Hi Lance, just a quick shout out to let you know I have learnt so much through watching a lot of your TEA 20 Video's. I'm 72 live in New Zealand and just purchased an old Tea 20 so your knowlege is awesome. Thank you so much . Merv Wilson
Very helpful film, iv got my dads old 1952 TVO here in England, it’s not ran since 1980, and iv been working on it in the evenings, this video helped a bunch 👌
Great vid Lance, I m working on my 58 MF gas, got sparks, but seeing your #1 distributor line up with spark blade and all pointing to # 1 spark hole on engine. I realize the previous own tinkered it incorrectly.
Thanks Lance, you got me through a water pump replacement and now a new distributor and coil. I really appreciate these videos, thanks for sharing your expertise.
LANCE,never new about the hole through the flywheel just shows 67yrs and still leaning , I love the old saying ,a man that knows it all,I think you knows f--k all !!!.regards from an old Pommy B.
A bit of trivia! The petrol motor in the Fergy was used in the Vanguard Spacemaster, a sporty sedan sold in the 1950s in Australia and probably South Africa and New Zealand, but also in the sport Morgan 4+4 a rather snazzy sports 2 seater beyond the reach of most 18 Year olds of the day. Hey Lance, you could probably hot up the old girl with a couple of SU carbs and some super grade petrol!!!! You could probably plough an extra acre per day with the improved performance. Steve the ever hopeful young mechanic!!!
I know a fellow with a Triumph vintage race car with the same engine. He put new con rods in and a super charger and has 170hp at the rear wheels on the dyno. I was impressed with that!
Thank you so much for this video. I just replaced the points on my te20 to electronic points, Powerspark Electronic Ignition Kit for Lucas D3A4 Distributor Positive Earth (K33pp). The reason to do the switch to “point less” is the high humidity here in Denmark most of the year. Often the old points did not work well. Any way you trick with the screwdriver in flywheel and rotating the distributor worked very well using a multimeter connected to the ground and the input side on the coil. Easy to measure when the distributer was in the right position!
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb forgot my account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me.
Great video. I followed your instructions and now my ‘53 TE-D runs like dream. I put in the long spark plugs 14x23 mm, 0.34mm gap. The longer spark plugs should fit the kerosene top better than regular sized ones. Thanks...

I have got to the stage of trying to engage the starter with the ring gear , but although it spins , it does not engage . On taking the starter out again , it looks like instead of engaging , it is damaging the teeth on the ring gear . I am just a novice at this , so would appreciate your advice , to get my resto back on track , Thanks in the meantime , Ted .
Bundy, I don't know where my rotor was pointing when I took my distributor off. You don't mention in the video that there are actually 4 holes in the flywheel, so how do I tell which hole to set no1 cylinder to without perhaps being 180 reg out as no1 cylinder will rise to tdc twice but it's the firing stroke hole needed! Thanks
G Day Gordon, The distributor drive is offset and will only go back in and engage in one position. If you turn your distributor up side down and look at the drive web you will see what I mean. As the distributor is driven from the camshaft it has to be correct.
I'm with you there - so if you point the rotor at 10 o'clock & do your check for spark then only one of the 4 holes in the flywheel would ever be lined up with your screwdriver. I've been trying for a couple of months now to get my tea20 started (on handle as no starter - as a result bit tired!) no joy yet
Hi just a question. I have a Ferguson ted20. I have been able to get it going from watching your videos as I am a newbie to it all and has been very helpful. I have given my Dynamo to someone I know that can recondition them and he asked if it was positive or negative earth. How would I know as when I had it it never had no battery on and had new battery terminals on the leads so I just put it on with the negative terminal to the lead that was earth out on the chassis of the tractor. It all works but not sure if it was a positive earth but how else would I know which way round the earth is? Thanks Ed
So as long as I polarise the Dynamo to negative earth then I will be fine as I have the distributor and ignition coil set up to negative earth like you did in your let’s gets it started video
Hi Lance! I'm restoring a TED20 from 1954 and the engine has been completely dismantled. Do you have any idea of how the gear underneth the distributor should be fitted against the camshaft? Unfortunately I can't find anything regarding this in the workshop manual. I suppose it must be in a certain way so that the timing is right? Best regards,Martin, Sweden
G Day Martin, I had a look in my manual and could not see it either but in the past I have the engine on top dead centre firing on number one and place the gear so the contact points would just be opening to fire on number one as well.
Sorry Lance but I am a bit confused. ('56 TEA20) Screwdriver in flywheel @ TDC then you mention 10 deg. I have done that and have the timing marks on flywheel showing '0' TDC so where does 10 deg come in...is the the initial static required by moving flywheel to '10' mark?
Hi lance,I have set the timing with the timing light as you have done in this video but my tractor runs rough .I end up rotating the distributor to get it to run anyway proper and it ends up miles away from where the timing light showed correct timing.Any ideas what could be wrong,Great video by the way.Thanks.
G Day Tony, Yes they can be a bit of a fiddle. The Gold 35 always has a fluffy idle but knuckles in with a bit of load nicely. Never been able to fix that.
I got just one spark when i turn off the key. I have new distributor, new points, new condenser, new wiring, new coil new plugs. The spark disappears when cranking. Maybe points are installed incorrectly (touches the housing)?

