These commercials actually did more for Canadian unity than the Canadian government did
Heck yah we we proud of our country and what we were known for those are the commercials anyone from the 80s and 90s remember still to this day and get sucked right back into it like it was yesterday and felt that pride ready to yell out i am Canadian there was actually quality tv regardless if you had peasant vision and if the weather was right and the rabbit ears were in the sweat spot you may get a 4th channel on Sunday and so much more that every Canadian knew and loved and was proud to stand behind how times have changed
Ostensibly. Most of us are noobs obsessed with the NHL playoffs and likely don't take the time to find out more concrete attempts at unity that were obscure or subtle, too much for the average person to pay attention
Too bad there wasn't a state run beer company lol

I'm a 70 yr old from Alberta that's played his share of hockey and drank more than my share of Canadian. I believe in sudden death overtime, 3 day weekends, big fireworks on Canada Day, helping to push a car stuck in the snow, Lord Stanley's Cup, time and a half for overtime, barbecuing in the winter and taking my dog everywhere with me. I am Canadian.
From Saskatchewan: Keep truckin' dude. I played old timers hockey all over the US and Canada until 83 years old. Ever go to the Snoopy tournament? That's our chance to prove to Americans their beer tastes like panther pee. Now 90 amd missing the hockey crowd.

I still remember the Summit Series in '72, when an entire country collectively held it's breath until Paul Henderson pulled the trigger. The roar of Canadians cheering was probably heard in Kansas. @@Martin.Wilson Christmas was time to get/give or grab, skates… sticks…skidoos… and sneak a little snuff, and then duck! for the puck, ball or some big brothers flying fists. Lol. No malice or hostility in any of it, it was just a part of growin up. We all knew how to drive/ride/shoot by the time we went to school back then.
As a Canadian. I wish they would bring that last commercial back. I think we as a country really could use the reminder of what makes us a strong, incredible country!

That speech at the end was what started the "I am Canadian" slogan and is still the most patriotic thing ever broadcast on Canadian Television.
Its extremely good. Last few hours of the Vancouver Olympics ought to take the top spot though.

As Canadians, we are a nice friendly bunch. We will help a total stranger push their car out of snowed in parking spot. We are likely to apologize to a wall for bumping into it, just as much as we are likely to apologize to you for you bumping into us. We will drive as far as we have to in a blizzard if it means helping someone out. Our tiniest of towns will welcome 10s of thousands of stranded travellers with open arms and hospitality...like we did on 9/11. We will gladly help however we can whenever we're asked.
But NEVER mistake a Canadians kindness for weakness. Because we will show you just what the phrase "kill them with kindness"...means to us 🙂
The scene where he grabs the guys jacket and pulls it over his head is a fighting technique used in hockey called "Jerseying" where u haul your opponents jersey over his head like that immobilizing him so you can beat the crap out of him. Nobody knows why there is so much fighting in hockey. we just love it. hahaha

I don't even like hockey, but came to the comments to make sure someone pointed out the jerseying, it kind of upset me that he missed the Canadian stereotypical fight move in his discussion on how stereotypes were used in that one as a weapon against the Canadian. The whole energy of "I'll show you a F*#king Canadian stereotype, eh!?" Is a lot bigger of a joke than just "Canadians will throw hands".
If you buy a branded hockey jersey that says it was used on ice, you can check to see if it's authentic by finding the Jersey Strap. Real jerseys have an attachment that hooks onto the pants to prevent it from being pulled up over your head. It used to be a penalty if it wasn't fastened.
12:34 When the first "I am Canadian" commercial came out, it was a massive hit. It gave Canadians ~unapologetic~ permission to be proud of who we are for the first time in my life.
I'll never forget that man on the stage, and his building energy:

The Canadian military has a lot of Scottish bagpipe culture woven in.
You probably hear a lot of bagpipes at Remembrance Day parades.

