Mine is 7 years old 9" still has his lines and spots on tail. I recommend feeding them shrimp pellets if they don't get protein they will start sucking the Slime off your fish killing them. If you change to a lighter substrate there lines and spots will come back.

@@miscmeme I have Siamese algae eater he’s 1 year old together with my cichlids. I’m feeding them blood worm every day and algae wafers. Put some pellets too. My algae eater don’t bother my cichlids at all. I’ll make sure I put enough food for everyone. Also feed them cichlids flakes. It won’t make your water cloudy.and put some cichlids staple too.😊❤️

I've got a 2 year old Chinese algae eater still bright colored with all the lines and spots who's been great. Gets a little annoyed with the mollies sometimes but has never hurt them. He's been a relatively independent healthy fish his whole life although he just started swimming in circles on a specific spot of the glass a few days ago and can't seem to figure out why.

My Chinese Algae Eater became very territorial from about 4 inches in size and even though I never witnessed any latching first hand, my Angelfish became covered in sores and scars. Will never but this fish again.

I've had a single Chinese algae eater twice in my life. Both times they got aggressive, harassed and wounded other fish. They are crazy hard to catch out of a heavily planted tank. I'm not a fan of this fish based on my own experience. I did enjoyed your video though. Cheers.

Yeah, I prefer the bristlenose plecos myself even though I've found my super reds not to be that great about eating the algae off of the glass as much as they eat it off of my live plants. But then too, a lot of it's on me as I feed them Repashy, Sera O' Nips, Romaine Lettece, cucumbers, zucchini & sweet potatoes. Yeah, I'm one of those people I spoil them big time :)

Love these fish and have nearly always kept one or more in most of my tanks over the years. They have strong personalities and it can be especially enjoyable watching them express this through harmless squabbles with similarly strong willed fish such as Red Tailed Black Sharks, etc. I have observed some potentially harmful aggression with these fish, whereby they attempt to attach to the sides of slow moving flat sided fish such as angel fish. Such aggression has only been occasional in my own experience, but I generally wouldn't advise keeping this fish with slow moving, flat sided or disc shaped fish such as angelfish or discus or maybe gourami's. Other than that, this is a great fish that gets an unfairly harsh and bad press...

Finally a species profile on the Chinese Algae Eater that I agree with. We have a 6" Golden Chinese named Goldspot and he is one great fish. Sure he chases Cory's out of his house and vacation cabin but its their fault. We have signs up posted "No Trespassing" and Goldspot Lives Here". If the Cory's chose to ignore the signs Goldspot puts them in their place. As to algae eating Goldspot is a little dynamo. He is continuously on a leaf or a piece of driftwood munching away. All that and he is absolutely hilarious to watch. Just a wonderful fish but not one for everybody. Jason made some excellent points and it would be wise to heed them.

My CAE is my sole cleaner (He is awesome) of my 4 bare bottom tank, every time his job is done or gone aggressive in my goldfish tank, I transfer him to My Cichlid Butti Tank for behavioral in check and teaching him who is the boss in that tank(CAE go timid), after that I bring him back to my goldfish tanks to continue his job for few days.

At about four years they still scrub the tank of algae. I made a video a couple weeks ago but the audio was quite poor. Thank you for this video, I really think these fish unfairly get hated.

If they spend all day shooting around the tank, they're looking for places to hide..
I've got one who was an absolute terror in a 50g set-up. I've got him in the 30g at the moment, with much more rocks and driftwood for him to hide in. All the aggression is completely gone.

I have moved him out of my community tank and moved him to a 37l tank on his own. I am hoping he will be ok on his own as nobody else wants him and I am not risking him with any other fish. I got 2 of these 3 weeks ago at my local petshop together with some pearlscales and fantails. They were around an inch long and were sold to me as ancistrus. However, their behaviour did not match the species temperament so I did some research on the net and i've discovered that there are chinese algae eaters, needless to say i'm horrified at the result. The gold one is particularly aggressive, already killed one of my pearlscales (i've noticed tear ups in his slime before it died) and relentlesly attacks all the other fish in the tank. I have to get a bigger tank (around 65 gallons) to house them now. At this point, i think they are a menace but i'm willing to give them a proper chance. Please, can you suggest some suitable tankmates for them because i'm at a loss. They are pretty aggressive for such a young age and they whole slime thing, they definitely do it!

