Thanks for this review Allen. Absolutely brilliant. Totally agree with others saying it's the best guitar review they've seen on RUclips. I bought the Wildkat antique natural some years back and I absolutely love it but haven't spent much time playing it. Your review showed me for the first time what the guitar's potential is (and actually, to be honest, how to use the controls and the Bigsby properly) and it's amazing versatility. So I know I made the right purchase choice. And now, after watching your video, I also have a much better idea of how to play it and what I can get out of it. Thank you (BTW - I've subscribed to your channel now) .

Wires go from pups to switch to two volume pots and one tone control pot to master switch to signal out. I removed 4’ of wires by going from pups to switch to one volume & one tone… wires were killing me highs… I installed a Gotoh bridge and Hipshot staggered locking tuners. Mine is a Studio model, no Bigsby. With the upgrades, she is truly a pro studio guitar.
Ah tuning... while the Bigsby does add it's share of complexity to the mix, basic tuning skills apply even more here... STRETCH those strings, wham that whammy bar, tune, and stretch again... repeat this until all the notes stay in tune after a full stroke on the whammy bar... even if it does go out of tune, a quick dive bomb sets things right again... also, perhaps firstly, make sure your nut is cut and lubed properly... this is from experience, as I own two Wildkats, the White Royale, as shown, and the Antique Natural, which I've installed a roller bridge on... some recommend skipping over the large roller on the Bigsby, and just running the strings straight over the top... I've tried this, and find that it works ok, but a heavy strumming hand can knock the strings out of the saddles, so take care if you decide to go that route... currently, I have both strung with Ernie Ball .10's, running under the bar, and am experiencing few issues, when I tune in the manner I described... oh, and one more word on stringing the guitar... while some people love putting multiple wraps of string around the post, I prefer less, as in barely one time around on the wound strings, and maybe two winds on the unwound strings... WHY, do you ask? I believe it significantly affects tuning stability, since there is less string to stretch to playing tension, it will stay in tune better... I laugh when I read that the first thing that so many people claim to do is change the 'crappy' tuners on inexpensive guitars, when it is rarely the tuners (proper technique eliminates most tuner issues), but much more likely a nut issue... it is a much cheaper fix to change a nut than a set of tuners...
Good Video & Review of the Epiphone Wildkat Royale - Thanks, Allen ! Thinking about buying one for my 10 year old grandson. He's always looking at my 1992 Gretsch G7594T White Falcon, You make the Wildkat sound good.!!
Would love to hear your thoughts on a Godin 5th ave kingpin it’s marketed as a jazz guitar but I have been looking for a video of someone rocking out on one…no can do, I just think they look pretty cool

What if i want to be a space alien to get a vibrato? Also, as a WildKat owner, if you want this guitar, find a cheap used one for under $299. With the money you saved, change the nut to a Tusk XL and swap out the wiring to a high quality setup. 920D sells a kit from between $50 to $60. If the p90s sound too dark for your style, there are tons of dog-ear p90s you can use and swap out. i personally like the chill and creamy tone for playing bossanova, jazz, and I turn the fuzz and reverb pedals and brightness for shoegaze. FYI kiddos, be yourself, not what everyone else wants or thinks you should be.
Excellent video Allen! One of best I've seen on 'tube (certainly where the "Kat" is concerned!) Always felt she's been "underated" & largely ignored by guitar "know it alls." She's much more versatile than some might think. I agree she does her best for 'ya if "manhandled" a bit. (Like a good lover I 'spose.) I'm happy owner of a "Natural" finish Kat w/Bigsby. Bought new in '14. Granted, so-so import electronics, but easily upgraded! Serious "weak" spot is her P90s are "overwound" w/cheap wiring. Upgrades included P90s were torn down & rebuilt to '50s specs. She REALLY came alive! A good guitar that's now a Great one! Also has locking Grovers & Wilkinson "roller" in place of stock "tuney" bridge. They fit right in w/no mods needed! Kat continues to be a top seller for Epi (& for good reason!) Sadly there's no longer a listing for these axes on official Epi site (discontinued?) Only found NewGen "Uptown Kat" models. They feature wire "trapiese" tailpiece & mini HBs instead of P90s.

