You prefer Simone's chest voice over her head voice (operatic)? That might change over time if you learn a bit about it. Almost all singers use their chest voice (and we all use it when we're speaking), but most singers don't use their head voice. That requires a classical training. For me, it's much more special. Yes, it's impressive to see singers do powerful belting, but that will eventually take a toll on their vocal cords. That's why voices of opera singers don't deteriorate over time that much. The technique is very different and their voices last longer. It's also a beautiful sound. You can definitely learn how to appreciate it. When some symphonic metal band has a classically trained soprano, that's immediately a big bonus point for me. But there are not many such bands, and then, most of them don't have musical compositions that are anywhere near to those of Epica. This band is just phenomenal.
I didn't really consider "Unleashed" very uplifting, for me it's a stunning but sad song, but that may be just me. 🙂
If you want something even more uplifting, do this:
EPICA - Beyond The Matrix - Live at the Zenith (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
    and one more:
EPICA - A Phantasmic Parade (OFFICIAL EUROPEAN PRINCIPLE TOUR AFTERMOVIE)
If you want Simone using only her chest voice (pop-rock sound) without the operatic head voice, you can do some of heir more radio-friendly songs:
EPICA - Storm The Sorrow (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
EPICA - Never Enough (Dark) HQ HD 4K

The name of the band is perfect. Every single song is top level. I began my metal journey at the beginning of the pandemic.
I'm still amazed that this band is not known in the US.
Tickets for the Sabaton/Epica concerts are less than $50 for the upcoming shows.
Having started in music with bands like Procol Harum, ELP, and Yes, this is the perfect progression of the genre. Continue to enjoy.

    Design Your Universe
Storm The Sorrow (Simone makes the densest mix ever her bitch)
    The Divine Conspiracy
But the entire show is awsome, Simone is pregnant, far enough along to have a good baby bump, and still slaying.

  • @rnowak85

Nice reaction. One of my favorites and I think a much better introduction to Epica then Consign to Oblivion. First is the wall of sound from a full live orchestra and choir. Second is Simone's more varied singing and the fact that she is the center for the whole song. In Consign to Oblivion she kind of disappears for half the song. Third is the gorgeous melodies and arrangements that the band has created. Your spot on about how amazing the sound engineering was to get such a perfect mix. As other's have mentioned the keyboardist, Coen, is one of the original band members and used to have hair as here but is now bald, as I will be in about 5 years. Watched the 20th anniversary concert on the livestream and it was amazing. The audio and video was spectacular and we were treated to some early Epica when they performed as Sahara Dust (band's first name) including a number of songs that hadn't been performed live in decades plus a brand new song from their upcoming album. Like Retrospect the show was over 3 hours long. Best eighteen dollars I have ever spent. Hopefully they will be releasing a DVD or some of the songs on their YT channel.

Awesome reactions! Just subscribed. Another couple of bands that doesnt get nearly enough love are Beast in Black and Temperance. Temperance gets almost zero in fact. Great uplifting symphonic metal band, maybe not as complex as Nightwish or Epica but they know how to put together a great song. My personal favorite is "Pure Life Unfolds." I like the Heavy Metal orchestra mix. There’s one Heavy Metal band I’d like to see do a Metal/Orchestra album together with about 20/25 songs.
I know if KISS can do KISSYMPHONY with the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scorpions can do Moment of Glory with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, I’d love to hear the Heavy Metal 🐐🐐🐐🐐 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. That’s right Iron Maiden with a 20-25 song set. 🤘🏼🤘🏼UpTheIrons🤘🏼🤘🏼

I hope you don't mind some harsh male vocals here and there. Epica use this duality of "beauty and the beast" in most of their songs.
Their first song from 2002, Cry For the Moon, here performed in a 2004 live TV studio session.
Simone was just 19 at the time and her head voice (operatic) sounded quite differently from later years. What a beautiful voice and a beautiful woman! And of course, a beautiful song.
EPICA - Cry for the Moon (We Will Take You With Us-OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO)
Here, their seventh album from 2016, a song with quite unusual song structure and sci-fi lyrics:
EPICA - Universal Death Squad (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)
Here, a more radio-friendly song from 2012, and very cool video too (Simone's dirtiest filming)
EPICA - Storm The Sorrow (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
      and
Epica Storm The Sorrow (Acoustic version) Pinkpop 2014
The second one will show you how they can transform their great metal songs into great acoustic versions. They've done that with multiple songs. It shows how great musicians they are.
Here's something heavier from 2009, the fourth album:
Epica - Semblance of Liberty (Lyrics)
And a wonderful emotional ballad from the same year, same album:
Epica - Tides Of Time (lyrics) - please, find a fan-made video by Elimeleh69
Here, two ballads in just one video, again 2004:
Epica - Run For a fall 🎼 Solitary Ground live (2004)
And at least one of their longer epic masterpieces, something from 2021
EPICA - KINGDOM OF HEAVEN PT 3 - (ΩMEGA ALIVE) (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
I can give you more later, if you wish. Just didn't want to inundate you with too many links. 😉
