This Week in Volcanoes; Mount Pinatubo Erupts, A Future Eruption Near Reykjavik

  • Right now, there are 53 volcanoes actively erupting on the planet. This week, Mount Pinatubo unexpectedly erupted, sending a plume of material 14,300 meters or 44,000 feet into the atmosphere. Meanwhile in Iceland, uplift has been ongoing around the Geldingadalir volcano, suggesting that more similarly sized eruptions are likely in the future. On the island of Iwo Jima in Japan, a series of small phreatic eruptions occurred. Finally, in Indonesia, a new submarine vent emerged at the Iliwerung volcano. This video will discuss these volcano related news stories, as told and analyzed by a volcanologist.

    You might be wondering I did not include the eruption of Semeru or the ongoing glacial flood from Grimsvotn. Simply put, the eruption of Semeru was cut for time (and was covered yesterday in an entire update video) while I did not want to cover Grimsvotn two weeks in a row. Speaking of Grimsvotn, its overlying glacier has now sunk by 47 meters, and the peak intensity of the glacial flood (expected to be ~2,300 m^3/second) is ongoing.

      well its at 74.06 and the tremor charts calming down so maybe it wont go this time? I dont think there have been any earthquakes under there larger than a 1. somethiing so maybe Askja? Going to ck the earthquake charts for Iceland to see if theres been more EQ activity during the night. They ahve 2 live cams at Grimsvotn but all you can see is snow. I think it's supposed to be showing the flood but all it shows is white.

      Our Icelandic volcano enthusiasts will be frowning and saying, " did he just call our Reykjanes, Rek - jains"?
      Just a heads up, it's pronounced Rake - yan - ehs. And Grimsvotn has a history of erupting after meltwater drainage.

      Since 1800 volcanic eruptions are most definitely not on the rise. We just have active monitoring of areas now which are uninhabited or extremely remote (such as Mount Erebus in Antarctica).
      Theoretically speaking, falling sea levels and melting of glacial ice sheets can trigger volcanic eruptions but I have yet to see a long term trend that goes beyond the margin of error. Well, except for the period around the younger dryas. Volcanic eruptions definitely increased around that time

    Geology hub question I hope you can answer. In Pennsylvania which I know hasn't been active in hundreds of millions of years. There are a few places at the bottom of cliff faces near Easter central state. In the Appalachians that have large hexagonal blocks that stick out of the bottom of where landslide or erosion have removed much of the surface material. Most I've seen was like 40 of them sticking out of the bottom of a several hundred foot hill near a trail head. Could these be remnants of some extremely old eruptions hundreds of millions of years ago that have been totally covered and mostly eroded by extreme time

    • @michaeldeierhoi4096
      @michaeldeierhoi4096 2 года назад

      What's the point? This Phreatic eruption would not be a threat to anyone. Plus there are numerous complications to draining the lake. For one thing the lake is highly acidic because of the gases continually released by the volcanic. So any piping used to drain the lake would be damaged by the acidic waters.
      Next, because of the risk of such an eruption -which doesn't threaten anyone- why put someone at risk to go set up a drainage system??
      And of course the lake would begin to refill every time it rains and because it is a tropical climate it rains a lot there.
      Next time you think a simplistic idea would resolve a perceived problem think again!!

    It was prudent La Palma evacuated 7000 people from areas of lava flow, and dangerous air quality. I continue to have concerns for remaining animals and citizens..Many of whom were advised to stay indoors in accordance with poor air quality. The La Palma airport briefly shut down due to air toxicity, and the unstable ocean floor near the island is being monitored. Scientists have advised tourists to visit the island, but common sense and intuition scream:
    "Danger Will Robinson"
    When volcanic liquid, lava, erupts from the earth and flows down into the drastically colder ocean seawater, it creates a chemical reaction that produces an explosion of steam, sending bright white toxic plume clouds into the air.
    These white plumes are Laze, or ‘lava haze’, and they contain a mixture of condensed seawater steam, hydrochloric acid gas, and tiny shards of volcanic glass. These extremely acidic plumes can be blown downwind, and as such, their toxic effects can reach far beyond their originating points.

    Just imagine what these are doing to our ecosystem. La Palma alone has been estimated to be emitting 1/60th of the worlds YEARLY CO2 alone. And there are four other active volcanos now. Mother nature can be cruel and unpredictable.