John Cabot took possession of Newfoundland for England in 1497, followed by Jacques Cartier exploring the Gulf of St. Lawrence on behalf of the King of France in 1534, eventually taking possession of the land around the Gaspé Peninsula and founding Montréal and Québec City. So no, the Scottish were not the earliest settlers in Canada.

This commercial is still one of my favorite all these years later. I dont drink beer but man this commercial made me feel as proud to be Canadian as when we won the gold medal in mens and womens hockey in the 2010 vancouver winter olympics
"They're not dents, they're goals". In 2009 I bought a 5-year-old house that had been owned by a couple with three teenaged boys. The basement was unfinished, which meant that it had been framed, insulated, and covered with plastic vapour barrier. There was an octagonal section under the kitchen breakfast nook. In that corner alone, the plastic vapour barrier was riddled with holes. I took more than 140 pucks out of the fibreglass insulation before I drywalled the place. Still have them in a wire basket downstairs. And yeah - I am Canadian.
The only thing that surprises me is they abandoned 140 pucks. We would've taken out the insulation to get them back - lol.

That's hilarious. My brother and I used to practice slap shots on my parents garage door. My dad even used tape to put on X for taking shots at. 40 years later, they still live there, and the door still has all the dings in it. Lol

I remember seeing the "Joe Canadian" commercial for the first time after a game of curling in Red Deer while having a beer with the opposing team. The entire lounge stopped talking when the ad came on, and loudly roared afterwards. It instantly touched a nerve.

yeah, it's the "traditional" move to signal a fight is over and people may now break it up.
I say this as security. It was part of our little... cultural reactions training. Certain nations/cultures have reactions or behaviours to watch out for. For example the French and English like to start fights with headbutts.
So much so there is a "fight strap" on jeresys to prevent it and a penalty when it happens. "Players who engage in a fight without a fight strap and have their jerseys pulled off will receive an automatic game misconduct"
The last commercial "I am Joe and I am Canadian" has become the most famous and iconic commercial here in Canada. Everybody knows it. "Joe" in the commercial is an actor from my home town of Truro, here in Nova Scotia, Canada. He went on to become a national radio presenter on CBC radio and now has his own radio show out of Halifax.

And probably the *MOST* parodied of all Canadian commercials...even William Shatner (Capt. Kirk) got into the act.
Hinterland Who's Who, Canadian Heritage Minutes, and House Hippo...all iconic, all recognizable - Hinterland Who's Who just from the sound - and all will bring back memories if someone just mentions them.

@@robertsmith4681 Fun fact about that. When the Air Farce was doing their radio show, and taping in various places around Canada, Mike was always from some small town nearby the place they were taping in. It was only when they moved to television did they settle on Canmore.
The fight in the office (with the pulling of the top over the head) is how hockey players do it. These commercials were fabulous!! Takes me back. ❤️🇨🇦

Molson is definitely known for these commercials. They're popular because they're funny of course, but also because they are 100% accurate about Canadians' experiences when dealing with many Americans. The commercials are much more of a social commentary than I think people outside of Canada realize.

To answer your question, yes, it is normally an every day thing in the winter to scrape your car off in the morning 😅The bonus round question would've included turning your car on 10 minutes before you want to leave and letting it idle to relieve the condensation making it impossible to see through the windshield. Ultra bonus round includes when you begrudgingly layer up to brace the cold winter air, only to get outside and realize your kindly neighbour has already taken the time to clear your car for you. ❤ Canada
I’ve never minded the windshield thing so much, just let the vehicle run for a bit, and I usually just flick the wipers to knock the snow off if possible, sometimes there’s too much on there, unfortunately. 😔 The crappiest parts would be if your vehicle won’t start even after being plugged in all night, you need to shovel around the vehicle… or wait for a plow to get out. 🙈 Every couple years the battery f’s me over, not holding enough of a charge to start in the -30 to -40, and I need to go buy a new one… I should really just pre-empt it, and switch out the battery in the fall every two years, but I’ve yet to actually do so. 😂
Considering a large portion of Canadian culture comes from Britain and specifically Scotland (our first Prime Minister, John A, Macdonald, was from Scotland and Nova Scotia literally means New Scotland) so it's not surprising that you relate as much as you do to Canada! 🇨🇦❤️✌️

