There are several other places that you can find the VIN stamped into the metal on these cars too. It's been a long time, but I remember doing this for a friend who's 66 SS396 trim and VIN tags were stolen while his car was at a body shop to have a new roof skin put on. I know in 1972 that there's a stamped VIN behind the heater core (or A/C unit) on the firewall in the engine compartment, the door jams firewall side, the trunk passenger side under the weather stripping, and the drivers side rear frame rail behind the wheel. Thank you for the Awesome content you provide to us viewers!! I can't wait for the next video!!!
6:39 Holy cow, Steve is right again! Here my whole life I thought those 6-slot Rally wheels first appeared on 71 Chevelles and Novas. 70 Camaro SS was the first year after all. Wow, this dude knows his stuff!
I see the body tag is missing, no mention if the Vin plate was still there in the door pillar. The 3rd digit on the vin would be a 7 for 6 cyl or 8 for v8. Love these junkyard videos!

Should of kept it , but my friend still owns it and its a drag strip car so he barly drives it... ive owned a 64 malibu since 82 with the same drive train so im still bangin gears lol... thanks for sharing
When we were kids back in the 70's my friend and I saw a guy stop his 1964 Chevelle 4 speed on Walker Ave in Burnaby BC. He revved it up and dumped the clutch and did this massive 84 yard long burnout (we paced off the length of the two strips of rubber). I don't think it was a 6 cylinder lol. I still remember the engine sound and smell of tire smoke. Many people opened their house front doors and looked down the street. It was like a cartoon. Thanks for another great video Steve!
Yes, correct. A lot of folks don't know that a SS could be had with a six cylinder. In some years, it was more appearance than performance. Of course as time went on, SS meant performance as well as appearance. Looks like it was possible code "R" Regal Red exterior paint.
@@kylekyleson373 Owned a '62, 3sp/6cyl (not a SS). Did own a bronze '64 SS Nova, 4sp car. Somebody had dropped a 327/300hp engine in it. I'm a big fan of the Chevy II/Nova. Back in the day some buds owned '70 396/375 Novas, oh yeah
Years ago my girlfriend and I were at a World of Wheels here in Atlanta. I see a yellow/black vinyl top '65 Chevelle. Yep, Dan Blocker's (Bonanza) Z16. It was roped off but the owner "do you want to sit in it"? Not sure if I was making motor noises when I went thru the gears, sure wanted to. Saw a couple Z16s at the Kissimmee Mecum Auction a couple years ago. Amazing cars
I still remember driving a 1965 Chevelle, 327, 4spd, bench seat, 2dr ht, back in 1968. It was red, with red interior, and was sitting on the local Chevy used car lot. I was 17, and wanted my dad to give the OK for me to buy it. That didn't happen... I ended up (a few months later) with a used 1967 Corvair Monza (110hp, 4spd) instead. Which I loved, none the less. But that's a story for another day.
I've always been sort of an outside admirer of the Corvairs, especially the vans. Never owned one. But I travel our roads and freeways a lot and I'm starting to see them quite often. I guess it's safe to say that we're seeing a Corvair resurgence of sorts. I speak only for myself, and it was during the late 80's thru early 2000's that I mostly saw them parked, being parted out or more often than not, in a large hoard sitting in a field. One fellow that I worked for briefly back in 86-87 had about 15 or more, all parked out back at his business in Ensley Alabama. Many different types. That was 3 decades ago. Damn I'm getting old. 😐
@Hack I had a 1962 corvair Rampside bought it off my buddys Dad about 8 years ago. Sat in the backyard over 20 years. Put a new fuel tank in it from Clark’s Corvair. And rebuild the brake cylinders. Fired right up when I adjusted the timing. Had a lot of rust but ran great sold it about 5 years ago. Those air cooled vehicles can sit for years and you don’t have to worry about coolant corrosion.👍
When classic car shopping you need a guy like Steve with you. He can spot a fake in the blink of an eye no matter what length the previous owner went to make it look legit. Steve will always know what detail no matter how small to look for to prove a car is what it says it is.
