- You got yourself a hammock and now you are thinking about taking it camping. Or you even on a backpacking trip. Or you maybe thinking about getting a new tarp. Because the one you have is not quite working so well. And you are looking to upgrade.
In this episode. We are going to first look at the different styles and material or fabrics. Then which size ( length and width ) would provide enough protection from the different weather conditions.
Also what type of ridgeline to hang your tarp and more.

excellent video again, I have been hammock backpacking for 4 years. I have been wanting to upgrade my tarp since since purchasing, I have a hennessy expedition, I don't care for the tarp it came with. I have never got wet in rain but I always worry I will. Your videos are very resourceful and touch all the options out there. It helped me to purchase a tarp upgrade.

Thanks, brother! I just purchased a Hammock Gear DCF wide tarp with doors. I am moving up from a Gossamer Gear Spinn Twinn ground tarp which has been an excellent tarp for the past 5 years, but I wanted a bit more coverage for cold cold weather use.
One thing that I would recommend is Lineloc guyline (or, guide line) adjusters. I can adjust the tension of the tarp while underneath it, and tightening lines when placing stakes is super easy. Loved your explanations. Very novice friendly. Good stake choice, btw. I have full-size MSR Groundhogs and they excel in loose forest duff, which I mostly encounter on the Appalachian Trail. Wish I could Semper Fi you, but I got a high draft number near the end of the Vietnam conflict, so I thanked God and never looked back, eventually becoming a follower of the teaching of Jesus, avid Bible student, and now, retired from landscaping, a volunteer groundskeeper at the non-denominational church that I attend (virtually, by consent of the majority of congregants). I CAN, however, call you brother. It means a lot to me. God bless! 👍🇺🇸

glad i found this channel. couople years ago we did a bunch of camping and i always wanted to hammock camp, but i didnt have a proper set up and i always ended up in my tent before the night was up. went with some dutchware with the proper accessories, cant wait to try it out.

Clear and concise, as always. Tarps are one thing I don't mind upgrading incrementally, since I like having a variety of them around. Getting an order for some Dutch bling put together to outfit my last new tarp and you're making me want a new winter tarp. 😆 Glad to see you are doing okay up there, brother. Stay well.

I'am waiting on my New hammock. I just ordered the Superior straps to hang it.. I have an old Clarks outdoor tropical now. Used a tarp from Home Depot to hang in my back yard. I will get a regular
tarp to go with me on the trail. I was able to form doors on my Home Depot tarp. Of course it was 15 by 10. It was good practice to get use to new hammock camping.. i'm looking forward to a few overnights in the wild. Glad you put out these videos.
Please let me know how your trip turned out when you get back. A warning though. When you wake up in the morning. You are not going to want to get out of your hammock.

I started with a dome tent tarp over my hammock and made it work with my hiking poles . bulk yes . dry hell yeah . i want the one closes up like a tent . great info man !!

Another great video. I agree with you on all points. This elder hiker would not think about going on a hike without my trekking poles. Yes, yes, yes on the hammock. I was introduced to the "jungle hammock" as a young boy scout in 1957. I've used tents and slept on my sleeping mat, but nothing beats a hammock for comfort. You've got all of the right answers. @@AdventureswiththeMarine I wish I did. The sad story about all of my things is that, when I was away in the Coast Guard in Alaska, my mother paid somebody to come and clean out our basement. Of course, the jungle hammocks (I had two), my Lionel train set, baseball cards, comic books, etc, etc were gone in an instant. My mother had a clean basement and I lost my childhood. Oh well, all those things probably weren't worth anything today....were they?
That is interesting. The same thing happen to me. The things that where part of my childhood is no more. I wish I could of past them on to my children and now my grandchildren.

Awesome thank you. I was considering using a cheap tarp but other RUclipsrs where discouraging against them. I figured they would work just fine for a car camper
I would spend the money on a under quilt and a cheap tarp (if I am not putting on a lot of miles hiking ) then buy a expensive tarp. Poly tarps work great. But they are a little heavy and very bulky. Don't get me wrong. Silnylon, Silpoly and Cuben Fiber tarps are much better if you are a backpacker. But if you are a car camper. Poly tarps are just fine.

Just returned from a 4 day trip here in the Colorado Mountains. I use a hammock / tarp mainly because of the un-even / sloped ground where I go hiking. Finding a flat area for a tent can be challenging in the mountains but trees are everywhere! My biggest challenge... staking out the tarp on a slope. One side always seems to be closer or up against the hammock causing condensation to build up. it takes a little knowledge and experience but the main trick is to have one side closer to the ground than the other (sometimes several feet difference) and the hammock in the center. Something you might want to do a video on... pitching a tarp on slopes.
I am leaving for a trip tomorrow. Then I am going to do 2 more videos on the the tarp. ( 1. The ridge line and then 2. staking and pitching the tarp ) That is a great tip to add. Thank you TwentyOneTwelve. And if you have anymore ideas. Please share them. I would really appreciate it.