@@jimdevlin4949 Yeah, I'm not sure how long we could have hung onto the idea that "at least we aren't American" as the source of our national pride. That was always pretty shallow, and it means even less as own history of abuse and genocide has come to the forefront in recent years.
I am 35 years old and everyone I know, EVERYONE, knows this commercial. It is at least for me, the most successful commercial ever. It is engraved in my brain. And everytime I watch it I have goosebumps. Joe is fucking awesome.
That first commercial you showed was filmed in our living room. It took 32 takes before they were satisifed with that laugh. A day to set up, a day of filming and a day to get our space back to original.

I love the I am Joe, one. When it came out, Canadian pride swelled, and the whole country was talking about it. It was amazing.
The words are on the wall of a restaurant called Joe Beeverz. It always makes me smile
I first saw the "My name is Joe," commercial while attending a Toronto Maple Leafs game live in the early 2000s when it first aired, and 18,000 fans started cheering so loud. Gave me goosebumps. I think they recently tried re-doing that same commercial with the same guy 20+ years later.
The Pet Beaver is one of my favorite commercials of all time. I remember seeing it on TV while attending college in northern Alberta and my drinking buddies and I were all laughing our asses off! 😂
The specific audio at the end of the last commercial, where Joe proclaims: "I AM CANADIAN!" is still iconic to this day. The powerful delivery, the sweltering pride, the hockey-announcer-like reverb. Absolutely nailed it!
The part about the I AM CANADIAN commercial, that absolutely kill me every time is adter he loudly says I AM CANADIAN, there's that embarrassed little "Thank you"... always makes me LOL

Molson also had beer fridges spread out in different cities around the world, that could only be opened with a Canadian Passport....Pretty cool to watch.
I love those ads. Another beer fridge required people to say "I Am Canadian" in a various different languages before it was open. It was cute to see the people trying to figure it out - and a pretty darn good message too. It's crazy a beer ad can be seriously touching!
I loved that passport idea. I wish they were still doing it, even so that Canadians could pass out beer to others. You know, like Canadians do.

I think that my favorites were the one with the young man on the stage telling us what makes us Canadians & the pet beaver....and yes we do barbeque in the dark & wipe the snow off of our cars with our sleeves. Canada is filled with people of Scottish descent. A province of ours is called Nova Scotia meaning "New Scotland". Thanks for reviewing these, brings back memories!

I literally giggled at the “cook with a flashlight” point! This is my husband & his buddy, at the barbecue, in 2 feet of snow, subzero temperature plus wind chill, in the middle of February.😂
That last commercial gives all of us Canadians a tear in our eye every time we see it, even now, many years after it used to air on TV.

As a Canadian mother of a boy who played hockey his entire life, I can confirm those are not dents, they are indeed goals… and as the designated driveway goalie, I had goals all over my body too.

I worked at the ad agency that put together the final ad, which was the start of it all. From my memories (I worked on the print side of things): Jack Bensimon, our principal and client service guru found the insight. Writer: Glen Hunt, Art direction: Jamie Way, Creative Director: Peter Byrne. We sold a shit-ton of beer, and there were fun times.
Okay, just posted something about that ad, which may not be true, so correct me if I'm wrong; was the actor who played "Joe" actually not a professional actor but also someone who worked at the agency?
I've never met the guy and don't know his professional situation. He didn't work with us at the agency, but maybe as a third-party? I don't think so, but I don't know for sure.
The actor is Jeff Douglas from Truro Nova Scotia.

