Although born and bred around Belfast docks, my late dad used to sing this song all the time, specially when he'd downed a few brandy's and soda water...

The Divis flats are a replica of the Crescents in Hulme Manchester!!!!! Same bastard architect I suspect!! He actually got awards for them! They lasted 24 years in Manchester and they stopped putting families in after 6 years and people would squat there and not even get asked for rent!! Morrrissey , Ian Brown and Steve Coogan are some famous squatters.. Cheers to my Irish cousins!!!!

Mickey Marley and his roundabout I would have seen in the streets around where I lived some 60 years ago. I even plucked grass from the gardens to feed his horse.

It is good seeing the old photos, and stirring up the memory, but as has been said, it is a Derry song; and the lyrics put that beyond dispute...And it is only half the Song. Nice to watch despite all that, and no mistake...It is a pity that all the cities and towns look similar, and are losing their identity. Same shops, same chains of money spinners with the same sad look about them. It is like a disease spreading, and it is not just in Ireland.

Ah, those were the days. Apart from the Troubles that is! Reminds me of how much charm aul Belast used to have, even during the darkness. I'd forgotten about Micky Marley's Roundabout on High St. What a character he was! Now Belfast is just like any other town- bland, corporate and soulless. Damn shame.

That was great. It's the first time I've actually seen the Park Picture House and Mooney's, places my father has told me about many times, and are the settings for many stories in his memoirs. (He was born in Belfast in 1935.)
Do you happen to know if and where I can find photos of those places, and who I might contact for permission to reprint them? I'd appreciate any help you can give. Thanks again for this. I'll show it to my "da" and I'm sure he'll love it. :)

The Town I Loved So Well is about Derry

  • @LondonBrit

This song is called 'The town I loved so well' and is about Londonderry, not Belfast ;) What a lovely song though, even though the band singing it are Republican leaning I still enjoy listening to it as a Unionist.
