Perfume is a lot like music in that way. You fall in love with it, you want to experience it every day, and then inexplicably you get sick of it. Either it becomes overplayed, too common, too associated with one time in your life, or you simply grow out of it.
@@JohmathanBSwift She graduated from RUclips lol Idk what she does exactly, but it’s something much bigger and better to her. If you Google her, you might be able to find something. She has made a name for herself over the past decade
Glad it cracked you up. Shalimar's an emphatic oriental, which isn't everyone's cup of tea. For a much paler, lower key version of Shalimar, I'd suggest the new Prada L'eau Ambrée.
I love both of those perfumes. I mention Josef Statkus in "Katie's Perfume Collection: Part 1" video (my original perfume collection vids, not the current update ones), and mention both the JS and Bois d'Armenie in different posts on my blog.
true star gold does smell good... but.. I think the best fume of all time... idk... BVLGARI make GENIUS scents as does Dolce... lol... very funny Katie!
Emeraude is another old school classic - it actually predated Shalimar by 4 years. Unfortunately, they say the original formula's been messed about. Some the older perfumes' ingredients get cheapened down through the years by cynical manufacturers. I would love to smell the original Emeraude!
@jauniusm Shalimar starts fresh and citrussy, but the drydown is warm, spicy and creamy, which makes it heavy for hot days. But you could get away with on cooler spring/summer nights. And the edt concentration is a sheer option for summer.
@KatiePuckrikSmells Thank you for your answer. What would you reccomend, for spring/early summer, for my wife this season (she likes flowery scents, for those seasons)? Something to impress her, and say wow.. ? :)
Hi Ellen - Although I applaud your adventuresome-ness in wanting to try new things, I can already tell you that Shalimar may not be for you. It's got a thick, smoky quality to its vanilla, and couldn't be further from fruity. But keep Shalimar in mind, and revisit it from time to time over the years to see how you feel about it.
@BondGirl29 Shalimar does have a smoky/powdery quality that reminds some of baby powder. It's not your chemistry getting in the way, it's just the associations you have with the smell. There are so many things that determine whether a smell clicks for us or not. Hence the thrill of the perfume chase!
@MikeNY911 You're right - L'Heure Bleue & Mitzy are due a look and a sniff. Those are "advanced placement classics" that I've not felt clever enough to tackle. But I may anyway...
@BirdsMom2009 I have, but I can never remember what it smells like, because I always think, "Oh, I don't like that one," and then I put it down and forget about it. But I did see a shopper going koo-koo for it at the Creed counter at Neiman Marcus the other day....
@xandria20 I've been reading all your comments, and you're cracking me up, too! I know just what you mean about admiring a perfume, appreciating why it's a classic, but not having that visceral connection to it.
@KatiePuckrikSmells I Bal de Versailles also, to replace L'heure Bleu. I connected it with a Cashmere sweater of black and tan horizontal stripes, short sleeves, that I wore with a Black scarf. So I could never wear it except with wool. Consequently I have perfume and an eau de toilette that are over 30 years old. Shalimar I accidentally swallowed and had my stomach pumped in Charleston, SC. Bad memories. I just keep my mouth shut whenever I am around it and excuse myself. Is this PTSD?
@50Violetta I wear Bal à Versailles. It would be an interesting phenomenon if it was being sought out because MJ loved it, since BaV is the kind of classic 1960s vintage perfume that younger sniffers aren't usually comfortable wearing. It smells like you're standing in a barn with the doors open to the fields of flowers right outside: floral with definite undercurrent of leather/hay/sweaty animal smells. It's deep and sophisticated. Go Michael!
Katie, Shalimar used to be my signature scent, but I wanted a change and was steered toward For Her by Narciso Rodriguez which I absolutely LOVE. What are your thoughts on For Her???
They "improve" formulations for modern tastes, or they cheapen formulations for the bottom line. Or they remove key ingredients to fit with arbitrary health regulations. All bogus reasons, right?
@KatiePuckrikSmells please please do the vetiver ,and the mouchoir de monsieur...your gorgeous sense of wonder nourishes the interest and i'm so curious to hear what you'd say......yes i love the guerlains. i sprayed some mouchoir in the fold of my elbow about two hours ago and i'm sniffing away at it,before it disappears...it does fade very fast.i love the girl at the guerlain counter in bloomingdales..she gives you a little saucer of coffee beans to smell between smelling......screeeeeeam.
you would like flowerbomb by viktor and rolf...i think i spelled that right? its the perfect mix of sofistication and floraly fruit without being overpowering! at least i love it!
KB, glad I tickle your pickle! I've got some more appearances on E!'s "That Morning Show" coming up, as it happens. (I'll post them on my channel after they're broadcast.) And I've hosted a bunch of TV shows in the UK.
Cool about your grandma loving Shalimar. And I'm with you on the bossyboots sales assistant - back off, lady! A few years back, Guerlain brought out a sheer version of Shalimar called Shalimar Light. It bumps up the citrus and phases out the thick smokiness. It reminds me a bit of Sugar by Fresh. It might be a way to "ease into" Shalimar.
Hey Katie, I was looking at a bottle of Roxy Love perfume online and it described the smell as "a blend of: citrus, florals, musky woods, and green tea" what would this smell like? I'm not sure what green tea in a fragrance smells like, do you?

@zaulaa I'm guessing there have been changes along the way, just because it seems everything's been reformulated (either because of ingredient restrictions or to appeal to contemporary fumies) -- but I've never smelled an older Shalimar to compare.
but the original shalimar they sell now is not exactly like the old shalimar in the old bottle, i do think it smells different.,just like chanel no.5 it doesn't smell as it was...too bad !!
@existencevs Gloria-lovers out there say that Jessica Simpson Fancy and Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille both supply a little of Gloria's vanilla amaretto.
@Danu6403 Ha-ha, "Shalimar Barbie". It's funny, though, "plastic doll head" is a common note that people pick up on in perfume. Don't know exactly what that is, other than a bit of vanilla. And plastic, I guess!
@valine0 The newer Eau Premiere version of No. 5 is sheerer and lighter than the original No. 5 formulation. If your mom doesn't like strong smells, she'd be happier with Eau Premiere.
......I am desperate, could you please tell me what were the ingredients in this perfume, that I can ask or look for the same ingredients. I want to have a perfume, I deserve one ;0((((
Could you suggest some more classic perfumes that have been around for awhile? I like the idea of wearing something with a bit of history. Our pals Turin and Sanchez suggested that a lot of perfumes from back in the day got reformulated, thus becoming mockeries of their former glories.
@babydollface18 I think I must break all the "rules" when it comes to the kinds of perfumes I enjoy wearing - I'm short, boiled potato pasty and the very opposite of exotic, and yet my favorite scents are all heavy, rich, intense orientals.
@realfam1969 Isn't that funny how people try to recreate long-lost loves with their perfume? Or disturbing...one or the other. It took me a while to come around to Shalimar. Sometimes it takes years for my nose to really "get" a perfume. It has to do with changing tastes and experiences.

Shalimar is very thick & creamy - it can take some adjusting if you're used to the current style of very sweet, more transparent perfumes.
This is an Excellent piece of video Kati! Always the Best to You & Yours!