That commercial is legendary in two camps, with Canadians and with advertising people. It may not be well known internationally but you can bet ad men know about it.
These commercials will be remembered for years to come. They were a staple of Canadian unity, back when that actually existed. Thank you for sharing this, kind neighbour from across the pond! Having just found this, I loved it. Yes, I vividly remember ALL those commercials. There really wasn't any others like them at that time. We still talk about the "I am Joe, and I am Canadian!" William Shatner even did his own version to open the Montréal comedy festival one year. It's on youtube too. Worth a watch IMO. But, not being a beer drinker, I have no idea what Molson tastes like, but have been told it's one of the better ones.

Nah, if you were a young adult in the 1980s you had a “Proud Canadian” sticker on your wallet. You could only get them off the back of the Royal Reserve whiskey bottles, mickeys and 26-ers. Beer brands of choice varied but we all drank Royal Reserve when we drank rye whiskey 🥃 at least in my part of British Columbia.

um… it happened many times before these commercials, no matter how iconic they are! I backpacked UK/Europe in 1980 after high school and we were VERY PROUD TO be CANADIAN and had flags on our backpacks, t shirts etc. I still travel to this day and proudly declare my Canadian nationality. We are a highly respected nation. 🇨🇦
I’ve driven 700kms to play one hockey game…and it was worth every minute of ice time…and what happens on the ice stays on the ice. We shake hands after every game to show respect to your fellow competitors.

There is one subtle thing you may not have noticed in the office encounter where the American was teasing the Canadian. Watch again, the Canadian pulls the American's jacket over his head. That move happens sometimes during a fight in a hockey. A little added Canadiana. Thank you for being so interested in our wonderful country.
Molson Canadian & Labatt’s Blue we’re the two HUGE beers in Canada way back. They were deuling brands. Now there’s WAY more choices like Coors Light etc.. all the big U.S. ones… these 2 aren’t so big anymore I don’t think, lots of competition. I’m not a beer drinker but others could chime in here.

When I was a kid, my parents didn't like us to watch beer commercials, they'd usually mute them. But Joe's rant was loved, honoured, memorized, and frequently repeated in our house. I don't think we Canadians had ever thought about how proud we were of all those things, but we've never forgotten since. 🥰
It's true. I remember in the 90's there was a lot of talk about the Canadian identity and what it really meant to be Canadian. (At least in Ontario. Some places, like Newfoundland, had and have a strong sense of their own identity.) This commercial certainly did stand out. I feel like it was the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan where the questioning was put to rest. The U.S. did something and we didn't follow. With all that has happened since, the divide has gotten larger.

If you grew up in Canada in the 90's, these commercials were pretty iconic. So much so, that Simu Liu ( Marvel's Shang-Chi) used the original premise as the basis of his main speech when hosting the 2022 Juno Awards (Canadian Music Awards.)

The my name is Joe commercial is probably the best piece of marketing ever conceived in Canada. It was quite literally everywhere, everyone was repeating it.
My boyfriend is from Canada but he lived in the Netherlands for years and years so I made him a shirt that says "I am Euronadian" and he still wears it to this day.😂

I'm Canadian and i mostly or only saw these commercials watching playoff hockey games. i memorized the commercial " when you think of Canadians you might ask yourself, why are we the way we are? the answer is laying underneath us, literally", just for the party bus in New Zealand...it was dope, i happened to be the only Canadian on the bus too. All you Canadians, i represented us well!
Canadian here and love most of these commercials. A few I don't remember at all. Molson used to do a lot of hockey sponsorship back in the day so the ads were played during hockey. Molson still exists but now under the Coors branding label as they purchased the rights. The last commercial probably was the very best as it brought everyone in the country together, told us to have pride in our country. Thank you for the reminders.
Molson hit the winning formula at the time by tapping into the normally reserved Canadian Patriotism especially with the Joe Canadian commercial.

I was in a packed movie theatre in Ottawa (our capital 😉) on a Friday night when they showed the My Name is Joe & I Am Canadian ad before the movie. The crowd went NUTS … applauding and cheering … It was amazing. Great memory 😊 🇨🇦
Holy cow yes that happened once for me at least once. That was the biggest hit commercial in movie theatres.

