- Beautiful Dirleton Village & Dirleton Castle, lie around two miles west of North Berwick in East Lothian and are about a 30 to 40 minute drive from Edinburgh city centre.
As well as a lovely church, Dirleton is home to one of Scotlands best castles, Dirleton Castle, which dates back almost 800 years to the late 1200's. The castle belonged to three different families over the centuries, the de Vauxs, the Haliburtons and the Ruthvens. Each family altered and extended the castle to their own tastes and needs, until it was finally abandoned after Oliver Cromwell's soldiers damage it beyond repair in the 1650's. The derelict castle was purchased by the Nisbet family in 1663, who built and maintained the castle grounds as a beautiful pleasure garden. In 1923 the castle was bought by the state and is now cared and looked after by Historic Scotland. The castle gardens are famous for having the longest herbaceous border in the world. Dirleton castle is a big favourite with families and one of Scotland's best kept secrets.
I can wholeheartedly recommend combining a visit to Dirleton Castle with Yellowcraigs Beach which is just a few minutes away by car. If you have time, it's also worth a visit to North Berwick itself, which has lots of great shops, cafes and restaurants, not to mention another spectacular beach.

I grew up in North Berwick. My Sister was married in Dirleton Kirk and both my parents funeral services were held there.
I went school with Keith Stewart, whose family used to own the "The Castle Hotel" across the road, and whose home was v.nr the actual castle. We used to cycle out to Dirleton as kids to play in the Castle grounds, pretending we were fighting of the hated English Invaders! Lol!.............Thanks for this video, it has brought back many great memories.........and a few tears..........Thank you.

Hi Craig, thanks for commenting and I'm so glad the video has brought back such good memories for you - that means a lot to me, as it makes all the effort to make them worthwhile. I do hope you're keeping safe and well where you are. It's been a long hard slog here in Scotland, but the vaccination programme is going really well and there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel for a more normal life come early summer. It's going to be such a joy to be able to revisit the places I love and start discovering new one's. Thanks again and warmest best wishes, David
@@DavidWheaterScotland You're welcome David, it really is my pleasure. Hoping to make it up to NB. soon. Please keep up the good work it means a lot to us Exiles! KtF Brother!
@@oldmanwillyboy2786 I'll certainly try, have a lovely weekend, all the best, David
I absolutely love Dirleton Castle and can thoroughly recommend combining it with a visit to Yellowcraigs Beach and the lovely town of North Berwick itself. There's loads to do in East Lothian, which has some of the best beaches in the country. If you've got any questions about visiting this beautful part of the world don't hesitate to ask. The next Life in Scotland video will be posted on the 1st of February. Don't forget to subscribe if you want to be notified of all our new videos :-)
Beautiful. From here on the west coast, I always see the east coast like Alice Through the Looking Glass. Strange, but familiar. Well done!
Thanks very much Joyce. I really enjoyed my visit to Dirleton Castle. It's very picturesque and full of interesting nooks & crannies. I'm hoping I can get back to East Lothian soon. Thanks again, best wishes, David
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Peter, glad you liked it. All the best, David
Beautiful video David. Have often visited Dirleton Castle. That and Tantallon are my favourite castles. Often lunched at the Open Arms Hotel across the road. 🙋♂️
Thanks Mike, they're both great castles and I always enjoy visiting. I really hope it won't be long until we can go back. Hope you're having a good week, all the best, David
Thank you for this beautiful in depth video. My ancestors built Dirleton, so I dream of seeing it one day. I'm in the US, so who knows... but this video was as close to in-person as it gets!
Hi Gingy, so glad you enjoyed it. It’s a really wonderful castle to explore and that’s amazing you’re related to it. Really hope you can visit one day and discover it in person. Thanks so much for watching and have a lovely week. All the best, David 🙂
@@DavidWheaterScotland Thanks again, and have a great week, as well!
