Let me know your opinion about criticism in academia, especially if you think I missed something! Thanks!

I love the quote at the end ‘a lot of people are smart, distinguish yourself by being nice’. We need this kind of positivity in academia!

Hi Matthias, great video and video series! Already recommended it to my students! There is one aspect, you did not address, the cultural aspect. Scientists from different cultural backgrounds might feel differently even about criticism you presented in, what you consider, a polite way. I always try to keep this in mind. For example, several times I received reviews for my manuscripts from reviewers from the US. Some of the comments were quite direct and sounded harsh when I read them. They weren’t strictly speaking impolite, but I would have phrased them differently and in a less direct way. Keep up this great series! Julius

Thanks Julius. Yes, this is a great additional point I haven't included in the video. But an important one! :)

Hi Sir, could you please provide advice how to reply to a vague letter about 'no progress' letter to cast a student out but didn't or doesn't provide any info about what or where to improve?

sorry I can't really comment on individual cases; but you could ask for more detail and explanation, writing that you are seeking this input to help you improve in the future.
