hahaha this has actually made my cry with laughter, im sure this will be a really good tutorial but his head doing backflips around the canvas while completely serious is just too good!
#3 is the style I'm using for an RPG story I'm designing (and have been on and off for the past 10 years). Thanks for posting this. I'm trying to get a better idea of how to draw them. I've always been a fan of Tetsuya Nomura's art and have recently gained an affinity for Nao Ikeda's style, especially her play on real life outfits, and the thoroughness of her concepts.
True, it does feel different. And takes getting used to. I found what helps me is a little trick I learned from a colleague. Get a sheet of vellum from a local art store and tape it to the tablet. Make sure that it's a strong sheet that will stand up to a fair amount of use. Also, make sure that what ever you get has a bit of texture to it NOT something smooth or that would defeat the purpose. ;)
Depends on the status of artist. Contracts are normally time based not asset based. Though on DeviantArt there are lots of people offering rates per character. Prices vary generally from 20$ to up around 250$ depending how good the artist is.
i would agree except i think you would need much more than plugins such as a steady hand and good eye maybe a tablet if this is done in mouse than i doubt most will reach this level in the time limit of it almost being magical
@232x It doesn't matter what software he is using, you just need to be able to draw :-D Probably Photoshop just because of it's popularity, but could be anything from Painter to SAI. It's all about the way you use it, you take your time with any "paint" program and you can get same/similar results in various software suites.
How much money an artist gets is dependent on many things. How well he negotiates, knowledge of his own value vs. the market and the end use of the character. By the time you get to character design for something like 'Ice Age' (peter deseve) you know how much you can ask for. If you are doing a cartoon dog for a small start up, you can figure about 35-50 after that it's all in who you are doing it for.
Very cool. I wonder if he uses a tablet for that. I bought a Wacom a while back and found out that using the Wacom pen just doesn't feel the same as pen on paper. Takes way too long and I have to keep switching back and forth between mouse and pen. Nice vid, and thanks.
“The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.” It depends on yourself and how much you study :) like in almost everything "talent" is almost negligible. It is how motivated and determined you are to reach your goal. Study hard and you will get there :)
@jasperrumbelow well, it is not that hard, until you get used to pen tablet, because you are trained to look where you draw ( at the tip of the pencil ) and with tablet ( except those monitor-tablets ) you need to watch the screen, but it is not that hard...just a bit of practice, nothing more...
I've seen quite a few of the massive black DVD tutorials, I have to be honest - a lot of them are not that different from a speed painting video or something, not incredibly informative. Chan is one of the better teachers in his DVDs though, but still could use more in depth technique analysis and what not.
I know it cliche and cheesy but, practice makes perfect bro. I been drawing since i was little and still have a hard time with the digital medium. Over the years I've learned not to get discouraged and to continue pressing on even if its only a half hour a day brushing up on some techniques. Often times i can't even do that! xD... You'll get it.
+heazy87 using references really makes a big difference too. Most people who paint/draw what's in their mind will end up with very rough vague results.
''he/she will be able to help a client, and get paid, and then have kids, or maybe a fast car.'' rofl :D btw how much does a concept artist earn a year? aproximately?

Definitely worth it. Jason is awesome for being able to articulate what he's doing, where he wants to go with an image.
This is really cool, it is a great learning curve of how to do a rough character concepts in different styles.

So glad I purchased all of Jason's videos when they were available. So insightful and inspiring! :)
Dude that was sweet man like the ideas that you come up with for each Character.
The first character looks awesome. Is he used somewhere?
solid video, great art.

Thats some pro editing....
It's photoshop start to finish, actually. he usually has his menus hidden or on another monitor. (tab key is the shortcut for that).

not gonna lie, that floating head made me piss myself laughing.
Im gonna listen to this next time i have trouble sleeping, and watch this next time i need inspiration
good video, thanks for sharing. After doing the greyscale work, how do you colourise the characters?
Great video! what's the brush you've used to paint the hair on 3:13 and to shadow the cloths on 2:05? Thanks!
Does the DVD come with those wicked brushes? :O
My guess is that he created a new layer on top set to multiply or colorize and painted his color on that.
were can i get the brushes he uses to add the dust effect ? and how do you resize custom brushes for large drawings ?
what program is it that he uses in the beginning for the linework?
it isnt photoshop, and dosnt quite look like painter either.
What type of job is creating game characters for companys?
is it a very hard to convert your drawing skills from on paper onto the intuos ?
weldone , very good designs
Excellent, thanks Bentiho
OMG it's moving everywhere

I really wish i was good at digital art :( I get so frustrated. about not being able to paint or draw what's in my mind. :(
