I lost 65lbs in four months just by reducing carbs to only breakfast. Healthy ones at that, oatmeal, whole grains, fruits. Meat and veggies only for lunch and dinner. Lots if water. Excersize 5 days a week. Nothing crazy. No gym memberships. Pushups and running. Stuff you can do at home. Been life changing.
so you just started doing sport and move your ass. ofcourse you will lose fat. reducing carbs helps in this but you changed your lifestyle. thats the main factor
@@johnmachter40 sugar is the biggest thing that makes you gain weight. Too many carbs turn to sugar however you should utilize carbs if you're training 5 days a week. Fasting while working out and doing breathing exercises feels amazing
16/8 fasting has helped me go from 434 lbs to 371lbs since august 1st. its working for me and i know its a life style that i will continue for life.. under 300 by the 4th of july is the goal.
utewbing, the problem with that is exercise greatly increases appetite and is not the answer for people struggling with cravings, weight loss etc. @Carlos T, you keep doing what you’re doing man! Start to push towards 18/6 and then 20/4 or one meal a day and only think about adding exercise when you have absolutely killed your addiction to carbs or you’re approaching your ideal weight 💪🏼
I've begun to go for walk/runs with my dog and also incline walks on my treadmill. I just did a 30 hour fast yesterday and dinner is usually chicken breast or some other protein. Thanks for the motivation guys
I’m 6’2 and in good shape with a 32 inch waist I’m 220. I got all the way up to 312 pounds despite working out 5 days a week and not eating what I thought was a decent diet. I couldn’t lose weight like I could in the past so in my efforts to figure out why I stumbled onto Dr Berg. I went hard full keto with a 21/3 fasting to eating schedule. In 5 months I lost over 100 pounds, after the first 30 days the weight melted off. Apparently I was pre diabetic with insulin resistance. Literally all of my health problems went away, my heart palpitations my swollen joints and joint pain, I slept better had more energy than I knew what to do with as well as a huge increase to my libido. Keto is legit and I feel that sugar is a poison and people eat far far too much.
Dr Berg is an awesome resource. His videos help motivate me.... but the fifty pounds I’ve lost and increased health benefits are for real. Sugar is like a hard addictive drug. It’s hard to get away from with out a little discipline.
I had a major cerebellar stroke in 2013. Brain surgery, the whole 9 yards. After all this brain trauma, neuro fatigue is a major problem. I can't exercise 'cos I can't walk that far. I wanted to reduce the inflammation in my body so started keto in January 2020. To date (June 2021), my fatigue is way better, my energy levels are much higher, my skin is better. Plus, I happen to have lost 30kgs. I'm the lightest I've been since I was in my 20s. I'm now 63.
My wife and I started Keto just over a year ago and I've lost over 100lbs and she has lost over 30lbs. She was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 8 months ago and has almost completely reversed it with diet and mild exercise alone. After cutting out the processed sugars and refined carbs, we both started feeling loads better, our energy levels went up, and we actually look forward to our workouts instead of dreading them! Thank you guys for bringing this information to the forefront! -Brett

As soon as I focused on cutting out processed foods and sugar my health changed dramatically and fast. I eat as much natural foods as I possibly can! I now even enjoy growing a lot of vegetables.
most processed foods have ingredients that help sustain shelf life, that is where the problem comes in. Thats why natural foods will age quickly vs food that was processed. Look at the ingredients then anything else..
Went from 290 to 180 in about 13 months, by not eating sugars and carbs anymore, also almost cured my psoriasis! Sure beats what the dermatologist suggested.
When I cut my carbs out my psoriasis is so much better, but when I compete for wrestling I try to eat a few carbs to keep my energy levels up for all of my training, eat a few carbs for my first meal out of fast and it helps a ton with my energy through my workouts
I mean, I've done my research, and done my sport at both attempts, and adding like 20 carbs a day (if I have practice that day) allows me to maintain ketosis and I don't die when I do hard drilling practices or live practices

It has taken me 4 years to find this podcast and to see that I came to the same conclusion all by myself. Always tired after lunch, aching joints ect. My body told me to stop various carb intakes and I feel so much better. No bread, no sugar, no pasta. Refined carbs, grain based foods. Quite remarkable...

