Racist fans: Doing racist things
Media pundits: "Outrageous!"
Football authorities: Issue a statement, fronted by a retired star player
Actual outcome for vulnerable players and moral, civic fans: nothing
Six months later: rinse and repeat
When I worked at CONCACAF (2001-2003), literally every 4-6 months a fax from FIFA would come through condemning racism, and offering a statement from a retired star player discussing an initiative that was being planned...the response to hate and racism in football has been fearful, tepid, and keeps vulnerable people in harms way as hate and racism remain comfortable and present in the game.
The only thing that will change this is exclusion and fines. When you are placed outside the football community due to your actions, and when it costs you more than you make to recover, the behaviour will change.
The only reason this hasn't been implemented is that enough people, enough places, who get to decide either are indifferent to the issue or are hatefully racist themselves.
football is a tribal sport in the sense that fans tend to exclusively and unconditionally support specific teams (tribes) over others. Many people only follow football to fulfill that primitive desire of seeing their tribe defeat or even humiliate other tribes in what resembles a field of battle. This sense of hatred for the other is a major economic driver for many sports, which is why I think the concerned authorities are reluctant to severely police racial abuse, since racism is also unexplained hatred you have for others over a trivial difference that has no impact on your life.
Agree, they need to treat this the same as they did when hooliganism was at its worst, ban the teams from competitions, closed doors games, etc.
@@jftt42 The trivial difference that has no impact on their life:
Filthy cities, rampant crime, cultural and ethnic erasion, political persecution
Lazio as usual, this has always been the problem with Moussolini's club. I wonder what's going through his grandsons mind considering that he's playing for Lazio as well.
Mussolini's club Is actually Roma lol, Lazio was created way before, they Just happened to have the most vocal far right group of supporters

@@bzilla1090 Situational irony
I firmly believe that players who get targeted by racist abuse should be allowed to flip the middle finger towards the racists. If any of the fans feel offended, maybe they should put some effort into getting rid of the racists, and until they do they deserve the finger.
It is a pity for a team that was wonderful in the past having stars like : Nesta, Stam, Veron, Almyeda, Salas, C. Lopez and Crespo.. I used to love this team, but after all these frequent racist abuses, I am feeling really disappointed and think that this is disgusting.
You know so little about the relationship between fascism and Lazio 😂 Check where Mussolini’s great-grandson is playing
@@jasiahllyod-issac8144 I know man. Di Canio signs and punishments.. Not a honorable story out of the pitch, but I was talking about the sportive side.
The oh so sad reality is that it's being 'addressed' so therefore they believe they're doing something about it.🤦♂️
What a surprise.
I'm so happy Lazio lost this match. That was great.
lazio…what a surprise 🤣
Exactly, it's a well known fact that Lazio supporters are mostly nostalgic of Mussolini and nostalgic of Italian racial segregation and Italian racial laws.
@@brianlawson4368 To be honest not only Lazio but most Italian football fans are nostalgic of Mussolini and nostalgic of the Italian racial segregation and the Italian racial laws and also a huge part of the Italian society is nostalgic about that.
@@marceltresvant8581 That's true, although Lazio fans are historically the most anti-blacks among the Italian fans.
@@brianlawson4368 Napoli fans racially abused Lukaku yesterday.
@@marceltresvant8581 Well, let's say that Italians historically never liked black people that much.
In America, those individuals would be banned for life from the stadium.
No they wouldn't.
@@signoresantinoburnett1169 Yes, they would be banned, absolutely, in England and in France too.
@@brianlawson4368 absolutely they would
@@kisscrank Exactly.
@@brianlawson4368 Nope. Not in France.
Lecce fans were screaming “Umtiti” so he wouldn’t hear the racist chant
I lived in Italy for a period of time in the past, in Italy there was for many years the fascist regime of Mussolini who made racist laws that discriminated black people. Many Italians still have that kind of racist and segregationist mentality against black people.
Good
Ban the spectators or ban team or deduct 100 points 💯 of the team
That only goes so far then you start getting blackmailed by your ultras. It happened at Juventus. Some organized ultras were threatening the president that they would sing or make racist chants unless they got free tickets. If the club didn't give them free tickets then they would start chanting racist songs and the club would get massive fines.
Anyone else surprised?
(The correct answer is no)
There's a reason they're called SS Lazio
The complete name is SS KKK Lazio.
Yup!
Good
Lecce fans were chanting his name and they were much louder than the lazio Fans... you could have added this to be fair. Umtiti was the best player on the pitch by far.
Lecce loves Umiti :D and are by far one of the most mellow fans next to Juve and Torino. In this past few years.
Sounds like you're trying to make excuses for your racist country
@@antboa I'm not that kind of nationalist you often meet in England. I'm not making any excuse I was there and when 30 thousand People started to chant his name UMTITI it was really something. Umtiti is loving the city and his people. Is it too bad ?
@@antboa no only a few clubs ever have problems with their fans being racist, and in the south it's more uncommon except for cagliari. Yes it's bad but dont group a team who've never done any racial remarks to a team known for it
Forza Lecce e forza umtiti
How you cover this important topic with 2 mins..ESPN 😂🤡
Black players should just stop signing for teams in Italy. Italy seems like the worst in Europe. Players should try their best to not go there.
Money talks, and I suppose all the African refugees coming to Italy should be aware of the racism as well.
@@rdede700 I'd be aware enough not to go.
**NEWSFLASH** - There's racism OUTSIDE of Italy, as well!

