Lake Doxa | Escape to the "Corinthian Paradise"
The lake doxa is an artificial lake at an altitude of 900 meters, which is located in the Feneo region of Corinth, at the foot of Mount Pentelia (Dourdouvanas) and Aroanion (Chelmou) near the settlements of Archaia Feneo (Kalyvia) and Panorama (Fonia) and at a short distance from the Monastery of Agios Georgios, and it is 8 to 10 kilometers by road from Goura.
The construction of the dam was completed in the late 1990s and the lake is formed by water flowing from the mountains above. It got its name Doxa from the small river that started from the area and ended in sinkholes near Mount Saita, in the South of the Feneos plateau. But the same area was also known as "Stou Doxa". The river and the area must have taken the name Doxa from a settlement with the same name that existed in the area.
In ancient times this river was called Aroanios, and it is also referred to as Anias. The purpose of the construction of the dam was to irrigate the Feneos plateau.
In the area of ​​the lake there used to be the Monastery of Agios Georgios, which towards the end of the 17th century was moved northwest and higher to its current location. However, the small church of this monastery was preserved, which was known as the old monastery and today, after the construction of the dam, it has taken the name of Agios Fanourios. This small church is located in the South on the edge of the Lake and communicates with the land by a narrow strip of land.
Feneos, with its unique Lake Doxa, has been labeled "Corinthian Switzerland", since the lake is located between the Ziria and Helmos mountains, reminiscent of alpine landscapes and lakes, while the villages that surround it are truly beautiful.
The villages of Feneos:
- Goura : The largest village in the area, with a beautiful stone-built square, is located on the western slopes of Ziria, with mansions from the 19th century, they are historical monuments.
- Mosia: The first village one encounters upon arriving in the area.
- Kalyvia : Ancient Feneos with many attractions and things to see.
- Messino: A village where you can take a breather, enjoy your food or your coffee.
- Syvista : With the unique church of Agios Spyridon.
- Panorama : As its name suggests, a village with an amazing view, at 1000 meters altitude.
