I played a lot of Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, and Donkey Kong 64 when I was a kid. Even if triple A studios aren't really making as many games in the genre these days, I'm happy to see so many indie games I can add to my backlog of 3D platformers I have to play (one day I shall play all the cool ones) :3
Collect-a-thon were needed back then due to hardware limitations. Once open world games become a tread, Collect-a-thons were seen as redundant. Such as Sucker Punch abandoning Sly Cooper in favor of Ghost of Tsushima, or Rare working on Everwild despite fans wanting Banjo. The good news is that collect-a-thons are still a thing indie games, because small companies don't have the resources to make an open world game. For example Hat in Time was originally an action game, but Jonas Kaerlev felt that the action was underwhelming compared to the jumping, thats why it became a platformer.
If you haven't already, I'd also recommend looking into rom-hacks of N64 games, especially Banjo-Kazooie, Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time. Some of these hacks are on par with their original games, and I feel like you'd have a lot of fun with those!
Awesome video. I'd love to try all of those games and hopefully I will at some point. In particular, pseudoregalia looks reeeally cool. Among all of the cool old games you mentioned, let me shout out chameleon twist, a really cool n64 game, and castlevania 64.

Spark the Electric Jester 3 is the best 3D sonic game. Everyone who liked the Sonic Adventure games should try it. But if you want something completely different, Lorn's Lure is a unique and innovative platformer. It's in the first person perspective, with a very good atmosphere and interesting setting.
Man 3d platformers. These games are ones I normallt flock to. My personal favorite by far has to be the psychonauts series. A 3d platformer collectathon about a boy who is psychic and has to use his powers to save the world. (There was also a vr game but i haven’t played that.) The first game and its sequel have a great world and characters. I love it.
I think we’re seeing a revitalisation of 3D platformers because the people who grew up on those games are now able to find so many resources to make the games they loved

Exactly! A lot of these video essays out there can be damaging because they can be taken as truth. Even in my own content, I'd want people to do their own research instead of taking my word for it. I've even seen this trend on the next video game crash incoming. 2024 has been one of the years in gaming for me. I just don't see it.
I don't think 3D platforming games lost it's touch yet. We got games like Kirby & The Forgotten Land and Astro Bot that came out not long ago. They provide alot of touch & soul and for just how fun they really are.
This video hits home with me. I really like some good mobile ports of platformers. You can play a lot of em with controller hooked up via Bluetooth or just by mobile controls
They're still up and running. But good luck expecting one from a big company, especially on a consistent basis like Nintendo who releases every one or two years. To me, it's clear that there's more work needed to make a platformer than it is to make an FPS or an action game.
In what sense do you mean action games, if i may ask? For fans of games like Darksiders, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, known as Character Action games (or whatever the name is at the moment) the genre is quite dry too these years. They're surprisingly difficult to make because of the way everything the player can do should ideally work well with everything an enemy can do. The player has offensive, defensive and evasive/movement options, and so need the enemies. Plus programming that makes them use those options competently. In recent years there have been Bayonetta 3 and GOW: Ragnarök, but story-wise Bayonetta 3 has a LOT of detractors and people are split on the actual gameplay. GOW by this point is a very different beast from how it started out, to the point there's a large amount of people that don't consider it Character Action. Even still, a lot of effort has to go into considering enemy teamups and setups and taking into account how a player's arsenal grows. There has been Soulstice in 2022 at least, and for upcoming character action games specifically, there's the likes of Genokids, Magenta Horizon, Jamphibian, Mightreya and Enenra: Daemon Core. With Gori: Cuddly Carnage, Immortal and the Death that Follows, and Cookie Cutter having a place somewhere, but another problem there is to get word of such games out there. To make 'em profitable and help out devs so that they can hopefully give more like it.
You mentioned 3D Sonic games. There are recent games paying homage to the Sonic Adventure games. Spark The Electric Jester 2 and Spark The Electric Jester 3. You might enjoy them, as they seem to be more refined than the Sonic Adventure games, especially Spark 3. Also Spark The Electric Jester 1 is a 2D game that is like a mix of Sonic & Kirby, if you'd want to check that out as well.
I really wish Rocket: Robot on Wheels would be made available again. It's probably the only classic 3D platformer that I never played (well, only briefly at a friend's house). Even when it was fairly new, I could never find it at stores, and it hasn't been officially re-released in any shape or form since.
