Swedish disc dyer here:
1. Pro plastic is not great for dyeing, acceptable but not great.
2. The Pro Chemical And Dye colors should be mixed with HOT (almost boiling) water. 1 teaspoon color with 1 teaspoon HOT water. Mix. Then add the acetone.
3. The acetone + dye will work better if you let it sit for 24h before using it.
4. Pro Chemical And Dye colors need heat to work 100%. I use a heating mat but a lot of people use also use a heating lamp. Heat for 2-4h and then leave it without heat for the full 24h.
I have a video on my channel where I show some methods and several tutorials is in the works!
Let me know if you have any questions or need some help :)
Thank you for your help!! I will definitely be trying this in the future 😄
@@missfrisbees Best tip I can give is to MIX the HECK out of the dyes, the agitation will help get the particles to suspend in the acetone, if you don't shake them until your arms fall off, and you see a lot of particles in the bottom, that means there's less dye in the solution, but yes, do take off the top of the mix with your dropper as Chris said. 1/4tsp dye per 2oz acetone is plenty. Measure your acetone (shotglass). This might have been the gremlin, everything else you guys did looked like it should work (except for Pro plastic). Get the discrepublic starter pack of ProChem (6 colours for under $30) is a great starting point. Welcome to the fun of dyeing!
I am so glad you posted this! I was literally gearing up to dye some discs today, same exact setup, and now I am hesitant... Going to be watching these comments like a hawk. I did watch a tutorial video where he left his discs in the glue for 40 hours, but they came out too dark, so now I am in the dark. Great content!
Haha! I hope the answer turns up for the both of us 😆
Check out "the difference is doing it" 👌
Dying discs is fun. I like to watch "the difference is doing it" RUclips channel for detailed tips and guides.
"Wow theres no air bubbles!"
"i got the good good" LMAO
I rolled about 5-6 balls of cling film and place in a pan… then poured some hot dye on the balls, the place the disc on top and keep pressed down with weight for 5 hours… worked well for me and worth a try 👍🏼
Good luck on nailing it for the future 🎨 loved the vid and inspired me to try again 😉☺️
It definitely seems like shaving cream is the way to go. Thanks for giving this a try so I know better what to do! It does look like a lot of fun. Also that Sapphire was amazing!
I'm going to try it with white sneakers 👟😁
I like the Sapphire, but the other two do like nice, very subtle.
Fun experimenting! I have not yet done any kind of "bed" dyeing yet. I did just do my first spin dye and loved how that turned out. My next practice is going to be with some stencil dyes.
I've never messed with glue beds but have had really good luck using prochem and lotion. Mix the dye with a little water and then lotion in a plastic squirter bottle, then use that for designs.
Also yoy can use idye poly as well, they are cheaper than the prochem but are smaller but it would be a way to get different colors for less money
Ready for round 2 of disc dyeing!
part of the reason why the enigma looks faded is because any translucent plastic like champion, Lucid, etc. needs to sit at least 48 hours in my experience. Also if you can use a heating lamp to apply heat that helps to make the color really pop.
Powder dyes are so much fun for dyeing shirts and sweaters. Sprinkle the dye on the fabric. Tie up. Then dip in your vinegar solution. Some of the best dyes I've done were with synthetic powders. If you have extra powder, try it out!
I love the sapphire.
I use the RIT synthetic dye and it works really well.
Your only choice is to continuing experimenting and trying different stuff. More discs and more content. Win-win. Haha. You can have my iDye Poly dyes, if I can find them. I bought a few packs and some jars, but haven't got the time or the space.
I just started getting into disc dying a couple days ago. This is exactly how mine went too. 😅 the only one that worked was a red but now my disc looks like a tomato. Lol
Want to add different texture styles? Use bubblewrap or plastic wrap to place the onto. Plastic wrap you can shrivle and wrinkle and makes nice lines. Bubble wrap will give you a fun pattern.