Great video Lance. I'll try and set the timing. I've got drama with my TE20 . cant seem to get it running smooth. she's got a popping sound when on idle . can't tell if it's fuel or electrical related? replaced points , plugs and kit through the carby. wondering if you'd point me in right direction please?
Popping can be a tight valve, have you set the tappets yet? They do sound a little rough at idle often but under load they settle right down I have found out at times.
Hi lance. My mf35 petrol tends to spit and splutter similar to your grey fergie in the vid. When cold I can also see what I think my be petrol splitting out the exhaust, albeit only a tiny bit. When warm it splutters a lot less but still there. What do u think it is? Got new plugs, dist cap, points set, standard ingnition setting, new plugs and leads, new wiring, carb rebuilt, clean fuel, sediment bowel clean, governor set nicely. Any ideas? Do they all do this?
That may be a TE20 but its not a TED 20 as the D meant it was a Diesel . we had one in the early 60's bought second hand around the time that Massey Harris took them over and the brought out the 3 cylinder Perkins engined Massey Ferguson 35

No4 valves rocking, or wind the engine with no1 plug out and feel for compression or the rotor in the distributor will point at no 1 spark plug. Either will work.
@@BundyBearsShed ok I try. It’s not a problem if I have moved the distributor before because I’m not sure to remember if the distributor was not turning by accident. Because I have added a triumph TR3 pedestal for ad a tachometer and I don’t remember if I have turning the rotor of the distributor to check but if I have turned the rotor and I replace it directly that a problem?
Hi, Great Video. I bought a kit online(leads, spark plugs, points, cap and coil) as the tractor would be going fine then just start coughing and spluttering. Could you tell me Is your wire from the ignition key going to the + or - on your coil? I have a positive earth also. Also I have allot of slop in the distrubutor cam shaft, so much so that when adjusting housing to get test light to show, the points lobe is pushing the shaft around with it. Im thinking now this could be the root of my problem? I notice a couple of springs below the points cover to recenter cam shaft. Maybe these have lost there spring. Could you shed some light on this... am i barking up the right tree?
If you are running a positive earth system the positive terminal on the coil goes to the points and the negative goes to the ignition switch. The distributor slop can be a problem but I have found that opening the points to say 0.025" does help it a little. I have a video on restoring your distributor here somewhere .