Steve also of note that the original 64 Chevelle had the same 115 inch wheel base of the Tri-Five Chevies (55-57) and was meant to be the spiritual successor to those Tri-Five Belairs and 210s. I never had a Malibu but my first car I bought during my Senior Year of College was a 73 Chevelle Deluxe with the Turbo Hydromatic and 350 2 barrel which could lay rubber and then my first new car was a 77 Monte Carlo with swivel buckets and rally wheels which was basically an extended Chevelle. Both were good cars but I never owned a V8 car that ran as smooth and as quick as that 73 Chevelle which was a plain 4 door Colonnade with Chevy emblem hubcaps. It was a real sleeper but it had been a company oil drilling car broken in at high speeds on West Texas roads. The faster you drove it the smooth it ran especially at 100. It also had the coldest factory air which would frost the windows on a hot Houston Summer day. I purchased that Chevelle for $1,500 as a 2 year old high mileage car and drove it for 2 years and sold it for what I paid for it then bought the Monte new.
👍 At least the frame. Would be a great RatRod. Those quarter panels are pretty chewed up though. Would be worth it, maybe if it were the holy grail of Chevelle SS. Although we were a Ford family, my father’s business owned a ‘65 Chevelle SS396 that was prepared by Motion Performance, sponsored by his Goodyear franchise and successfully raced extensively on the East Coast. I remember it had aluminum bumpers and hood and I tried to convince him to let me take it to my senior prom. Needless to say that didn’t happen.
Hey Steve, I love your videos always have, I've looked and looked and can't find a video you've talked about the 47-54 chev and gmc trucks. I have a 51 GMC 3/4 ton from 🇨🇦 Canada.
I have both 64 and 65 Chevelle Malibu SS cars that I had restored. I'm now building a z16 clone car with a date code correct 396 engine and 4 speed. It will be painted black.
The Z-16 Chevelle had some unique bits the rear panel and grille were different plus badging, they were offered in only yellow and red, I mentioned I did a cable access show for 12 years in the Naugatuck valley, cruise night, well before I did the show you would once in a while bump into folks with not so nice attitudes, and snobby, well I walked up to a 1965 like this, it was a yellow genuine 396 vehicle from 65, I admired the guys car and tried to strike a conversation, well he would not budge or talk or even look up, I had my 3 kids in tow on their 57 Chevy go cart. So when I figured he was snooty I said to him he had a very nice car and you should not counterfeit rare and valuable cars, well he did look up, oh I did believe the car to be genuine, new subscriber love the presentation I’ll be back, oh how’s the 62 Dart? I recently bought my 127th car, an 88 T-bird sport coupe complete with 5.0 a one owner 70 thousand mile car
Steve, I love these videos even though I don’t like a lot of the cars you’re covering haha I will always watch to the end simply for the knowledge that you share I love that you cover the oddball cars I have a few oddball cars myself namely the Buick Century slant 78 to 81 as well as the Oldsmobile cutlass salon slant back same years I have yet to see you cover any of these or any Oldsmobile diesel, would love to see some!!
Back in that era the SS package was mostly about trim items. It was pretty common to see the plain-Jane Chevy II 6 cyl / 3 on the tree with bucket seats, extra chrome, and a two-tone paint job. That also meant it came standard with an AM radio, carpet, and exterior mirrors. I bought a well-used version of this for $1 (one dollar) in 1971 and it smoked like a bandit. Guessing the little old lady never changed the oil in 78K miles. In hindsight, I should have rebuilt the 6 banger instead of shoving an early small block in there.
An old guy down the road from me has a 65 SS in his shed. It’s all taken apart with the original 327 block minus the heads and intake sitting in the engine bay. The heads and intake are in the trunk. Not too rusty, but would require a full restoration. It’s got primer and surface rust all over. He’s still asking $10k🙄
People on YT are re-doing much worse cars as challenges (and to make videos), but they need a Vin tag of something worth doing. You can buy everything to rebuild that car from floor and trunk pans to fenders and doors. You find some super rare car that was wrecked, stripped, thrown out in the woods for 40 years while people shot it full of holes but has a vin or builders tag, you can build a whole car around that chunk of metal.
I guy I knew had a '65 Super Sport that he got when he was in high school in 1972 and kept it until he died, about 40 years. i think it was in '74 he changed the water pump on the 327 and forgot to tighten the fan bolts properly and the bolts stripped out when he was doing a seven grand hole shot and the fan imbedded its self in the hood slicing it open. he fixed the fan but never did anything about the scared hood.
Is that a XJ6 in the background??? It might be a Vanden Plas double 6. Of course the British called them a Daimler Sovereign 6 or double 6. I have pushed many a British car many a mile.... but still love them.
