I am getting old now. I'm in my sixties. I studied Russian and Czech languages at university in the UK in the 70s and I spent time studying in Moscow, Leningrad (as it was then) and Brno in Czechoslovakia (as it was then). I found myself split. In both countries I was in love with the country, the culture, the history and most of all the languages. I made really great friends. I was keen to tell people at home that Russians and Czechs were not all secret agents or mindless Communist propagandists. But I was aware of the reality of living under communism. I knew who I could trust and who to avoid. I knew what to say in public and what to say in private. I knew what I had to pretend to believe. And I could see the corruption, the dishonesty, the hypocrisy and the utter helplessness of ordinary people to do anything about it. What I found complicated was this. Myself I used to like to tell people at home how people on the other side of the Iron Curtain were just like us and a lot of the propaganda was just caricature. But I would also get annoyed by people who visited the east and came back romanticising about the Soviet block, believing the propaganda and describing everything as though it was just fine. I felt it was both naive and also showed a lack of respect to the victims of a brutal regime. And this is how I feel about this film. I fully understand the human contact and the feeling that people in Belarus are just the same as everyone else. I understand that living in a dictatorship doesn't stop you from being an ordinary person. Hello Bob! I’m only 27, so I don’t know if you’re going to take my opinion seriously.. I’m Ukrainian by nationality and was born in Kyiv. And I’ve travelled a while through recent years talking to people from Syria, Lebanon or Yemen. Interestingly, the «democracy» hasn’t done anything good for these people, but the attempt to establish it by overthrowing their governments has left them homeless. On the other hand UAE is not a democratic country, but their development and happiness index are great! Singapore began as a «dictatorship of development» and without authoritarian decisions couldn’t have reached all the results it has now. So I’ve learned one great lesson: don’t disturb the country, leave it develop smoothly and pass to democracy it’s own way. No other countries should try to get into this path and disturb it, or it will be a total mess like in Syria and many other countries that US tries to change unsuccessfully 😢 And we’ll find a way to speak for ourselves, don’t worry!
Dear Bob. As a belarusian who loves his country, I'm fascinated with your understanding of the situation and at the same time terrified by the opinion of the author in the previous message. Many of the people are so used to live under the "protection" that forgot what it is to have own free will without being punished for it (for several generations already). People are so used to it that it seems to me it is some kind of a Stockholm syndrome developed by the idea that "if not this way - it is going to be worse".
Bob is spot on. The author either doesn't understand things, is deluded, or simply a paid shill. How is democracy at fault for the situations in Syria? It's precisely the authoritarian strongman who doesn't want to lose power, throwing people into the meat grinder without caring a bit. How is democracy at fault when the Houthis try to take over Yemen? What the hell are you talking about? Then you handpick the UAE and Singapore as literal exceptions that prove the rule. This is just a cheap manipulation. >Singapore began as a 'dictatorship of development,' and without authoritarian decisions, it couldn't have achieved the results it has now. Yeah, "trust me bro." Many countries didn't go that route but still achieved success. Democracy isn't perfect, but it's the best we've got. If you prefer being thrown into prison for the color scheme of your socks, just say it. Don't make up things that are not true.
@@ohthatscurious9458 You say 'leave countries to pass to democracy in their own way..' but how long does that take? Is there a time limit? Do the rest of us have to suffer the actions of dictatorships indefinitely? Example, in 2006, Putin murdered Alexander Litvinenko, in England, with Polonium. In 2018, he murdered an innocent British citizen, in England, with Novichok. England is a democracy that has never threatend to attack or invade Russia, no western country has ever threatened to attack Russia, NATO has never threatened to attack Russia. Soviet governments invented a western threat to keep themselves in power. Putin has taken that concept to another level. You watch too much RT, maybe?
I feel sad that i had to scroll down so much, to find someone with a realistic view of the currant situation. Most of the people in these comments would prefer a totalitarian regime for perceived "safety and security" while at the expanse of others. And that scares me. Sadly I won't be able to visit Belarus and see the rest of my family in the near future, because of this oppressive dictatorship. #freebelarus
I like the guy. Obviously she doesn't want you to hear the other. Belarus doesn't have homeless people like you would see in other western countries, if you want to compare Kiev with minsk. Minsk is more advanced than Kiev, I'm sure the crime is very low in France and the UK even the US. The city is cleaner compared to Kiev. What is wrong for a country to be left alone? It's not like North Korea, hello! If you want to label him the last dictator. Maybe you should do your research of the US putting dictators in power. Learn your history and root cause. I think Belarus is beautiful. It needs some progress yes. But doesn't mean it has to be labeled a negative spotlight.

