I fretted over this problem all night I looked at prices to buy a new Printer, made no heads or tails of HP support website, I knew that mine was a wheel failure but didn’t know how to see it, I’m a disabled Vet with only one good eye and live by myself, I had looked at others videos on this but none of them were any good and didn’t show very good skills, I had even went down the road of thinking I could get to the problem by removing the part and fixing it. That was until I came upon your video and yours was not even the same printer as mine but had the same paper pickup but you my good man saved the day showing how you used a mirror that was a stroke of genius, for now I have the wheel back on the splines but still have to get some glue on that wheel and splines. Huge thank you!!! May God bless you.

5 years after this post and you've saved another printer from the trash heap. My family wanted to add a printer to the second floor of our house for convenience, and I remembered I had an old, wireless printer (HP C309A) stored unused in a closet for the last 6 years. Pulled it out, and although it fired up and joined my wireless network just fine, it had this exact, same gear issue and wouldn't feed the paper. The upside-down-use-mirror-to-glue-gear trick worked like a champ, and with a new set of non-OEM, compatible ink cartridges we're off and running again for a mere $15! Thanx!

Oh my god THANK YOU!!! this was exactly what was wrong with my printer. I actually just slid etc gear back in place and there is a little metal collar on the drive shaft that holds in in place so I didn't have to epoxy it this time..but I'll know the next step if it happens again in the future! I agree HP would have probably told me the repair is 200 $ vs a new printer being 99$ and I HATE the waste being generated by these practices. You are doing a great service to your fellow humans and the planet so THANK YOU for looking into this.

Dude I brought my printer back in 2010 and i still have it. it gave out on me and I could never figure it out. I spent countless hours searching the web and could not find anything but a reset and cleaning the wheels. It had been in the box for the past 3 years and I have not used it nor have I gotten a new one. Today I decided to take it out and give it another go at trying to fix it and came across your video and by fucking george you gave me revelation. it worked. Thank you so much for this! Thanks for posting this fix. My Officejet 6500 e709n wouldn't print and keep getting "out of paper" message the other day. So I had to manually feed it to get the paper in as I needed to print something urgent. After that I looked to see what could cause it to not feed. I noticed the roller wasn't rolling. So I came to RUclips to find a solution. And I found your/this post. I did everything you did. I used a mirror to look at the rolling gears as you did. I noticed that the plastic gear was stripped on the long metal rod so when the rod turned the gear on that rod didn't. I had some JB Weld epoxy. It was the grey 16 hour time cured one. Used the mirror and toothpicks to to apply the epoxy. And since it was grey, it was easy to see where I applied it to the gear and the rod. I took my time. I waited 24 hour to let it fully cured. And now just tried it and I works perfectly. You saved me several hundred $$. Thanks again.

Thank you so so much!. I have an HP 6700 Premium. Spent ages trawling internet to try to fix my paper issue - cleaned all rollers, done all the resets, went through all of HP's recommendations - everything ended up telling me I'd need to either send into an expensive repair or just get a new printer. I did exactly as you described and immediately discovered the gear issue and with some fiddling managed to get the gear on again and it's working! Thank you! I've not glued it yet though. May I ask how did you apply the epoxy without the glue actually going into the other gears? Everything is upside down (accessing using the mirror) and I could barely get my finger in to move the gear back in (needed some force, and my printer is smaller space than on yours) let alone manipulate epoxy to stop it going where I don't want it to? Did you put epoxy either side of the gear to hold it in place, or on the the part of the shaft where you eventually push the gear onto? Do you think superglue would work, as that's all I have and it says it'll join plastics and metal. Many thanks.

This must be a common issue with HP printers. I have never been a fan of them and never bought one but someone gave me a broken that cost about $600.00. There's no way in hell that I would pay that kinda money for some plastic crap but I'll take it for free. After looking at it for awhile, I came to the same conclusion as to the issue just as you did, but I wasn't about to disassemble the thing after seeing how much work it was. But then I found your video. I think that I will give it a try. Good find.

Brilliant! Fantastic idea, it worked also for me with epoxy glue. We should spread more this idea because thousands (hundreds of...) users must have the same problem caused by programmed obsolescence! When I think of the nonsense HP is spreading about this problem.....
Added: I made a hole under the printer, just below the mechanism in order to make the epoxy repair more comfortable. I made the hole using a heated sharpened iron (wide screwdriver, or whatever you have). When you apply epoxy, be carefull not to glue nearby gears together! If it happens (to me for example :-) just use a cutter to cut and suppress the extra glued parts.
NOW EVERYTHING WORKS LIKE A CHARM ! Thank's Tiger!

This is an AWESOME video. I believe I just repaired an HP Officejet 6700 I got for free at my local recycling center!!! It's a $400+ machine. Had exactly the same problem. I just used JB Weld, going to let it dry till I get home from work tomorrow. I'll let you know. To work on it directly, instead of with a mirror, I flipped the printer over and drilled three 3/8" diameter holes. One is right over the gear in question. I'll post a pic if I can with measurements for others. THANKS AGAIN!!! John G. Hollis, NH

My HP 6700 Officejet has the same mechanism. All I did was slide the gear back into place with my finger using the mirror. It is staying in place and printing now. A suggestion - instead of gluing the gear to the splined part of the shaft, simply slide the gear back into its proper place, then put a small spot of glue on the shaft on both sides of the gear. It doesn't have to be all the way around, just in one spot and it will prevent the gear from sliding sideways without actually trying to glue the plastic and metal together. I'm going to try Goop or some similar glue which will adhere well to the metal shaft - just wait a while for it to set up.