Problem is, Sony owns that game as the developer of that game, Sucker Punch, is under their umbrella. Sony in general refuses to acknowledge any game released outside Playstation, such as Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Destruction Derby 64, WipEout 64 and Skyblazer.
I wish I could say the same for on-rail shooters. The genre barely survived when in favor of fps shooters. The death of light gun motion controllers are ditched in favor of VR. VR doesnt feel right for me.
Yeah, light gunners probably have it worse than stealth and 3d plats combined. I haven't personally played one since dead space extraction on the wii if you consider that one.
@@Tenacityfromtheglass ahh Wii, that console is a light gun machine. It turned Resident Evil 4 into a light gun 3rd person survival game, it made Trauma Center move to console and made a sequel to Sin & Punishment(a series that I consider one of the best on-rail light gun games). I had my hope for Gal Gun series but it all went down the drain when I discover Inti Creates would do more Gal Guardians. They are not a bad spin-off but I will miss my arcade-ish on rail games. Ohh on the bright side, I saw around 4-6 on-rail indie games this NextFest. Candy Rangers is such a banger demo. Can't wait for full release. We also got a Star Fox/Afterburner style on-rail shooters like Mirage Feathers, Rainbow Cotton remake and Missile Dancer. Maybe its absolutely dead genre for AAA... ahh, who needs AAA when you can get 3 brand new indies with your $50 cash!!!!
Yeah, the Wii is great for aiming, every game that used motion for aiming worked 10 times better and has generally high acclaim(RE4's wii port often being called the best version for instance). It probably should have been the shooter-console, but the family friendly focus in addition to players prefering dual-stick controllers at the time made it fairly niche in the end.
did you ever get to play Ninja Assault or Vampire Night on PS2? Those were some great light gun games that people hear less about than Time Crisis 2/3. I would LOVE to go play RE Dead Aim as well since I missed it at the time. The Wii (or Wii U for the HDMI wii) is good for scratching that light gun itch, but you are working off a sensor bar with a permanent icon showing you where you're "aiming"-- not shooting where you point on the screen. It's different. Ever so slightly, but if you want to play those wii light gun games, they just don't hit the same, and you need to be even more skilled when it comes to accuracy and clutching precise shots. It works seeing your reticle and adjusting, but it isn't quite as good... Probably my favorite on the system is Darkside Chronicles, bc they made the replay value worthwhile in that game through upgrades and alternate paths. That one plays so much more like an RE game than I thought it would... Also, I might be alone in saying it, but I don't mind Star Fox Zero on Wii U, people just don't want to learn new controls or be "bad" at a game they are typically "good" at, that's all. That game rules! Also, shoutout for liking the n64 Sin and Punishment as well as Star Successor on Wii, those are so good. Star Fox 64 is my all time favorite on rails shooter. I'm one of the people who think RE4 Wii Edition is the best version of that game btw.
@@orangeslash1667 I just bought Gal Gun Double Peace last month. It easily became one of my favorite games in my steam library. I also got Mirage Feathers which is cool. I might consider on getting Astebreed someday but I heard that it is somewhat "eh". I also checked NextFest demo after I comment here. I found one on-rail shooter that even got a catchy theme and abit unique take. Its called Candy Rangers.
3D platformers are still popular. It's just that we see more of them by Indie dev. There is a lot of good one. The upcoming "The Big Catch" looks so good. :)
@yaboysix I haven't played that one yet, but if you're looking for an n64 gem, definitely check out Rocket: Robot on wheels. 64 had a pretty small library, but most of them were bangers! Except Superman 64. I still have nightmares of me as a kid trying to fly through those rings!
jack and dexter 1, ratcher and clanks 2, sly cooper 2, super mario sunshine , new super mario bros and bros 3 were the ones i grew up in mid/late 2000s
personally, I think the rise of "collectathon" platformers was not good for the genre. they are so easy to develop that it encouraged alot of slop. Mario 64 controlled so well, it seems like nobody even tried to make a true 3D platformer after that. walking around slowly is just a different thing.
Most collectathons now are trying to be like Banjo Kazooie, Sly Cooper, Rayman, or Jak and Daxter. Since Mario is Nintendo's flagship, having a game that just that Im not sure would stand out well. Fun Fact: Conker was originally going to be whimsical, but Rare thought that there were too many charming platformers. So Conker became very edgy.
@@shaolinotter Demon Turf: Neon Splash has pretty good control. There's an upcoming Collectation called Project Feline, that's surprisingly fast paced.
