You really are the definition of laid back and "Don't stress, it's just a scratch" while you allow death to breath down your neck. Keep up the wonderful content and congrats to you and your wife! Wishing the best for you in the New Year Zak !
Hey Zak, it’s totally worth it to sacrifice some fish to make bait. Fish caught with bait are dramatically larger than fish caught without bait, so you get a lot more calories and oil for every fish. I usually cut up the first bass, burbot, or salmon I catch as they have the best yield of bait, then I fish until I run out of bait, but the fish size increase is substantial
Zak, you’re absolutely brilliant! The way you play, interact with us, and stay so genuine makes your videos amazing. This is your journey, and we’re just lucky to be along for the ride-no matter what, as long as you’re having fun, that matters most :)
It's times like this that I'm reminded by the game that, no matter how comfy you think you are, no matter how safe you think you might be, or geared and kitted out you've gotten, a wolf or two can completely ruin your day.
As someone who's died at least once sleeping through an infection I don't know how you survived that! To be honest, it was quite nice seeing you play a little flustered (by your standards anyway!) - i.e. going after the birch bark on such low health when you didn't really need to. But made for an interesting watch!
I had scurvy risk recently as well as parasites, also in Mystery Lake. It really helps to have multiple tip ups just outside a fishing hut. That way you can let them them fish for themselves, grab periodic naps, and periodically clear the holes, whilst keeping warm from the fire. Cured them both, then died later after deciding to 'check out bleak inlet'.
I've been finding Quonset to be an incredibly fun base to stay at this new update. You can't get a more convenient base for the trader, and you have a whole empty garage to customize. There's lots of wood nearby to build furniture, and there's lots of nearby houses to steal rugs and other decorations from for extra coziness. It has actually stolen my heart from Camp office and PV farmhouse. Plus it's really bright in there during an aurora. Brand new #1 S-tier Oh, and it's a coastal base so you never run out of salt for the curing box either, even if the trader didn't exist
I've already made PV farmhouse a trappers dream home. The quonset garage is now my outpost where I store tons of lamp oil, feathers, anything and everything the trader needs. It works well enough when I'm on trading runs but PV farmhouse is just too versatile
Hey Zak, food for thought... when traveling long distances moving gear.. wielding dual travois is a great strategy.. saves a lot of time and walking... let me explain.. you're loaded up dragging through the transfer pass.. you hit the rail car in the tunnel.. you have to empty the travois and drop a bunch of stuff on the ground.. pick the travois, and walk the pinch to the other side, drop the sled and go back, pick up each item one at a time. and then the walk, load up and go...... with 2 you leave the first one at the pinch, take what you can carry, run the pinch, drop the second travois, load up , run back, quickly transfer the leftovers, pick up sled 1 and run the pinch.. load up and go... saves a lot of clicking of the mouse.. as well.. 2 travois is twice the distance you can travel before needing repairs... cheers
I was really expecting a calmer relaxed episode, with fishing, sitting by the campfire, listening to stories, maybe working on the base. I was not expecting you to be fighting for your life multiple times. Really shows how things can turn quickly in this game, it's what makes it such an amazing and exciting game as well, anything can happen! And it also shows how even the best of us, like you Zak who is a master of this game, almost died because of the most basic, but human mistake; forgetting/not paying attention. You got the parasites because you ate the wrong meat, you got the infection because you forgot about it. Not to call you out, really I just mean to say it's so quick to happen, any of us could have made that mistake. It's these mistakes that cost us so much, yet they appear to be so small, just a slight change of focus and it is done. But anyway, you handled it all great as usual, keep up the good work and vids, and keep surviving! Btw Zak, the Infection affliction does not prevent healing, it just makes you take 5% condition loss every hour, and coupled with your Scurvy which is 0.5% condition loss per hour. So it was a battle of healing from sleeping, and losing condition from your afflictions.
Recovering from a near death condition is one of the most exciting part of the game, but I never want to do it in my own run (although I occasionally have to do it after my mistakes). So I appreciate your video showing such a spectacle!
After the recovery you mentioned a hypothesis about what happened, which was erroneous. You were incredibly lucky to live through that first sleep. You gained just enough health while still in the infection risk stage to counteract the loss incurred by the infection. I think even a few more minutes of sleep and the condition loss from the infection would have killed you. Your hypothesis that infection prevents condition recovery is not correct, you just hit a perfect balance!
