As someone who was born in 2002, I can say with the utmost certainty that 1997 was indeed a fabulous year. Really neat camera and a great video as always Ben, always a pleasure when you upload.
Another terrific episode! I love Lomography, so this is right up my alley! I got my undergrad in 97, as well as bought the house I still reside in- pretty good year!
Since no one's mentioned it yet, 1997 was a classic year for games, a few little-knowns like Goldeneye 007, Final Fantasy 7, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Star Fox 64... what a year!
So happy to see you back 😍☀️ P. S. I loved the year '97 I was 3 years old and had great food, weekly trips to the beach and awesome parents. Very cool times!!
congrats on your wedding and success Ben! its good to see you back and am looking forward to all the cool new videos once the spaces has been moved into!
In a world of verrrrry similar new plastic cameras (Kodak F9, Ilford Sprite, AgfaPhoto, etc...), it's so cool that Lomography put time into creating a truly classy little thing. I love the design, and the surprisingly feature-richness of it. Great review.
The Lonesome Crowded West was released by Modest Mouse in 1997 so yes, a very good year. I love the cheap 'black plastic' look that tries to look more expensive than it actually is. Reminds me of Hanimex point and shoots. I'd love to see this stacked up against the cult classic Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim; a point and shoot that feels as light and cheap as McDonalds smoothie cup but takes shots like no ones business. Good to see you back dude.
This is such a random coincidence, but I actually just listened to The Lonesome Crowded West for the first time yesterday and instantly fell in love with it (esp. Teeth like God's Shoeshine, such an amazing opener to the album!!!!)
It’s great to see you back. Congratulations on your wedding, I hope the two of you will be blissfully happy. Congratulations on the big work changes too.
Congrats on marriage. 🎉 That pic of you with the camera up to your face is legendary. But yeeeesh that camera store is beautiful 🤩 def have to visit next time I’m in New York
I‘ve been a lomographer since 2008. and while I appreciate them releasing a new plastic all-purpose camera it seems a little counter-intuitive with 35mm color film being so hard to get and being ridiculously pricey. Apart from that, there are so many other cameras doing the same, from monographische as well. It might be a good cam for newbies. Doesn’t really tingle me. I‘m waiting for the new kickstarter project from NONS cameras with their new instax mini slr chassis. Giving me the opportunity to use my Nikon lenses.
I must've been OFF yt to miss this! also 1997 was solid. simpler times. I remember shooting outside with a webcam that did double duty as a portable came you could take crappy photos with outside. with resolution like 320x280 or something haha
1997 was the year I bought my first Lomo LC-A, and I recall that I bought it in part based on the glowing reviews of the quality and sharpness of the lens. Much was made in reviews at the time of the supposed connection between the Lomo company and the Russian spy network. The LC-A’s lens was said to be derived from the sharp and fast lenses used on spy cameras. Combined with the LC-A’s ability to shoot long exposures in dark conditions, the lens can produce some very good low light images. Bottom line-it’s not a Leica, but the LC-A isn’t a bad camera, either. Used correctly, it will produce nicely focused, sharp, saturated images.
Y'all youngsters!!! My second daughter was born in 1997! Sheesh! This lomo camera has a little more robust look to it, I have had a number of lomo plastic-fantastic models in the past and they barely held up with my 'geriatric' shooting style!!! Well, I guess that I'll order one and then, dangit, I'll have to get married again so that I have somewhere to use it!!!
im bringing this camera, the stylus infinity and the fuji ga 645w to japan. at first i was just gonna bring the latter two but just got this camera and that kaleidoscope is gonna be too fun.
I had some problems getting good pictures with my Diana 120, but maybe I just my way of shooting with did not quite combine with it BUT this new one here, seems like a nice little guy to take around! I am thinking of giving it a try! And btw: that store looks awesome!
Thanks about the store! It’s so surreal, truly. And this camera is much different than the Diana in the way it was built (and its intent as a lower fidelity camera), def recommend!
@@zizitripo408 good choice, the ektar h35 is a cheaper camera, with way less quality . good camera for the price , apparat is a better camera, but the ektar 35 will do the job also, maybe i ll buy both
love this video and this camera looks awesome! question: for the exposures, are they a typical exposure width (just wide angle), or are they extended exposure widths on the film, like the sprocket rocket? (my film store won't scan the longer exposures...) thanks!
Maybe I missed it, but why not mention the La Sardina? Considering it’s 90% exactly the same camera in terms of lens and function, But it just looks a little different.
Thanks so much for the video! I’ve got a question, when you look through the viewfinder, is the image rectangular and does the view fill the viewfinder? Or does the image look far away, circular, and only fill less than half the viewfinder? I recently received mine and the view through the viewfinder seemed weird to me. As if the prism was reversed. I recently contacted lomo and was told this was “normal” 🤷🏻♂️ and am curious what your experience has been. Thanks so much!
late reply but i have this same problem, i swear the first time i looked through it, it was normal and then a little while later it became like this… it’s also pretty blurry for me
I loved your video, I watched it twice, second time showing to my parents, because it forced me to preorder this camera 😀 What ISO film would you recommend shooting? I'm worried I'll not get good exposition since the film is the only thing I can choose with fixed shutter speed and aperture. Thanks for any advice 🙂
You certainly could use 400 speed all the time, but 100 is a nice option to use mid-day! The narrow aperture makes it so that 400 may be advisable for even shady or overcast situations to limit underexposure.
I’ve got a brand new Lomography apparat (black) on eBay complete set cheaper than retail in brand new condition if you’re interested. One roll was shot to try it but I’ve got no use of it so it might as well find someone otherwise it’s gonna stay in its box
Is there a way you could mount something like a 21mm lense on a 35 mm sensor for digital cameras? I'm not really into photography but such as odd ball mixup seems really interesting to try doing photographs. right now I'm on a camera binge due to the aglo and it has been a fun journey so far.
Lomography needs to give you a La Sardina.. basically a Lomo Apparate but the lens is a little more round… Ask you buddy in NYC about it… let her know i sent you! :)
I love more traditional photography, I also love the Lomo vibe. I get what they are doing and I like the lofiness, but the buildquality of the Fisheye 2 was just ... garbage. And not in a charming way. Like the first 5 shots needed to be taken very quickly after eachother, because otherwise it would just unwind. And it was just tóo cheap to be properly usable honestly. Developers hated having to make prints, they would prefer to just develop and let me scan it in, because you would get some weird spacing in between frames especially at the start. No reviews mention that kind of things though as far as I could see back then. How does this compare on a scale from Fisheye 2 or Recesky TLR to decent camera like anything mass produced like an Olympus Trip? I would like to give it another try with something like this. I think 21mm is also a really fun focal length.
Art by mean of trial and error..... let’s try X,Y,Z and if I am lucky something interesting will come out, I am sure that for some it’s fun, people have had all sorts of fetishes since the dawn of days. There’s still some reasoning behind the madness of shooting medium and large format film, the same for traditional dark room printing, lomography is the equivalent of playing music on a damaged instrument that’s impossible to tune up.