Recently tried bugs bunny lost in time for the first time. While the ending was somewhat underwhelming, the game itself was a lot of fun and very creative
This may sound harss, but the problem was Super Mario 64. After that, every developer tried that type of 3D -formula, but failed miserably. Super Mario 64 was simply too good and unique. Sure, there were Banjo -Kazooie, Spyro The Dragon, Donkey Kong 64, Ape Escape, Rocket Robot On Wheels, and Conker's Bad Fur Day that all were excellent games. But ultimately, concept was too much for developers to handle. They really struggled with free -rolling gameplay -concept on platformers. Losed "red string" when trying it on larger scale, as seen on Banjo -Tooie and Jak And Daxter. While Nintendo has minds to master this type of gameplay, perhaps others should not even try, or they waste years. However Rayman 2 & 3 were superb examples of 3D -platforming done right, courtesy of not doing Mario 64. There is a place for 3D -platformers as seen on current Sonic Generations -game for example, but not for 3D -puzzle platformers outside Kyöto -shi.
Another great 3D platformer series that came out in the modern day is Spark the Electric Jester. The original game is 2D, but Spark 2 and 3 feel like Adventure era Sonic games but more polished
I wouldn't simply call it a 'more polished Sonic Adventure,' but rather 'Sonic Adventure evolved,' since the levels in Spark 3 are designed quite a bit differently compared to Adventure.
I bought Pumpkin Jack after seeing this and, wow, I haven't had such silly fun with a game in a long time. The theming is so good, especially right now in late October. It's just fun, no bullshit
It's easier to write bland interactive movies hidden behind flashy graphics and the same mechanics that have been around for almost 20 years, than to create actually fun games. That's why.
I LOATHE cutscenes bc of this. I can't stand them, and I never cared about a video game's story in general, unless they let me play it, instead of telling me or showing me.
Sadly i think the only large gaming company who will consistently release these type of games anymore is Nintendo. Other gaming giants have abandoned the genre for corridor walking simulators with more dialogue and cutscenes than actual gameplay
3D platformers fell out of favor because a few reasons: 1. Oversaturation of them in the market. The 5th and 6th generations were absolutely bloated with 3D platformers. People always remember the good ones like Mario 64, Rayman, Banjo, Crash, and Spyro. But for every one of these there was another dozen that were mediocre to bad. 2. The evolution of 3D graphics. Devs started dipping their toes into storytelling a lot more when the ps2/xbox/gamecube allowed for characters to actually express emotions and voice acting without looking cartoonish and blocky. We started getting things like 3D GTA, God of War, Silent Hill 2, KOTOR, MGS2/3, etc. Even the platformers started getting more edgy. Just look at Ratchet and Clank, Jak 2/3 compared to 1, and Shadow the Hedgehog. Once the ps3/360 era started, realism became way more desirable as there was a want for more mature storytelling once semi-realism was achievable.
Of course I remember. I'd rather have the golden age of platformers again than to have this woke modern-day DEI live service slop that we're getting now like Concord, Suicide Squad (etc...).
Luckily, there are gamers out there who still make video games. I feel like we're headed towards another great crash, and the indies are going to be left standing when after the smoke settles.

Micro transactions, skins, online play for pay. Once the devs find out how to make us pay more, they will come back. Imagine you playing banjo, and it's got 5 different currencies, and you gotta pay for the jiggies.
I know Kirby in the forgotten land was the last one I played a couple of years ago. I'm not sure, I didn't play it, but princess peach: showtime might be a platformer
3D platformers are fun. But a lot of them like Crash aged badly. Collectathons arent that fun now (aside from mario 64 and banjo). Open world games are in because you can do whatever you want. 3d platformers will always be a special part of my childhood, but other than Mario I dont think I would be interested in any 3D platformers.
Platforming is general too barebones. Best ones rely on a lot of extra mechanics like zelda-esque tool puzzles and combat. My favorites platformers were of course Jak, alice, and prince of persia series.

I bought the Switch specifically for Octopath Traveler. I don't regret that decision at all.
Switch is a hybrid, not just a handheld. It's both a home console and handheld.
no it is not. it's a mobile device that has an out port. that's it. don't fall for marketing lies. there's nothing wrong with the switch but it is not a home console. it just has video out
Finally a real gamer.