Lucas systems require positive ground. Why? Lucas coils were wound for positive ground (negative spark). They were wound for the transformer action which gives an extra 300 volts induced into the Secondary coil winding. Primary and secondary windings are wound in series. Also there is less burning in the 4 contacts in the distributor (4 cylinder) as this is transferred to the rotor cap. Electrical Theory, isn't it great?
G'day Lance well the old girl runs, good one. Looking at her you wouldn't think that you would even get her going! When you come to doing a total restoration job do you replace or refurbish most of the parts, or replace for new? Thanks for the video it bought back old memories of trying to get my EH going on wet winters day. Thanks lance very interesting on how you went about setting the distributor John PS just one thing did you do a compression test before hand..
G Day John, No compression test on this as yet. Some times I restore the parts and others I just fit new ones. Sparex supply a few for me and in that case I just replace them. Very satisfying re building them though.
Bundy Bears Shed thanks for replying Lance I recon it would be a very satisfying especially when you see a tractor in that condition and restore it back to new like you have done before, great job John
That was covered in Ferguson TED20 Barn Find Lets get it Going part 4, I completely overhauled the distributor in part 3 and 4. No need to do it again here. Link to video. ruclips.net/video/MtbExzI5vNc/видео.html
I went through and replaced the points and condenser on my '55 TED20 (following your video on it) and set the timing with a test light just like you did in the video, but the thing wouldn't start. It sounded like it was kicking back when it fired, as if the timing was way early, so I re-set everything to the witness marks as it was before i took it apart, and it fired right up! Thing is the way it's set up right now is about 1/8 of a turn counter clockwise on the distributor, which to me sounds WAY retarded, am I missing something here or is there something funny going on with my tractor? Many thanks for the videos, they're a great help and wonderful entertainment in their own right!
Someone at some stage may have the distributor drive gear off a tooth or so but the test light should allow for that but the flywheel timing mark will be out. On this video I miss spoke re retard and advance but I put a note in the description. In the end it is about getting it running correctly however you do it,
Thanks for the vid, just a bit confused. When you said after we have the screwdriver in the Flywheel and the points set to just opening you said to retard the distributor one line, but on my ted20 turning the distributor clockwise would advance the timing. Nick.

Yes the water pump is bad, I have done a video on replacing it. It should be out in a day or so.
Great video! What you presented, is it the same procedure for a TO20 Ferguson?
G Day Gilbert. I have never done a TO20 but I suppose it would not be very much different.
good vid well done think we put a fireball 318 in this one lol
Well it has the flash steering wheel for it lol.
Thanks Lance
Any time
How many times do you turns the carburettor main jet?
1 3/4 turns out from full in is a good starting point. For hard work open it to 2 1/4 if you need to.
Thanks for sharing, this is gona help me for sure!
G Day Mark, I hope you get something from it.
sure am mate!
Is that tvo in that fuel bowl Lance @bundybearsshed
No just premium unleaded probably old fuel.
You can trade the green thing in now. You have a far better piece complete with 3 point linkage
lol.
How do you ascertain if your TE20 is Delco or Lucas System?
Lucas has it on the tag on the distributor, I believe the Delco does as well.
Bundy Bears Shed thanks for replying Lance I recon it would be a very satisfying especially when you see a tractor in that condition and restore it back to new like you have done before, great job John
muy bien gracias
what about setting the points????
That was covered in Ferguson TED20 Barn Find Lets get it Going part 4, I completely overhauled the distributor in part 3 and 4. No need to do it again here.

now look ya looking i am left handed and bit thick i dare say u right so do a vid and show how me how it is ///let me dewell on it
Vocês emuito bão,
Thankyou.
Lmao, the hose wrapped wheel. :-D
Very high quality wheel that one lol.
In the end it is about getting it running correctly however you do it,
👍
👀 your water pump leak
Yep water pump leak and it has a new one now. Video on the way.
AAAAA when you open points you advance
But when you adjust points you should re set the timing or check it at least. Opening them can make it fire later.
Lol ,, spanner hammer 😊
I have a tool box full of them lol.
Thanks for the vid, just a bit confused. When you said after we have the screwdriver in the Flywheel and the points set to just opening you said to retard the distributor one line, but on my ted20 turning the distributor clockwise would advance the timing. Nick.
Yes I was backwards, I put a note in the description.
Very embarrassing when everything is set up and the engine will not start.
Can be but just have a look about and it will be obvious reasonably quickly.

You might need to understand how far back this video is, this was in the early days of the channel. You could possibly start a channel and show how it is done correctly. I would subscribe.