Goldeneye was the barometer for if you were a true gamer or not lol

Happy to be here!! #97
Ben, I’m so happy for you! You deserve all this! 🎉
Alessandro thank you so so much!!
i just got this camera for xmas.. and man lomo never disappoints in their packaging. my first lomo was the lca+ in 2004 and it was just as fancy.
Hi! Do you suggest this camera as my first instant camera? Is it beginner friendly? Thanks!

Didnt know that was the story of Lomography that's awesome. Do you think you would review the new NONS SL660?
The Nons SL660 is indeed the next review! Time has been short but I will get it out soon 🔜
Remember being high watching Prodigy's Breathe video in 1997, so yeah, a great year.
Inhale, Inhale, you're the victim!😆

Thanks so much for the intro of the Sprocket Rocket, I love that pano camera, only $79. A little less than the Hasselblad PANX.
Haha yeah just a tad cheaper and 10x better

Loved the video, missed you videos recently. I don't think you mentioned is the camera equipped with a glass or plastic lens?
It is indeed plastic!

I was studying photography in college in 97!
I just purchased an Apparat and the the view through the viewfinder seems a bit not clear:( if this normal ?
Really nice video! Did you make or buy those red, orange, and blue (I'm guessing magnetic) wall mounted polaroid holders?
Hey David! I believe those are produced by Umbra - and yes they are magnetic! I use magnetic "thumb tacks" to hold them up.
Ohhhh baybeeeee!

I was 7 in 1997, lovely year.
Please, can you review the Lomo Automat!

I'm worried I'll not get good exposition since the film is the only thing I can choose with fixed shutter speed and aperture. Thanks for any advice 🙂
Hey Nir! So glad it was so nice you watched it twice. I recommend an ISO 400 speed film for everyday shooting!
@@InAnInstant Thank you very much, I can't wait to shoot with it 🙂
So would you typically shoot ISO 100 outside and 400 inside? Thanks for the video.
You certainly could use 400 speed all the time, but 100 is a nice option to use mid-day! The narrow aperture makes it so that 400 may be advisable for even shady or overcast situations to limit underexposure.
@@InAnInstant Thanks very much. I like the LC-A+, but the Lomoapparat ticks enough boxes at the lower price point to make you think.

Hi. What film did you use on your shots? Thanks!
There is a fair bit of Fuji Superia 400 in here, I'd say the main film on display!
hey man, my camera just came in and i have no idea how it works is it possible to get a tutorial?

Sure, there are plenty of wide angle cameras for full frame digitals!
Any news or review for the Nons? 👀👀👀
I want to see a digital point and shoot version exactly the same but in digital compact form please pretty please.
❤️
is this a glass or a plastic lens ?
1997 was a brilliant year.
is the lens made of plastic like a fisheye or glass like a lomo instant?
It's plastic fantastic!
I felt that I was past my interest in toy cameras but this made me rethink that
