The Army's Honor Guard is stationed at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in DC. They have high polished chrome M-14 rifles with bayonets (with loaded magazines at the ready, btw) and they do drills similar to this all day and night in all weather. There's a video of one guy who accidentally got stabbed through the foot, but he continues his ritual, with blood bubbling out of the top and sole of his shoe. They are as serious and hard core as the Royal Guards in London. If you disrupt their ritual, you will get your ass torn up and might get a rifle aimed at you while they're yelling at you at full volume in front of hundreds of other tourists. Watching them in person, surrounded by thousands of graves at Arlington full of American (and some allies) gets you inside and makes you appreciate what those guys did for us, and not just "us" as Americans, but "us" as in everyone in the world.

  • @dhaucoin

Yeah, those players most DEFINITELY should have waited another ten bloody minutes for the drill to end.
But that also points out that laser focus on the Marines, as well- all this shit going on nearby, and not a twitch out of place.
Mind you, this is how ALL Marines are trained- to focus on the job at hand. Protecting the White House, drilling the new recruits, or sorting reports in the Commandant's Office at Marine HQ. No job too small, you give it all your attention.

When I lived in Washington DC back in the day, we would occasionally go see this team and the band perform the Friday evening parade at the “old” Marine Barracks. At least back then it was open to the public and you could just go. It was quite the experience. Some might try to dismiss them as mere “poster boys” but the discipline, dedication, skill, and pride those men exuded was inspirational.

I have a lot of experience with the M1, they're great rifles and balanced well but they are heavy. I've shot one handed with them before - it's not fun.
They're called the silent drill platoon because they're a platoon. Each line is a separate squad. 8 per squad and 4 per fire team. The corporal without a rifle is probably the senior non commissioned officer. The guy with the sword is the commanding officer. There have been injuries but not as many as you'd expect. They practice the movements until they can't get it wrong - most people practice until they get it right.
The bayonets are probably dull. Bayonets are supposed to be dull because a tearing wound is more difficult to treat and takes a longer time to recover then a simple slice. In ww2 a lot of US soldiers did sharpen them - but found that they lost their edge relatively fast.

On the lost or dropped cover moment, it does happen from time to time, especially with a combination of Summer sweat and the violent movements of a spinning rifle. Some things you just can't control for.
For those wondering why he doesn't skitter over and pick it up, or why he doesn't fix it while it slowly slips off his head, this would be considered losing your bearing or a breach of discipline...which a Marine is NOT ALLOWED TO DO! lol
If a Marine screws up during drill, like turning the wrong way during a facing movement, they are instructed to keep discipline and WAIT FOR THE COMMANDING OFFICER'S INSTRUCTIONS to correct themselves. No extra movements, no shifting around. The Marine in error will hear something like, "THE COMMAND WAS LEFT FACE! CORRECT YOURSELF!" from the officer and then act accordingly.
Likewise, the...unfortunate soul who has his cover fall off or even get swatted off his head is not allowed to go chasing after it himself, only to keep his bearing and do no extra movements.
Yeah, I kinda like it when it happens on the field, as it demonstrates something of a testament to how disciplined the Marine in question really is. Hopefully it's planned or just accepted as a thing that can happen and is taken in stride.
A similar thing happened during a performance in front of the Lincoln Memorial. The witnessing Admiral gave a broad smile and a proud nod, seeing the platoon's rifle inspection officer recover and replace the dropped cover(hat) on the Marine's head.
It seems a common enough occurrence and I like seeing it as a trial passed, rather than just a mistake. That being said, if it ain't planned for...I'd hate to be in that guy's shoes, lol.

In high school, I was flag 🚩 and rifle captain in the marching band. I can tell you first hand this is sooooo impressive. It's hard enough to do with music and takes tons of practice, discipline, skill, and patience. This was absolutely stunning and bloody brilliant. ❤ Not comparing 100% but from my experience, marching on a field twirling and throwing wooden rifles and long flags in the air, (sometimes 2 flags) I know the difficulty, and this is on a whole different level.

