  • The 1987 Talking Patty Play Pal from Ideal Toys was 100% a copy of the 1986 Talking Cricket from Playmates. Because Cricket did so well and revolutionized the talking dolls back into mainstream, it was only natural that other toy companies would make competition.
Ideal already had a successful doll name from the 60s, and her name was Patti Playpal. She was a revolutionary breakthrough back then as a walker doll with a blow mold body. Between the 60s and 80s she was retired and Ideal sold her name and likeness out to other companies around the world.
So when it came time to revive the name for this doll, she had to have it spelled differently to avoid copyright.
Poor Patty never did as well as Cricket and is pretty obscure today. She had a few tapes with stories and outfit sets just like cricket, but nowhere near as many.
Also from this video, you can see her technology is different than cricket, and the parts are cheaper. Crickets audio is superior to Patty. It could be cheap parts or the fact that her audio has to be transmitted from the lunchbox over to the doll.