Bravo 👏 MATE ! That's how you do a REVIEW for bigsby! Just got mine and never played b4. I have a heart full of love and mind thats focused with tunnel vision. I'm comin for you guitar Gods! 🎸
Looking to buy my first guitar, how beginner friendly is this? Love the sound and look, cost not an issue. This would be my ideal guitar to own but a little worried it may be a little too complicated with its additional components compared to a starter guitar.
It does seem to have a lot of odd extras on it. You could still get by on it once you figure out all of the knobs, or just turn them all all the way up so everything is on. The whammy bar is really easy to use or ignore. I usually go for tuning stability on beginner guitars as a recommendation and ease of playing. This one loses some points due to tuning stability issues from the whammy bar style but if you know you like this style and sound then it would be fine for a beginner. Thank you for the comment and question!
Great demo Allen, very enjoyable showing what this guitar can do, I have a few guitars one is an Epiphone Gary Clake Jr Ltd signature Casino it has USA P90s and sounds fantastic and I subscribed, looking forward to more of this

It'll take me eternity to learn those fast runs, damnit. I was eyeing these used for a while now. Still resisting GAS attack, but for how long I don't know.
Yeah...I did it, I am a weak man, I've got the ESP LTD EC-256P, yes the P90 model and it is heaven. Sounds like noting I have already and the When My Train Pulls In never sounded better than with his axe.

O.K., YOU WHET MY SPPETITE for one of these! HONKY! WONKY! BEATY! BONKY! You lay the Lumber on this thing like a Canadian Lumberjack! I'm goin' out to buy one of these puppies!
I like that this has cleaner sounding notes. They have a more pure sine wave to them. Strats seem to be more buzzy in nature. The strat will have more reactive whammy bar though. This thing takes a lot of motion to generate a small amount of pitch modulation. (That could be good depending on the player)
Hey Allen, first of all, great video! and as other people said, is the first review in wich I see this guitar is played this way! I would really appreciate if you could give me your opinion and preferences, regarding Epiphon ES-335 PRO v/s Epiphone Wildkat. Thanks and regards from Chile!

@@AllenVanWert i really want this guitar but the semi hollow makes it kind of muddy and more bass? How would you compare this sound to a strat or tele? those for sure have a more lead guitar sound with brighter sounds right? Sorry for the probably wrong analysis, trying to buy my first electric but want it to be versatile which I know this guitar might not be as much as a tele. But does it really matter because you can change the sound with pedals and amps anyway right?
@@narcssius I would go with a Tele for a first electric guitar because you can play almost anything on it that doesn't need a whammy bar. I played on a Tele through most of my early stages on guitar. I still use it for lessons

I've tried this, and find that it works ok, but a heavy strumming hand can knock the strings out of the saddles, so take care if you decide to go that route... currently, I have both strung with Ernie Ball .10's, running under the bar, and am experiencing few issues, when I tune in the manner I described... oh, and one more word on stringing the guitar... while some people love putting multiple wraps of string around the post, I prefer less, as in barely one time around on the wound strings, and maybe two winds on the unwould strings... WHY, do you ask? I believe it significantly affects tuning stablility, since there is less string to stretch to playing tension, it will stay in tune better... I laugh when I read that the first thing that so many people claim to do is change the 'crappy' tuners on inexpensive guitars, when it is rarely the tuner (proper technique eliminates most tuner issues), but much more likely a nut issue... a much cheaper fix to change a nut than a set of tuners...

Amazing. I want a guitar with P90, but I was in doubt. Your video convinced me to buy a Wildkat
Awesome! Have fun with it.
Tone all the way off sounds great on that neck pickup. Great review!
Thanks so much for your support!
@@AllenVanWert Sub'd!
This is a brilliant video. Very informative and you have the chops to be able to showcase the guitar in many contexts. Great job!

Awesome!
You are turning out some quality videos!
Well. There's one of these at a local pawn shop and watching your video it looks like ima have to go pick her up.
Love the ZZ top
Great Review !!! Thank You!!
You're welcome!
Great demo Allen, very enjoyable showing what this guitar can do, I have a few guitars one is an Epiphone Gary Clake Jr Ltd signature Casino it has USA P90s and sounds fantastic and I subscribed, looking forward to more of this