I recently stopped eating carbs like bread and pasta - and I'm a pasta maniac so I was really eating lot of that stuff. I'm 2 weeks in and already I'm feeling a lot better and my damn belly isn't so bloated. Still big - but I'm seeing progress. Also I'm not so tired and sleepy all the time.

Thanks to Joe and some of his guests (shout out to Dom), I've been doing Keto for 4 months. I started at 302, and I'm down to 245 (I'm 6'4"). My exercise has increased by just a little amount, so it's almost diet alone that has me down 57 pounds. I'll do the keto diet the rest of my life. I understand how bad processed sugar/flour is now. Never again will I be the slob that I was.
I tried Atkins several times several years ago (basically re branded as Keto of late), with some success and no side effects until the last time. I was in hard core ketosis for several weeks, not hungry and tons of energy, until my heart starting doing something weird, beating really hard and slow to the point where it kept me up at night. Once I went out of ketosis, it went back to normal. Tried again thinking it wasn’t ketosis, weird heart beat came back and I thought this can’t be good so I haven’t gotten back into it since. I think the idea of keto is good, but I just can’t handle being in ketosis anymore which is a bummer.
@unknown it’s normal, Keto is only for super obese ppl, if u just wanna lose some weight to look shredded, just carve out a caloric deficit and go do lifting/cardio 😂. Ur brain needs a looong time to switch from carb to no carb diet for it being able to function normally
Joe, up until a few months ago I thought you were just some crazy ass drugged out comedian who just made me laugh but I never really took you seriously. After really following your podcasts you have opened my eyes to so many new topics and I have began a lifestyle change to balance my nutritional intake. You’re ideas and topics are so relatable and intuitive because you break down the science of nutrition into an understandable language. Keep it up man thanks for sharing everything!
You are what you eat. A little bread here and there I don't think is bad really. But, anything processed is a no for me. I eat nothing that comes in a packaged bag. Fast food, stay away from it! I'm down 49 lbs. Started 28 August, 2017, at 220lbs. By 27 Nov 2017 I was down to 180 lbs, a pant size and a couple holes tighter on my belt. Less body fat (definitely noticeable). I slowed it down, and haven't been as strict through 2018, and hovered around 177. I've started intermittent fasting 16/8 and leaning keto in food choices, and I'm down to 170-171. Do u mind telling what your diet consisted of..wanting to do this but how exactly did you lose your weight? What Foods? Great job by the way, that's awesome! Thanks

Everything joe said at the end is true. I was depressed and in a shitty relationship and really didn’t get much sleep so I ate alot of crappy food in between the times I should’ve been asleep. And then you wake up do it all over sleeping in late eating carby meals. I went from 280 to 210
I've tried a lot of different diets to find what works for me. The fun thing about the diets for me is that I always learn about new ingredients and learn new recipes. Low carb had the biggest impact on my overall well being but was culinarily too restrictive. But reducing carbs and eating whole grains, beans, lentils, lots of vegetables and meats is the sweet spot. But there is no "one size fits all" diet. Try things out and learn about what works for you. And don't shove it down other people's throats! 😊
It's the habit you need nor the substance. Find an innocuous substance. I used to be addicted to marguerite as. Well I guess technically they're called palomas A paloma is squirt to killa lime juice and salt. But they don't make diet squirt anymore and I didn't want to drink anymore. So now I mix fresca which is sugar free lime juice and salt no tequila no sugar. I have one every night when I get home it's awesome. I also have a bone broth with it. That is my nightly ritual I don't miss the sugar I don't miss the booze because I've got this I've got another substance that's virtually calorie free.
I’m not condoning nor supporting the use of weed, but after a long day of work, and working out, smoking always loosens me up. Wether it be giving me tolerance for pain sensation, sleep, testosterone. Hell , i think it helped me with appetite, there’s so many shady substances out there that’s just a fat sloppy mess, substances that can put your entire way of life to shit, but weed is helpful in it’s own merit. So hard for people to understand how long you can go without food when we aren't putting carbs and sugar in our pie hole. Went carnivore 4 months ago at 52 and never had so much consistent energy on demand. Still in weight loss mode but plan to try to vary the diet a little more once I reach my fighting weight, wherever that winds up just eating OMAD and eating to satiety.
While i am 100% onboard with keto, i wish people wouldn't be so judgmental and try to be the health police. It's about finding what works for YOUR body and what YOU will stick to consistently. Find a lifestyle that is healthy and sustainable and don't worry about anyone that says their way is better, as long as your way is HEALTHY and working for you and you feel good.
It seems like diet has become almost as controversial as politics and religion. I agree, it's very subjective. What works for you might not work for me.
I find this unsettling for the people who still are obese and continue to eat high calorie diets but don’t use any good amount of that energy. Basically put in enough work to equal the amount of calories you put in.
zParallaxz calories matter of course but it’s not that simple. The type of calories you eat do matter. 500 calories in fat and protein are going to last a lot longer in your body and give you a level amount of energy versus 500 calories of pasta which will give you a spike of energy then a crash when it’s over.
lorridzak I’m not talking about people who actually will learn about the difference between starches and proteins. I’m referring to the average joe or mom who keeps eating highly processed foods and snacks while not burning enough of the calories they consume. I.e soda isn’t good for you, but if your keeping active by moving all day and walking a dog per say, the effects lessen.

