I saw Angela Lansbury (in London) and Patti LuPone (Broadway) as Mama Rose as well, and all three were excellent, but Tyne Daly was my favorite: down-to-earth and electrifying at one and the same time. And she was lovely in another Merman role in "Call Me Madam" at Encores. And she's really wonderful here, thanks for posting!
As a 75 year old, that last song really hurts. With Ms Daly in that role, the show would fly to the heavens. Shes so much much more than Cagny and Lacy. Gosh
It is wonderful that Tyne Daly took relived the theatrical moments of the song and squeezed every nuance of thought and feeling that the material had to offer. Oh, wouldn't she be wonderful in a revival of this troubled work? What we see here is pure magic. I feel as though I've peeked inside the mad woman's soul for a brief while.
She did a tiny production at York Theater, NYC a few years back, and she was just this sweet and charming. I didn't see the Broadway production but I suspect smaller is better.
Beautifully done, a master class. Todays musical theatre actors should take note- and learn from this performance and her. It’s not always about screaming through your nasal cavity. Tyne is lovely in this.
Tim (Daly) was on my first Little League team, in Suffern, in 1966. Tyne would come and watch some of the games. She was the quintessential 1966 girl. Tall, thin, long straight hair parted in the middle, jeans, sandals. We won our Division, and our Championship best 2 out 3. The end of season celebration was at their home on Montebello Road. 😎😎😎
You never cease to amaze me with footage that is so rare I didn't even know it existed! In spite of its beautiful and dramatic score, the songs from "Dear World" are not performed that often. What a treat to see/hear Tyne Daly. Of course she was great on "Cagney & Lacey" (along with Sharon Gless and the entire series). And I was fortunate enough to see her tour de force turn as Mama Rose in "Gypsy." So seeing this performance was a treat. But if you come up with actual footage of Angela Lansbury in Dear World" I might drop dead from a heart attack! 🎭
This lady is not a very nice person. We had an opportunity to know when she played in "GYPSY" at the Muny Theatre in St. Louis, MO about twenty years or so ago.
I would disagree. Lansbury line readings on the OBC as well as her phrasing on lyrics is completely different. Also, Lansbury made no attempt at a French accent.