Any reason this guitar should be chosen over a Gretsch Streamliner Jr?
Haven't tried it so not sure
Price?
It'll take me eternity to learn those fast runs, damnit. I was eyeing these used for a while now. Still resisting GAS attack, but for how long I don't know.
Yeah...I did it, I am a weak man, I've got the ESP LTD EC-256P, yes the P90 model and it is heaven. Sounds like noting I have already and the When My Train Pulls In never sounded better than with his axe.
Brilliant guitar and playing! What kind of reverb do you use and with what settings?
Thanks! I was using a kemper for this video I think. I might've been using it's tape or spring reverb here.
Needs large flatwound strings, those tiny thin girly roundwound is quiet b rubber band sound
Great player!
Good review, nice playing. Thanks.
Bad ass demo man 🤘🏼 I love the earnest thoughts and the guitar sounds baaad.. I already own one(without the trem) but it’s cool to see someone wailing on one

10 Points gracias
Your the man great playing
just sold my swingster. found it to big for my short arse as i play 99.9% sitting. I was going to purchase a dot or es339. Size wise how does the wildcat compare to the swingster.
Definitely interested in more of your videos Sir. The "Kat" is a semi-hollow & I've never had any "feedback" issues. Curious of the amp/pedals(?) you were using. Yes, I think 50ft wire claims are an urban "myth."

Great review! I've been looking at the yellow version of this guitar for a while. I knew I wanted it but kept holding off. A drop in price (blemished) made me perk up, then your review pushed me over the edge and I just bought it. I didn't get a chance to try it out but know I can resell it if I end up not liking it. The price was just too good to pass up. Subscribed to your channel.

I think this is a fantastic guitar!
Your amp setup seems to have unending tones. If you don't mind my asking what do you use? Thanks!
It is a Kemper
Very nice guitar thanks for your video.🎼🎶🎸🇬🇧👍
You're welcome, thank you for your support!
So is this a short scale guitar?
O.K., YOU WHET MY SPPETITE for one of these! HONKY! WONKY! BEATY! BONKY! You lay the Lumber on this thing like a Canadian Lumberjack! I'm goin' out to buy one of these puppies!
Can't decide between this or a strat for around the same price range. I am drawn to the wildkat for some reason.
I like that this has cleaner sounding notes. They have a more pure sine wave to them. Strats seem to be more buzzy in nature. The strat will have more reactive whammy bar though. This thing takes a lot of motion to generate a small amount of pitch modulation. (That could be good depending on the player)
Do you think I could pull off a Leslie West tone with this? I am seriously considering it.
Not sure of their sound but worth trying
I just picked one of these up and I’m finding the overall tone to be very dull and muted. How can I brighten it up?
It could be in the pick you are using or how hard you are picking. You can also put an eq before the amp to boost treble.
What a brilliant review. I may well have to buy one! 😜
Thanks for watching Rodrigo, I haven't gotten to play the ES-335 yet but I think Eric Johnson loves it so I would want to try that one for sure!
@@AllenVanWert Thanks for your answer✌🏻
awesome channel man
Thank you!!!
Hi, did anyone of the owners of this guitar find it neck heavy, please ? I'm going to buy one but this problem is making me to reconsider the purchase
Yep, that's P90's for ya! It's on the list!
Great playing around 12:30 ☝ sings like Alvin Lee
Thanks!
That 50ft of cable is probably from the coils on the pickups
Keagan Jans was thinking same but thats every electric guitar then
mmm that digital tone
How do you control the p-90 buzz on this guitar? I have this same guitar, and when I plug it into my Fender amp, the buzz is very loud.
Paul Todd a noise gate and or less gain can help. Also buzz could be your power causing noise orpickups close to electronics/radio signsls
I Bought a Wildcat Gold IMPERIAL!! IT SUCKED WEAK PU! I REDID THE FRETS & NECK GROVER IMPERIAL KNOBS UTTERLY GORGEOUS. I PUT THE BRIDGE P 90 IN THE NECK ADDED A Demarzio super brdg added mini 3wy
I want it now!
What's the difference between the limited edition and standard edition one?
Honestly no idea. Sorry about this
@@AllenVanWert thanks for the reply
Any feedback issues when playing classic rock?
Nothing noticed
Only review on this guitar worth a crap
Awesome review, bought one off of this review
I want one so bad 😭
Anybody with a problem with this guitar...has a problem with all GUITARS...
That is absurd… they are all different.
I love how Gibson lets Epiphone still be themselves.
The ankle comment made me laugh. You got a like and subscribe.
