I'm moving to France and now i've seen this, i do not know if i'll take with me the DDJ-SR from Pioneer or buy this one. Can anyone give me an advice? I've learned how to djing live with a CDJ2000 players and then i'd got my DDJ-SR so this one it will be new for me. Pros and cons?
Am very close to purchasing this unit. Will I be able to play this simultaneously with my Maschine Studio to add in extra sounds/layers in addition to everything that can be done with just the S5?
+Apostol Apostolov You can also buy any side midi controller for literally under 100 bucks to add that missing functionality from the s8... so much cheaper.
+Anton Brabant I didnt go into it but yes you can by hitting the browse knob (large left knobs below the screens). You can also sort and preview tracks in a playlist from the controller by using the arrow keys to select the function and moving the loop encoder to adjust.
To use a STEMS track with Traktor, the track must already be in the STEMS file format. You cannot load any MP3 or wave file into a STEMS deck. If you are producing or playing your own music using a DAW you can use this to create your own stems. www.stems-music.com/stem-creator-tool/
+studioviper Kind of. You can route the mic input (pre gain) down one of the channels in Traktor which you could then route to FX. The issue with this is that you are constrained to the gain provided by Traktors decks which isn't enough for a Mic so you would have to use a preamp if you wanted to do it this way. That said we are only using a Traktor Beta so this may change in the official release.
Looking at buying one of these soon. What I am wondering is, can you load any kind of samples onto the stem buttons and basically use them like an MPC?
+viceversaDNB Yes you can. To do this you would need to load up a remix deck as the remix decks allow you to load loops and one shots which can then be triggered with the buttons.
+whatisthis0510 Firstly the S8 has faders on each of the side panels to control Stems and Remix decks volumes. The S8 mixer section can also work fully standalone and has far more inputs (phono/line on each channel, XLR mic input also). The S8 also has midi in and output. The soundcards and most of the other hardware components in each are the same.
+Jacob Bortz That is correct. The S5 does not have the correct inputs for Scratch compatibility. Something like the Kontrol Z2 or one of the dedicated scratch soundcards such as the Audio 6 or 10 is more suited to your needs if you require scratch functionality.
Very good review i just do not see any practical way to use stems in any sort of live djn session, as in a club or party. That is just way too much to do on top of actually mixing songs. Who would actually do this? Now if you maybe making some sort of mixed recorded session then absolutey i could see maybe. Other then tha just am not feeling stems at all. My only critique of this review is you are speaking as if everyone watcing has an s8. And quite a few people did not jump on the s8 bandwagon. What if you have just an s4 or s4 mk2?
+Tayshawn Price thanks for the positive feedback. I think STEMS is a great way to mix and not just in a recorded session. I think of it as a step up from EQ where you can completely remove elements rather then just filtering frequencies. It means your mixes can be smoother and more seamless as you don't have to deal with competing elements during a mix. It also means if a track has a really catchy vocal hook or something that you like but you don't really want to use the rest of the track you can. Of course Stems like anything else needs to be used in a way that actually sounds pleasing, your same general mixing practices apply. If you are a producer you can turn your own tracks into Stems and have more control over them live which i really like.
And to answer your other question, I did mention the S8 quite a lot as the functionality is similar as is the ability to control Stems however this would make a great upgrade for anyone who is looking to step up from the S4/S2 and wont miss the jogwheels.
+CMI HiTech No i totally agree with what you are saying i was just thinking about using it in a real world situation if that makes sense. I definitely was not trying to say i thought stems themselves is a bad idea. But like the remix sets before them and i had a f1 i just honestly never used them in any real world situations. If i djd a club/ house party. When i was at home messing around or recording a mix yes. I definitely think it would be much more practical like you said if you produced.
+CMI HiTech I actually think using stems with the s8 would be more practical just because of the seperate faders imo. But that price point is just too much for me. Trust me i wish i could afford an s8. And btw thanks for the replies!!
+Tayshawn Price I used stems this weekend in a club scenario, and it went rather well. I did use them on an S8 however. Stems are great for never playing the same show twice, if you handpick them carefully you can find a lot of inspirational tracks, and there's not TOO much work involved with them. As I'm assuming a lot of the people using them are Traktor experienced DJs, or producers, it's possible that you may of not built the muscle memory, or personal experience to want to micromanage to this degree.
this is probaly a very stupid question, but a friend of mine is selling one like this so i just wanted to check out and see what you can do with this thing...so can you like MAKE your own songs? like sing and make a beat and stuff with this? and another very stupid question...lol...do you plug it in a pc to use it xD.... and one more, can you plug in a mic? i have the at2020.
+sotnos90 the S5 is a dj mixer/controller so its not really purpose built to create songs from scratch, but instead to mix/remix existing songs. That said you can download STEMS files / Remix packs for Traktor which let you have more control over individual elements of a song. It does have a mic input, however it does not provide phantom power so dynamic mics only. And yes you do need a PC or a Mac to use it.
