    You didn't even remotely address the question you raised in the title of the video! While informative, very misleading, and very disappointing. I would like to see a video actually dedicated to this question.

    the problem is that efficiency is not everything, if its more expensive, harder to maintain and less durable than conventional energy sources, no one will be interested. it already takes so long to pay for itself, and by then the solar panel will be at the end of its life... so as soon as you are done paying for it, you already need to replace the old one

      +Peter Jörgenson (LemonBird) Everything is about economics, dipshit. If it costs a fortune to produce solar energy, then that means it is CONSUMING vast amount of resources in its production. And chances are that the manufacturing processes involved utilize large sums of fossil fuels and hazardous chemicals. D'oh!

      +TheRealNaxos That seems obvious. There are a lot of industrial systems that need to run 100% at peak, like sewage treatment and nuclear plant regulators. Solar can power 1/3rd of the world, once scaled up, which is good enough for me.

      Right but heterogeneous green energy grids will be ready before that, so solar will never NEED to run the world itself.

      +phxtonash Solar could actually power the entire world's needs right now, and the total amount of solar panels needed to do so would take about the amount of space as Nevada. Some people balk at that size, like "The size of Nevada! That's completely unfeasible!" when in reality if one in three households had solar panels, we'd be good to go.

    I have a question: I live in Southern California where we are very much encouraged to recycle, but I've read that you are supposed to thoroughly rinse plastics before putting them in the recycling. But we are in a horrible drought. So is it better to use water and rinse everything out, not recycle, or just throw it in the bin dirty?

    you could probably replace your home lighting with LEDs on a closed DC system connected to a battery (charged by solar panels) for just a couple hundred dollars (you loose allot of efficiency in AC LED lightbulbs by converting the high voltage AC to low voltage DC so you might aswell just use a DC system for both simplicity and efficiency)

    First, get a non-conductive material, put a layer of conductive material on top of it. Then, make the conductor as black as possible; minimize on reflected light. The blacker, the better. Cover it up with something transparent, fill it with water, and place a conduit, pipe, or straw in the container to allow the water to flow in whatever direction you desire. Perhaps place heavy particles in there, such as lead, bismuth, or tungsten, so that the device can retain more kinetic energy.
    Not much of a solar panel, but it's hot.

    I have a question for you guys. I saw a commercial that bemoaned ethanol for converting grasslands into corn fields, claiming that this would lead to an increase in greenhouse gasses. Now my impression was, both are types of plants, so they should convert the same amount of CO2, and while there is some CO2 cost in actually farming the land due to tractors, the fields themselves would be CO2 neutral compared to each other. So what are the facts? Is there a serious difference between an acre of grass and an acre of corn? How much CO2 would be spent harvesting the fields? What if the farm switched to green tractors? More research is needed!

    But generating power using fusion power and then having advanced batteries in cars.(unless you are Bethesda and put a fusion reactor on each car...)is so much better :D!

    Solar energy might be a viable option closer to the equator, provided that you have batteries to store energy for the night, but here in canada, we get very little sunlight in winter, when our energy use is at it's highest, not to mention that the panels would get repeatedly covered by snow.

      solar panels become more efficient when its cold. even with less light the difference isnt all that big. (tho complete darkness would still be an issue)

      In winter we can get less than 9 hours of daylight and the angle of the sun is quite severe, the temperature can drop to -30°C at night (without windchill), so the amount of energy required for heating is enormous, I'm not saying solar panels are useless, but I can't see how it could possibly be used as the only source of energy.

      Keven Harvey for sure, i live in finland which has pretty much the same conditions. my point wasnt about the impossibility of solar panels being used as a sole source, just that they actually work surprisingly well even up north, due to the increased efficiency in cold temperatures.

    This is the rare case where a video that uses a question as a title should be answering with a simple "yes". In the long term, everything is already solar powered. It is just that the solar energy got stored by some natural system such as the creation of oil. We can do what the natural system did.