The Tern does look nice.
pro (sorta) tip - before adding acetone to dyes in the glass jars, add a very small splash of hot water. be very careful not to overdo it, but the hot water helps to activate the powder before it dissolves in the acetone
That’s what we did the second time around! It helped?? With the blue only lol but not the purple and pink. I’M STUMPED!
@@missfrisbees some prochem colors are stronger than others. i have no experience with cerise, but royal purple is normally quite strong and caribbean is a bit fainter. if the hot water doesn’t help when mixing, you can try submerging the jar in some hot water before starting. i recently started doing that and i got some better saturation out of it
edit: i almost forgot, but adding heat using a heat lamp or even using your oven (would not recommend) also helps immensely with saturation and also cuts down on dye time
It's interesting that the shaving cream method (the one without acetone) was more vibrant than any others. Many shaving cream methods also use a misting bottle to wet the dye with water, not with acetone, and they seem to come out well. Without knowing a lot about this, it might be possible that the acetone was working against you w.r.t. saturation, like it was washing itself off. Could be wrong, though.
I love how simple these techniques are! Did you have better luck with the tips from the other comments here? I've got a white Big-Z Comet that's BEGGING for color, especially with winter coming up. I'd love to try my hand at making it pretty!
You need to get on Jomez, I need my favorite female player to get recognized.
@@ShaneAlan1 Troll? 12? My wife and I watch her videos as she's the only good Canadian female disc golfer (that we've seen). Not to mention she reviews a bunch of disc golf courses right near me as we both live in Ontario. Not sure why encouraging her is a problem for you.
I just got my starter kit today!!
It's Doing It that counts, you kids are on the right track! We've got a few video that might help, but maybe it would be cooler to collab and do some together. Hit us anytime!
Just before Chris started to rinse off, the second try, I thought, wow that one is going to be soooo cool. Good trying at least 💑.
Use the florescent dyes with work best with white glue and flotrole. And let it sit for 24 hours or use a heat lamp and that will minimize time
When I was a little kid my dad was a college basketball coach. I was the water and towel boy for the team and even got to go on road trips with them so I was a pretty big deal. After one game the players had a shaving cream fight and I ate a big handful of it assuming it was whipped cream. It definitely did not taste as good as it looked.
I used star and champion plastic and that worked well for me. Maybe the pro plastic isn't great for dye.
So I am no pro but I recently have been trying to dye discs. I know you need to dye premium plastic. Secondly I have have had a issue with lighter colors not being vibrant. The last disc I dyed I left in front of a space heater on low and that seemed to work much much better! It was only one disc but it's the only thing I changed from the other discs so maybe try keeping it in front of a heat source while you are letting the dye take.
@brett McHan heat definitly helps, also i have found with prochems lighter colors it really helps to add a bit of water to your dye and aceton mix !
Maybe it to heavy white! Beat n best to get clear frisbee

Skip straight here real quick… Just thank me later 😂
Sharpie Extreme apparently is UV resistant, but apparently only comes in Black. If they come out with color Sharpie Extreme, then that might be another thing to try.
You're measuring the dye all exactly with a teaspoon, and then just adding acetone without measuring that. It's all about concentrations/proportions!
It's like cooking, you don't measure a bit of sugar very precisely, and then just dump any random quantity of flour (maybe 10x too much) into a big mixing bowl.
Letting it sit longer will help alot with the vibrancy.
If this dye has cobalt in it, from a pottery background it’s really potent. You might have to use more of the other colors. Idk what’s in these dyes. But in glazes Iron and cobalt will drown all other colors. That’s reds and blues.
I literally just did my first dye ever yesterday! What are the odds!?
Yo shout out true north disc golf! My hometown store!
Always check amazon for the glue, got the same glue for 22bucks and pro chem dyes are like 44 for 6 jars or something. I had the same issue waiting 24 hours, 48 seemed to be a lot better and i had to add more dye to the acetone. Temps seem to have something to do with it too, im only 6 discs into dying myself
Damn he snagged a hot one
How much hot water to the powder and then how much acetone to the water/dye mix?
Let's play a round!!!!🤟🏼
Heat is the key.
