- Lisa Gade reviews the Sony Xperia Tablet S Android tablet. This is Sony's second gen Android Tablet with a 9.4" TruBlack 1280 x 800 display, 1.4GHz quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU with GeForce graphics and an IR blaster AV remote. It has an 8MP rear camera, 1MP front camera, a full size SD card slot, Bluetooth 3.0 and a dual band GPS. It weighs 1.26 lbs. and is slimmer than the original Tablet S. Sony never mentions GPS for the first and second gen Tablet S. According to GPS Status and GPS Tracker, there is indeed a GPS and the Xperia Tablet S gets a fix on 3 to 5 satellites indoors and 7 to 8 outside.

Yes, I have the same problem with WiFi disconnecting (though it takes an hour and not a minute like yours). Regardless of advanced WiFi settings. And after sleeping overnight, it flails trying to turn WiFi on. I just toggle airplane mode to get it working again. Hopefully Sony will improve this with a firmware update.
I can't wait to review that Vaio Duo 11! It's the quintessential Sony product-- so cool.
I just randomly found this video since I'm looking into tablets atm (my last one broke), but it is REALLY nice to see someone who actually knows what they are talking about and can answer questions. Like&Subscribe
Depends on how much like like the Transformer's keyboard dock. The Sony has so far been more stable with none of the slow I/O issues that trouble the Transformers. But the TF300 will get OS updates much quicker than the Sony.
We haven't been able to get a hold of Sony's new USB host adapter, so we couldn't test NTFS hard drives and the like.
There are so many very good free file managers on the Google Play Store, that I tend to worry little about what the manufacturer provides. Sony provides the same file transfer app as on the last gen tablet.
SD card contents appear in apps like Gallery so you can use it for expansion.
Sony has not provided a date for Jelly Bean.
The tablet doesn't come with Flash Player and Adobe now hides it on the Google Play Store. I'm afraid it will become irrelevant for non-power users who won't know how to get Flash onto their brand new Android. For those who don't know: use a computer web browser to access the Play Store and search for Flash there. Then you can send it to your device.
Photos taken with a dSLR in JPEG format will display on the tablet.

For drawing I'd definitely get something with an active digitizer and digital pen like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1.
As ive heard, you cant use the SD slot as a +memory on the tablet, its just a read-only slot for watching music or videos, but not writing data on it..
I love your reviews im a big fan, but could you perhaps just add one thing in the future when you review stuff ? To make i absolutely perfect when you mention specifications and/or functions it would very to have it in writing on the video in some sort of grafic it would make so much easier to remember and follow because it can get a little confusing with all the infomation at once going a little fast when you'r speaking :)
Social Life works, but it does tend to crash in the background every day or so. I don't know why Sony has so much trouble with their social networking app's stability. The rest of their apps are perfectly solid.

This I think is the underdog in the android tablet market. Its got such a great unique design, got some cool features, and is very simple like a sony product should be.
Hi, I checked this out at the store and I was quite surprised by how well the launcher handles (framerate). It was not sluggish at all.
Also I didnt know that Sony implemented multi user and the other features, this is actually very good, as most large tablets are bound to the couch. It's also much cheaper than the competition. I think it actually looks good and the metal feels good. They should make the fold deattachable.. Then it would be near perfect.
Using the Xperia tablet, is comes up for me in the market when I search for "watch now sony".

Go on Amazon and read one review, the reviewer says that in Advanced WIFI Options there is a setting to make sure it doesn't disconnect while going to sleep.
Yes, glass. The older model is also glass but coated with a very discreet factory layer of screen protector, so most people assume that it is plastic. It feels like plastic but once the layer is taken off, its is glass underneath. I know coz i own one.
I bought this recently. Though I need to mention that, for the 16 Gb version, only 10 Gb is available to the user, and moving apps to the SD card is currently imossible. Every app will install in the internal memory.
Guest mode sets access to apps, it doesn't create a virtual environment with virtual file systems. You and your kids have access to the same Angry Birds saves.

Sony Xperia S is the one for me - It´s just so great universal remote to all of my Home Theatre Systems. And it´s easy to program the macros that I need.
The sony Xperia Z tablet is coming but I like the way how the Xperia S curves backside and how it is so much easier to hold.

I have an iPad but i'm drooling all over this. It is not just an Android Tablet,it's a Sony,with fully "Sony" personalized Android,unlike the rest which assemble Androids close to the Original look and feel which are pissing me OFF!!!

I'd say the new Xperia Tablet S is better than the first Tablet S.
You CAN write/download to the SD card, after updating the tablet to the latest firmware. Though it's still impossible to move apps to the SD card. And every app will install on the internal memory.

Frederick, I dont agree. If i am about to pay this kind of money for a tablet i want as much information on it as possible. I think Lisa's review are great because they (as far as I have seen so far) cover the bits we need to know about. Some other reviewers will spend half the review talking about say ICS and thats not what I want to know. I want to know about the extra and all the little things that others running ICS dont have. Suprised she never mentioned the wifi issue though in main review
Got mine last Monday (Sept 10) and first thing I notice is this wifi bug.. I tried to enable airplane mode that would stop it from auto turn on the wifi but that didnt work. Tweak setting to prevent sleeping but that "work around" is if you plugged in your charger. in short, there's no way for you to disable sleeping or stop it from disconnecting wifi on specified amount of time until they fixed this bug. Anyway, restarting is the quick way to restore wifi than waiting for it to reconnect.