Only a 64 had chrome trim on the top of body line as you were pointing out on that 65 and a plain 65 would have chrome down the center of quarter door and back of fender .The console brackets do confirm that it was more than likely a 65 SS . Vin is also stamped on left frame rail on top under middle under trunk floor if one could remove that left area of trunk floor and clean top of frame . The original rear end is in the car one also could make an educated guess by the code stamp , gear ratio and size whether 10 or 12 bolt what the motor was . Trim tag and vin missing is a good indicator that someone might have used it on a non SS car to clone ecspecialy if it was a 138 car .If a Z16 car it would have an M on line 5 of trim tag if present .😀
I will tell you Steve their is a man named Cliff he has a z-16 65 chevelle Red with 50,000 miles on it he even still has the window papers on the window it is amazing he hasn’t touched it since I think 1975 sits in his garage with flat tires sad but it is all original he ordered it for factory by the way he lives in my home town in Kansas
The best indication that it's a real SS is the fact that the cowl tag is missing ... most likely so that someone could nefariously attach it to their restoration project to pass it off as a "real SS."
Great Job Steve I remember a magazine article from the day about a 1965 Chevelle with a Z-11 427 As I recall it was a factory one off example Do you have that in your library?
My 1981 Camaro came with the 3.8 or 3.0 V6 from the factory with those six slot stealys .scrapped’um when I made it a drag car, now I’m putting it back to the street and I’m 5 of the stainless slot inserts away from it being original(appearing).
My dad had a 65 Chevelle SS convertible when he ordered it the dealership said the biggest motor he could get was a 283 with a two barrel . So that is what he got he also got the Muncie 4 speed transmission . Very nice car . I never saw it he got rid of it in 1971 . He said it was time for him to grow up . He kicked himself for doing it & told me never grow up !! Be responsible but never grow up
@@artieb2168 my dad & I were very surprised to hear about all the options the 65 Chevelle SS convertible had . We figured the dealership sales man did not know or was in a hurry to sell a car . It was his favorite car . Still has the hubcaps from it

My first car right out of high school was a 1965 Chevy Chevelle Malibu SS. I was the third owner. I bought it for $675.00. It was Ermine White and the inside was that blue metallic that GM put in everything back in the 60's. A guy that I know has one white but the inside is black that's ok I can live with a black interior, but he won't sell it.
My best buddy bought a new '65 SS, 327/300 HP/4-speed. Maroon with grey bucket interior. It didn't have positraction and full-throttle blasts would smoke the right rear tire for hundreds of feet.
Considering only 201 z16's were made it's not a z16 until you prove it is. And the convertible frames weren't just boxed C frames the frame rails in the center are almost twice the width of a standard C frame rails with notches for floor clearance where the floor braces are.
Was waiting for him to show how many foot pedals... ? And at 1:18 the '65 396 cars didn't come with posi... although the magazine tester might have had it... they feel helpless without posi... can't get off the line...
The '64-'65 Chevelles were the least attractive of the first GM A-bodies. Compared to the Skylark, Cutlass, and Tempest/GTO it looks like the box it came in. Chevy really phoned it in.

I was more excited about the red Dodge T-Top Daytona next to it! 💯
People on YT are re-doing much worse cars as challenges (and to make videos), but they need a Vin tag of something worth doing. You can buy everything to rebuild that car from floor and trunk pans to fenders and doors. You find some super rare car that was wrecked, stripped, thrown out in the woods for 40 years while people shot it full of holes but has a vin or builders tag, you can build a whole car around that chunk of metal.
great video! is there a concealed vin number on a 65 by the heater box on the firewall?
I guy I knew had a '65 Super Sport that he got when he was in high school in 1972 and kept it until he died, about 40 years. i think it was in '74 he changed the water pump on the 327 and forgot to tighten the fan bolts properly and the bolts stripped out when he was doing a seven grand hole shot and the fan imbedded its self in the hood slicing it open. he fixed the fan but never did anything about the scared hood.
The saddest thing about the Z16 is that you couldn't get it with a posi rear. 😪
Is that a XJ6 in the background??? It might be a Vanden Plas double 6. Of course the British called them a Daimler Sovereign 6 or double 6. I have pushed many a British car many a mile.... but still love them.
Love the show. Did anyone notice the red Daytona/laser to the right of the malibu?
I can see that Turbo Z, most gorgeous car from the 80-90
Only a 64 had chrome trim on the top of body line as you were pointing out on that 65 and a plain 65 would have chrome down the center of quarter door and back of fender .The console brackets do confirm that it was more than likely a 65 SS .
With people changing everything on their cars these days how many original 6 cylinder SS cars are still out there?