I think Joe makes his best point around minute 9. Work plays a great part in our health. Working a shit low income job were I was not happy, but had to spend large amounts of time to make a living wage. Now I have a good job with good pay, I spend less time at work, afford a gym membership and can afford to eat a better diet.
There's nothing wrong with anecdotal evidence in addition to more rigorously gathered scientific evidence. You can be scientific and still discuss anecdotes and case studies. There isn't a scientific study on literally everything accounting for every possible variable, and things vary from person to person. It makes sense to take anecdotal evidence into account where documented experimentation may be lacking.
I think healthy whole grains and beans are an important part of a good diet, fruits too. It’s all about balance and eliminating the processed foods and added sugars. You don’t have to be keto.
That snowball effect he talked about is so real. I switched from drinking coffee to tea, started going to bed earlier, had less anxiety and energy highs and lows, and can control my hunger and mood better. All of that has aided me in going low calorie (I can't do keto, but hands down cal in vs out still works, and fueling my body with healthy food it metabolizes well works)
Best thing to do is finding the best meal plan for the day and repeating it over and over to start. Find something that gives what you need nutritionally and energy wise and eat that every day. So start with finding a good breakfast, lunch, and dinner that satisfies your cravings, gives you your necessary nutrients (which you can also find pills and supplements for). Track if it's giving you the recommended amount of minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, etc and eat that everyday. Then add another meal plan after you get sick of that. And now you have two days worth of meals you can prepare and alternate every other day. Slowly add more and more until you finally have a whole week planned out and written down. Then life gets easy. It comes down to restocking the ingredients needed and fucking cooking it. Once you have done this it really helps you stay on course and away from donuts, bread, and other foods that are bad for you. Get your shit together