It really is the best part of North America. When I saw Joe walk on stage I smiled, knowing what was coming...like everyone else here in Canada knew.
I don't play hockey or drink Canadian but I love these commercials and remember most of'em. "My name is Joe and I Am Canadian" is still quoted this many years later. The idea that we Canadians aren't proud of our country is often grossly underestimated because we're generally not loud flag wavers. I think this series is gold because it gives voice to that pride...without being rude or 'Canada F-Ya!'

My best buddy is a goalie, has the key to the local arena and drives the zamboni. He is a very popular guy from September to April.

The MY NAME IS JO commercial first played in movie theaters and it got CHEERS. It really became a part of Canadian history and the year that ad got big that actor on Canada Day was flown cross country to do that speech from one side to another. That was about the time Canada in general started thinking sod it time to start blowing our own horn.

Love the beaver one 'cause he's my cousin. Had no idea he'd done this - was a total surprise the first time I saw it on TV. His name is Cary Shields and he's also a singer/songwriter and had the lead in Rent in Toronto when it first came here 20+ yrs ago. So nice to see this included in the compilation!!

Molson Brewery was established in Montreal in 1786, the oldest brewery in North America. The Molson family still live in Montreal and own the Montreal Canadiens, the best hockey team ever ( Montrealer here!) The Molson family is originally from England.
Used to cut grass around their tomb in Mont-Royal cemetery as a 16 year old.
I believe their original fortune was made ferrying immigrants from Quebec City to Montreal in shallow draft boats. If you get into the genealogy thing, you'll eventually find thousands upon thousands of passenger lists taking passengers up the St. Lawrence River for a fee. All controlled by the Molson family. The shipping season at that time ran from middle/late May to sometime in October, depending on the weather.
So many things that are the oldest in North America seem to come from Montreal
Although Montreal isn't bad, as a truck driver myself, WTF is with the roads, highways, narrow lanes, etc? I just got back from Montreal from making deliveries (to Provigo and Maxi stores) and will be back to or through tomorrow morning.
When the Brits sent soldiers and sappers into the new colonies, they had to guarantee them six pints of beer a day, so they had to establish a brewery. Same in India. They had to add lots of hops then to get the beer down around Africa to India without spoiling. Then the breweries sprang up later.

You missed the "I am Canadian" Anthem. I remember there being a petition to make it our new national anthem. As a Canadian it still warms my heart every time I hear it.
Canadian here, and yes, these commercials were legendary when they were on and pretty much everyone who was alive in that time remembers these rather fondly.
Molson Canadian as a beer is OK, I don't drink it very often because I prefer other beers (such as Moosehead, or Heineken), but it's a good beer for "if there's nothing better on the menu" situation for me.
The commercial where the Canadian guy gets pissed, that's actually a hockey brawl move. Canadians very much LOVE to fight, it's just usually during hockey. 😁

The Beaver is truly a noble animal, the I am Joe and I am Canadian is truly a classic. These were a great series of commercials. When Team Canada plays Team USA the rivalry is real and taken very seriously. Canadians are glued to their TVs. Back in the day Molson Canadian was a very popular beer. The beer market has changed dramatically so I don't know it's standing in the market.

Scraping your windshield in Canada is an art form. Gotta make sure your wipers don't freeze overnight. Combination defroster, elbow grease, familiy secrets and the right type of scraper is knowledge passed down from father to son, lol.
As a small immigrant kid, I loved this commercial growing up. It was a unifying chant in school growing up. Felt so proud every time it played. This commercial and the beer fridges really made an impression.
A true Canadian folk guy is Stompin' Tom Conners! He travelled from East to West with songs from everywhere he went. I believe you will fall in love with the guy, we love him

I'm Canadian and I watched this just to see the Ads again ... and I laughed again. Molson Canadian is one of the larger brands and it's everywhere. You go to a party or gathering and it will be there. It's a good beer, can't wait for you to try it. And I agree with all the comments that those ads alone created a lot of patriotism
