  • “Music speaks louder than words.”
    “Maybe...just maybe, the light can reach even the bottom of a dark ocean.”
    “Was I able to live inside someone’s heart?”
    These thoughts are the essence of Your Lie in April. While Hikaru Nara is the iconic song, Orange fits the tone and ending of the show the most.
    Spoiler
    The hospital scene where she falls in a slump. The Ballade with the visual of the surreal blue world in the climax, becoming a faint memory in the cherry blossoms that look so graceful to the audience who are unaware of the truth.
    = = = = = About the Arrangement = = = = =
    The original song was pensive (my default mood) but inspiring - particularly at the bridge and end. I spammed the song and decided to arrange it. There were already many covers in late 2015. For some reason, the bridge and the ending were easy to arrange --- the notes came naturally. To this day, I’m convinced the song was MADE to be covered on piano, especially since the solo piano beginning eases the arrangement process.
    This arrangement is one of the hardest and most emotional songs to execute because of the multiple harmonies (pseudo-polyphony that recalls Bach’s style 1:18, 2:55, 6:06), the embellishments (1:40, 1:50, 3:23), the insane bridge at 4:05 (which at the time of arranging in 2015 and initial preview in 2017 were the first featured cross-hand glissando), and the final flight at the end 6:25 (with the otherworldly jazz-like scales and licks).
    Actually, the finale is propelled by dark ideas from a friend of a friend who passed:
    “...the same dream as always. Behind the wheel of a car racing down at 160 km/h and losing control as it accelerates. But strangely after more reflection, the initial fear is replaced by a sense of gladness, acceptance, and readiness to meet fate and demise as everything spirals out of control wildly: ‘Ahh, finally. I don't even need to go out of my way to end it anymore.’”
    Interestingly, this may be one of the few, if not the only J-pop arrangement, to explicitly call (0:20) for the middle sostenuto pedal on a grand piano which sustains only the notes held down. My left leg was already on the sostenuto pedal before the piece began, and I only shifted it after this bar. Plus, I added a lyrical, improvisatory “acoustic guitar” section at 5:16, as a reprieve from the bridge. And I actually deviate a little from my official sheets, such as at 5:53 when I decided to make the notes explode on a whim after a pause. Lastly, many times at 7:04 I stuck my head inside the grand piano lid to enjoy the rich, warm, and deep harmonies swirling around. In contrast to the billowing tension of the preceding bar, the final G Major 9th chord is the azure other-world that Kousei and Kaori shared in the final scene, but it’s also a more bittersweet version of the imagery of Kousei’s trauma when he wasn’t able to hear the notes “underwater.” With the last G-A-B-D-G-A-D, the view shifts to a clear sky that is crying nonetheless.
    = = = = = Meanings = = = = =
    It’s said that some of the best music was created from the extremes of the emotional spectrum. Unsurprisingly, YLIA has powerful scenes that even validated my reason for pursuing medical studies, mainly the empathy for Kaori, who lifted Kousei from the abyss. I stopped lessons in the beginning of 11th grade, shortly after I performed Rach 2. I had put piano in the background, no longer with the same insane fervor as before, possibly forever. Then I learned about anime in Feb. 2012, and Animenz and Ishter in Jan. 2013, and met them in April/May 2014. Without anime and anipiano, who knows where I would be. So, thank you, Animenz, Ishter, and you, my listeners.
    The arrangement’s ties to the paraphrase also highlights a dire need for self-care and the de-stigmatization of mental health issues in modern society.
    = = = = = Audio = = = = =
    This time, I decided to record on the grand piano, using the Disklavier system with a MIDI IN/OUT USB line to Reaper on my PC. The problem that still persists is the smaller dynamic range of the resulting MIDI. For example, hitting velocities (“loudness”) bigger than 90 is rare and extremely difficult. I tweaked the velocity curve in the VST but it’s still not enough. Therefore, I’m looking for people who can help solve this problem with me with the software Reaper and my current gear (Disklavier and a MIDI IN/OUT cable).
    Note: increase your normal listening volume for this song. I do a 50%-100% increase, so 20 to 30 or 40 on the volume slider.

