Thanks…this helped me track down a forgotten wifi client by probe requests…I used a plain old macbook booted off kali linux usb…followed your steps except I tracked by rssi in probe requests vs ap beacons…no fancy directional antenna required :)

As long as their wifi was on unless it is a Samsung. A Samsung will attempt to pass data packets even with the wifi off. If the lost hiker is carrying an IPhone, and their phone isn't probing (some don't), you won't get anything. If you know the SSID of their home WAP you could use what Kody did in the video and transmit as something you know that phone connects to. I'm more than positive that would work.
excellent vid! It occurs to me that if you use a hackrf or a sdr dongle in place of the wifi you could track down rogue vhf or uhf signals interfering with a repeater. It also seems logical that you could use this to align your HF Yagi antenna for optimal reception. Do you have any have any suggestions on implementing these methods? will wireshark work in this manner?

If its connected to the internet/intranet, probably not. If its not connected to any network, maybe. Encrypted drive(s), strong password(s), a physically secured environment, and common sense is about the best you can do.

Would you be able to locate any wifi device such as a cell phone? Say with a yaggi , looking for a lost hiker in the forest?

If the lost hiker is carrying an IPhone, and their phone isn't probing (some don't), you won't get anything.