I will start taking my dog when the bugs are not so bad. And that is because he sleeps underneath me in my hammock. You are right. A tent is better for a dog. Thank you Tony for watching. I always appreciate it.
I didn't see in the selection what I consider the best tarp I've seen in my 60 plus years of hammock camping. It's the Mini Tarp from Warbonnet and is the only tarp of this configuration except for home made or custom ones. It has Peaks at each end which extend out from the trap and can be used to stop rain from blowing in at either end. Or if you don't want to use them then just fold them back over the tarp. Even better it comes in the Bushwack Camo ( Custom Tarp Section , It's a custom Tarp color ) pattern.

Very fortunate to have stumbled onto your "Hammock How To" series and I am binge watching them all now. One question I have is if you have an opinion on the split snake skins vs the single snake skin and what the pros vs cons are when considering.
I am so happy that you stumbled on my channel. First of all the mesh snake skins are better than the dyneema or nylon ones. You don't have to turn them inside out when wet. And they dry very quickly. I have both single and split. I like them both. But if I had to choose. I would pick the single. Because they are faster to take off and put on.

You are very thorough and your prolific filmmaking has convinced me to look into my first hammock setup. I have had a few run-ins with some of our local and highly venomous wildlife (Snakes) on my last few outings over Summer and am not so comfy taking the Wife out in a tent with the amount that are about lately. I saw 2 Browns and a Tiger on my last trip alone. They're hard to spot, quick strikers, they'll kill you in minutes and love to tuck in under your groundsheet so will be leaving the tenting to the Winter time when I'm out with the Lady. If you have any suggestions for a beginners kit I would love to hear about them as there is very little in the way of information or retailers dedicated to hammock gear down here in Australia. I would also like to see more on the setup of an under quilt as I can't quite get my head around what equipment I need/specific quilts to get one going. Cheers.
It is very important to get a hammock that fits you. Most of the hammocks are made way to small. ( unless you are going to hang out at the parks for an hour or so ) I prefer a hammock without a bug net. In the summer time. I have no choice but to use one. Otherwise I will get chewed up. So I would suggest that you get one with a integrated bug net. There are many companies out there making hammocks. But my three favorite companies are Dutchware Gear ( www.dutchwaregear.com )

Another great tutorial. In the next one, please show the actual techniques for height setting of the tarp along with the actual hardware techniques for securing the tarp. I know, you showed the MSR stakes but what about the different tensioning methods to the stakes and how to attach the tarp to the tree. I just bough the Kammock UL setup and having a tough time With the tarp. Thanks!

Or pitch your square tarp like the wintertarp. Only difference is that it’s harder to close the “doors”/corners.

Can you give some recommendations on tarps? Preferably not ones that cost over 80 bucks not an ultralight backpacker and don't mind carrying some weight got a 20 dollar 11 foot hammock from rural king trying to find a decent tarp to go with it mostly be out spring summer fall and sometimes winter thanks for the video you have helped out tremendously
If you are just starting out. And if your not putting in the miles on a hike. I would just get a cheap poly tarp ( 12' x 10' ) from the hardware or department store. But you will need to use the rock tie in trick to attach to the middle of the tarp to the ridgeline. Otherwise on Amazon. They have the Rain Fly Evolution or the Uiger Hammock Rain Fly Camping Tarp. Again. You will want them to be 12' x10' They come with stakes, guy lines and a stuff sack. They are both around 30 dollars. They are not the best. But you get what you paid for. But for staring out. What dyneema ropes diameter is optimal for such tarps?
They have a small diameter. Light weight and very compactable. Low to no stretch. Water proof. And 400 lbs. weight capacity. Which makes them perfect. thank you Nomars for watching. I really appreciate it.
I found a nice "looking" tarp on Amazon by gold armor, lots of timeout points and sizes.wonder how good it could be?

The best hammock. Is the one you have. But if you are looking for a camping hammock. There are others that are a lot better.
What are good sources for snake skins and double stuff sacks?
At first. You could only get them from MountainGoat Mesh Tarp Storage Sleeves ( snakeskin ) From Https://www.outdoorstrailgear.com . I still say they make the best ones. But you can get them from other companies like hammock gear or duthware gear. And the same is for the double end stuff sack. I would always buy mine from Jacks-R Better ( www.jacksrbetter.com ) if I need one. I like there quality. I believe they call them Speed Sacks.

I especially find the hanging insulation cover interesting, and it looks like another hammock I would like to own.
My only concern is the length, which appears to be 8.5 feet, but someone else told me that this was the length of the ridge line, and not the hammock, so I am still a luttle hesitant, and not sure about that length.
I am 6.2 and currently use a 10' hammock, so I am just a little hesitant about a shorter hammock, but not sure if it is a deal breaker.