    Once again, I am humbled by the fact that there exists such a musician as you, almost completely overseen by RUclips's algorithm. This is the best Orange cover I have ever seen in my life in terms of musicality, and reaffirms the reason why Animenz and so many other "larger" pianists on YT look up to you and your work, along with the scores of junior pianists like myself who idolize you. Every time the chorus comes around I uncontrollably smile in delight. Watching and rewatching your variations and your personal touches throughout the piece gave me so so much inspiration. Thank you for this gift, Chris. I sincerely hope you can keep producing such powerful works in the future, although I know that med school will be brutal in sucking your time away. 大哥太牛逼了。加油!万事如意!

      @ChrisLuan  3 года назад +22

      Thanks Hayashi, I'm but one. There are so many other channels that deserve more acclaim --- but I try not to let RUclips's algorithm bother me. I think about it sometimes, but I refuse to bend to it. Hearing that I'm looked up to is an honor, but it's also scary haha. I hope I can just emphasize I'm just passionate about particular things and have been willing to invest time at the expense of popularity. I'm glad that 'the music reached [your] heart', as it's one of the core ideas in YLIA. I hope I can too, but I also know my priorities and schedule will probably shift and my style may also shift. Nothing is written in stone yet in our lives. Better just seize happiness indeed.

    If there is one person who can keep pushing the potential limit of anipiano, it is you my friend. This cover is definitely one of the best you've done yet, as well as being the most ambitious piano arrangement in the history of anipiano thus far. The result is nothing but perfection : This music is absolutely brilliant, so many emotional roller coaster through the thunderous flurries of note, the creativity to bring out the emotions through moment of rest that tug on your heartstring, the creative usage of jazz chords and multivoicing is icing on a cake. There are so many things to love here. The way each chorus are so distinct, the way you handle second verse that is really refreshing and engaging to listen as you manage to add colors and emphasize the richness of the melody with brilliant musical phrasing and chord voicings. The absolutely powerful runs at 4:20 that transition to the tear-jerking ballad at 4:35 (not gonna lie, tears were shed) the beautiful "interlude" at 5:15, like the final "preparation" for the final push at the final chorus, and finally my favorite rendition of the ending I've ever heard from any cover of this song so far 6:26 that send shiver down my spine. This whole masterpiece is such an intense experience, it was an emotional catharsis that I rarely experience from a normal anime piano arrangement. I have nothing else but to say...absolutely well done Chris, your passion and hardwork is absolute worth it. I've been looking forward to your grand return all this time, and I couldn't ask for a stronger comeback, after 5 years, you can finally rest.
    This arrangement reminds me once again why you are one of the anipianist friend I look up to the most. It's not because of the insane techniques, it's not because of the crazy jazz experimentation : It's the work of art created by a man who stop at nothing to achieve the musical greatness, to tell the stories and emotions through piano to the best of this ability. I have nothing but admiration and respect for you man, you've motivated many people including me to take our crafts much more seriously and earnestly (seriously, if I didn't encounter your Reverie, I might not have a drive to study music theories and improve my own sound at all lol) You may be receive much views as people like Animenz, but be proud and confident that us fellow creators look up to you and respect your work with high regard, and your determination and action has planned a seed of inspiration to many of us. I can't wait to see how your music will evolved! I will earnestly anticipate your next work man! Great job once again Chris! :D

