    Kidding.
    Nice work, Ben!

    Sonny Bono seems almost an odd one out to me. It's less "Political Conservatism" and more of "'Straight-Edge' Dorkiness With Psychedelia Tossed In".
    I guess he's on the list due to being a Republican Congressman, later on but he never struck me as a wingnut....just kind of a dork.

    Sonny Bono sounds a lot like Bob Dylan. I should know, when we were younger my brother used to play Bob Dylan until my ears spurted blood.

    I always get a kick out those Janet Greene album covers... the juxtaposition of this wholesome, generic pretty lady headshot with titles like "FASCIST THREAT!" and "COMMIE LIES!"
    Ironically, the "John Birch" types have more in common with those dreaded Fascists than they think... unless they're just stupidly doing the usual "Commie - Nazis" fallacy.
    While I find her dumber than a bag of hammers, I do commend her for standing up against that sleazoid producer's "Casting Couch" nastiness (even if it did cost her a gig, no one should have to go through that...not even cheesy wingnut wannabee-singers).

    Never imagined this episode would be relevant again. That ending bit about the lack of talent has aged amazingly well, considering the quality of conservative raps that somehow go to #1 on iTunes, despite them being made by talentless hacks who only get to number one cause of astroturfing.

      I voted for Donald Trump, the most hated man on Earth, simply because the other option was even worse, Hilary Clinton.

      I voted for Gary Johnson, because I didn't like Trump or Clinton. It's obvious now that he couldn't compete, but Clinton disgusts me with her superiority complex, and Trump angers me with his brash carelessness.

    I have ballad of the Green berets 45. I play it on memorial day, 4th july, and vets day. The Green berets are the Army's version of Navy"Seals".

  • @shoresean1237
    @shoresean1237 9 лет назад +8

    Every time 'Green Berets' plays, I can't help but think about the young son the fallen GB leaves behind, directed to follow in his father's footsteps, into an elite that only three percent of those who try make it into. I can't help but see that leading to a lot of pain for the kid. He may be a better man for the effort, but can you imagine feeling that you're disappointing your martyred father's spirit?
    Response songs very rarely chart (Judy's Turn To Cry from It's My Party) and even more rarely are memorable (My Girl from My Guy). Direct quoting of the prior song seems to weaken the response even further.

    • @McBanditHope
      @McBanditHope 8 лет назад

      Oddly enough, I think the most iconic response song is "Sweet Home Alabama", which was directed toward Neil Young after he recorded a song called "Southern Man"

    • @shoresean1237
      @shoresean1237 8 лет назад

      And that one, reportedly, was done tongue-in-cheek, but was taken seriously by both sides.

    • @McBanditHope
      @McBanditHope 8 лет назад +2

      And I always thought the "joke taken way too seriously" bit was more of a 2010's thing.
      Also, redundant; but "Sweet Home Alabama" rocks harder than an earthquake

    • @shoresean1237
      @shoresean1237 8 лет назад +3

      Oh, that goes way back. 'Little Darlin' by The Diamonds was meant as a parody of the songs of that era. 'Teen Angel' and 'Tell Laura I Love Her' ripped on the Teen Death songs, but are now counted as part of the genre. 'Who Put The Bomp?' by Barry Mann was a self-parody, since he wrote the songs with the odd lyrics he quotes. 'I Started A Joke' was said by Robin Gibb to mean whatever the listener wanted, since he wrote it exasperated with 'deep message' songs in mind.

    Sonny Bono's connection to the Velvet Underground goes deeper than anyone might think. Go and and sing the lyrics of Laugh At Me to "Sunday Morning" and then see if the 2 songs are really even all that different.

    • @jonsrecordcollection7172
      @jonsrecordcollection7172 Год назад

      Of course! Lou Reed & Sonny Bono were both trying to sound like Bob Dylan, which every guy with a half-an-octave vocal range was trying to be in 1965.

    there was an snl bit a ways back (80s or 90s) that profiled an emerging artist in the greenwich village folk scene who was rebelliously conservative. i can't find it anywhere. doubt it's any longer canon to lorne as it's flirting with legitimizing conservative protest. if anyone can find that, please send link.

      I think that bit might have been the basis for the Tim Robbins movie Bob Roberts, which is a movie about a right-wing folk singer who wins a Senate race in Pennsylvania after staging a false flag assassination attempt. Giancarlo Esposito (a.k.a. Gus Fring of the Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul universe) plays an investigative journalist in the movie.

    Though I consider myself Left and have no problem with protest songs, I always found "Eve of Destruction" too irritating and also agree that Barry McGuire singing sounded constipated (I prefer stuff like the somber but more pleasant-sounding Buffalo Springfield's 'For What It's Worth' or uplifting Hippie anthems like The Fifth Dimension's 'Age of Aquarius / Let the Sun Shine In' or The Beatle's 'All You Need Is Love')...
    ...however, the idiots aping him are worse. Unless they're casting themselves as a proto - Weird Al-esque satire of Barry McGuire, they had a bad case of "Let's steal everything! The clothes, the constipated voice, the melody, etc. because 'Originality" is a Commie plot".
    ----
    Sonny Bono's weirdness has some passable psychedelia / 60s Pop sound but he ruins it with stuff about sturgeons / virgins and that over the top harmonica. He comes off as less a raving Neo-Con and more a mildly-Conservative Hippie-wannabee straight-edger... like, he wants to be "cool" and groovy with the rock music, long hair, funky clothes and general 60s Counterculture aesthetic but he's just not into the stuff that makes it "Counterculture"... He looks like a poor dorky poseur who's too Conservative for Flower-Power but too Progressive for Goldwater - set.
    It's live someone who loves the look and fashion sense of certain subcultures but who don't really fit in with the ethos, worldview, etc. of said subculture.

    Conservative Folk is as much an oxymoron as Liberal Country. As in country music has pretty much been where conservatism has lived in the music world. Even more so when you hear songs after 9/11/2001.
