- This is Dave Thorpe's 1986 500cc Motocross World Championship winning Honda RC500, and it's in a pristine condition. So we thought it was only right that we reunite the legendary bike with it's legendary rider! The new owners took the factory big bore down to the Thorpe workshop so he could verify the legitimacy of what has just become the most expensive dirt bike in the world, and Max and Dave reminisce on his time riding one of the most famous 2 strokes in MX history. Mr. VMXdN Dave King is also on hand to give us a tour around the bike and we might have another surprise or two in store as well... Enjoy guys, this was a very special video for us to make! :-)

Finding the Long Lost RC500 Factory 2 Stroke!
The Thorpe family is reason enough for Honda to be producing 2 strokes to this day!!!
Yes please, especially if it's a new sport quad.
Hate that only yamaha remains producing them
Yeh honda lost there way! Wow what a bike! Ive always said years ago i want cr500 1986 but now i know i cant afford it 😢
Honda hasn't made a 2 stroke since 2007!
😭😭😭😭😭😍🥰😍♥️
I proudly still have my 1986 production since then... happily 1 owner and 1 of 6 of the first new season shipments late 1985. 😊
I remember reading basically every dirt bike/motoX magazine I could find every month. I only knew of Dave Thorpe through those means. I live here in the U.S. Not much European coverage in those days.
Dave Thorpe and other were extremely fortunate to live in a legendary time, with legendary men, riding legendary machines.
Kudos Max a truly remarkable video.
Thanks Eric, I appreciate your kind words:)
The smile on Dads face is priceless.
You have knocked it out of the park with this video Max. This is without doubt the best motocross bike ever built and to have both Dave and Keith give their thoughts on this stunning machine. Probably, in my humble opinion… the best 999Lazer video to date. Amazing stuff. 😎🤩🥰
Thanks Paul, it was a special day and such a privilege to talk to them both about the bike. They were the golden days for sure:)
Thorpy, Legend, had the pleasure of meeting him on the press day at the Dirt Bike show in 2001.
Dave is blest to still have his Dad around...They are two special souls!..What a treat of a video Sir!...also Mr King is an authority on those era Works bikes.....Really enjoyed this. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for watching:)
In my mind he will always be the greatest motocross rider of all time. Cheers from Oz
These bikes are legendary still today there is nothing on the planet that compares to them except maybe the YZ500M.
Melbourne 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
He is right up there. 🥳🥳
@maxrpm2215 I've ridden a YZ 490 and that thing was a monster of a bike.
Will always prefer the Honda stuff though
What an amazing thing to see Dave & Keith re-unnited with their bike, especially for Keith's birthday. Truly you are living the motocross dream on vids like this one. It's good to see how many subs the channel has gained & rightly so for all your hard work & dedication to producing great content. Cheers 999 👌
Thanks Michael, a lot hours goes into our videos so it means a lot to get a comment like that :)
WOW! Dave Thorpe was definitely a legend in the 500cc/Open Class! Really cool video and an absolutely AMAZING Honda Works RC500!!! I really MISS the 500cc/Open class in motocross racing!!! BRING IT BACK!!!
Glad you liked it! cheers max
999B - what an amazing video !!!!! I loved every bit of it !!! What a great time in MX - the history right here is incredible !!!! I have been racing since 1977 and still going strong at 55 !!!! I raced open class 2 strokes from 1983 to 2004 and still have fun on muy KTM MX 500 and YZ 400 in vintage classes !!! The 80s were the greatest times in MX imo - thank you for keeping these memories alive and well !! Thank you and the Thorpe family - Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it Mike:)
I remember when this bike was kept at the bottom of the stairs at Dave‘s house, and I still proudly have Carl Nunn’s 1997 Indonesian GP bike in the shed. Dave and Keith are top blokes and always have plenty of time for everybody 👍🏻🇬🇧🍻
When you said Dave was World Champion 37 years ago I instantly felt old as I remember him winning it although I was only 10 years old. That bike is amazing 😮
Thanks for taking the time to watch the video Larry:)
Such a work of art! The epitome of “form follows function” as applied to the design of a motocross motorcycle. This was the pinnacle of the works bike era. I miss that time so much, the exotic factory bikes. All the Japanese manufacturers would blow our minds almost monthly with the progress from around 1976 to 1986. And the production bikes followed suit, with massive changes every year. It was magical!