Thanks for all you do ..i killed a cougar after watching your "science" on it.Though I did get lacerations. That was fun! Your videos are very helpful and enjoyable. I noticed you had like 75 percent infection risk when you went to sleep..what a survivor you are! "You'll be fine Astrid, its nothing"😄
Zac every second episode after nearly dying again "Wow that was too close, we're going to be more careful from now on so this doesnt happen again!" Fool me once, I dont believe it anymore 😂
A bit off topic from this episode but connected to the previous ones where you were arranging trapper's. One of my favorite mods is the "Place anywhere" mod. It's a little game-y, in the sense it can be (mis)used to place stuff in places that look comical, but it is an excellent mod when used to place stuff in an organized manner. The size of the hit boxes are as per the object in question. Plus you can stack stuff on top of each other. It's a great tool to organize. The default hit boxes are ridiculous.
About batteries. My voyager survivor was sent back to BlackRock prison to retrieve bulletproof vest. This piece of equipment seems to have use now since the cougar is in play. Found it and notices 6 new car batteries in the prison. Together with 3 on the way he pulled out from cars earlier.
I was today years old when I realized that my “custom interloper” run was not counting towards any feat progress. I’m almost 200 days in, and I firmly believed that I was making progress in those feats. The only difference between my “custom interloper” and regular interloper is that the spawns of items are high, and the revolver and rifle can spawn. Other then that, everything is interloper difficulty.
Wouldn't have used the burdock for teas. Those are the limiting factor for Preppers Pies which give 25% condition. I always carry one of those with me once I found the recipe.
I yelled at phone like crazy: "Dont forget cure infection risk" haha but everything ended good. Also congrats on healing scurvy that damn affliction deal ,i think, about 0.5% healt damage and reduce your carrying capacity by 5 kg.
I always try to have pelt/hides in different buildings, you never know when you're going to get stuck by a blizzard or a bear mauling and want something to do while waiting. I would have definitely come back to trapper after such a brutal wolf attack, and the blizzard... You really need a cougar knife for defense ! That episode really had too much red lining !!! I hope you secretly have back up saves, that would have been awful to end the run because of an infection... or maybe you'll have cheated death. That would have hopefully cured the scurvy and parasites. 48:25 you may want to keep some green birch sapling for the new trader bow. 58:11 That lockbox was empty for me, not sure if I was too late and the item decayed or if it's always empty. Looks like you recorded some time ago, the trader now want only 1 battery for these trades (or maybe it's because you took that trade earlier ? In that case, you should not complete that trade, only the other items and retake the recipe trade.) 1:10:00 The small fish don't give vitamin C :(
@@Zaknafein You don't have to cancel the trade, just validate one of the other object in the trade and retake the battery trade another time. And if I understand correctly the reputation system, you just have to make another trade to increase it, you just need 5 trades to start the quest, and can do several on the same night if you're fast enough and you have the trade items ready (raw food > 50% condition and water are the easiest)
1:08:42 hmmmmm... that's something I need to look into. I've never done the old "let's boil water for absolutely no reason and let it just boil away" technique... gotta be something in it, he did it twice.
I like to watch your videos before bed as a way to ease into sleep. Looks like the anxiety I got from watching you casually balance at 1% health will keep me up all night, thanks.. haha
To be honest, I am quite surprised at how unprepared you were in this episode! One mistake (the wolf attack) is not enough to kill you, but once the mistake is followed by another one (the blizzard stroll), that is actually risking the whole run you got going. Not to mention the other mistakes! Nonetheless, you have made it through, well played, but I was nervous just watching you balancing on the edge of death for a long time.
Thank you - I didnt feel I made any mistakes this video, except forgetting about the infection. They were rather questionable decisions :) hubris, I suppose.
@@Zaknafein you have to admit continuing on to camp office after the wolf struggle is very greedy instead of just turning back to trappers and healing up

I actually sat down to start seriously customizing Camp Office as a base last night and so far have used 26 cedar and 62 fir, (including the wood for the furniture workbench and the meat curing box) and I still have a few pieces of furniture I want. I'm in Pilgrim so cutting wood is easy but extensive redecorating will be a challenge in Interloper to be sure! It's funny that before I thought nothing of leaving piles of stuff around, but now that I've got the place fixed up a bit I feel like the piles of intestines on the floor really kills the vibe...