Love this video. I'm looking at dyeing some discs too. The glue method, from what I've seen online, seems to produce cool vibrant result. But I feel it's so wasteful and bad for environment to use so much glue for each disc and then put it down the drain. Does anyone know of any better, more environmentally-friendly option?
U can reuse the gluebed , just pour it back to a container , doesnt matter if the glue looks dirty , the color will sit on top of the glue , u might get some minimal pickup from the old glue but nothing bad
A lot of this has to do with the type of plastic. Pro plastic does not take dye well at all. I highly recommend getting Star plastics and doing the same method.
If you wanted to try another great plastic to dye, go for K1 plastic from kastaplast!!! And do a lotion bed method!!!
All in all, you guys didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just the type of plastic.
The ESP and Neo plastic should have taken the dye pretty well! Apparently we have to follow some steps with the dye to get full use of the dye! Excited to try it again 😊
Heat is pretty important to using the neon PCAD dyes. I like to add worm dye to my powdered dyes. I think it gives them more punch. Another easy technique is a lotion bed. Queen Helene lotion at Walmart is a excellent choice for lotion beds. Then mix dye with lotion. Lay down a pattern and swirl or pattern with a toothpick. Fun stuff. Keep doing it!
I believe you chose the wrong plastic discs. Example: The PRO Tern is a cheap plastic For Innova best results come from STAR plastic. Go with Premium plastic discs for dyeing. And yes at times when applying dye to the clear glue the dye will be near invisible but it always comes out vibrant on premium discs. Still enjoyed the video. We all fail at this till we try this a few times.
Why did the blue dye stick to the sol but the purple and pink did not!? I just think it is something we did with the dye ☹️
For the glue beds, I've seen straws used. The toothpick method is better for the shaving cream.
what did you use to remove the stamp? nail polish remover?
100% acetone! 😄
Paint remover works fine too and might be a bit less aggressive than acetone
Try shining a black light on the them...
Maybe you should leave it for 48 hours instead of 24 hours longer could be better
I got you guys my friend is a professional at dying discs give me a few minutes
pink and orange pigments take longer to adhere to things
I've tried dyeing discs on at least five occasions, all of them epic failures. lol
Use Michael's 30 percent off coupons on your big thing of glue
If you guys could do a follow up to this that would be awesome. I had the same problem with dull colors. Great job though and please share
I’ve been dying for a few months now and my guess is that the plastics that those discs are made of aren’t good at taking the dye. There are some plastics that just don’t work. If you’re really interested in getting some good dyes go to the r/discdyeing subreddit. There’s a wiki pinned to the top of the page. That wiki has a list of plastics and how well they take dyes. That’ll help you pick the right discs to dye.
what type of dye do you need?
Use RIT synthetic dye it’s the best
Imagin pouring that ammount of glue just straight down the drain, might as well beg the higher powers for your pipes to clog and the enviroment to just go to hell. Maybe stick to the shavin cream.
Can I have a link for you to dye disc
Liked the video not so much the art. 2 days in glue bed ?? Idk I’ll try that
Try rit dye more mix it 50 50 with acetone use a clear glue bed let set for 24 hours. I did my first one turned out great colors really pop
Wrong plastic. Star, Fuzion, ESP, 400, etc.
I definitely think it’s something we are doing with the dye! My sol only took the blue dye and no other colour.. it doesn’t make any sense! The neo enigma also should have held the dye no?
@@missfrisbees neo holds dye VERY WELL. forget acetone and glue- use Floetrol
@@missfrisbees Yes, that should hold dye well as Gilbert says. Come to think of it I have had some of the ProChem dyes not take. Specifically the teal. One thing you may want to try is a heat lamp 12"-18" above while resting for 24 hrs. Good luck.
Thank you! Hoping these dyes will be put to use and not a waste of
money 😬
@@missfrisbees look up Floetrol Cell method- easy and works!
You diluted the dye a little too much. It was to watery.
Rit synthetic dye is much better I think than that dye. Also you can add heat. Like a heat blanket under the pan or over the top.
