Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Department of Family Medicine at University of Iowa Health Care as we explore the story of its founding father, Robert Rakel, MD. This documentary highlights the journey of family medicine as a specialty, from being considered unworthy of prestige to becoming an integral part of health care. With the American Medical Association's approval of family medicine as a specialty in 1969, Rakel led the establishment of a family practice department at Iowa in 1971. Through his leadership, the department welcomed its first residency class and opened two model offices.
