"It's mostly about hot gluing objects to clothing." Lol so true, and I'm a huge steampunk. Steampunk is silly, and that's precisely why it's so much fun. Ben's outfit is going to be awesome.
I like the intros the annotations and everything else's glad it's just back to,Ben and Alison now. The episodes with extra members were just clunky and not as personal. Good work guys!
Ben, you missed the opportunity to build a John Logie Baird style mechanical TV. That would have been much more true to the eara and actually quite educational.
Ben has always done cheesy intros to his builds, without them it wouldn't be so entertaining :D I remember the breaking in to make an atari portable "comic" he did way back
The shipping is ridiculous, I find the actual prices fairly competitive but the lack of USPS First Class keeps me from ordering from them. Paying $13 shipping for $6.25 of ICs is ridiculous. Another place was the same price for the parts but $3.22 shipping. Guess which one I picked? I want to support Ben and his show, but the shipping is keeping me from ordering from element14
Found this project awesome!, I'd suggest the folowing modifications though: 1.-BALANCING After asembling the rotating parts, the rotor needs to be balanced, It is fairly easy (hold it with two needles and check on multiple angles and remove material as needed). Doing so will reduce the friction and shaking notably. 2.- Reduce the radius of the brushes: Since the rotor is fixed on 2 ends, why not use one for the motor and other for the brushes... or even beter : use 3 pieces of hollow tube (+ isolation on the big screw )and put the brushes in the rotor instead (a hole in the big screw for the cables) 3.- the LED assembly should be orthogonal , and not radial to the Rotating axis, like Ben himself said, to reduce air resistance.
Was nice to see a reference to WoodGears. I hope one of these days we may even see a collaboration between Matthew and Ben! Woodworking meets Mechanical Engineering!
If it is not to late, I'd like to recommend changing the opto-tab to an opto-hole. You really don't want a small tab like exposed and spinning around at 600rpm.
They actually proofed the concept of this when they had mechanical televisions for sale way back when in what I can only imagine was the "steam punk" era
Whoa! Are those RCA Video Disc's mounted on your wall? I had one of those as a kid (I used to watch Logan's Run all the time on it). That theme song is forever stuck in my head.
Yeah uh... the premise of steam punk was once functional accesorisation. Then it got popular. The fact that you're putting functionality into your stuff makes it more authentic, Ben.
you should use 2 brushless motors for this thing. one for spinning the pcbs and the other one could be used as a generator to power your boards. this way u could put the microcontroller on the spinning part as well and use a motor on eather side without additional bearings. in my experience brushes always are a pain in the ....
Wouldn't it be better to run the power from a battery inside the drum and wirelessly send the video data? That would eliminate the Interference caused by brushes. Looking forward to the next episode.
neat idea Ben, I wonder what alternatives there are to the opto interrupter for this kind of project. I had a similar idea for something I could strap to a bike wheel and considered using two accelerometers and some fancy physics equations.
It's always good to make steampunk stuff that do something... I got an Iphone adapter combined it with a reproduction candlestick telephone and turned it into a functional Steampunk walking cane/ Mobile phone. XD
How's the video from your computer captured, Ben? Because the framerate is really low... Could you make it higher? It would look better and it would make it easier to understand what you're doing on the screen (how the cursor is moving, etc.)
why dint you just put everything on the spinning part? I realize that inertia and balance come into play, but seams like a small caveat opposed to brush issues and data noise caused by brushes....guess I will see next week.
"Wah he made fun of a thing that I like!" Really? I have never seen a steampunk cosplay that wasn't "Let's put gears just everywhere. Look, my goggles are made of gears. Gears gears gears. . ." Get over it. Steampunk looks cool, sometimes, but most of the time it's hot-glued gears on a top hat and some vaguely 1800s attire that is rarely actually Victorian. Ben Heck makes things work. He uses gears and electronics to make unique and interesting things. Get off your gear-covered high horse and either get out or shut up.
hey ben ! I have a building request / mod for the iphone. or realy any kind of mp3. do you think you can make a connector that connects into an iphone headphone jack and outputs a usb signal so i can connect my corsair vengence 2000 to it ? (wireless by usb) thanks :D
how to piss off an entire fandom, "It's mostly about hot glueing objects to clothing" .... lol but t is true go to etsy or ebay and anything labeled steampunk is just that
Is there any body else out there like Ben Heck that does custom hacks and mods for a living I tried to email Ben about a project but I never got a answer back and I am having a hard time trying to find any body that does the kind of things Ben is doing. Any body???????????
"It's mostly about hot glue-ing objects to clothing" ? Seriously ? Out of all the material out there about the entire subculture that is steampunk, *this* is what you brewed it down to ? Word of advice: Read a bit more into something before you make such ridiculous blanket statements in the future.
lets put it this way. if youre angry over a freaking diy project made probably as a filler episode you have a problem. its not about steampunk "culture" he would hot clue something to your face if he was allowed... hell maybe even mine. stop getting so worked up over a person who basically summed up amateur cosplay in the first minute.
Hey... you know when you put on your non-authentic period costume and your top hat with gears glued onto it? Well, when you do that, you look *_fucking ridiculous_*.
"It's mostly about hot gluing objects to clothing."