+sotnos90 This is also for Traktor, a DJ software and not production software. I would look into something like FL studio/Ableton Live/ any DAW production software for creating your own music.
for some reason i feel this makes it so complicated to dj... it makes it so techy and suitable for nerds... needs so much of concentration... i guess when m hammered i doubt i would wanna play with this... ahaha
If you're in it for $800, then just spring for the extra $200 and get the S8. Once you get over $500 for a controller you're not splitting hairs over $200.
Pros and cons?
adjusting the BPM can you show us your next video how easy or accurate it is please thanks bro
Really useful video, thanks!
Am very close to purchasing this unit. Will I be able to play this simultaneously with my Maschine Studio to add in extra sounds/layers in addition to everything that can be done with just the S5?
rotary knobs to control the stems would have been nice. seems like a bit of a faf
Cool! Thanks! The biggest question probably for most people is ... how do you control volume for each stems channel and you nailed it :)
+Apostol Apostolov Buy an s8 :D it got volume faders for stems
+Apostol Apostolov You can doit on S5 too. Just use the rotary knobs after selec the volume option in the screen.
+Apostol Apostolov You can also buy any side midi controller for literally under 100 bucks to add that missing functionality from the s8... so much cheaper.
Well I got the s8 and I am very happy with it ;) Additional inputs with traktor kontrol capabilities is an added bonus ;)
Apostol Apostolov Definitely a great controller! Enjoy it.. Can't wait for my s5... Ordering in a week after my next gig :)
sorry same length as a Kontrol f1 or x1 how do they sit side by side?
that was quick! good review.
can you browse and load tracks to decks on the screen?
+Anton Brabant I didnt go into it but yes you can by hitting the browse knob (large left knobs below the screens). You can also sort and preview tracks in a playlist from the controller by using the arrow keys to select the function and moving the loop encoder to adjust.
Can u use Stems mode for any track or those are special tracks in use?
Hi, Any Track
To use a STEMS track with Traktor, the track must already be in the STEMS file format. You cannot load any MP3 or wave file into a STEMS deck. If you are producing or playing your own music using a DAW you can use this to create your own stems.

Hello I've got s5 today and I have a problem I can not install the software on s5 so that is does not recognize the computer I want to help
I had the same problem. You will need a laptop with at least an i7 processor and about 8 gig of ram, anything less and it will not work.
Although Traktor will run very well on these specs all that is required to run Traktor/S5 is an Intel Core i5, 4 GB RAM
can you apply traktor effects to the mic input?
+studioviper Kind of. You can route the mic input (pre gain) down one of the channels in Traktor which you could then route to FX. The issue with this is that you are constrained to the gain provided by Traktors decks which isn't enough for a Mic so you would have to use a preamp if you wanted to do it this way. Is this controller capable of being stand-alone? (except for maybe a power brick of course)
The S5 cannot be used as a standalone mixer. If you are needing that functionality you should look at the Kontrol S8
Beside d size,whats the difference btween s8 n s5?
+whatisthis0510 Firstly the S8 has faders on each of the side panels to control Stems and Remix decks volumes. The S8 mixer section can also work fully standalone and has far more inputs (phono/line on each channel, XLR mic input also). The S8 also has midi in and output. The soundcards and most of the other hardware components in each are the same.
So is there no way to use skratch pro and dvs for the s5?
+Jacob Bortz You can if you buy a seperate scratch ready traktor sound card.
As in an audio 6 or 10? Idk much about sound cards. Thanks for the reply btw...
+Jacob Bortz That is correct. The S5 does not have the correct inputs for Scratch compatibility. Something like the Kontrol Z2 or one of the dedicated scratch soundcards such as the Audio 6 or 10 is more suited to your needs if you require scratch functionality.
Who are you? And how did you get this up so quickly?
+nathan Brady we are third stage guild navigators
Does the s5 come with the Traktor 2 program?
Hi Caleb, The Traktor S5 hardware controller comes with:
TRAKTOR PRO 2 software with Stem & Remix Decks
USB cable
Power supply
Does the S5 have any control over the loop recorder?
+Corey Steward No it doesnt. However you could switch it into midi mode (shift + back) and map the controls for the loop recorder
is this the same size as an 1! or x1? in length
+unknown wanderer think its a little smaller..

do mp3 files work?
you've probably found out by now, but it does support mp3 files.
They could have at least added midi out
Can i have one please
il sell you 1 brand new still in box with Traktor pro software £400
dude why did you upload this in potato quality?
for some reason i feel this makes it so complicated to dj... it makes it so techy and suitable for nerds... needs so much of concentration... i guess when m hammered i doubt i would wanna play with this... ahaha
without faders its not a real stem controller. its a shity workflow if you have to turn a nob 20 times until the volume is low enough.
If you're in it for $800, then just spring for the extra $200 and get the S8. Once you get over $500 for a controller you're not splitting hairs over $200.