    Regarding flying cars, we do have them. They're just not designed to look like cars because we would need unthinkable amounts of power and noise to run them. These flying cars, often called "Helicopters" are used by thousands of people every day.
    The problem with them, however, is that they are expensive, consume more fuel than regular cars, CANNOT BE MADE TO OPERATE OFF BATTERY POWER FOR EXTENDED PERIODS and in general are excessively loud. They are also moderately dangerous and parking them is a serious problem.
    The thing is, for some very good reasons, the helicopter has not had a "Model T." There has been no industrial-scale production of cheap helicopters for the working class, and there is no infrastructure to support helicopter commute by the masses. It's also not exactly green to be burning gas or jet fuel or even methane in your chopper commute, and would further exacerbate noise pollution.
    Not to mention idiots would run these giant tanks of fuel and whirling blades into cliff-sides and buildings.

    Storage is the real problem. 90% efficient panels won't change the world unless we have viable storage methods. You guys should do a video on smart grids or storage advances.

"Can we switch to 100% renewables?" would be the much more realistic and much more relevant question. And then "What are the costs of switching and what are the costs of not switching?" as a follow-up.

    In my country, Yemen, the national power grid shut down about 10 months ago, with the absence of fossil fuel, we were forced to turn to solar energy for electrisity. Now that most homes and fasilities are running on solar, we realize how dumb we were ignoring it all along.

    I have a question about rainbows. I understand that rainbow is formed by twice TIR inside a water drop but why the band of rainbow formed in the sky is always curved somewhat elliptical or parabolic why not any other shape.

      +Adam Lawrence Solar panels have been making massive gains in the price and efficiency department and they really do look like they could turn the tables on fossil fuel in our lifetime if progress keeps its pace. Once its efficient enough then companies will start to want offering said successful product out to the public in higher demand which means more production and when there is more production the processes used to produce improve and you get a cheaper product that is still just as efficient.

      im thinkin solar power could make a bigger difference in personal level. i mean there are stuff like paints that can capture some solar power, window coatings that use the ultraviolet and infrared to transform that into energy (leaving the visible spectrum untouched). also personal windmills that you could mount on your rooftop, that look like a ball instead of the traditional bladed model.
      stuff like that. stuff everyone can use while building a house.
      im not sure about other countries, but in finland the electric company is obligated to buy any excess electricity a house produces, so in theory you could sell some of it back to reduce the cost of your electric bill during the times you dont get either sunlight or wind.
      or it could be used to power your electric car for instance.
      even today, if you do something like this, you are able to save some money. the equipment will pay itself back in the long run, altho the original investment is somewhat costly and it does require some maintenance.

    MORE INFO FOR THOSE INTERESTEDPerovskites are awesome BUT of serious concern is how stable they are in air: metal-organic hybrids tend not to do so well in the presence of oxygen and water. This is where there is also a lot of research at the moment: cheap and sturdy methods of keeping oxygen and water out.Additionally there's some cool research going into what are known as Quantum Dot Solar Cells. Also cheap to produce, more stable I air and have the potential to break what's known as the Shockley-Queisser Limit", which caps Silicon solar panels (or any panel mad with only one active material) at 33%. Not so with Quantum Dots, but at the moment they're hovering around 10% efficiency which isn't very good yet.

    Im surprised you guys didnt notice or mention the thirteen year old Aidan Dwyer who made extremely efficient solar panels using the Fibonacci Sequence. His model provides a 20-50% boost over the normal uniform solar panels.

    World energy consumption (ca.)
    80 % - Coal, gas and oil
    10% - Renewable
    10% - Nuclear
    Coal, oil and gas: Bad for the environment.
    Renewable: Good for the environment, but can not meet energy demand.
    Nuclear: Co2 neutral, can meet world energy demand. (But has a bad reputation)
    We have been trying to make renewable energy effective enough for many years but not seeing adequate progress. Meanwhile were using "dirty" energy to meet 80% of our demand. How environmentally just is that? We need to take use of modern nuclear power before it is to late.
    Google it people, it might just change your mind.
    It certainly changed mine.

    Solar is not the power of the future, unless we switch to using something like rectennas instead of the kind we use now. The kind we use now also requires materials that are produced with lots of toxic chemical byproducts. I would like to see an honest video about the negative environmental effects of wind and solar, since people don't seem to know about them.