It’s the same in EPL La Liga etc
Love all people
The world is a bad place
You're a bad race
Italians
Not all Italians are like this
Yes I know, we Italians have the reputation of being hardcore anti-blacks. As an Italian I have to say that sadly we deserve that reputation, it's true that many of us are hardcore anti-blacks racists.
The same people condemning this turn a blind eye or make excuses for African violence in European countries.
Lazio. Shocker /s
In Italy there is not the political will to fight the racism, because first should be eliminated the racism of North ( powerful, wealthy and egoistic) against South.Get informations!
Southern Italians can be very racist, more than Northern Italians, I say that as a black man who was born and bred in Italy (now I don't live in Italy anymore).
Umtiti
“Serie A racism condemned”. This happens everywhere. Did you not see what happened with Vinicius? The world is a bad place. This isn’t a Serie A problem.
Yes for sure but it happens way more often in the serie A every year so they’re almost the poster boys for racism at this point.
Self report
"This happens everywhere"? What do you mean by "everywhere"? Do you mean all throughout Europe? If so, maybe you're right... but if you mean "all throughout the world," then you're very wrong...
For starters, here in the U.S., we treat any athlete, regardless of his/her skin color, with dignity and respect... It doesn't matter if we are talking about the NBA, MLS, NFL, MLB, etc... you just don't see Americans racially abusing athletes. It surprises me that these things occur in Europe..
Next, I have a hard time picturing Canadian fans racially abusing black athletes, and I also refuse to believe that people from South America or Asia would do something like that.
@@Dah42 Yeah they do, man. Here in SA we do it fairly regularly and Asia? for real? China alone is one of the most racist countries ever, specially against blacks. Not all countries are as traumatized with race relations as America is. Yeah it's a bad thing and it's progressively dying.
It's more common in Italy because of the history of racial laws and racial segregation against black people during Mussolini's fascist regime. Having lived in Italy for a period I can say that many Italians still have that kind of racist segregation mindset towards black people.
It's "interesting" how the whole world feels the need to lecture the U.S. on racism whenever U.S. police officers are "mean" to black criminals, yet the whole world is silent whenever Spanish or Italian fans racially abuse their black players... How disgusting! I feel so sorry for those black football players who compete in Europe. It's not fair the way they are treated... And to be fair, this not only occurs in Spain or Italy but also in England and France... Whenever England or France's national teams are eliminated from a tournament, the ones who are blamed for the defeats are always the black players.
But yeah, "Europeans are good and sweet," whereas "Americans are evil and racist." Yeah, right.
At least no one get shot in Italy for being black
@@alessandropinto_xsan There have been a lot of black people attacked and even killed in Italy in recent years, just look at the English Wikipedia page of racism in Italy for a list of the racial aggression to black people in recent years. Just some months ago a black man was strangled in daylight in a crowded street in Italy by a racist Italian man with people just standing there and watching without doing anything.
@@brianlawson4368 not by the police. Rarely anyone get killed by the police.. the law doesn't allow them to do much anyway that is a fact. Even if someone break in your house and you kill Him trying to protect your family you probably end up in jail. Not that I'm happy about this. Then apart from this man strangled... How many more cases can you count? You hear stories like this in the USA every week... Come on you can't argue about this at all if you have a bit of common sense. Racism is as bad in Italy as in the rest if the world. The difference in some countries the law works better to punish those who commit crimes. In Italy we are still behind... I've lived in England 20 years and I know very well how things work. I've seen it especially at work. People is as ignorant and bad as in italy.vthe difference they will do things on your back.
@@alessandropinto_xsan When it's normal people who do this it's even worse.
@@brianlawson4368 yes but in USA happens very often that normal people do this. You can't condemn a country just because a psychopath strangled an African man. Please tell me how many cases like this you heard last year in Italy? Then I agree with the guy about the fact that everyone want to lecture American people about racism. But I'm upset because everyone in Europe want to lecture Italians when they are as bad as us.
Champions of Europe we know what we are ...England lol
Get over it.
They're Mancs, typical Manc 😂
Lazio fans .....big surprise. But hey pile on to the issue you reported on la Liga. EPL is also loaded with racist fans. Never a mention.
Racism will always happen, it won't be stopped. The best way is to find how to deal with it when it happens.
All the best to umtiti
That kind of mentality is what keeps racism going
These things are happening inside the stadium it most definitely can be stopped. if the mickey mouse president gets aggressive with those clowns once and for all, no one will just “deal with it” thats not a option

What makes some Europeans behave like this?
Here in the U.S. you don't see fans racially abusing black players... It doesn't matter if we are talking about NBA, MLS, NFL, etc. you just don't see Americans disrespecting our black athletes.