The tablet looks good, but to me, there's not really anything that stands out to me. You can get the remote feature with the Samsung galaxy tab 7" 2. I like the great contrast, but they played it too safe, not making it full HD. I'm more excited for the kindle fire 8.9... How I wish Google had made a 10" Nexus with expandable memory and HDMI out.
This, the bigger screen and range of accessories make this a nicer buy, it also has a bit more of a premium feel to it and has that SD card slot that the Nexus 7 lacks - The Xperia tablet S also has an update to Jelly bean promised :) Hope this helps!
Definately - Xperia Tablet S is aluminium and the folded design makes it much nicer to hold that the TF300, while maintaining a more premium feel! I would get this instead!

Awesome review, very informative and well made. One thing though, why would you openly compare something physically with an Apple product at this day and age? ;D
Also, I think the removable plastic cover for the port at the bottom is a nice idea (as long as you don't leave it uncovered all the time), the ones connected by rubber strands (like the PSP memory stick port) are quite obtrusive.
Hi Lisa, usually in your reviews you mention other useful info also, like:-
1. Is there a dedicated file manager, how is it.
2. NTFS support for external storage.
3. SD card can be used for memory expansion or just file transfer.
4. JB update, if you have any info on JellyBean update.

It's a nice thing to have though i doubt that this is what android tablets really need to compete, i think optimization for a faster and smoother experience is something that all android tablets need, and project butter for JB on the nexus 7 was a good start :)
Hello Lisa, I love your reviews they are so great. Congratulations for that. This tablet looks nice!, great design and good software. I love gaming and it looks pretty good for games, right? I have a question: I heard on another review that this tablet's respond is slow, it takes up to 10 seconds to wake it when in Sleep mode, and it lags, could you tell me if that's true? This is very good tab. But people only talk about ipad and galaxy tabs. This is very under rated premium tab with needs more attention
Thats what i meant, for example a tegra 3 game is ~1gb big, thats basically 10% of the memory you have on the 16 gb version..

Its the main standard for entry level. PPI is really important, people are using tablets to read ebooks. The standard was brought up by newer tablets, like the infinity, A700, and Ipad. If its near the 500 price tag, then it needs to have the best available specs to date. That's how it works.
This does not play games compiled for the PS3.

It's only a slight improvement in my opinion. I have the first generation and the only difference I see is that it's thinner. Had Sony improved the resolution and ended their proprietary connection fixation, I would definitely upgrade. I just can't justify paying 500 bucks for this when Amazon has a better resolution screen for 300 bucks!

Hi Lisa, I know I have been commenting quite a bit on your videos for opinions on what tablet is the best to get and the best value for money. What tablet would you recommend for best for drawing on, camera, performance and durability? I have my eye on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 at the moment. But would like your opinion
Both have the same app functionality - as both run on Android, an advantage of the Note would be the pen, but ask yourself is it worth spending the extra money on just having a pen? Both will have the same apps as concerns business orientated productivity though, the Xperia Tablet S also has a more premium feel to it, and I would also check out getting the leather keyboard case to go with it for working on the go - something the note 10.1 lacks.
Yap that was the problem of honeycomb...with new ICS you can play directly the content on the device.. Plus you can play the content in old also...officially they are denying but we try it's work well...
The problem with android tablets is google doesn't control who uses the os thus fast forwarding fragmentation but this tablet looks ok but obviously if they really want to fight the iPad they should make a vaio tablet with windows 8 and an intel CPU
1080p is more than enough for 10 inch tablets, You don't need to surpass a product in every element of hardware to compete with it, And apple has proven that already... The experience is what it's all about, people care about specs, that's true but the majority will be going for a certain brand, look, feel or features.
Now there is no denying that a high res screen is a point of attraction, but still there is really not that much games or applications that will really utilize those extra pixels.

The ipad is able to sync to video camera's so you can view what's coming off the camera, do you think this sony tablet has an app to do that as well? I love your show.
The only thing I do not like, its screen resolution. Wish it would be 1920 x 1200 or higher

Hello. I've been searching for the best tablet i can afford and my selection ended with the Asus TF300T and the Sony Xperia Tablet S. Choosing one of the two is being extremely difficult, since i'm concerned most of all with performance and durability. Sony's seems sturdier, but the wifi issue's and other performance problems are bugging me. The Asus seems great, but the lack of IPS and not so resistant screen bother me. Please, let me know your opinion on the matter. Thanks in advance.
wanting Asus TF700T Tablet,no luck(UK). Although I know this one is not up to the TF700T standards it has a lot going for it which are the little extra's Sony has included. Things like Xperia gaming,Small Apps,Guest Mode, IR Blaster and app looks amazing and the social widget looks cool.
Biggest upsets for me are no full HD, no dedicated USB which means expensive adaptors. By the time I buy these it will bring the unit up to the price of the Asus TF700T. Does this output full HD through adaptor?

Between the Samsung galaxy 10.1 and the Xperia tablet, which is best to have in university lectures? I'd most likely be using a keyboard for notes and not the pen, and I like the idea of the case also being used as a keyboard, however I saw from your other review that the galaxy had some really good note writing options.. :S I'd love to hear what you would recommend!

Yes it does. 1280x800 is last year's res standard. I can get that res, on a nexus 7 for 200 dollars. So for about 400 dollars I expect 1080p. More Resolution, sharper text and who doesn't want that ?

No. There's only so much you can put in a comment before no one reads it. I meant that 1280x800 was last year's standard. Ipad brought the standard up. The 1080p displays bring the gap closer in terms of resolution. I can get 1280x800 in a nexus 7 and a tab 7.7 under 300 dollars. So at 400 dollars of the Sony tablet s I expect a 1080 display.
You sure? Android had the slide down bar from the top of their screen first, but apperently apple came out with that during the iphone 4s, I would know because i had a android device before i got myself and iphone 4s.
Some people saying they having wifi issue. Anybody encountered this?? I ordered mine and waiting for it.