Respect dude
Subbed ✌️
Also that last game you showed 😮 😮 😮
I need to buy all these
Thanks! You can't really trust a lot of reviews these days. My goal was to give these games a spotlight, but I felt like I needed to show people that I actually play games
I'd recommend corn kidz 64. It's around $4-$7 and it's such a faithful throwback, it feels like you're emulating an n64 game
3D platformers were the original open world games. One was popular, everyone had to follow the trend.
Omg, I almost wanted to sell my PC before seeing this. Thank you so much!
Buy a steam deck
I have all original consoles and games because they are my favorite genre.
I’m glad indie devs are bringing back 3D platformers.
Awesome video. I'd love to try all of those games and hopefully I will at some point. In particular, pseudoregalia looks reeeally cool.
Among all of the cool old games you mentioned, let me shout out chameleon twist, a really cool n64 game, and castlevania 64.
Astrobot has really brought my love for this genre back in focus. Such a great title. Also a game called Bakeru is a cool little gem that i'm loving so far. Check it out.
Shout out to Spark The Electric Jester 3, since you mentioned not liking how the 3D Sonic games railroad you. This game actually allows you to have full control at all times, so the game is entirely based around your own precision and skill and sometimes creativity.
I've had this game recommended so many times that I had to check it out. This game looks insanely fun!
Daaamn I can’t believe you missed Cavern of Dreams on your search. That one is amazing and later in the game lets you totally break out of bounds to find entire areas as if you’re finding real hidden stuff from an old N64 game
great video, love 3d platformers.
Also, i recommend checking out Demon Turf.
Another really good one is tonic trouble on n64 Basically a Tech demo of rayman 2
I've heard a few people recommend this one so far. I played the great escape, but this one went under my radar
@@Tenacityfromtheglass (Starshot Space circus fever) That's another odd one It's like banjo but a Juggler kind of rare now I recently got every n64 Platformer loose.
The problem is console 3d platformers are on the downslope. I don't support digital games, so these games you featured I will never play or support unless a physical copy is released. Astro Bot is getting a lot of praise and its on my list to pick up
Spark the Electric Jester 3 is the best 3D sonic game. Everyone who liked the Sonic Adventure games should try it.
But if you want something completely different, Lorn's Lure is a unique and innovative platformer. It's in the first person perspective, with a very good atmosphere and interesting setting.
thanks for all these recommendations! I want these games so badly
Remember when we had more genres than just FPS and occasionally TPS?
Man 3d platformers. These games are ones I normallt flock to. My personal favorite by far has to be the psychonauts series. A 3d platformer collectathon about a boy who is psychic and has to use his powers to save the world. (There was also a vr game but i haven’t played that.) The first game and its sequel have a great world and characters. I love it.
I think we’re seeing a revitalisation of 3D platformers because the people who grew up on those games are now able to find so many resources to make the games they loved
I can hear ya talk about platformers for 10 more videos
I'm happy to know people like us haven't forgotten how important these games are.
Bro i been watching yur videos lately and it feels like i found someone who thinks exactly like me, bro its like finding a long lost friend 😅 everyone else i come across on social media is so toxic but dang finally you are a man of culture my friend @Tenacityfromtheglass
Amazing vid man, thank you SO much because instead of doing a 3 hour long video essay critique on how 3d platformers are dead and how its all because of capitalism and greed, instead you showed that they aren’t in fact dead and you just have to look for them a with a bit more effort
Now I watch my games more than I play them. Literal movie games. I hate it. Give me gameplay man.
If I can recommend you 2 games you didn't mention that definitely has that 90s 3D platformer vibe, then it would be Cavern of Dreams and Lunistice
I plan on playing cavern of dreams soon. This is my first time hearing about lunistice. Thank you!
People forget that Gravity Rush for the PS Vita was also a 3D platformer game.
Such simpler times. When gaming focused on the fun before anything else.
Low poly 3D collectathon recommendation: Cavern of Dreams, available on Steam and Nintendo Switch!
Rocket mentioned, instant like!
If you haven’t already, try the Toree games and Lunastice. 3d platformers are my favorite genre and there are so many great indie ones out there.
Love your channel.
No Spyro in thumbnail kills me
This video hits home with me. I really like some good mobile ports of platformers. You can play a lot of em with controller hooked up via Bluetooth or just by mobile controls
Check out the gamesir g8+. I've never held a controller this premium, and it was made for mobile
New Devin Chase vid? Let's goo
Big fan here too. He is an actual gamer with great opinions
I think 3d platformers more or less "evolved" into parkour heavy games like prince of persia and assassin's creed
I have all original consoles and games because they are my favorite genre.