Sadism and torture are a fictional exaggerated interpretation of events that are spread by Western media. Doesn't it bother you that they only distribute this version?

I live in the us and I want to move here because I don’t believe in the west please tell me how
Oh God, no fentanyl zombies anywhere and so clean. It's a Dream. Stay careful, the West wants to change that.
Brilliant video ❤❤❤❤
Mostly agreed, but "Belarus doesn't have homeless people like you would see in other western countries" is an arguable point.
people are certanly well dressed and look weaithy
Beautiful place
this video was great thanks :) I subscribed:))
Minsk is very clean
I studied law in BGU
I would love to go, but I'm not sure if it's safe being an American.

Would love to visit Belarus far more than I would like to visit the US totalitarianism state.
You sound like a westerner who has not travelled lot. How can you compre the US to a dictatorship like Belarus?
This video feels rather cherry picked. Even the so called interviews were rather curt. Not saying what was shown is not real, but the intentions behind the video feel suspect. More like an ad.
After the first missiles strikes from the Belarus side I suppose that no one will garant the same life as before for Belarusian people.
I can guarantee that nothing has changed.
I want bride from your country and job
I'm Belarusian. Im against our government. But not against country itself.
Hi. Is it safe for a British National to visit at the moment?
@@JohnSmith-ho8upThere are a lot of foreigners in Belarus, including the British. Of course it's safe, people are polite to everyone
OK. What would happen if a British tourist exposed their genitalia at a political demonstration in Minx?
@@JohnSmith-ho8up a couple of days in the department for violating public order, most likely a fine, not very large, and that’s all

Is Belarus in Europe? It’s more like Asia. No?
Its between Poland and Russia so it is def Europe
It’s the last frontier. Civilization is thin here.
Minsk seems a very clean city with a lot of green areas, but the architecture outside the city centre seems a little bit grey and ugly.
Wonderful video love from India I looking seriously belarus girl need dating
politically engaged elf :)
Who is elf?
It's a beautiful city and full of warm compassionate people. I didn't know much about the city or the country until the protests happened. Such a shame about the sadistic beatings and torture of innocent and non-violent people. Hoping to visit when all that ends.
Sadism and torture are a fictional exaggerated interpretation of events that are spread by Western media. Doesn't it bother you that they only distribute this version?
Have you ever heard of a peaceful, bloodless, fair for everyone, sweet revolutions? What happened in our country was another west-organized color revolution, which, luckily, failed. So, a great deal of gratitude for "tortures" to your governments, guys. Don't believe 100% what your media feed you with.
Trust me, most of that is western propaganda. Some countrys and people are majority against "woke" culture
thank you for your support! Belarus will be free for sure!
@@yauhenm.8185 Not being able to vote is just western propaganda?
the library is quite ugly. so much money down the drain.

The North Korea of Europe.
@Вася Васильев🇷🇺 so Belarus is a free and open country with no restrictions on free speech? (Political opponents are locked up and a dictator has been in power for decades)
The one who destroy Minsk is Germany why you lying to people
Very little opertunity in Belarus sadly since one old guy leads country wrong way.
Lol :) Baiden leads USA not Belarus ;))
But my friend lives in Belarus, he told me that it has a very poor economy & not available jobs, no Ocean, no future.
I live here, lived in EU and went back here, tons of jobs, safety and beautiful nature (some people just love to complain and just hate work)

No thanks, I'd much rather go swimming in San Francisco Bay with a cut on my leg.
"The last dicatorship in Europe", really? So, Putin's Orwellian KGB Russia is not a dictatorship?!
If we ignore the soviet/communist symbolism from the past, or a fact that Belarus is still a colony of Russia, it's a typical national-socialist state, at the edge of corporate-socialism.