Dave Thorpe rode like the wind. I haven't rode in years, the 70's and 80's was my time, it feels like a lifetime ago. In my opinion the mid 80's was the pinnacle of the sport.
Yep---until the 1986 production rule was forced on the USA only. That tripled the cost of a bike in 5 years, and the EPA dictatorship forced 4-stroke bike almost tripled the cost again. No racers in the top 20 coming out of Michigan anymore. Last factory rider was Kelly Smith over 2 decades ago now for KTM. The sport is dead,--where it was so alive in Michigan. Probably much the same in your area.
@@EarthSurferUSA I was born and raised and live in MI.
I hope bikes like this never go to ruin. So historical in motocross
Brilliant video, Max ! Thanks for making it.
All the features and history...
Great to see Dave and his Dad....
Good to see Graham Noyce get a mention as 1979 World Champion.....
So wonderful to see some of these bikes have survived. I've had a fascination with HRC works bikes since 1993 when a magazine (I think it was Motocross Action) did a test of the then-new production CR250 against a 1983 works bike and the basic conclusion was that the '83 was every bit as good as the '93. The idea that ten years of development on the production bike hadn't eclipsed the works bike was just wild to me.
As an American that grow up in a family that said we only ride red round here, this was a treat to say the least. Thats 1 bike that cant be replaced an wish they would replicate now day's. Great job on the video. I ❤ it.
I was seventeen years old ,when I was lucky enough to watch DT crash at the start of the GP at Farley Castle in 1986 and make his way from last place to win that race. What a legend. I drooled over this bike as a teenager and loved to see what the HRC factory team guys could come up with, to give the team an edge, over the competition. If I remember correctly the bike was tuned to behave more like a four stroke with much wider power band than most two strokes and this is how DT was able to ride this bike with only 4 gears, which resulted in less gear changes producing faster lap times. This was enabled by the wizardry of the HRC factory engineers. I would love to know more about how the bikes were reunited with their internal components. I ecpect there were many versions of those parts, due to the rapid development done by the HRC guys. Its also interesting how this bike helped to show how 4 strokes engine characteristics had some advantages over their 2 stroke cousins and how they dominate the series now. Sad to see the demise of the 2 stokes though.
Thanks for watching Matt
Another fantastic video Max, absolutely loved it, and so did Dave and his dad, really looking forward to the next one with more rare unobtainable bikes .
More to come:) thanks as always
😭😭😭😭♥️♥️♥️♥️
Memories,Memories
I lifted up Dave Thorpe on my shoulders, when he became World Champion in Luxembourg
.I run on the track, faster as all english Fans- and could lift him up...what a heavy MAN...✊🏻
That's the best and most interesting video I've seen for years.. Marvelous history.
David Thorpe.. Keith Thorpe... I salute you both.
🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks Paul, I appreciate your comment :)
This is your best video . Thanks to Dave Thorpe And his dad
Thanks Paul
Esto si que eran prototipos de fabrica wow Malherbe, geboers, thorpe mamma mia , leyendassss !
Gotta hand it to you 999 you content gets better and better. I'm a long time fan of Dave Thorpe a true champion. I've seen Dave win a few championships, he mixed it with some of the best open class racers in the world and always fought a fair fight for the title. Great job Dave. And you Lazer are a great racer yourself. Keep the good content coming. Thanks.
Thanks Mark, glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Now that is one great story. Seeing Daves dad's face as he looked over the bike was priceless.. well done Max. BIG 👍 from me. 😉
Glad you enjoyed it :) Cheers Max
What a special & great episode, thank you Max to you & everyone involved in making it all possible for us all to enjoy such a special machine & one of the greatest rider ever Mr. David Thorpe. What an incredible time in the history of motocross. And I thank you once again, thank you for making me feel like a kid drooling over these bikes as I read about them in all the motocross magazines🙏 👏👊
Un morceau de légende, cette moto est un miracle de technologie, le rêve de tout pilote.