Nor will they refer her to a dietitian or nutritionist to help with dietary needs. She has gained 30 pounds in the past two years, despite working out six days a week and watching her portion sizes. She’s been put on various thyroid meds, and no drug or dosage helps with her fatigue, continuous weight gain and hair thinning. She was looking into trying out the ketogenic diet, because she’s also insulin-resistant having an under active thyroid, and keto helps with people who have that issue, by lowering or eliminating the intake of bad refined carbs (anything from a packet or a box). But then she heard that keto can put further strain on the thyroid and cause a whole host of other issues in the body. She also read that exercise can stress a hypothyroid body, further exacerbating symptoms. Since she cannot get an answer on the optimal diet or exercise for her condition. Back in the early 1990’s I worked in health food and supplements at a chain that was bought by GNC. It was long boring days and before cell phones so I read a lot of the books on the shelf. The Atkins Diet was just becoming a thing. What I learned was something I forgot from 9th grade biology about calories - protein and carbs 4c/gm each and fat 9c/gm. What the books taught me was that our bodies burn carbs first, proteins 2nd and fats last. What I realized was that if you want to burn fat, limit your carbs and up your protein if you’re working out. I later learned that fat consumption is not a necessary evil to higher protein diets, but just plain old necessary. MCTs and L-carnitine especially were useful to sustain fat burning during workouts. With low carbs you could get shredded pretty quickly. Again, I later learned that food combinations was a huge part of the equation. Carbs can be consumed without issue if you say ate pasta by itself mixed with other carbs and a little fat. Proteins and greens are a good combo, but starchy foods are not because your body works really hard to digest meat using the carbs first it was mixed with. Paleo-diet is Mamés some sense because of the simple food choices and lack of combos. Susan Summers wrote several how-to recipe books on these combos and it really works. The issue today is all the competing marketing for diet plans trying to win your business and confusing us with good info mixed with junk science and promising better results with less effort. But at the core is the simple fact that we can’t lose weight and optimize our energy when we use it up in extended digestion. No steak and potatoes; try steak and salad. Not burger and fries; try fries in your salad. We have to retrain ourselves to accept new forms of meals and make them our new normal.
Weight loss is all calories. Eat less than maintenance calories and lose weight. Eat steak and potato's for every meal and lose weight, as long you you are eating under maintenance calories. If you wanna get real crazy burn a few extra calories by walking or doing cardio exercise. Agree there are a lot of competing diet plans today and I bet they all have one thing in common. Eating less calories than you maintenance calories in order to lose weight.
@@oscarduke7946 so you're saying that meat and potatoes is just as good as meat and greens? Protein and complex carbs vs simple carbs makes no difference? Yeah, ok.
There’s a MASSIVE difference between “refined” carbs and slow-burning natural carbs like yams, steel-cut oats, brown rice, beans, black-eyes peas etc. I’m so tired of people lumping all carbs together. They’re not at all the same. Keto is a fad, and isn’t right for everyone. Most people would do just as well just eating clean: lean proteins (animal or plant-based), plenty of veggies (aka fibrous carbs) and whole fruits, healthy fats, and the slow burning natural starchy carbs I mentioned above. Keto requires cutting out an entire food group, which is unsustainable for most people, and frankly not healthy long-term. So many people who lose weight on keto just gain it back, with a lowered metabolism to boot.
Yup, couldn’t have said it better myself. I was actually thinking about starting a Keto diet but I did my research and found Keto to be a short-term fix instead of a long-term solution for a healthy lifestyle.

Like you, Joe. I strongly believe BALANCE is the key to health. Not everything works for everyone, but the basics healthy foods does work for everyone. Balance is what has worked best for me. I found. I'm not a red meat eater. Not anymore. Super rare I'll have it. I'm more into chicken, salmon, other fish, eggs, veggies, fruits, etc. I try to control the carb. And I do feel best when I fast 2-4 times a week, whether for half a day, go very light that day or just go on water for a 1-2 days. I mostly drink water. Zero sodas. Juicing and all natural once in while. Like frappe, love them, I control it. The best you can do is always keep trying to eat healthy and what's best for you, your mind, and body. True for everything in life, BALANCE! Love most of the topics you bring. THANKS 💚
I lost 65 lbs since December off of this, man. Occasionally cheated when special occasions came around, but otherwise stuck to it. Absolutely legit, and I'd recommend it to anyone!!
15:00 onwards. So I had black strap mollasses recently for the last 6 months, 1-2 table spoons a day. now i have been diagnozed with chronic kidney disease. im super accurate with my overall diet so could this be the sole reason? i have absolutely no other reason to blame.
I lost 130 pounds in about 8 months when I cut nearly all carbs from my diet. I went from 320 to 190. Today, I only eat carbs specifically as a source of fuel for when I run. I eat those carbs and burn it all off during my workout. Outside of that, eating a high protein and fat diet keeps me feeling full. Carbs are not filling at all. In fact, the more carbs you eat, the more your brain craves carbs. When I was 320 pounds and eating 2 or 3 cheeseburgers per day, my total cholesterol was around 90. This is borderline low. Today, with a very healthy diet high in unsaturated fat and protein and low in carbohydrates, my total cholesterol is still around 90. I know it is purely anecdotal to give myself as an example, but there is no proven link between high cholesterol consumption and high cholesterol levels. There is proven link between both obesity and genetics when it comes to cholesterol. The fact is, you cholesterol is more likely to come down by losing weight than it is by switching to a low cholesterol diet.

This is undoubtedly true. But you can also go overboard with whole grains and fruits. Moderation is key
What is a healthy whole grain vs a regular whole grain?

Make sure it's the artificial sugars and not natural.