Politely waiting for the new episode *refreshing zak’s channel few times a day*. Man i could watch an episode every day between my gaming session in this game haha.
Really got into this game because of You and your videos and I’ve learned a lot from them. When a new video pops up, im just really happy i got another hour+ material to Watch and relax myself haha. Take care!!!
I’m pretty sure that when you heal scurvy then your vitamin C meter resets at maximum vitamin C. Basically Vitamin C is a 500 point system. When you get to 100 Vitamin C left then Scurvy Risk starts and you get Scurvy if you hit 0 Vitamin C. When you heal the scurvy affliction then the system resets at a full 500 points of vitamin C.
Wasnt an option here, but I like to save my vegetarian airplane meals and MRE's for curing scurvy. Few of those bad boys and you can cure it in a few days.
Zak, you have said in many videos that you are cutting it too close in hindsight. This run has been filled with so many close calls and its not even close to 500 days. Please be more carefull.
I'm 27 minutes in, and even if you lived in Canada close to me, I would not go anywhere for an outdoor adventure with you. I value life way too much. 😂
Almost lost my run do to looking at the view in PV from the signal tower. It was beautiful clear day I could see the farm house in the distance and got too close to the edge. Got to a point where I couldn't get back up, fell twice and had to limp my way to said farm house. Then there's Zak getting to one percent and just says "I'll be fine".
My furniture workbench completely vanished from inside Camp Office in my main run. Ironically, while i was out getting wood to make other things. You'll have to work so hard for the wood on interloper, so I really hope yours is more permanent!!
Oh good. I thought I was the only one. Though I had a couple of mods installed. So I'm not sure the vanishing act was because of the mods. Did you have any mods installed?
@@systemsofthinking Oh ok. Then I guess it must be a bug with the game. I had left a couple things on the workbench and when I entered the location, it was funny to see the items floating with the workbench missing. :) Had to build it again.
I agree about the optimization point. Yes, I want to be efficient but I’m not going to worry about every single thing until the game is no longer fun to play.
Great, thanks Zak, I’m finally to episode 70, started watching your run on the 25th of December. Also I think I left the same comment on an older video because I don’t get a notification when you reply for some reason, so sorry about that.
Talk about cutting it close... Let's see now. Maybe 2 or 3 more lives of 9 left. I admire your confidence in playing this game and appreciate you pushing it to the very edge. Makes it so much more fun to watch while on the edge of our seats. I would say your main mistake was taking too long to pick weapon to fight off wolf attack which caused severe damaged to health. Yes, it was a surprise attack which is not too common in the game. The other mistakes were just adding to the drama. Overall it was an excellent video. Just try not to get killed playing like this.
I have different method how to fish in TLD. I set my timer to 2 hours and cancel the fishing after first fish is caught. I believe it will maximize the odds of catching fish.
If you're gonna to trader stuff, then you should know a few things beforehand; Stock up on batteries, both kinds of firewood, Ptarmigan down, and a lot of oil. (DO NOT USE JERRY CANS YOU WONT GET THEM BACK) Batteries have been added to various locations to use for trade. I found a bunch in Hibernia and Blackrock.
Started watching this series a few days ago, the first videos etc because I was getting back into the long dark and I assumed this series had been finished quite awhile ago. Zak however had other plans
I can say this, you won't have to worry about scurvy once you head to Costal to do trades, You need lamp oil for a lot of his trades so I greatly underestimated how much fish I need to make .79 gals of oil I fish for 20 plus hours nearly filled up the Travois like 128 pounds and it wasn't enough, so I fished for like 3 to 4 days straight, only sleeping when I started to lose health filled the Travois to almost max weight two more times and I ended up with more oil than I needed, like I have enough to do one or two more trades, but I cooked like nearly 500 pounds of fish give or take and because the coast is mildly bug right now with beach combing like you click one fish and there's three more type of bug so I got extra fish lol, level my cooking from 1 to 4 and fishing is now at three but I play on Pilgrim so I didn't have to worry to much about being cold, so for you I would say stalk up on wood and coal and keep the fire hot I made four campfires around my base to cook all the fish which took a day its self lol
That’s a thing I found a little bit unbalanced at the moment. It becomes likely a fishing simulator at the moment. My last run i spend the first 100 days more or less completely in CH and DP for trading and Scurvey reasons… fish are to heavy to carry around. Some regions are impossible to fish (AC, BRR, Milton, HRV) so I completely avoided them…
@@AmplifyChrisChecking to make sure you know that you can actually fish in all those places you said were impossible. You can make your own fishing hole anywhere the water is deep enough, you just won't have the luxury of a building surrounding you. Monolith lake in HRV, the pond below the hunting lodge in BRR, Milton basin in MT, and the river outside Angler's Den in AC are fishable. Harder maybe, but not impossible.
