I remember reading basically every dirt bike/motoX magazine I could find every month. I only knew of Dave Thorpe through those means. I live here in the U.S. Not much European coverage in those days. Dave Thorpe and other were extremely fortunate to live in a legendary time, with legendary men, riding legendary machines. Kudos Max a truly remarkable video.
Dave Thorpe rode like the wind. I haven't rode in years, the 70's and 80's was my time, it feels like a lifetime ago. In my opinion the mid 80's was the pinnacle of the sport.
Yep---until the 1986 production rule was forced on the USA only. That tripled the cost of a bike in 5 years, and the EPA dictatorship forced 4-stroke bike almost tripled the cost again. No racers in the top 20 coming out of Michigan anymore. Last factory rider was Kelly Smith over 2 decades ago now for KTM. The sport is dead,--where it was so alive in Michigan. Probably much the same in your area.
Dave is blest to still have his Dad around...They are two special souls!..What a treat of a video Sir!...also Mr King is an authority on those era Works bikes.....Really enjoyed this. Well done.
You have knocked it out of the park with this video Max. This is without doubt the best motocross bike ever built and to have both Dave and Keith give their thoughts on this stunning machine. Probably, in my humble opinion… the best 999Lazer video to date. Amazing stuff. 😎🤩🥰
I remember when this bike was kept at the bottom of the stairs at Dave‘s house, and I still proudly have Carl Nunn’s 1997 Indonesian GP bike in the shed. Dave and Keith are top blokes and always have plenty of time for everybody 👍🏻🇬🇧🍻
As an American that grow up in a family that said we only ride red round here, this was a treat to say the least. Thats 1 bike that cant be replaced an wish they would replicate now day's. Great job on the video. I ❤ it.
What an amazing thing to see Dave & Keith re-unnited with their bike, especially for Keith's birthday. Truly you are living the motocross dream on vids like this one. It's good to see how many subs the channel has gained & rightly so for all your hard work & dedication to producing great content. Cheers 999 👌
WOW! Dave Thorpe was definitely a legend in the 500cc/Open Class! Really cool video and an absolutely AMAZING Honda Works RC500!!! I really MISS the 500cc/Open class in motocross racing!!! BRING IT BACK!!!
999B - what an amazing video !!!!! I loved every bit of it !!! What a great time in MX - the history right here is incredible !!!! I have been racing since 1977 and still going strong at 55 !!!! I raced open class 2 strokes from 1983 to 2004 and still have fun on muy KTM MX 500 and YZ 400 in vintage classes !!! The 80s were the greatest times in MX imo - thank you for keeping these memories alive and well !! Thank you and the Thorpe family - Cheers
So wonderful to see some of these bikes have survived. I've had a fascination with HRC works bikes since 1993 when a magazine (I think it was Motocross Action) did a test of the then-new production CR250 against a 1983 works bike and the basic conclusion was that the '83 was every bit as good as the '93. The idea that ten years of development on the production bike hadn't eclipsed the works bike was just wild to me.
Brilliant video, Max ! Thanks for making it. All the features and history... Great to see Dave and his Dad.... Good to see Graham Noyce get a mention as 1979 World Champion.....
When you said Dave was World Champion 37 years ago I instantly felt old as I remember him winning it although I was only 10 years old. That bike is amazing 😮
I was seventeen years old ,when I was lucky enough to watch DT crash at the start of the GP at Farley Castle in 1986 and make his way from last place to win that race. What a legend. I drooled over this bike as a teenager and loved to see what the HRC factory team guys could come up with, to give the team an edge, over the competition. If I remember correctly the bike was tuned to behave more like a four stroke with much wider power band than most two strokes and this is how DT was able to ride this bike with only 4 gears, which resulted in less gear changes producing faster lap times. This was enabled by the wizardry of the HRC factory engineers. I would love to know more about how the bikes were reunited with their internal components. I ecpect there were many versions of those parts, due to the rapid development done by the HRC guys. Its also interesting how this bike helped to show how 4 strokes engine characteristics had some advantages over their 2 stroke cousins and how they dominate the series now. Sad to see the demise of the 2 stokes though.
Another fantastic video Max, absolutely loved it, and so did Dave and his dad, really looking forward to the next one with more rare unobtainable bikes .
These HRC bikes of the early-mid 80’s are nothing short of masterpieces. Beautiful sight to see Dave’s dad happiness to see his old bike. I’ve always wanted to know what RC means in the name RC500? Great video mate, love these blast from the past videos. The stories the greats of the 80’s share.
Such a work of art! The epitome of “form follows function” as applied to the design of a motocross motorcycle. This was the pinnacle of the works bike era. I miss that time so much, the exotic factory bikes. All the Japanese manufacturers would blow our minds almost monthly with the progress from around 1976 to 1986. And the production bikes followed suit, with massive changes every year. It was magical!
What a special & great episode, thank you Max to you & everyone involved in making it all possible for us all to enjoy such a special machine & one of the greatest rider ever Mr. David Thorpe. What an incredible time in the history of motocross. And I thank you once again, thank you for making me feel like a kid drooling over these bikes as I read about them in all the motocross magazines🙏 👏👊
Gotta hand it to you 999 you content gets better and better. I'm a long time fan of Dave Thorpe a true champion. I've seen Dave win a few championships, he mixed it with some of the best open class racers in the world and always fought a fair fight for the title. Great job Dave. And you Lazer are a great racer yourself. Keep the good content coming. Thanks.

I went to quite a few British Championship rounds in '86, pretty much just to see Dave ride this bike. It makes me very happy to know that one of these amazing machines still exists and is being well looked after.
Oh man...if I dig into my old photos, I took pictures of his bike at the 1986 USGP at Carlsbad. I also took shots of CR500 that Ricky Johnson rode that day. Afterwards ,I spent hours comparing the two bikes. I always thought that the front fender brace on Dave's bike was cool. I also remember Johnson's bike having the first inverted fork that I had ever seen. Dave was a great rider. A true champion, for sure.
It was a great experience to see Dave & his Father relive these experiences. To me, Dave Thorpe was the Honda CR/RC specialist on these absolute rockets.. pure motocross porn , you had to of lived that era king David his dad keith all the HRC set up as a schoolboy racer we dreamed it we wanted it , my Dad bless him hated it cost him a fortune , He was a Carla man loved the yamaha's and i raced them until i got to the seniors and could put my leg over a CR 125 and like many had to have Axo boots an MDS helmet ,Oakleys and so on , we had a hero we loved , i sat on the empty show bikes back then at bike shows had to be dragged off them , brilliant video guys .
Loved how dave was straight into the back of the van all excited. Couldnt wait to get it out of van to look at it.. brilliant video guys. Looking forward to next one 😊😊
26:09 looks like a head coolant leak there. I would have been a good factory mechanic,---for 2-strokes. I should have tried when I was ready. Would have been a great experience.
The Thorpe family is reason enough for Honda to be producing 2 strokes to this day!!!
Yes please, especially if it's a new sport quad.
Hate that only yamaha remains producing them
Yeh honda lost there way! Wow what a bike! Ive always said years ago i want cr500 1986 but now i know i cant afford it 😢