When I was in the Marine Corps, this was my unit, and one of my close friends stabbed himself in the femoral artery during a Friday night parade. He was unable to catch the rifle when doing one of the movements and was taken off the parade deck by the highest enlisted Officer in the Marine Corps, SGTMAJ. Black. He was rushed to the hospital and stayed there for a few days. If he wasn’t taken off that parade deck, he might have passed out and on the parade deckduring the performance. He told me wasn’t going to leave because he thought he could push through it. This happened before my very eyes. To this day his pants are hung in the hallway of the Barracks along with the shirt of another Marine from the 1980s, who also got stabbed during one of these parades. His nickname was Tech. This happened in 2020.

Not sure if anymore mentioned this. But if you pay close attention. Right before the the rifle flipping/tossing portion the marines sheath there bayonets. They are very skilled and do it seamlessly. Hopefully that makes you feel a bitter better about them not actually cutting each other. They return the bayonets at the end before they March off.

  • @leahmollytheblindcatnordee3586

By the way, if you look closely, the bayonets had been removed from the guns that were thrown between the marines (they were put into holders at their sides.. There is a much better video if you look these guys up. It is done inside with close up action being shown and the sound was super cool. I did read somewhere where the hat being knocked off was a part of the program. I also was not impressed with the football players, it was a problem with time constraints.

The only two things I am aware of that have stopped Football in any way are strikes by players, and the Covid Pandemic. I guess despite the drill, the players have to be ready to immediately start the game, even if it is distracting. Cheers!

What should have happened was players stay off the field til Marines exit AAAND they are still given their normal allotted time to warm up before the 2nd half kicks off. My guess is that the 2nd half of the equation wasnt gonna happen, shame on the NFL as a whole for putting players in that position to either look like jerks or miss their warm up before the game resumes in what could be an important game for either team (don't know when in the season this took place).

I like you, L3WG and I know you are doing a reaction video and that's cool....
But sometimes, when it comes to watching The Silent Drill Platoon.....
Out of respect to them, you watch and don't interrupt! Ater you have watched them, THEN you can go back through the video and react.
If you noticed, the stadium crowd was also silent as well except for small breaks in between.
That is out of pure respect!
And don't worry about what's going on around them....
Focus on them or you will miss something.
This was the rifle inspection performance. The Sargeant inspected two rifles for cleanliness and usability along with the soldiers cleanliness. Even that is a show all its own.
There are other videos of them doing some crazy insane cool things!
Watch them without stopping and you will understand them even more.
Also, you should watch the changing of the guard at The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier.
It is also an inspection during the changing of the guards. And for the soldiers standing guard, there is probably not a more honorable watchstand in the entire military than there is to guard The Tomb! They take that position incredibly serious!
Even of you are just a tourist....YOU DO NOT WANT TO CROSS THEM AND PISS THEM PISS THEM OFF!!!
They will without a doubt.... defend that tomb!
So if you ever go to Washington D.C. and see The Tomb of The Unknown Soldier....
Keep a respectful distance and enjoy!
    CHEERS!

Total disrespect that the players were on field. I agree, they should have turned and chased the players berserker style.

If you haven't done one yet, you need a reaction (or two) for the American Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. If you liked this, you'll enjoy those.

The Royal Guard was also impressive as I watched to honor your Queen. That’s some serious discipline.

So disrespectful of players to be on the field while they perform their routine. They should be in the sidelines until they are done. Smh

It’s mad disrespectful for those players to be out there. I’m sure there was some reason, but it’s super disrespectful.

He dropped his cover and let it just lay on the ground, didn’t miss a beat.👏Having done rifle drill myself I can tell you it takes incredible focus to ignore a mishap like that and continue unflinching. Without your cover (headgear/hat) you stand out from the rest (big no-no) AND now it’s on the ground in the way of the drill. If you gotta step on it, you just do🤷‍♀️
Ps. SO F’ING DISRESPECTFUL of the players and trainers to be out there while the Marines were still drilling.

They have a television schedule to keep, that's why they were taking to field. They ran long because the hat fell off. They would have taken the field just as they were leaving.

If you like military drills, you should REALLY check out the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, especially changing of the guard! Here's a link to a video: ruclips.net/video/vqZ-mkdp1H0/видео.html

Also, look into the military unit that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It's CRAZY the training they go through and the regulations they have to observe. It's considered a high honor to be part of that guard.