Merci.
That is a work of art 👏🏻🤝🏼
it really is, such a good looking bike. Thanks for watching:)
These HRC bikes of the early-mid 80’s are nothing short of masterpieces.
Beautiful sight to see Dave’s dad happiness to see his old bike.
I’ve always wanted to know what RC means in the name RC500?
Great video mate, love these blast from the past videos.
The stories the greats of the 80’s share.
Oh man...if I dig into my old photos, I took pictures of his bike at the 1986 USGP at Carlsbad. I also took shots of CR500 that Ricky Johnson rode that day. Afterwards ,I spent hours comparing the two bikes. I always thought that the front fender brace on Dave's bike was cool. I also remember Johnson's bike having the first inverted fork that I had ever seen. Dave was a great rider. A true champion, for sure.
I bet those photos are so cool. Thanks for watching :)
I remember watching motocross at Farleigh Castle, absolutely brilliant day seeing David Thorpe riding.

Thanks for this video. Dave & Graham Noyce were my two heroes as a kid.
I went to quite a few British Championship rounds in '86, pretty much just to see Dave ride this bike. It makes me very happy to know that one of these amazing machines still exists and is being well looked after.
Wow that step up rad is actually rad. Thanks all you guys for doing this
Thanks for watching Jaylee
Don't he drop the radiator cap as he caught it at the first round .thorpe to me was god .
Cheers Gov Greg from Australia 🇦🇺 59 years old
It was a great experience to see Dave & his Father relive these experiences. To me, Dave Thorpe was the Honda CR/RC specialist on these absolute rockets..
I had an 83 Suzuki RM 500.. 4 speed, but oh my the power just put a grin across your face.
Then in 92 I brought the CR500 86 model.. My shoulders still feel pulled out there sockets 😂… Absolutely mental machine. I never raced either, but I had some amazing experiences on both bikes.
Really wish I’d of kept them now…
Thx for sharing this great video Max.. ✌🏼
BRILLIANT VIDEO AND DAVID THORPE KEITH THORPE DAVE KING..AND THE VIDEO MAKER..🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Thanks Barry :)
What an incredible bike for an even more incredible rider ❤
I never personally met Dave, but I used to ride over Bracknell Forest/The Old Dean, where we would often see him practice in the mid-late 80s. He was a local legend to us "kids" even back then.
I love these videos you are doing on the VMX bikes BTW. Brings back a lot of good memories.
The old dean brings back memories getting chased by the rangers and nearly getting driven over by a tank
i really like these history bike videos i still have a sticker of dave thorpe on the inside of my garage door, his dad face says a lot nice one
Cheers Arthur:)
Brilliant video loved it and Dave so humble he’s the best and always will be
100% Thanks for watching
They sure could build bices back then. It's not just the most expencive bike It's one of the best loking bikes aswell. Like 1985 and 1986 Husqvarna is the best loking production bikes ever build. Thanks for a great video and it was really touching to se Davids father loking at the bike. 👍
Great vid max & team, proper mxer proper bike, im now at that age, when people use to say to me , things were better when i was a boy, now im saying that, how cool was mx in 80's✊🏻💨👍🏻
I had no idea that Dave had it in him, taking out another rider. The 1986 series is one of the best with 20 points separating first from fourth, Thorpe, Malberbe, Geboers, Jobe.
Putting out the best Motocross content on the internet!!
Thank you :)
@@999lazer Yea, good. But lets be honest too. The competition is not very knowledgeable, and have awful ideas that they propagate. I mean,--for one example, it is about time that Gypsy clown got rid of the star wars toys in his studio background. :) Now, just for one example of many, he talks about getting rid of privateers.
If those guys are not easy to beat,----mankind is doomed. bummer
Brilliant vlogg again Max , The look on his dads Face was priceless
Thanks Docs, it was a special day for sure.
