Incredible song, hands down my favorite ELO song, out of the blue is a masterpiece, Discovery, a new world record, and Time. Classics full of treasured songs. Jeff Lynne's music is very special to me and hes a stellar guy!
@@debbiechang5781 "Do Ya" wasn't originally written for ELO, Jeff wrote it in 1971 when he was in The Move, their version was released in April of 1972 along with Roy Wood's "Ella James" on the 'B' side of The Move's final maxi single "California Man". The Move's version of "Do Ya" is a lot rawer and less polished with lots of cow bell played by Bev Bevan, by the time The Move released "Do Ya" they were reduced to a trio of Wood, Lynne and Bevan. If you haven't heard "Do Ya" by The Move, give it a listen.
Hey Harri, thanks to Kosmo for the request. When I first heard ELO it was Roll Over Beethoven. I thought as the years went by John Lennon would never be dead as long as Jeff was making music. Then Out Of The Blue came out. I realized that Jeff has a voice that you'll hear once in a lifetime, absolute pleasure.
_Sweet Is The Night_ is the first song of the last side (side 4) of Out Of The Blue. (And there's no "how" in the title or the chorus, you know.) Side 3 is _Concerto For A Rainy Day_, of course. You may remember that the outro of this concerto (the last instrumental section of _Mr Blue Sky_, after the last lines speaking of "Mr. Night") ends with the vocoder voicing "please turn me over". That this following song is about the night can't be a coincidence, and for that reason I regard all four sides of he album as one complete story. As I interpret this song, it is about how the night goes on, after the day the sky was blue, and the protagonist (re)found his girl. They've agreed to meet again in the evening, go somewhere for dinner, and then "watch a nature movie about whales or something..." ;-)
My dad showed me ELO at 16 years old. I could remember hearing the rhythm in my head when I was young child on his radio. I'm now 21 soon to be 22 and are the best I've ever heard. Glad you like them
Great review. Interesting observation re the Dylan flavorings. The sadness & longing in Kelly G’s voice when he sings "And the sun that shines paints a trace of sadness in your eyes that cry wishin and hopin ...

One of my favorite tracks from Out of The Blue album Kelly Groucutt the bassist of the group has voce similar to Jeff's but slightly higher was integral to the success of the group he and Jeff made such a vocal team with their harmonies not to mention he was a stellar bassist and I always considered Kelly the heart of ELO Check out the song Poker off the Face The Music album Kelly sings lead on that Just remember Harri that all those great songs like Telephone Line , Strange Magic and Evil Woman was not all Jeff but also his partner in crime the late great (sadly Kelly past away in 2009) Kelly Groucutt I know I'm not a patron but I would like to request a song Wild West Hero i know you will love it Keep up the good work my friend (you too Cosmos) from THE BIGGEST ELO FAN and Harri fan
No problem, R Cherry. While I can't help you with, "Wild West Hero", I will be sponsoring, "Poker", and at least one other track with Kelly on lead vocals, so stay tuned! Having said that, I do have to disagree with your assertion that Kelly was, "the heart of ELO". He was a good bassist, and had an excellent voice, but let's not forget that Jeff wrote and produced every single original ELO song, playing lead guitar and providing virtually all of the lead vocals. Jeff was the brains, the soul, and the heart of ELO. But I'll tell ya what, I don't want to diminish Kelly's wonderful contribution to ELO's sound...maybe he was the band's pancreas...or gall bladder. How 'bout that? ;)
@@Cosmo-Kramer We can agree to disagree my friend but I will leave with this from the time that Kelly arrived before the start of the Eldorado tour in 1974 too the time he was fired during the making of the Secret Messages album in 1983 the has never sounded the same I think he had a big hand in my Jeff a better singer and vocal arranger just compare Jeff's vocals before the Face The Music album the first one he performed on but I guess I will have to set for Kelly being too the kidney of the group Ha Ha I guess I consider you Harri and me as ELO kindred spirits and I greatly appreciate you both from THE BIGGEST ELO FAN and definitely Cosmos Kramer fan
Electric Light Orchestra - my favorite band of all time! Sweet is the Night is a great song, I also highly recommend "Can't Get It Out My Head" from their Eldorado concept album.
I submitted, "Can't Get It Out of My Head", a few weeks ago but Harri said it was blocked. He's appealed it so we should know in a week or so if we won the appeal. Either way, I'll be sponsoring a few other tracks from that great album over the next couple months.
Sublime Harri. Jeff and Kelly's vocals are wonderful as they to and fro. Yes, Jeff could have been knowingly in Bob Dylan mode but to me his voice is setting and maintaining the tone, the underlying sentiment of the song Thank you for reacting to another E.L.O. masterpiece. 👍😊
Harri, another excellent reaction! You are absolutely correct, Jeff wrote this song with Bob Dylan in mind. Not just his voice, but I'm sure you noticed the phrasing was very Dylan-esque. Not the words, per se, but the structure of the phrasing, and the cadence with which Jeff delivered the lines, along with Jeff's "Dylan" voice. Jeff could at times sound like Lennon, Harrison, McCartney, Orbison, and yes, in this track and one other I can think of, Dylan. As for Kelly, he does have an excellent voice, and I've got at least two more songs on my list that feature Kelly either on lead vocals or co-lead vocals. I'll be sure to let you know in the Intro to those songs, since as you said, Jeff has such a wide-ranging voice it's not especially easy to tell them apart. And as for your take on the song and its appeal, yes, it is a very catchy number, so much so that I discover it running through my head even when I've not listened to the song in over a week. Thanks again for all you do, and rock on! :D
Listing a top 10 elo songs is like a full time job, it can change every few weeks or months or even hours, depending on what mood you are in. I’ve probably done it hundreds of times over the years and rarely end up with the same list. Maybe a top 30 songs, just the order they are in changes each time..!
@cosmo kramer Love this song. I have requested Harri do Standin In The Rain for this month. This was ELO's opening song during the 1978 Out Of The Blue Tour. It was my very first concert when I was 13. To this day, I have not seen another concert that can top it. For that time and era, it was amazing.

As a early teenager listening to this song way back when OOTB was released, I never really paid attention to the vocal style (comparison to Dylan) or lyrics...I just liked it the way you described it...as being sweet sounding and catchy.
