makes more sense that he would gas then.
In the Emmett fight, he was constantly in the pocket throwing for 5 rounds and didn't look the least bit tired in round 5.

A lot of people are talking about how Volk is old/just got knocked out. However, not enough people are talking about how absolutely amazing Ilia is. I would bet on him to beat Volk even if Volk hadn’t fought Islam. (I’m a Volk fan and want him to win, but Ilia is just too good).

I feel like Volk is the better fighter overall, but he’s got so much going against him right now…
1. He’s 35. In championship fights from Welterweight and below, 35+ year olds are something like 2-31.
2. Huge age gap. Ilia’s 8 years younger. The bigger the gap, the more favorable for the younger fighter.
3. Volk’s last fight ended in a KO. Fighters after getting KOd usually suffer a bit in terms of confidence and durability going forward.
Again, I wouldn’t be surprised if Volk wins, but he’s got everything working against him.

It was 4 months ago, not less than 3 months ago...Those are some form fitting pants you got there..Form fitters..There is a huge difference in the level of competition these two guys have faced in their respective careers..And Topuria has been caught by head kicks, knees, nice shots, like all fighters..Topuria is a good boxer, he'll catch alot of guys, don't think he'll catch Volk though..Topuria is weak off his back, I think Volk will take him down early and often, feed him elbows and ground and pound..And that is how I see this fight ending, ground and pound TKO...
Actually liked Topuria prior to the build up of this fight, but his lack of respect towards Volk has just put me right off. I don't mind a confident fighter, but Volk deserves respect. Ilia is capable in all aspects, as is Volk. Should be a good fight, but I'm rooting for the champ, as always, Alexander Volkanovski.
I wouldn't say Topuria is "levels above" Volk, but I do think he can match his level. Which isn't necessarily devestating to Volk. The fact that Topuria is only 27 is the real problem. And not just for Volk, but the entire division going forward.

I was a big Topuria fan. But hearing him say things like "I wont defend the belt" because he doesn't want to fight guys like Max and Yair have made me sour on him. He's talking like someone who's fought everyone in the division after only beating 2 guys in the top 10.
If he does beat Volk they'd probably run it back immediately given Volk's run at 145.
I hope he declines that too and they strip him for refusing to fight.
Feel like this is a bit of a lose/lose situation for Volk. If he wins, it was against a "journeyman" and he should have won anyways. If he gets caught and loses (which can happen but will probably only happen by a flush KO or sth crazy) he risks his FW GOAT status and there will be a narartive of him coming back too soon after the Islam KO and so on. Feel like there will be many controversies after this one..
Saying that all of Volkanovski‘s opponents would just throw one or two punches, and not long combinations is ridiculous. Max Holloway is a volume fighter. That is what he has known for. He doesn’t just throw a 1 2
The only level above Volk is GOAT status. Even if Ilia wins, he's no GOAT (I think he does win). And I don't think the Zalal fight can be counted for his cardio, it was his UFC debut and his most recent fight was 5 rounds where he didn't look even a little tired the entire time.
No one is levels above Volk. I’m not a huge Volk fan, but he’s levels above EVERY fighter in the 145 pound division until Topuria proves me wrong, it’s still Volk
Idk how people can say Ilia has superior _anything_ except maybe boxing. And sure, that could do it but why is everyone talking like it's a foregone conclusion? Also Ilia's style seems quite vulnerable to feints, leg kicks and head kicks (although that's less of a concern for the taller fighter). I'd go as far as to say if Volk is patient with his leg kicks and setting up with feints (which he isn't always) Ilia will have no answers.