I'm glad these videos are still available. I love me some Ben Heck
The concept sounds similar, though not identical, to the mechanical TVs from the 20s. I love it.

Is it just me or is Element14 one of the most expensive places to buy from online or retail?

Jarrod Roberson
The fact they push commercials into the show doesn't help. 4 this time...

Super cool. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Was nice to see a reference to WoodGears. I hope one of these days we may even see a collaboration between Matthew and Ben! Woodworking meets Mechanical Engineering!
THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!
I was wondering if anyone else would catch that! hahah
If it is not to late, I'd like to recommend changing the opto-tab to an opto-hole. You really don't want a small tab like exposed and spinning around at 600rpm.
I totally agree. That would definitely be how I would try to set it up.
0:58 I see what you did there! I see it sir! How very dude of you!
Cant wait to see the next episode
they are amazing actors
5:38, most impressive cow lick I've ever seen..
Yeah uh... the premise of steam punk was once functional accesorisation. Then it got popular.
The fact that you're putting functionality into your stuff makes it more authentic, Ben.
Best Ben heck episode ever!!!!!!!
This system was used horizontally, in the Vectron flying toy. It could display text and links and all sorts of things.
you should use 2 brushless motors for this thing. one for spinning the pcbs and the other one could be used as a generator to power your boards. this way u could put the microcontroller on the spinning part as well and use a motor on eather side without additional bearings. in my experience brushes always are a pain in the ....
Does anybody else love this guy?
Wouldn't it be better to run the power from a battery inside the drum and wirelessly send the video data? That would eliminate the Interference caused by brushes. Looking forward to the next episode.
Wireless + Motor(interference) == No joy.
Yeah,....forgot about the motor.
I love how the disclaimer at the end is not legally binding, as it says in the following section, while it's at the end. It means nothing
0:57 Nice product placement, Ben! Isn't e14 sponsoring enough?
Oh, so _that's_ how those fancy alarm clocks work. I always wondered.
I have an inkling that the motor won't be fast enough to get the desired effect.
neat idea Ben, I wonder what alternatives there are to the opto interrupter for this kind of project. I had a similar idea for something I could strap to a bike wheel and considered using two accelerometers and some fancy physics equations.
Welcome to the Ben Heck show, where we need a minute long skit to justify making anything
steam punk is just people hot gluing stuff on to clothes.
lol i was looking for the second part till i realize that this was uploaded today
It's always good to make steampunk stuff that do something... I got an Iphone adapter combined it with a reproduction candlestick telephone and turned it into a functional Steampunk walking cane/ Mobile phone. XD
You remind of Datak Taar from tv show Defiance...
How's the video from your computer captured, Ben? Because the framerate is really low... Could you make it higher? It would look better and it would make it easier to understand what you're doing on the screen (how the cursor is moving, etc.)
I would put all in the spinning part. Maybe would only send 5V and GND by brushes!
I'm failing to see how LEDs are steampunk... Sir, please prove me wrong! :)
Next time I order, I hope I don't get hit by a box.
Under 301
Cool
Dear Ben: can you make a tutorial on how to make a portable gamecube? That would help a lot.
Thank You,
Clay
why dint you just put everything on the spinning part? I realize that inertia and balance come into play, but seams like a small caveat opposed to brush issues and data noise caused by brushes....guess I will see next week.
Steampunk LEDs. Let's unplug the glue gun and get to work, this is starting to make sense.
wheres part 2?
You make a fine Iron Abraham.
Was that a big lebowski reference?
I saw your steam! :3
I'm getting insane of the same backgrund music playing all the time
WHAT THE HELL ?! MORE THEN ONE EPISODE !? Why Ben... why!!
THERE ARE 64 LIGHTS! I almost missed that reference. Age of the geek, baby.
Like and/or comment if you get either or both of the T.V. references!
Which 3D Printer be good to get?
100 Hz is just right, you can say that for circular movement.
I want one.
Genius
Mattias Wandel!
i probably would have gone the baird televisor route with this one.
it would have been alot easier to build.
i always thought that steampunk was a music genre, i thought so wrong
"Wah he made fun of a thing that I like!" Really? I have never seen a steampunk cosplay that wasn't "Let's put gears just everywhere. Look, my goggles are made of gears. Gears gears gears. . ." No.
Crowforge
YES
I think the word he is looking for is cinema-scope.
hey ben ! I have a building request / mod for the iphone. or realy any kind of mp3.
do you think you can make a connector that connects into an iphone headphone jack and outputs a usb signal so i can connect my corsair vengence 2000 to it ? (wireless by usb)