1:13:55 actually I wonder, if you had slept 10 hours instead of 8, would the two extra hours have given you 1% condition each, or 5% condition each as is they were regular 9th and 10th hour of healthy sleep? And the -5kg carry penalty you noticed at the beginning is from scurvy. Scurvy, the gift that keeps on giving!
I hope your backing up your saves often. There is a bug in the game that can reset EVERYTHING (the scene, skills, inventory, ect). Vanilla doesnt see it very often though.
Note about the lamp oil for the trader. He will accept the little canisters or the Jerry cans. I've given him both, and it works. You just loose the Jerry can.
Instead of fishing, how come you didn’t make any food? For example; the dockworkers pie, porridge, Thompson family stew and lilys pancakes all have a moderate or major amount of vitamin c. Even pies like the peach pie and rose hip pie have a decent amount of vitamin c
I love you Zak… but the cocking around when near death isn’t impressive. It’s just hard to watch. Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer… kinda exciting though 😂 x Happy New Year to you and yours x

Some very close calls! I don't think I would have made it out of those situations, certainly not as calmly. Well done as always 😁
I'm 27 minutes in, and even if you lived in Canada close to me, I would not go anywhere for an outdoor adventure with you. I value life way too much. 😂
Such calm in the face of utter catastrophe 😂
Thanks!
I wish I could have a person like zak who tells me it’s going to be fine in the most unlikely scenarios
7:39 "because on interloper is often cold" the understatement of the year.
@CakeorDeath420 Can't say for sure if mods impacted yours vanishing or not, but seems unlikely. I play totally vanilla. No mods.
@@systemsofthinking Oh ok. Then I guess it must be a bug with the game. I had left a couple things on the workbench and when I entered the location, it was funny to see the items floating with the workbench missing. :) Had to build it again.
This episode is a reminder why I always carry 5-10 prepared birch bark. It weighs practically nothing, and it'll save your life.
I agree about the optimization point. Yes, I want to be efficient but I’m not going to worry about every single thing until the game is no longer fun to play.
Exactly :)
Play it like you are living it and want some quality of life.
1:20:45 I remember when healing while awake was added to the game.
the resilience and trouble shooting from zak is insane haha i would've for sure alt+f4 trying to save that save.
Your vids are perfect when im downloading 2000 Skyrim mods. XD
The Dam is not juste a dam, it's also a scarp metal mine.
But instead of a pickaxe you just need a hacksaw, a bedroll, water and food. 😄
Once one gets scurvy one has to fully refill the vitamin c "buffer" before it is cured.
Hay Zak, do you think you could play the winter mute on your channel when episode 5 comes out.
Yes this is in the works, just taking a while
Great, thanks Zak, I’m finally to episode 70, started watching your run on the 25th of December. Also I think I left the same comment on an older video because I don’t get a notification when you reply for some reason, so sorry about that.
I lost a 348 day stalker run. I watch these videos to give me hope to start a new run 😂😅
Thank you so much for the comment and the super!
1:02:20 "the problem with games is that players optimize the fun out of them"
As crazy as this was to watch it was very entertaining haha
I have different method how to fish in TLD. I set my timer to 2 hours and cancel the fishing after first fish is caught. I believe it will maximize the odds of catching fish.
