I’m so glad you make these kinds of videos. I’m so out of date. Thrilled to see a reference fill. I don’t always want to change apps to do raster work and sometimes it’s just easier to colour and highlight and then add effects to the colour layer without effecting the line art layer. But it sure does help with my awkward style of working haha. This will eliminate the need to switch to krita or clip just to do a few character designs for reference. Enjoying these updates.
Hi. Long time since we spoke. I hope you're doing well. I'm glad you've found this useful. The reference fill looks really useful for those that like to keep lines and fills separate. I personally like to keep them in the same drawing. It makes animation simpler to manage, but I'm glad it's now an option for those that prefer it.
@@DarrenTAnims I’m well thank you! I had a baby after 13yrs of infertility. It’s been a crazy two years but in a good. I can understand why you would prefer that. I tend to lean towards anime or a lot of soft shading where I don’t want the line art to have the same effects or blend modes and I don’t always use black outlines. I also have been raster based for so long I find that I prefer it. But I am only a hobbyist so time spent on my work doesn’t matter to only how comfortable I am working matters to me. I hope one day bubs will want to animate to but we shall see.
@@DraconianRain Aww. Congratulations! I'm really happy for you. It sounds a little crazy, but it's worked out great for you. Regarding effects and blending, I tend to almost exclusively stick to Toonz Raster levels and the use the Palette Filter effect to focus the effects on specific colours (palette entries) in the drawings. It works as though they're in separate columns, but without having to keep multiple columns in time.
@@DarrenTAnims Thank you! I need to try this. A lot of users have. As I said in the video, I don't really see how this helps in animation, except for drawing with vectors, then painting in a separate Smart Raster level. But I know a lot of users that are used to doing this in other software, so I think it'll help them.
@@DarrenTAnims I gave it a shot and it helped with shading having color separate from the lines then using matte in with different blending modes. I could use refer visible and the bucket having clean shading the colors won't spill out. I wouldn't need to look at the preview as much.

Darren! Thks a lot for you good work. At the moment i am following your Udemy course on Tahoma and Opentoonz. I am working with Tahoma 1.3 and i wanne import your roomset in Tahoma but in the preferences-interface in Tahoma there is no Room button, so i can t change anything there. Do you know how this works in Tahoma ?
Thanks for letting me know. They must have removed it since I last used it. You can still use my room set. You just can't switch between them using the preferences dialog. I'll add a clearer set of instructions to the course, but here's what you need to do: If you browse to your layouts folder that is created for your account (here's mine) D:\Program Files (local)\Tahoma\Tahoma2D\tahomastuff\profiles\users\DarrenT\layouts Then rename the Default folder, so you can come back to the default set of rooms if you want to. @@DarrenTAnims hi Darren Thks again. I only don t know how to get your rooms in Tahoma , do have to built them looking at your examples or is there another workaround ? Have a nice day !
How do you put the 'color' Levels behind the lineart ones? I been searching up (just downloaded this program) so I am not sure where to look properly. Documentation is a bit hard to understand properly too, for me ;-;
Most users don't have separate colour levels and line levels. It makes working out your timing less easy and doesn't really help at all, but if you want to then you can move your columns by grabbing the darker bar in the column header (that's where the column (layer) name is.
Hi Darren, I tried latest Tahoma2D for Windows. The UI buttons are way off base with where you click. They seem larger and misaligned. Have you heard of any fixes for this on Windows?
Unless something's changed in this version, this is your system. If you change the scaling back to 100% in your Windows settings, this will probably fix it. Otherwise, you might need to change your screen resolution so that all of your screens match. Or make your screen tablet the main screen. One of those should fix it. Good luck
I'm guessing you're using a vector level. There are issues with filling on vector levels. And this is one of them. It might help to increase slider on the options bar. I think it's called fill depth or something like that.
@@DarrenTAnims Thank you very much for your immediate reply. In fact I am using vector level. I' ll try what you suggested, though I don't think much will change. Anyway, I need to state, once more, my thankfulness for your advice
Hello to the Dominican Republic, from little old England :-) I'm planning to move the lip sync video forwards to be the next video that I make. It'll be showing how to setup and use auto-lip sync in OpenToonz, but will be equally valid for Tahoma.
Hi Darren Great video. Thank you for taking the time for doing and sharing them. I am new to Tahoma2D. If I draw a shape (example: circle) in Tahoma2D and I want to change it to a random radial gradient color is there a way to do that? Could it be done with javascript? Since the fill level has its own layer, I was thinking of using that layer to create the random gradient. scene = new Scene("test.tnz"); scene.getLevel("fillTest"); //fill layer function newGradient() { var randomColor1 = "#" + Math.floor(Math.random()*16777215).toString(16); return randomColor1; } // Create gradient // (x0,y0,r0 (starting circle),x1,y1, r1(ending circle)) var grd = scene.createRadialGradient(100,65,5,100,65,50); grd.addColorStop(0,"white"); grd.addColorStop(1,newGradient()); // Fill with gradient scene.fillStyle = grd; scene.fill(); However, when I ran the script: I received this message: TypeError: Result of expression 'scene.createRadialGradient' [undefined] is not a function. I would appreciate any suggestions.
You can't do as much with script as you'd like. It's only really useful for a few things. I wouldn't even attempt to do this. I don't think it's possible.