I will tell you Steve their is a man named Cliff he has a z-16 65 chevelle Red with 50,000 miles on it he even still has the window papers on the window it is amazing he hasn’t touched it since I think 1975 sits in his garage with flat tires sad but it is all original he ordered it for factory by the way he lives in my home town in Kansas
The best indication that it's a real SS is the fact that the cowl tag is missing ... most likely so that someone could nefariously attach it to their restoration project to pass it off as a "real SS."
Someone should snatch up all that chrome from the trunk...looks like it is all there. Such a deal...or maybe not, and that is why it is still there.
Great Job Steve
I remember a magazine article from the day about a 1965 Chevelle with a Z-11 427 As I recall it was a factory one off example
Do you have that in your library?
My 1981 Camaro came with the 3.8 or 3.0 V6 from the factory with those six slot stealys .scrapped’um when I made it a drag car, now I’m putting it back to the street and I’m 5 of the stainless slot inserts away from it being original(appearing).
Thank you.
Cool episode I love all this type of stuff. Building any models on here ? What happened to the podcast ?
My dad had a 65 Chevelle SS convertible when he ordered it the dealership said the biggest motor he could get was a 283 with a two barrel . So that is what he got he also got the Muncie 4 speed transmission . Very nice car . I never saw it he got rid of it in 1971 . He said it was time for him to grow up . He kicked himself for doing it & told me never grow up !! Be responsible but never grow up
Dan Blocker, actor had a 1965 Z16 Convertible. He also was a Chevrolet spokesperson.
@@artieb2168 my dad & I were very surprised to hear about all the options the 65 Chevelle SS convertible had . We figured the dealership sales man did not know or was in a hurry to sell a car . It was his favorite car . Still has the hubcaps from it
I don't understand the grow up thing. You can put a baby in a 4 seater Chevelle.
@@mexicanspec he had a wife & two kids already I was #3 . I don't understand but it was 1971 & most people only had one car . Ps I did say he kicked himself
@@fredschmidt6802 My uncle traded in a 1964 Corvette for a 1969 Dodge Dart Western Special when my cousin was born. That was a bad trade in two ways.
Just subscribed Love the videos just wish they were a tad bit longer
My first car right out of high school was a 1965 Chevy Chevelle Malibu SS. I was the third owner. I bought it for $675.00. It was Ermine White and the inside was that blue metallic that GM put in everything back in the 60's. A guy that I know has one white but the inside is black that's ok I can live with a black interior, but he won't sell it.
Great vid........... 👍👍👍
Are you parting out the car I need the driver side, rear window, regulator, and window frame
66 was the first year for 396. 375 H.P. in the Z-16. Corvette had the 425 HP. The only year a 396 was rated 425 horse.
Was the glove box still there
Would it have a sticker on the door for the trim
My best buddy bought a new '65 SS, 327/300 HP/4-speed. Maroon with grey bucket interior. It didn't have positraction and full-throttle blasts would smoke the right rear tire for hundreds of feet.
How about that beautiful Daytona sitting next to it ? That’s more my style. Especially if it’s a turbo .
Considering only 201 z16's were made it's not a z16 until you prove it is. And the convertible frames weren't just boxed C frames the frame rails in the center are almost twice the width of a standard C frame rails with notches for floor clearance where the floor braces are.
They actually used a boxed frame for these cars. They had extra body mounts also.
A bud had a 64 Chevelle SS inline 6 Powerglide Black with red vinyl interior Not fast but looked like it
I'm pretty sure they did that with the 66-7 novas too or chevyll
Love chevelles. Do a video on the Daytona next to it please 😁
Hello Don Pease....THANKS for watching. About your wish for a video on the red Dodge Daytona Turbo-Z next to the '65 Chevelle SS, well your wish is granted! Just go to the Channel Dashboard of this channel and look back a few weeks and you'll see the Junkyard Crawl on that exact car! We even got a look UNDER it! Thanks again for watching...and writing, Steve Magnante
@@SteveMagnante can't believe I missed that one! Thought I've seen all of your junkyard crawls. Thanks for the tip!
@@heavychevy7382 Yep 👍 he had it up over a service pit, giving a good look at the frame and suspension. One of his best jyc videos. 🎓
Sis boyfriend had a used 65 in 66 green with black gut. Guy bought new in 64 but went to nam never came back.
Steve, you need to stay away from those methlabs, they are dangerous locations dude…. Just sayin’
I bought my fathers 65 chevelle that was a 6 cylinder SS but the engine was changed to a 283, was i the family for 15 years and thats the only car I regret getting rid of.