    When Australia developed the Sliver Cell Solar tech, instead of using it and selling it to the world to help Australia, as usual Australian tech sold the rights overseas so someone else could develop it, because Australian companies don't like to take risk! We are the sit back, let someone else make it work then we'll buy it rather than invest in developing usable tech.
    If that isn't bad enough, in a country with one of the most sunny days in the world, the Australian government still refuses to help the solar industry to develop, but more over won't support the populace from using it. As a result, domestic use of solar tech in Australia is miniscule.

    can solar power, that uses the photons from the sun, and then is used to power homes, cars, and offices, be used in such a manor that reduces the amount of sun rays that heats the planet's surface? I am obviously no expert, but it seems like it could help along with using less pollution type power sources.

    Until solar panels reach 80% efficiency and cost less than grand to produce 63 kWh a day it'll still be a difficult sell, due to the fact that to be independent of the grid cost about the same as a car. With higher maintenance cost...

    Everything could eventually be powered by solar panels but it wouldn't be smart because solar energy eventually dissipates as heat into the atmosphere. Photosynthetic trees and plants are a more effective cooling system because they absorb and store sunlight, which prevents it from heating up the ground under it in the first place. The stored energy is then released in fall and spring when fallen leaves compost.
    Solar energy can be used for everything, but everything currently running on electrical power is already too much. Even if CO2 levels can be reversed to blanket less heat, additional heat in the atmosphere from any source dries the air and prevents it from condensing and precipitating. For adequate rainfall, reforestation combined with reduced energy consumption is needed to cool down hot areas and revitalize the water cycle.

    Solar and wind is now powering at increasing rates our houses, our vehicles, our industries. New wind is 2.5 cents and new US solar is 5 cents a kilowatt hour. Plug in our vehicles and save $1,500 a year by eliminating buying tanks of gasoline. Max out building insulation and then install roof top solar. I recommend SunPower with highest efficiency and cradle to cradle certified materials for clean disassembly and remanufacturing.

    The efficiency of a solar panel does not make one bit of difference. The fuel is free. It is the cost per watt which is the most important number. Get that down, and you will see more solar panels, regardless of their efficiency.

    if pervoskite-based cells are half the cost of silicon (not silicone!!) it would make them significantly cheaper than fossil fuels... silicon is already roughly at the cost/watt level of traditional carbon power

    The smart move now is to switch to thorium molten salt reactors for a stable power source while building up solar, wind, and hydro sources. Too bad ignorance, fear, and bottom lines keep us burning coal.

    More efficient solar panels are great, but according to Elon Musk, they are no longer the most significant factor retarding large scale adoption of solar power. The cost of installation and even more, the cost of storage technology are now more pivotal. Significant strides are being made in those other areas as well of course. It is already the case that solar power is cheaper than conventional power sources in some areas for some uses. The costs of solar systems will continue to decline, while the costs of fossil fuels will very likely continue to rise. It is an inevitably that at some point, very much within the lifetimes of most reading this, that solar will be sufficiently cheaper than fossil fuels, that nobody in their right mind will burn it for power.

    Solar panels aren't expensive. Generating electricity is cheap. Storing it is where we run into problems.

    Simple answer, yes, we can and will power everything with solar and wind, one day. I work in the utility renewable energy industry and know that solar and wind are capturing virtually every new utility new capacity contract, with nat. gas acting as peaker and back-up plants. Neither coal nor nuclear win any new contracts, they're dead technologies.

    Why not just Nuclear? It is safer than conventional power, far more efficient and cheaper than solar panels, and basically the most green option of any power source.

      TheAwesomeGamersDK1 I never said renewable, but if you go by that nothing is really renewable. The Sun might have a very long life span but its technology needs to improve greatly to make solar power the only source of energy. Plus the techniques for extracting materials and building them need to be far better. And I will not say that is it impossible but if you want to focus short term (the next hundred years minimum) I think that nuclear power is reasonable.

    Thanks for the really useful information, but you didn't answer the question. When you ask if any renewable could power everything, you should be talking about power grid stability. Something like this: www.pri.org/stories/2015-04-07/when-grid-says-no-wind-and-solar-power-companys-technology-helps-it-say-yes-again Basically, you need large battery-power plants to make a power grid stable.