IDK why Joe loves pasta so much; it's cheap, low quality, garbage food. He truly is at the perigee of guido wop and Neanderthal de-evolution.
This is genuinely one of the best Joe "____" Rogan comments ever made
Obviously Phafanapolis, you know nothing about good food and can not appreciate what it means to “growing up Italian” in America. The pasta, in its many shapes and forms and often hand made, is a treat when sauced with authentic, fresh garden tomato’s with spices and herbs, hours on the stove top...home made with love... and the best part, Sunday Dinner where the family and often friends would gather for a great meal and conversation. It was really like a celebration, every Sunday Dinner.

I've been eating a carnivore diet since Feb 15th of this year. I have eaten grapes and watermelon, at different times, and went straight back to the arthritis type pain in my hip and back. It's crazy! As long as I'm eating this way, I feel great. I'm honestly not sure I'll ever go back to anything else. It's hard to make sense of, but I know I feel better.
I have been doing Keto for a year now. I have lost 65 pounds and my labs are great. I miss biscuits and gravy but discipline is the key.
I dont think everyone is the same, genetics play a role too... for me keto, a low carb, high fat diet make my mind feel clearer and my endurance goes through the roof.
ill do lots of plants in my diet with healthy potions of lean meats and protein, coconut oil, peanut butter, avocados.. after a few weeks of trying this diet out, my Friends at the gym thought I was juicing because i was getting vascular and losing body fat rapidly lmao, when in reality no drugs were involved my body was simply responding better to this kinda diet vs a conventional diet. I think keto and many low carb diets can certainly help a vast amount of people. Again its not the same for everyone but for me it works.

@@Realifesaiyan1 What if wanna start keto diet for more energy and to reduce anxiety at work but also don't wanna lose weight?
I think genetics play a role in how much carbs the body can take, so carbs shouldn't be prioritized. Peter Attia has good articles on this.
Started keto because glucose and HbA1C kept going up - unintended but strangely cool things happened I cannot explain but welcomed:
1) skin tags under arms disappeared
2) chronic athlete's foot gone
3) no more body or face acne, even when stressed
4) ZERO nasal congestion PERFECT nose breathing after a lifetime of chronic sniffles/allergies/runny nose - even while sleeping
5) Went from 187-167lbs, 34 to 31 in waist
You are 100% correct. When I can stay on meat and veggies with a random "cheat day", I feel so good.
But, I had surgery a few months ago and I certainly slipped off of my diet. I quickly gained 25 pounds and have inflammation in my legs. It is amazing what effect you diet can have.
Back on my diet and back in the gym .... that's the answer for me.

The modern American diet right now: high carbs, high fat,over-sized portions. You eat and drink sugar like there's no tomorrow.
High carbs and sugar are meant to be treats, eaten for a event or holiday, yet we live off of it. We should be living off of food you could find in nature, not super processed

My GF’s doctor AND endocrinologist can’t give her a straight answer about her recently diagnosed “sub-clinical hypothyroidism”.
Back to square one, and she feels helpless. I’m not a doctor, but I wish I were. I can only google so much with her until it becomes a fucking abyss of marketing ads and money-making fads. This is frustrating.

Thanks for sharing this priceless information, Matthew! Will begin to implement this in phases for myself and my family right away 🙏

@@adarshrajbhatt6557 its pseudo science
An awful amount of time passed before someone said it.
Yup, couldn’t have said it better myself. I was actually thinking about starting a Keto diet but I did my research and found Keto to be a short-term fix instead of a long-term solution for a healthy lifestyle.

I had Lupus, clinical depression for 20+ years, arthritis in knee from old injury and extreme dairy allergies, went strict vegan, mostly plant-based and lots of green juices, within two months it was all corrected plus I lost a lot of weight. Wake up, bounce out of bed, high energy all day long, and look 20 years younger than I am. I don't know if these different groups are always shitting on each other and they both work but I know from my own experience that a true vegan diet is very healthy, for me the meat and dairy make me very sick.
man the f up and drink some milk buddy ... its means you are not man enough to drink milk and eat meat.
What about oils, sugar and junk food? Did you eat that before going strict vegan?
I've been vegan for 4 years, I rarely ate meat before, but I was a big fan of dairy products. Now I can say that my skin looks better, I have more energy, I sleep well and I don't miss animal products, especially because I became vegan for ethical reasons. Yuck. That shit looks and tastes like yellow glue. How do you even look at it let alone eat it?