i live in oregon so it proably will be that quick XD oh and a 2 shorter nubs will give you a better frame accuracy
Working product?
There are FIVE lights!
Edit: or four.. whatever :P
Pls Ben Pls!!!!!!Make your own Steambox!!!!!!!!!!!Pls
you got the same HP printer as me
There are 64 lights!!!
how to piss off an entire fandom, "It's mostly about hot glueing objects to clothing" .... lol but t is true go to etsy or ebay and anything labeled steampunk is just that
I hate steam punk projects that serve no purpose. I'm glad he shares my sentiments.
how make oclus rift
"Bens"? HOW DARE THEE!
Why don't you turn a steambox into a laptop
Slip rings..
Dat acting
Lol You haven't even watched it yet :P
His ignorance about Steampunk is infuriating.
watching ben heck makes me feel stupid.... :(
The announcers vocal fry makes me cringe so hard. I hope he doesn't do VO for a living.
Is there any body else out there like Ben Heck that does custom hacks and mods for a living I tried to email Ben about a project but I never got a answer back and I am having a hard time trying to find any body that does the kind of things Ben is doing. Any body???????????

"It was just a joke." is not a fucking excuse.
lets put it this way. if youre angry over a freaking diy project made probably as a filler episode you have a problem. its not about steampunk "culture" he would hot clue something to your face if he was allowed... hell maybe even mine. stop getting so worked up over a person who basically summed up amateur cosplay in the first minute.

Steam punk is for man children and social rejects who think the 5 hairs on their upper lip form a stache.
You seem to be mad. As a butt doctor, my proffesional verdict is, that you are butthurt and have a slight case of buttfrustrated.
Weak TNG reference, but I forgive you...
Please no more acting.
69
Led and ic based "Steampunk"!? booooooo!
Fifth
ben is not the best actor, as seen...
stupid intro :D
I saw your steam! :3