    • @ChrisLuan

      Better late than never, but it's something I'll work on this year. Can everyone just take a moment and appreciate how when CSM comments on Animenz and other channels, he always gives such a thorough narrative from his perspective?
      First off, your comment from a while ago inspired me to reduce sections to prevent the texture from becoming overwhelming. I'm glad that I uploaded the teaser because without it, this final arrangement would not be the way it is --- which is much better than all previous drafts.
      This is absolutely the roller coaster that you described. Spoilers for everyone who hasn't watched [stop reading now]. In that moment when the audience shares the defeated frustration of a slumped over Kaori in the hospital halls as she seems to curse her failing legs, we can't help but want to cheer her on, if not comfort her at the least since it doesn't seem we can cure her. Our hopes carry on even into the wide open blue coda of the Chopin Ballade, where the overtones of both the show and the music carry far off into the pristine space, leaving a bittersweet, emptying catharsis that bubbles up in our souls. For those magical moments, it seems like anything is possible, even a miracle. And yet, anything but a miracle is what happens. The original song, Orange, seems to embody this, as well as all the highlights from the second half of the show. As you can see, the song resonated with my experience and soul, so I had to give it my all.
      I'm glad that you could put into words the images that were latent throughout my arrangement. Those runs, the ballad, the interlude all the way to the ending --- all of those parts you mentioned are also some of my favorite to listen to and to perform.
      I'm gonna pull the Uno reverse card on you too --- I look up to your drive to pursue growth and knowledge in every way, and it's been very rewarding to see your evolution as a result. I'm glad that even though I'm a smol channel, at least I have a very passionate core fanbase. I don't think it's something I could have if I had the # of comments that someone like Animenz is routinely getting. So there is good in my situation as well!

    Absolutely blown away by the nuance and unique voicings that are scattered throughout this arrangement. Every one of your grandiose full arrangements are always chock full of that signature "Chris Luan" sound and touch, something that I always look forward to hearing, and something that has inspired me personally as a pianist as well. Perhaps it's the mutual feeling of chasing perfectionism, painstaking attention to detail, and wanting to squeeze every musical, emotional, and creative drop out of an arrangement, rather than conforming to a regular release schedule, that resonates with me through your work. Perhaps it's the fact that we both discovered Animenz/Ishter in the Jan 2013 timeframe, in the midst of 12th grade, having already stopped taking piano lessons, which led us back to piano and sparked the desire to create the grandest piano arrangements. Even though we don't know each other personally, I feel like you've always felt like a musical brother to me as I listened to your music and learned about the similarities in our musical/life journeys and philosophies.
    If i'm to offer one small piece of constructive criticism, to echo AnimePIanoAngel below, the tempo/rhythm feels ever so slightly off in some places, for brief moments. However, that does not detract from the quality and emotional atmosphere of the arrangement.
    Best of luck in your medical studies! Know that however far you are from home, and from piano, you'll always have dedicated fans like me appreciating your work. I look forward to the day that we can again be blessed by the signature Chris Luan sound.

The technique here is mind boggling and yet doesn't feel like showoff; it works fully in favour of the music, pulling out every last bit of potential and energy it's got. The pacing is incredible, the way you transition from slow to extremely fast and energetic is so well done. The amazing dynamics just add fuel to this. Np, there's something magical about thirds and sixths, followed by fourths and fifths. I don't recall using fourths and fifths as often as I did here compared to other arrangements actually. Bach was really into relationship of motifs and notes spaced out by a fifth interval. I just extended it to other intervals as well. Hope to see you around next time, however far that may be.

    • @ChrisLuan
      @ChrisLuan  3 года назад

      Interesting, could be the piano's tactile feedback. But i don't know, considering this was recorded on Disklavier's midi, which has a limited velocity range when recorded into Reaper compared to a midi file saved onto USB from Yamaha P-255. I used the same VST as I did in the previous upload, Let It Go.

    I kinda reiterate my thoughts on the first WIP you posted some years ago. To say this simply, this is a stellar arrangement, filled with technical ideas but also a lot of emotions. YLIA was actually the anime that gave me the will to start playing piano 5 years ago (I know this sounds cliché af lol), along with the discovery of Animenz' channel. I was just stunned by all the possibilities of the instrument. I used to play oboe in conservatory when I was a kid but I didn't like it at all and didn't find any interest in it. That may sound dumb, but YLIA really renewed my relation towards playing an instrument and music in general. It really is an amazing anime, and you managed to pack everything it contains in this single arrangement. That's quite an amazing feature.
    Well, now, see you in your next upload!