Man DT is my all time hero and to see this was emotional so thank you very much,,, the only time i met dave was a british championship round in the 90's cant really remember dates exactly but it was a track at Appley bridge near wigan i had a big shiner after being jumped on and i approached DT i can imagine his face im from Liverpool and i come up go his face with my scouse accent to say hi hows it going, lame i know but what do you say, anyway he's the boss as far as im concerned alway was an is and dont care what others think, proper idol of mine.
thanks Max proper boss vid mate
Awesome, those days were the best, I remember Dave turning up at southern motocross SMX pig hill in the eighties what a true gentleman, shame I was never an A group rider 🙄 thanks for sharing 🍀👍🙏
ty for once again for a amazing video of such a piece of history and having the thorpes there wow... ure amazing 999lazer.. ty shano honda australia
No worries Shane, its our pleasure. Thanks for watching all the way of Australia :)
Love your channel Max and enjoy Dave King too because of your genuine passion. It's not just a topic you chose because you thought it would make you a successful RUclipsr. Thanks for keeping the bikes alive by showcasing them. So that young squirts can know where their bikes came from and the history of the bikes' development
Keith is a legend. Still working as well.
You can see how shocked Dave is when he first set eyes on it.
What a fantastic bike. 👍
David Thorpe, Andre Malherbe, Eric Goboers, George Jobe and American David Bailey were the Kings of 80's Motocross with David Thorpe the being the overall Legend of World GP Motocross. Hopefully the remaining bikes of this era will be preserved forever
This is awesome, Dave was a giant in the day, loved his style and his bikes epic
Is this the bike Jonny O beat Dave on on a CR125? Love them all, that O show ride was insane
Dave , keith and the Honda was a dream team , great to see Keith in this video , would like to see that beauty fired up 👍
Thanks for watching. Keep checking back to see the start up video :)
@@999lazer Will do ! By the way the Suzuki TM video was excellent as well 👍
On my ‘85 CR500, I started in 3rd gear for every race. I also got the wholeshot every time. I only weighed 130 pounds at the time, though.
So cool what a great job 👏 thank you for making the video!!!
Glorious ! Nice to know most are back here 😊, iv thought before will people be like this about say billy bolts bikes in 30 years
Thanks Dan, we have wondered the same, but there is no doubt those 80's RC 500's were built in a magical time for Motocross
Absolutely I have an 88 500 with early wp upside down front end fitted back in 88 it's a treasure maybe bills bikes arernt so hand made as the RC's 😊
Max, that’s awesome to reunite Dave Thorpe with his championship winning bike 🫡🏁🏁🏁
Thanks Dean, it was a real privilege to be there for it.
THE bike of the bikes.
Full stop.
it sure is. Thanks for watching:)

Absolutely awesome 💯.What a nice surprise for a racer, with dad as mechie 💪.
Factory Honda's were always special.
Nice one team.👍
Well done Max, absolutely superb video 👏🏻👏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely fantastic video, 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow, were did you find that real works bike?
Wow. This is phenomenal.
Not only would we like to see it run, it would be amazing to see Dave ride it!
You made my day. Thanx!!!
My pleasure!!
as a teen reader the MX mags and seeing photos of these works bikes was always mind blowing to see the difference…wish we could still have works bike category and two stroke and tracks that weren’t all freestyle jumps…but at least we are lucky to have seen the height of MX
What a great video. Love the history.
.. Another ace vid,.. Nice one Max ,...
Thank you :)
Enjoyed your interview from the man himself fabulous story which can never be repeated ❤
What a beautiful video and a beautiful story, now I need to find that book and I'm not much of a reader, but It looks like something I'd really get into thanks for that 💪😎💯
thanks for watching, The book is such a good read. you'll definitely enjoy it:)
It’s so interesting to hear where the bikes went to.
