After having just tested the Nikon Coolpix L110, the 14-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S8000 was a cool breeze of relief. Both cameras shared a lot in common in terms of controls and shooting features, but the Coolpix S8000 offered a stellar color station that allowed us to add significant life to our pictures that many other cameras couldn't match. We also got a 10x optical zoom wide-angle lens, rear control ring, and sleek, sexy architecture. Although image and video quality was on par with the Coolpix L110, it was the S8000's color options that really made it our favorite compact to shoot with during our batch testing with the Nikon Coolpix L110, Fujifilm Finepix F80EXR, and Fujifilm Finepix Z700EXR.
I like your review very much. You give a lot of info, the good and the bad, show a lot of photos and videos from the product, and give comparison info. Some technology reviewers never have anything negative to say about the products they review. (Years ago, someone pointed out to me that ___ magazine wouldn't say anything bad about a product, even if it blew up on the test bench.)
the more i research and compare cameras the more im confused which one to get. I need a simple point and shoot (not dslr or a camcorder) that shoots decent to better HD video. I plan to take it inside an arena concert where lighting it low and music loud. I've seen on youtube canon sx210 and lumix tz have a blue streaking problem. the sony hx5v is kinda dark when shooting video. Any others you can recommend?
The S8000 is a competent camera. It has its drawbacks (location of the pop-up flash, noise performance, CCD image processor rather than a CMOS IP, digital zoom-only when recording video, chroming in some images, etc) but it's quite a capable camera with a superb macro mode, 10x optical zoom, extra pixels to work with in post-processing, a large rear screen (IMHO the best out there in the point-and-shoot market) and so on. I've achieved some nice shots:

@jgazteca thx for the input. I winded up getting the Lumix zs7. So far I like it! takes wonderful pics and video. I took it to a rock concert where the audio level is extreme and it didn't come out distorted. which was the main reason why I bought the camera. =)
Sooo many cameras.....which one to choose?!?
@jarvey123 It's deliberately limited to 29-30mins. But who records continuous video on a point-and-shoot anyway?
Would You recommend the Nikon S8000 or the Samsung WB650
There's an annoying high pitch noise on every video taken with this model from nikon. Could you check that out? Thanks
What camera would you recommend for people with kids and lots of outings? Plus I need one with great video. I saw some of your reviews for low light and club goers but that's not me.
I would like to buy a camera, but for me is really important to make great videos with it. Which camera would you recommend?
thanks. this review is wayyyy much better than those "pro video" that shot in lab"
For those whom cares about image quality; how good you expect from a small CCD anyway..
Hi team, Thanx for the revie of Coolpix 8000 and the other one for SX210 IS. I am a bit confusd as I want tp go in for one with good picture quality, good optical zoom, HD video, compact design etc.
I have selected nikon 8100, Canon SX 120 IS, SX 210 IS, Lumix ZS7. Can you pls recommend. will appreciate your help
what cam can u recommend that you think is best as of now. im trying to search for a cam e.
Awesome camera, fits right in shirt pocket. Excellent low light performance- in fireworks/night mode the iris stayed open for about 4 seconds just soaking in full moonlight. Auto object tracking, smile recognition. etc etc People will nit pick this camera but it doesn't deminish it's excellent performance. Oh, and it's F'G FAST !!! AND STABLE. Even if you have shakey hands or are moving, this camera will take perfectly clear pics. Batter power is good, I got 203 max res photos & 20 min video.
got it today, but when i take picture it look likes its painted with brush :S :? what settings u recommended using?
what digital camera is good for recording rock shows?
which one is better. the the nikon coolpix s8000 or the fujifilm finepix f80exr?
@infosyncvideos if u had to choose between the s8000 and Sony h55 which would it be and why?
Hi, I'm looking for a camera that has a high optical zoom (like this one) in the price range around $100 to $250. Would you recommend this camera? And does this camera let you zoom while taking videos? And how great is the macro on this camera? Sorry for all the questions. Please respond. I need a camera with a nice macro and great focusing lens. Thanks.
which 1 should i go for???
nikon s8000 or sony t99
Why dont i have the same setting options on the S8000 i just bought? Is there a software upgrade or something that I am missing?
@jgazteca Are you shooting indoors or will this be outside in the day? I'm looking for a camera where it take good photos/video insider an arena concert with low lighting. So.. can you let me know how it turns out for you? satisfied or not? thanks! Also, I hear this camera is more for photos but not video so I'd value your opinion. btw, 4gb is alot but if you plan to keep it on throughout the whole concert you might want more. and spare battery.
@infosyncvideos i have the same question. less than $350.
Ibought about when this video was uploaded. The first bad thing I noticed was how dark the video was when the video file was exported to my computer. Is it possible to fix this or at least make it better?
I bought this camera recently and can only get 30 minute long videos. i dont know if this is because that is all the camera allows or because i only have a 2gb memory card. does anyone know? i dont want to buy a new memory card only to find out that the camera only allows video recording of up to 30 minutes.
I have this one. not happy at all. while it worked properly it was fine. the problems started when the on off button got erratic. it took ages to get started at times, the lens came out and receded almost immediately, that never stopped, in the end i dropped it on the concrete and now its like, happy go lucky
Can u zoom at the video mode?
Please review SAMSUNG PL200!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@matsas16193 It only does digital zoom in video mode. It looks like ass. :( I think you can zoom upto 2x. Not good.
@debojyotis I would definitely go with s8100
I bought this camera, but realised that when making movies the audio has a constant pitched noise in high frequences. And I ask myself: why is there the choice to have stereo, if there is a noise stereo? Why the seller tried to convince me that this sound is normal for this kind of cameras. I had a Pentax Optio E35, lower quality and lower price than the Nikon S8000 and this noise doesn't exist. The Nikon S8000 is a camera for photo, but not for videos. I really feel fooled. Thank you Nikon.
@mcrazza Wow...That's poor!:( Anyway thanks for the reply!
ohh why everyone saying "dont buy niko s8000, buy panasonic"
@faizangmail I Agree 100%%%%%
You say Nikon wrong
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo i got the L110 crap..
You guys spit at every camera on your reviews, its like watching which one is worse!