    • @ChrisLuan
      @ChrisLuan  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Louis, I always appreciate your reflective analysis in the comments. I know the anime and the characters are relatable at different levels for different people. But it gives me joy to know that "my music reached someone's heart", just as Kaori's did and eventually Kousei's. I think about why I make arrangements and there are several reasons. A big reason for certain arrangements is to preserve the show in a condensed video that treds on impressionist ideas: the performer supplies the music and hints at things without making them completely explicit. Meanwhile, the audience constructs, shapes, and tunes the amalgam of semi-hints energized by emotion, turning it into a lasting impression on the soul.
      You know, at one point, I think a lot of kids also didn't particularly like playing a musical instrument. I used to be like that too. Life is too short though - so as I learned after reading SubaHibi, as super cliche as it is, "go forth and find happiness. Go fulfill that innate drive that is in life."

    Nice! I can definitely see your own technique written all over this piece! Some ideas are similar to the departures cover you made earlier! Just another suggestion to make it even better. Some of your rit (slowing down) and some rthymn seems to be a little forced and not as natural as it could have been. I thought the rit sounded like what a midi would do rather than a piano player. Other than that, everything is good.

    • @ChrisLuan
      @ChrisLuan  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the critique. It's often hard to find this nowadays. Can you give time stamps?
      I would suspect the "break from tempo" at the start of both choruses? If so, then yeah, I need to make my rubato flow better ---- Ishter has an amazing sense of rubato and I have a lot of work on my part. In general, I do also have some trouble controlling my tempo with challenging songs --- for other examples: Psycho Pass - Namae no Kaibutsu, Your Name - Zen zen zense. I think anyone who is experienced would recommend a metronome. One of my old problems is rushing, ever since I was a kid. It's a really hard habit to kick. At the same time, I was absolutely *ELATED* to get even a decent take of this arrangement - something that seemed like a miracle.
      At the same time, time is such a limited commodity and my time is running out. I think I mentioned this on Discord but ever since COVID-19 pandemic, I've been unable to even practice due to online piano lessons as well as my dad working from home. Don't get me wrong - I'm glad my parents can still find work when so many others are unemployed or struggling. But it does ding me in how I can use my free time. The second half of the story, the reason why I've been more active in the past month than before is I'm moving far away for medical studies.

    • @AnimePianoAngel
      @AnimePianoAngel 3 года назад +2

      @@ChrisLuan 5:07-5:14 take more time, more rubato (right hand passage); 5:14-5:47, you did do a little rubato but it is not as natural as it could have been. 6:30-6:45 It's a difficult passage. I understand that as pianists, we tend to want to play faster when there is a faster passage. It's like every pianist' struggle. However, I do think you started to rush too much. I think from my observation with your playing, you tend to either play on time or play on the faster side for difficult passages. I notice there are some parts in your psycho pass arrangement that also rushes. But it's a less of an issue there because it's fast action theme song whereas this is more of a lyrical song where natural rubato is more important. I thought your departures cover is the best in terms of the control of rubato and tempo. Btw, also your departures cover is one of my favourite anime covers on youtube (even better than Animenz's cover).
      I also don't want you to get the wrong idea. I still love this orange cover very much. It''s probably the best on youtube. You are already one of the best ani-pianist. It's precisely because you play so well, that I want to give some suggestions so that you can play even better!

      @Chris Luan Yeah, I concur with your thought on time. I consider myself to be an optimistic person. However, since this COVID-19 situation, I realised a lot more now, more than ever before. Life is fragile, we could all vanish suddenly, I realise that I must 'live life to the fullest', try my hardest at everything and leave no regret on a daily basis. I do not have all the time in the world even though I am young.
      You are a doctor/or pursing medical studies. It takes a lot of hard work, sacrifice and is a very meaningful career. As such, I want to say to you that I really admire you for not only be in the medical profession but also be one of the best performer/arranger of anime piano songs. This is very rare and awesome! You should be very proud of yourself. Also, I can sort of relate because I know how hard it is to studying in a hard field and also be great at piani. I have many friends in medicine too. I think tbh, you play as good or even better than some music major piano performance students + you have awesome arranging skills they don't have and you do it as a hobby. It's very cool. I look forward to learning some of your arrangements some day.