I have a golden one about 4" and he is gorgeous. He lives in a 70 gallon with fast moving fish. He doesn't hurt or bother anybody else in the tank. We make sure to feed him every couple days. When he is hungry he is quite a character. He swims up to the glass and sits on the rock looking directly at me. We cook a piece of cucumber to put in the tank for him and he loves it. At his size, if he wasn't fed regularly I think he might starve as he can't survive just on algae.

    • @ksa5128
      @ksa5128 5 лет назад

My golden was an awesome fish to watch ! Strong swimmer! With funny habits. I can tell you this fish likes short fast bursts of energy. They are active fish so they need room I think that's where some agression comes in. They dont like being obstructed. Do not pair with slow moving fish. That being said He never bothered my balas or turquoise rainbows.

Ugh how fast do they grow and when do they really start to get aggressive???
I made a massive mistake and feel like the worst fish keeper. I've only been in the hobby for a year so I always research my fish before I get them, but I made a huge mistake and didn't this time, and went to petco (closest fish store in the area) because i needed/ wanted a good algae eater, and the guy told me my CAE was a siamese algae eater, and I told him I have a very heavily planted 29 gallon tank and told him my 16 little nano community fish and 3 little corys i had and he said it was fine. I've had him a few months and he's probably 4inches, and maybe shows some aggression? which is maybe pounce quick in front of a cory here and there if it gets in his little area, but the cory ignores him and he does nothing. I've never seen him acknowledge my little tetras. However, I feel awful that I took petco for their word without first looking up the fish he said it was and put him in my tank since it's not an appropriate environment for him. I deeply care for my. animals. I only have rescue dogs, and spend so much time caring for my aquarium fish and plants to grow and be responsible fish keeper. I finally found a aqautic specialty store about 30-45 minutes from and they said if I needed they would take him. I would have never got him if I knew, I feel so badly for the guy if he's stressed and want him to be taken care of properly in the best environment for him. So I most likely will have to bring him to the aquatics store so he has a chance for a quality little life.

I recommend otocynclis over the CAE if you want less potential aggression. My CAE is so hyper and a lot of fun to watch but I definitely notice it likes to chase fish around so I can see where it could get hectic as it grows
So far is going well and I’m ok with losing some shrimp and replenishing as they are cheap. With the red or blue cherry shrimp id be more careful w tank mates as they’re more expensive

    • @PrimeTimeAquatics

We have good luck catching some faster fish when we either just turn the lights on and they aren't fully adjusted to the light. The other thing you can do is turn on a light in the room, but not the tank and use a dark colored net. Finally, if he'll go into a cave structure like many do, put a piece of PVC in the tank with one end capped - if he goes in there put a net over the open side and lift the whole thing out. Hope one of these things work for you!

I have 8 goldfish in a 110 gal stock tank that has NO algae, not to mention a lake carp
I caught last year & it's in with the goldfish & all are doing great together in there.
I MIGHT put the 2 algae eaters in the stock tank when they get bigger but as of now
they are just babies & doing fine keeping the algae off the plants in the 30 long 👍

I love my Chinese algae eaters. But be wary if you have more than one male in the same tank one will grow and the other one won’t, I had to seperate my small algae eater into my 20 litre to stop my big one bullying him. So if your gonna get a Chinese algae eaters I’d recommend only getting one because you can’t tell male to female.

I am ashamed to say I lost my first algae eater because I did not take into account that their length was not a deterrent to them being eaten if the predator catches them from the front or back. Second one I got was much older and about 4 inches long, as fat as a £1 coin and he has settled in beautifully. I feed him shrimp pellets and protein enhanced betta bites along with the algae from the tank and the occasional cory pellet / spirulina wafer and he has not hurt any of my fish, though at his old home he did a lot of damage to a couple of danios.
