    The Garwood House in Malibu (1972-2022) was best known as the house that was owned by Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin from 2014 till 2022. Martin decided to demolish the house and to recplace it for another luxury mansion. Although the house was changed many times and therefore deviaded greatly from Lautner's original design, it was still an interesting home. Based on my own drawings and photos found on the internet, I made this reconstruction. To preserve John Lautner's legacy and to enjoy the beauty of his work!

      In Germany it would not be allowed to destroy such buildings because of the „Denkmalschutz“ (Monument Protection?). And I think that is the right way to keep such beautiful national heritage alive. It is also not allowed to change fundamental thing even it is your house.

It seems to be in too good a location to not have a home on it. I'd love to see what/if, someone will build in the future there. I'm glad that the pathway to the beach remains. A new much larger luxury mansion will be build on the property: it will take some years before the house will be finished, and when I made this video only the empty building site was there. I guess Martin wanted a bigger house on the same amazing location. If the Garwood was placed on another location it wasn't demolished. I agree that the beach pathway is one of the best aspects of the house, so luckily that has survived.

    Another great tour Jop. Thank you for cataloging a property that would otherwise never see the light. It is a shame the actual construction deviated so much from the original plans. It's amazing how much of Lautner's genius shines despite the changes rather than because of them. All of the most interesting aspects are very much Lautner. I'm undecided on the demolition. As a Lautner design it is possible that it was demolished long before the walls came down. And that easement to the beach; an experience in and of itself. Great work!

    • @insidiousengineering
      @insidiousengineering 10 месяцев назад +4

      After more review, the demolition of this Lautner design definitely started at the original construction. Whether bad taste, or the reality of life caused this, it's an incomplete Lautner. Really. What they did Lautner's roof was awful. It is however a huge testament that Lautner's genius was still present. Money no object? I say demolish the tennis court (a literal gold mine opportunity) and restore the house to the original design with careful review of interior walls and doors.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  10 месяцев назад +2

      You're welcome! I like to show the houses to the public that otherwise will get no attention.
      - I'm agree with you that the house had some features that showed the genius by Lautner, yet at the same time the house was messed up as well: lot of changes to the original design and multiple remodellings. The roof construction with the large windows is typical for Lautner. But the hallways from the kitche,, in front of a bedroom with no windows, would never be a choice by Lautner, as well as the studio room with now windows in the walls and only a few skylights.
      - I think its still a waste that the house was demolished: it could have been restored very close to Lautner's original vision.
      - The easement to the beach is indeed an amazing experience, fortunate it's still exisiting, I don't know if the pathway as designed by Lautner or some other garden architect.

      An entire reconstruction would also be a great option. Lautner's houses are best appreciated by experiencing them from the inside. Pictures can't convey the three dimensional magic that his spaces have but sometimes pictures are all there is. The photos that I used in the video were of the latest version of the house, the final version before the house was torn down. These photos were taken in 2014 when the house was for sale: it was then bought by Paltrow and Martin, they did t change much to the house before Martin demolished it in 2022. There weren't any available photos of the previous versions of the house, because the Garwood family owned the property between 1972 and 2014 and they did not allow any pictures. So I could not include any photos of the early versions. Nobody knows what phases the house went through, but we do know that the house was changed multiple times. When you look at t Lautner's original drawings you see enormous differences.

    This one didn't wow me like his others. I can see why it wasn't considered one of his good designs. It seemed strangely cramped. It was oddly laid out - you had to walk through the kitchen to get to the master bedroom? - and not nearly as infused with natural light as his others. Perhaps the revisions and later remodels ruined it.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  10 месяцев назад +3

      This was one of the lesser designs by Lautner because the remodeling ruined it! Take a close look at Lautner's floor plan , ..in the beginning of the video....and you see that the original lay out was much different and better. The latest version of this house was in many ways different from Lautner and it was very cramped and oddly. still it had some great qualities.

    Years ago I watched a video by a professor in architecture and he related how at the start of one of his classes that he showed a picture of the great pyramid and other buildings, big, small and some still existing and others long gone. He said that they all had one thing in common and that was sooner or later everyone one of them was going to come down and be gone. His point is that we should except the inevitable loss of these beautiful structures.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  10 месяцев назад +2

      Interesting but I don't know if that's true: the Piramides are still standing for 5000 years and the will stand for a long time. Off course everything will end someday.... But I think some great homes deserve to stay for many decades or centuries. We should more carefully maintain our history, heritage and legacy.

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  7 месяцев назад +1

      No, at this moment the building lot is still empty. But in a year or so, a large luxury mansion will be built on the vacant lot. Off course it will be a hosue much larger than this Lautner design. That's how it goes with most mid century modernist masterpieces: they are considered to small for todays standards while the location is still beautifull. So many rich people, who have a lot of money but no taste, destroy the houses and place insanely large houses on the beautifull location.

  • @NM-dx6zw

    This certainly does't look like a star architects work. The plan is very messy and does't have any logic. Bedroom 2 doesn't have any windows!?! Also the "studio" which has exterior wall doesn't have windows. Interior is very restless and not just because of the furniture. Of course it's not from 40s'-60s' but I think this house was a waste of gorgeous site. The more I watch this video the more the building looks like it was drawn a child. It's not a crime it was demolished

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  4 месяца назад +1

      The reason why it's floorplan is so unlogical is because it's changed multiple times and therefore it derrives strongly from Lautner's original design. So John Lautner can't be blamed for this. I agree with you that it was messy, but still I think it was possible to bring back the house into it's original condition. Like was done with Lautner's 1st Harpel House, which was also messy before the restoration. But I can understood why Chris Martin thought: ''okay it's to difficult, expensive and to time consuming to restore so lets built something else!''

  • @Piecenotwar
    @Piecenotwar 10 месяцев назад

    I don’t have a problem with it being demolished, there’s only a few houses I would say are of architectural significance they are worth keeping, the rest bulldoze them if you want, it’s a nice home but I suppose even if you renovate it you’ll loose whatever home it was initially anyway.
    Smash it down and build new 😊

    • @SuperJobbel
      @SuperJobbel  10 месяцев назад +3

      Well, yes sometimes its better to start all over again, but in this case I think that it was still possible to bring back the house to John Lautner's original vision.
