I am a witness of those events of 1969-1971 as a University student in Dhaka, East Pakistan. Sheikh Mujibar Rahman gave all possible options to Mr. Zulfiqer Ali Bhutto to solve this problem (unrest in East Pakistan) so that both East Pakistan and West Pakistan can remain together. However, Mr. Bhutto never agreed to join and/or convene to the National Assembly after the election. And Mr. Bhutto never agreed that Sk. Mujibar Rahman can be the Prime Minister of Pakistan even though he (Sk. Mujib) won the majority votes of Pakistanis. Instead Mr. Bhutto summoned and/or acted with General Yahya Khan to suppress the unrest in East Pakistan by deploying Pakistani military solders on the streets of Dhaka, East Pakistan on March 25, 1971. Army started rolling over streets of Dhaka with Tanks etc. and started killing whoever they found on the streets of Dhaka. A nations' own military started to kill their own civilian members. Unheard of a country's own military killing their own members of the civil society! I wish all Pakistanis well.
Jini 80. I am from the south Indian state Kerala. I was 1st year BA student when the civil war started in East Pakistan. You are absolutely right. The Prime minister ship was the democratic right of Sheikh Mujib Rahman as he got absolute majority in the general election of 1970. But the Bureaucracy and the Establishment of Pakistan suspected Sheik mujib Rahman bcoz he was the prime accused in the Agartala conspiracy case which was later with drawn due to political pressure. Perhaps this may be one of the reasons why Mujib was denied the prime minister ship though the then Pak president General Agha Mohammed Yahya Khan had announced that the future Prime minister would be from East Pakistan. Further the 6 point program of Sheikh Mujib in the final DNA was the secession of eastern wing from Pakistan. When Mujib Rahman was denied to excercise his democratic right a section of Awami league wanted separation and this resulted in the civil war. Pak defence forces unleashed their attack on the civilian population in the name of preserving the integrity and unity of Pakistan. Devilish brutalities were committed by the Pak defence forces against their own people in East Pakistan. However similar ferocious atrocities were also committed by the so called Mukhti bahini secessionist hooligans against the West Pakistani people and their families residing there at that time and against the Urdu speaking Biharis and against the Bengalis who were in favour of the unity and territorial integrity of Pakistan. The civil war in course of time turned into an Indo Pak war in which Pakistan was utterly defeated on both fronts and its eastern wing seperated. The seceeded east Bengal became another country known as Bangladesh. If there was No India Pak war in 1971 there would never be any Bangladesh at all. Now even if the entire population of Bangladesh and Pakistan desire reunification it will be absolutely impossible.

Brothers, Biggest problem was West Pakistan never wanted East Pakistan to raise their heads, rather be a subservient state. Hence the disparities & unequal treatment in all sectors & sharing.
