    Senior Design Project -- University of Pennsylvania (2012)
    WAZER -- www.wazercut.com
    Adam Libert -- www.AdamLibert.com
    (also on vimeo: vimeo.com/7576...)
    Objective:
    My team of five decided to create the first ever, small-scale, low-cost, and easy-to-use waterjet cutter, finally making this great technology available to hobbyists and small businesses on a budget.
    Project Details:
    I was the lead mechanical designer on this project and custom designed a fully waterproof and environmentally sealed XY gantry that would be able to withstand the water and abrasive from the waterjet. The waterjet has a cutting work space of 12"x14" and yet the machine is entirely self-contained to a footprint of only 2 feet by 2 feet, meaning that it can be easily rolled through a doorway and fit in the corner of any room. As well, it requires only a typical electrical outlet and shop air supply to run, making it a feasible option for universities, hobbyists, and small businesses with a budget of $5000 or less. The waterjet is low maintenance, requires only minimal training to run, and is able to cut through 1/4" aluminum and 1/8" steel to a tolerance of 0.005".
    Results:
    This project won the Mechanical Engineering Senior Design competition, and each of us on the team was presented with the Gemmill Award for Outstanding Creativity.

    I love seeing smart kids taking a crack at high-tech engineering problems.
    And I like it even better when they succeed.
    Best wishes for your future careers, gentlemen!
    Having a machine like this, in any machine shop, especially at an isolated location, or on a ship, would be such a blessing! You need a part; so you just look-up the part number on the internet, down-load the CAD file, load up your cutter software, plug the water jet into the USB port, add a piece of metal/plastic stock, and minutes later, you've fabricated a perfect part.
    So much better than ordering a part, waiting a week for delivery, and telling the client their valuable machine will be down in the meantime.
    Someone is going to make a lot of money selling machines like this...

      *I went to a state school and we had the pressure set wrong. On the first test it cut through the floor and carved a 5" tube through the Dean's dog. Bummer.*

    I'm really curious as to what actually costs 10.000$ Admittedly I know nothing about the water pumps or waterjet nozzles, but other than those two systems, this thing is a pretty basic CNC machine that can be bought (or made) for under 400$
    Do those compressor thingies actually cost 6-7k?

    I'm good on the $5,000 cost.... but I'm not going to put up the entire $5,000 on an unknown company. A deposit, yes I can do that and when the machine is available, I'll pay for the remainder. December 2017 is a long time to wait.... plus there are always issues with the first design.... I imagine you will be offering an extended warranty to fix any bugs?

      We’re developing a couple of variety’s of waterjets in small tables for larger cutting at pressures of 30,000 to 60,000 psi. 30,000psi machine will cost approx $10,000 delivered. Probably summer 2019 you will see them popping up everywhere.

  • @faxxzc
    @faxxzc 5 лет назад +3

    this will never be cost effective because the garnet cost will kill you. at 10000 psi you will use approx. 6x the garnet that a 60000 psi waterjet would use for the same cut.
    this would be the same as buying the cheapest inkjet thinking you would save money but then spend a fortune on ink.

    • @aion2177
      @aion2177 4 года назад

      aha interesting. can't this garnet be collected and reused? Are there other alternatives then using garnet from expensive companies? can't this garnet or something similar be made at home?

    • @mafketeltje1988
      @mafketeltje1988 11 месяцев назад

      But you can increase cutting speed also 6x? And you can make cut in thicker steel that a lower psi will still not handle? And with some engineering and software and system optimisation you can reduce pressure and garnet usage to the optimum you need depending on your material and time or money you have to spend... its just determining the maximum performance it can do, not everything below and how those would do...

    10k PSI FOR $10 000 or 100K psi for $100 000. To be honest I would not buy it.

    • @JaakkoF
      @JaakkoF 6 лет назад +1

      And the 10k version still works, so why buy a more expensive machine if you don't need the extra pressure? And to be fair, increasing the output pressure is a simple matter of decreasing the output piston size or increasing the input side air cylinder.

    $28,000 will get you a brand new state of the art CNC waterjet machine from the best on the market. While this project is cool, the abilities of the machine are not. For $28000 you can cut 6 inch thick steel. Accurately. Low cost for this machine? A $20 jigsaw could do the same work with ease.
    Definitely cool though. Still has no use in industry. Got my brand new waterjet 2 weeks ago. $127,000 USD. I wont be losing any business to this toy. Unless customers want to pay 20 times what I currently charge them.
    I am not impressed. People hear 10 thousand psi and are amazed. That is a lot of pressure. Machines today run ten times that pressure. 20 years ago this would of been impressive.
    $28,000 will get you a cnc machine that will cut at 35000 psi. 4 x 4 cutting table. Built by the best in the business. I don't mention names cause I am not a sales rep.
    Guys are trying to sell this machine. Not worth it. It is a joke of a machine.
    Go buy the machine that a guy built with a pressure washer for $500. It is useless too but at least you save $9000.
    Joke of a machine!

      @glennedward2201 6 лет назад

      Richard Chubey $30,000 will got you a 90,000psi 8x12 waterjet depending where you shop.the technology has advanced to date that making a 45-60,000psi version of this can be built and sold for $10,000 using a 4x4 table. Our company is already working on it. Unfortunately you will lose business to it. If you own any CNC machinery you should never be dependent on others feeding you work or you won’t least very long in these days being a job shop. The days of job shops are dwindling. Be an inventor and sell your own products rather than services that’s where the money is at!