Shit Zak, almost got toasted there at the start bud. 😁
Dla zasięgów 💪💪
This is probably the best episode so far. 🙇♀️
If you're gonna to trader stuff, then you should know a few things beforehand;
Stock up on batteries, both kinds of firewood, Ptarmigan down, and a lot of oil. (DO NOT USE JERRY CANS YOU WONT GET THEM BACK)
Batteries have been added to various locations to use for trade. I found a bunch in Hibernia and Blackrock.
1:04:08 trader doesn't care if it's lamp oil or jerry can
Started watching this series a few days ago, the first videos etc because I was getting back into the long dark and I assumed this series had been finished quite awhile ago.
Zak however had other plans
Lol nah you might be right. Seems like zak is SPEEDRUNNING death in this game
Nothing to say, still impressed of your coolness. ;-) At 25% Health i am in a panic-mode.
I feel you, at day 250 and after surviving with flying colors in the Far Teritory I got attacked entering Mistery Lake… 😅
I can say this, you won't have to worry about scurvy once you head to Costal to do trades,
You need lamp oil for a lot of his trades so I greatly underestimated how much fish I need to make .79 gals of oil
I fish for 20 plus hours nearly filled up the Travois like 128 pounds and it wasn't enough, so I fished for like 3 to 4 days straight, only sleeping when I started to lose health filled the Travois to almost max weight two more times and I ended up with more oil than I needed, like I have enough to do one or two more trades, but I cooked like nearly 500 pounds of fish give or take and because the coast is mildly bug right now with beach combing like you click one fish and there's three more type of bug so I got extra fish lol, level my cooking from 1 to 4 and fishing is now at three
but I play on Pilgrim so I didn't have to worry to much about being cold, so for you I would say stalk up on wood and coal and keep the fire hot
I made four campfires around my base to cook all the fish which took a day its self lol
Me seeing the title: that sounds like a chill episode
Me watching the episode: 😨🫣
This one sure had a lot of tension!
This was harrowing to watch, holy moly.
The lost carry weight you were mentioning early on in the episode is I'm pretty sure one of the effects of scurvy, not the parasites
Thanks for videos
Omg. Hell of a ride.
I hope your backing up your saves often. There is a bug in the game that can reset EVERYTHING (the scene, skills, inventory, ect). Vanilla doesnt see it very often though.
What a thrilling episode!
28:44 yep, cheat death has dramatically changed the game.
I've never heard that creepy music playing at 25:00. Is it because you're creeping at death's door?
wow, that was so close 🙈 ver nice video - as always 🙂 I hope they are not removing the lights, they never worked on xbox yet 😐
Wow what an ep that infection was a bit careless but makes for entertainment i thought it was going to be over when you went to bed
I also have 2 of that same flask.
Note about the lamp oil for the trader. He will accept the little canisters or the Jerry cans. I've given him both, and it works. You just loose the Jerry can.
loosing a jerry can is not an option 😅🤣
I'm on stalker, so I have like a dozen. @@morlin1237
@@morlin1237Jerry cans are precious! No trader gets my precious green trophies
When I did it you couldn’t trade the Jerry can fuel, is that updated?
Maybe it was low condition? I got the impression the trader does not accept anything below 50%
Could be wrong.
Start piling up lantern fuel and wood near the drop box so it’s right there when you need it for trades
Wow you had like 1 hp there. How were you this calm I'd immediately use the stim :)
Edit: Ok he DID use the stim.
Instead of fishing, how come you didn’t make any food? For example; the dockworkers pie, porridge, Thompson family stew and lilys pancakes all have a moderate or major amount of vitamin c. Even pies like the peach pie and rose hip pie have a decent amount of vitamin c
Zak on 1% health..
Casually normal on zak 😂😂
While me on panic mode 😂😂😂😂
Veteran guys veteran hahahah
I love you Zak… but the cocking around when near death isn’t impressive. It’s just hard to watch. Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer… kinda exciting though 😂 x Happy New Year to you and yours x
the vanishing safe.....
An excellent mystery for Nancy Drew
One of my best runs was ended because I forgot about an infection and died in my sleep.
I was holding my breath! Those blurry, prism looking edges and staggering. Yikes!
Don't forget to mark your base as another "near death"
Heh thinking you should be wearing the ballistic vest more
I havent watched the whole video yet to see what you are about to do but....how about leaving Trappers in a somewhatt virgin state and leaving your non IL gear there and other unique items like a museum?😊
Not a bad idea :)