This was right on track for our issue for the HP 7520. one day it was working fine and the next day we have "out of paper" messages. We used a bent piece of wire to get the epoxy up there. Just a dab to keep the gear in place is all it took and overnight to dry. I figured, it wouldn't hurt to try this repair and the worst would mean I have to purchase a new printer of which HP recommended. Thank You!

After two attempts, success- Thank you!
I bought this printer for $5 from a thrift store in what looked like near perfect/never used condition. Ran into this error off the bat. I stuck a mirror under there and saw that the gear had slipped out of place. I made a first attempt and focused on getting the gear aligned over the threads… it looked to me at first like it had worked, as the gear stayed in place, but indeed, the rod was spinning inside the gear but not turning it. I put it away for a week or two and then went back and realized what the video was saying about getting the gear to turn. So I pushed the gear off and swabbed off the epoxy, first with alcohol on some Q tips and then getting the last of it off with a magic eraser. Cleaned it and let it dry and tried again with a lot more epoxy. I was nervous the gears would stick together but I fiddled with them a few times before going to bed and said a prayer. Lo and behold in the morning, the paper pick up mechanism works perfectly and I’m in business! Thanks again

Thank you! This was the issue with my HP Photosmart Premium (Photosmart C309a) too! After trying cleaning the rollers multiple times, followed this video and checked that gear train with a mirror. My drive gear was in place, and I could see the splined/toothed section of the shaft was spinning, but the gear wasn't turning. Seems whatever internal structure in the inner hole of the gear that was supposed to mate with the spline 'teeth' of the drive rod had gotten stripped over the years? A bit of Gorilla Glue (expanding glue) did the trick for me: slid gear to the side, put dot of glue on the splined area, slide gear back, wait a day, then tried printing, and it worked just fine!
Seems this may be a fault with this specific model line? Might be worth putting the name of the printer in the name or description of this video, to make it easier for others to find in the future!

Perfect! Thanks for the video. Such a simple fix, and HP thinks cleaning the rollers will help! I got a little epoxy on the gears, too, but it doesn't affect their rotation. My mom was thinking of buying a new printer and you saved her a bunch of money!

I have this exact printer. It stopped working a few years back so I just packed it away. I'm guessing during the storage the gear must have split in half and fallen off. Is there a way to repair this printer by purchasing the gear?

I have an HP LaserJet PRO MFP M225. Yes, I cleaned the rollers and the separation pad as suggested in the manual. It still doesn't pick up the paper. Your video prompted me to inspect the roller above the separation pad. When I press scan, I notice that the roller above doesn't touch or drop down onto the paper. The roller doesn't spin either. What do you suggest as the next step? I don't want to damage it as it is a workplace scanner.

Thank you so much!!! I cleaned our rollers several times per HP and the roller would still not move to pick up the paper. Took a mirror and found out my gear was slid way too far to the right. It is now fixed. PS super glue also worked great.

Thank you!! This was most helpfull. I chose to drill a wide enough hole in the paper basket right across the location of the gear. For this purpose, first I drilled a pilot hole then I used a hole saw 2 1/8 inch. This provide me with direct access to the gear and axel where I applied the epoxy.

Exactly the issue with my printer. You could hear the gears grinding. Slid the gear off the splines, put on some super glue with a q-tip while spinning the shaft, and slid the gear back over. A bit tricky since you have to slide it over and roughly center it before the glue sets in seconds. If you get it right, though, you're printing within a minute of finishing.

Question: Looks like this is the problem, thank you ! However, regular airplane model glue did not work. I think the inside of the plastic gear is stripped, so I need a stronger bond. What type of epoxy did you use ? There seem to be 50+ choices on Amazon or Home Depot. I saw this one recommended for plastic to metal: Loctite Epoxy Plastic Bonder 0.85-Fluid Ounce Syringe (1363118 )

I have a few printers (C6150, C7280, C8180) that use the 02 cartridges that do the same thing, I think they are gear problems. I was hoping your printer used the same drive mechanism. Unfortunately there is no way to remove the output paper tray (at least I never figured out how to do it) which would be a good way to check.

I knew what was happening by feel - not smart enough to use a mirror. Tried to take it apart and gave up. The most vulnerable part is in the most inaccessible place. HP could rethink this. Do they want to?
Any way thanks for the very clever solution and the quality video..

Thank you for the excellent video. My gear also came off the shaft spline after many years, but was still very tight (when trying to put the black gear back over the shaft spline), so I just forced it back into place with an angled needle nose pliers. It was impossible to get over the spline just using my fingers. My wife is very partial to this HP printer for printing greeting cards, since the actual print output (especially the blacks) is superior to both the epson and canon photo printers I've owned.

PiedmontTiger using a bent set of tweezers, wooden qtip end worked well getting the quick drying epoxy on the grooves. Once I slid the gear back into place. I did what you mentioned and then I put it on the shaft to the left of the gear.
Been working since I used the epoxy. Thanks for your video!

Thanks for the great video. I have a HP 7520 and I like your suggestion to use the Mirror. I used Gorilla Glue and have fixed my machine. My only 'bad' experience is I turned my printer on its right side for a few minutes, and a lot of black ink leaked out and made a huge mess on my desk and printer. So don't do what I did!