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching
Great video, the 500 were always the badst race bikes and I love seeing Dave and his Dad together with the bike,,happy birthday POPs,,,once I put a sidecar on a 85 cr500,won the canadian ice raceing championship and got a spot in the movie 9 on eny sunday the next chapter 0,,in the first minutes of the movie you see a sidecar round the corner, thats me driven and the former champion on the sidecar,,fundays,,its on youtube
what an awesome story, I'll take a look:) Thanks for watching
Just saw this video….love the vintage MX gear……let’s fine Brad Lackeys RM 500
Except for the motocross of nations! Oh...the O'Show! Great video Max!
my thought as well the O show on the 125 MXON 86
@@chamisi What a race!:)))) And he beat the world's best on a 125! All success in 2024!
Mx was on grandstand back then especially a world hawkstone race, Thorpe is an absolute legend and those bikes were beautiful 👌 ( ps I remember Eric had a decompression lever on the handlebars to help start it in later years )
Thanks for watching :0
Have you watched kaplan America. Another motocross fanatic especially 500s.his bikes are absolutely mint
nice bike. my brother had an maico 500 -86
Utterly fantastic thank you
You're very welcome Spencer :)
Great video keep watching over and over again brilliant
Glad you enjoyed it
Yes he needs to ride this bike. Only down side would it getting messed up but it’s worth it. While he’s still breathing it just adds another story to add to it
Wow! That's a true "Works" bike! There's practically nothing recognizable between this bike and a stock '86 CR500.
Very interesting story. It's a bit like the factory road racing bikes, MV etc. all one off's.
Best one yet sir!!! Keep up the great work 😊
Thanks David, Will do :)
Brilliant channel guys 👍🏻
Thanks for always watching he videos:)
pure motocross porn , you had to of lived that era king David his dad keith all the HRC set up as a schoolboy racer we dreamed it we wanted it , my Dad bless him hated it cost him a fortune , He was a Carla man loved the yamaha's and i raced them until i got to the seniors and could put my leg over a CR 125 and like many had to have Axo boots an MDS helmet ,Oakleys and so on , we had a hero we loved , i sat on the empty show bikes back then at bike shows had to be dragged off them , brilliant video guys .
Yep, 1986, the year the FIM stopped factory development in the USA with the 1986 production rule,--of course, only for the USA.
The year Johnny O'Mara beat this 500cc factory works bike,---on a production based 125, with team USA winning the MXofN for the next 8 years on production based bikes.
Beautiful bikes Honda made back then though. I wish they would do a production run for nostalgic reasons,---and vet racing. The Pro's would be jealous. :)
Loved how dave was straight into the back of the van all excited. Couldnt wait to get it out of van to look at it.. brilliant video guys. Looking forward to next one 😊😊
Oops, it's good to see Sir. David Thorpe and crew reunited with their super bike..👍
Thanks for watching:)
I'm amazed that it still exists. Many of the true "works" bikes were destroyed at the end of each season.
Coming back in 30years to hear TIMs story on his HRC crf450
If you ask if the RC500's had exhaust power valves, with a 4-speed transmission, the answer is "No". :)
500's could have a very wide range of great power, (but not many could ride them to their limit.). The bigger bore engines did not lose a lot of bottom end power for top end power if they were ported and pipes well. I think there is a cool company in Canada making 500cc and bigger 2-stroke engines to stuff in a modern 4-stroke frame, and they have a exhaust power valve. They did not have to increase the price like that, (up to a grand per engine I can estimate). They will sell less engines.
Have you guys filmed the Graham Noyce world championship CR500. I met a bloke a few months ago that has it sat in his workshop. Unreal bike well worth a look.
Thanks for the tip. We'll look into it.
@@999lazer Yea, it looks like by the comments section (market research), that if you put together a special series, hunting for works bikes to remember, (great show this was IMO), the series would be a great hit. The more, the merrier of course. :) You can search the USA too. You don't have to be here personally with today's communications (if they work), but we would welcome you to the country man. :)
What a bike! Wow!
Fantastic!!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
I know that Brad lackey also used a four speed gearbox on his bikes I think it was on the Suzuki 500
Best video yet. Awesome job mate.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you.
DVD 😆 that’s near as old as the bike! Good watch that Max am 54 so my hero back in the day 🤙