My favorite game is Banjo kazooie and the new pennys big breakaway
You mentioned 3D Sonic games. There are recent games paying homage to the Sonic Adventure games. Spark The Electric Jester 2 and Spark The Electric Jester 3. You might enjoy them, as they seem to be more refined than the Sonic Adventure games, especially Spark 3. Also Spark The Electric Jester 1 is a 2D game that is like a mix of Sonic & Kirby, if you'd want to check that out as well.
I have Spark on my list of games to try out. I wasn't expecting to get this many recommendations and I'm ecstatic to play more of these gems
Corn Kidz 64 even has scanlines! that´s awesome
The one genre I want more of though not the only one.
I swear I’ve seen one of your videos, I looked at a bunch of your videos, I dunno.
A speed runners 11:36 WHAT DREAM
This is pretty cool. Any recommendations for a game like space station silicone valley? I loved that Game
And im 20 and i play them first time on my ps2 3 years ago and never looked back to my ps5
@@Sneaky_racoon_sly if u want a good good ps2 game, check out resident evil 4. Need for speed carbon and most wanted are also 10/10 racing games
personally, I think the rise of "collectathon" platformers was not good for the genre. they are so easy to develop that it encouraged alot of slop.
@@orangeslash1667 Rayman is the only game you mentioned where controlling your character well matters at all. that's why mario remains unchallenged
I didn't know I needed crackhead Prince of Persia with a fishing rod, but I absolutely must have crackhead Prince of Persia with a fishing rod
YES!
When I rode that minecart for the first time and that music started playing, I was grinning from ear to ear.
Great video.
There's this new game called Penny's Big Breakaway by the guys who did Sonic Mania
got any more recommendations?
"Yellow taxi goes vroom" the name sounds kinda dumb but my god!
Sadly i think the only large gaming company who will consistently release these type of games anymore is Nintendo. Other gaming giants have abandoned the genre for corridor walking simulators with more dialogue and cutscenes than actual gameplay
3D platformers fell out of favor because a few reasons:
Despite not being 100% a platformer, i miss Goemon from Konami's Ganbare Goemon (or Mystical Ninja).
@@Tenacityfromtheglass Collect-a-thon were needed back then due to hardware limitations. Once open world games become a tread, Collect-a-thons were seen as redundant.

I play games because of the gameplay, not the graphics
I play games exactly because of these types of graphics, it makes the creator much more creative. (Next to the gameplay, music, etc as well of course)
Micro transactions, skins, online play for pay.
Once the devs find out how to make us pay more, they will come back.
Imagine you playing banjo, and it's got 5 different currencies, and you gotta pay for the jiggies.
What happened is the gaming industry became obsessed with growth and profit instead of making games as a passion and simply as a living
I loved Lego Island on the PSX
Great content
There are ALOT of really good 3d platformers on pc right now (i tracked development for at least 50 of them). Its absolutely bonkers honestly.
I'm so mad that I've been missing out this entire time
I mean, Aren't they still? A lot of Nintendo games are platformers.
I know Kirby in the forgotten land was the last one I played a couple of years ago. I'm not sure, I didn't play it, but princess peach: showtime might be a platformer
Have you played Psychonauts 2?
3D platformers are fun. But a lot of them like Crash aged badly.
Collectathons arent that fun now (aside from mario 64 and banjo).
Open world games are in because you can do whatever you want.
3d platformers will always be a special part of my childhood, but other than Mario I dont think I would be interested in any 3D platformers.
I will always have a soft spot for Gex. 🦎
I heard that Spark The Electric Jester is good on Switch
I'm gonna check it out
they still are popular dingus, people still GRIND mario odyssey and Mario 64
Pac-Man World 2 was my shit.
I played pac man world on the switch and loved it! I'm gonna have to check this one out
@@Tenacityfromtheglass do it. Pac man world 2 makes world 1 look bland. Pac man world 2 is top tier imo
I can relate so much with you same for me
Play the video at 1:25 x speed if you don't like his talking speed. I did it half way and dont regret it
Platforming is general too barebones. Best ones rely on a lot of extra mechanics like zelda-esque tool puzzles and combat. My favorites platformers were of course Jak, alice, and prince of persia series.
