- A behind the scenes look at how Sky Silvestry's lines were filmed in Midnight. Taken from the Confidential episode Look Who's Talking, covering Midnight in series 4.
The entity isn't the real monster of the story; humans are. That's why we never find out what, exactly, it is.
The entity learnt everything it knew from the people it met which begs the question was it infact the humans decision to throw sky and the doctor out that taught the creature that it should kill. Like you say the humans were the real monsters in this story not the entity.
wow yeah you're right...
It plays on the fear factor of humans for sure
@@davidvasey5065 yeah, all it does is imprint...
@@davidvasey5065 the entity was already malicious otherwise why would it have gone for Sky because she was the most scared? It feeds on Fear
I was always wondering how much work they put into this episode. But it was totally worth it - one of the best episodes of the modern Doctor.
this episode was creepier then blink in my opinion
Easily. I'd say Blink was the best, but this was by far the scariest.
+BlazedHearts actually it was a 2 year old one
LateNightGaming - VideoGame News & Entertainment No fucking way. You? You watch doctor who? I've been subscribed to your channel for almost a year!
than*
LateNightGaming - Video Game News & Entertainment I agree
I hope Lesley Sharp won an award for this episode because she has some of the hardest lines I've ever seen an actor need to know. Freaking pi to thirty digits and in sync with David. Plus did such an awesome job as a foreign entity that is wickedly scary.
I learned the first 30 digits of the square root of pi because of this episode. First 9 were already learned because of Rick and Morty, so it was a little bit easier.
Jay Pierce ah,a fellow genius!
Not even synchronized- syncopated!
@@Blue-gp3vn you know, you have to have a high IQ to understand rick and morty
Not even just going in sync with David, but with the Doctor
This is the most underrated DW episode. Blink isn't the finest DW episode, Midnight is. And Russell managed to scare the crap out of me without even SHOWING me a monster.
*Resurrection Of The Daleks would like a word with you*
@@caleb7551 I meant new Who. Sorry I should have been clear.
@@geniusfollower ah you're good
Fear of the Unknown
Luckily Russel is now going to be the script writer. So... there’ll be episodes that will scare the crap out of you.
For me one of the best episodes ever! Brilliant plot - a perfect study of human nature under stress. And acted out just great. All this talking in sync. Hard but excellent work for actors AND editors! They should have get an award for that episode!
I agree! It was beautifully written and all involved put in a lot of hard work to produce it. It's dedinitely one of my favorites!
This is easily my favourite episode of all of Doctor Who. It was the scariest episode in my opinion, not just because we didn't know what the monster/alien was, but because it really showed how humankind reacts to danger. Our strongest instinct is survival and if we feel that it might be threatened, we would start killing anything that could represent any potential danger. In this case, it was the alien inside Sky and then it was the Doctor. Also, it was truly terrifying to see the Doctor in that situation. He was completely alone with no companion or any ally. He lost control of his own speech and body and became completely helpless as that creature violated his mind, and then was dragged and almost thrown out to his inevitable death by the very people he'd saved and risked his life hundreds of times for. So I applaud everyone who's worked on it for delivering such a strong and terrifying story.
I totally agree!! He was so alone and helpless and he's THE DOCTOR!
What I like is that in the end, the Doctor could not save the day; he had to rely on the fact that what he had said earlier resonated with two of the passengers, while the others manipulated what he had said to feed their panic.
@@sonnyocad287 yes!
Very twilight zone esc doctor who episode
They probably had to shoot "Bananas" and "Oh, Doctor, you're so handsome-yes I am, thank you" a ton of times cuz I bet they kept laughing at those.
This was a vile episode, and one of the best of any series of Dr Who. Most Dr Who shows the best of humanity, even when you have bad guys, but this one was too close to reality, fat too believable, and for that it was perfect science fiction. Absolutely loved it. Thanks for the upload
So much creeper than Blink, but that could just because I already knew all about the Weeping Angels beforehand. This must've been such a production nightmare. As someone who's had to do similar types of editing, I can testify to how long this must've taken in post.
LeonardMeltsner Bug it was definitely worth if :D
Out of curiosity, how did you know about the Weeping Angels beforehand ?
One of my top 5 episodes of the modern Doctor Who.
Wow, David's real accent is really strong.
+The Trolldier Love the tone of voice, "Russell very *kindly* gave us the square root of pi to memorize to thirty decimal places...."
Hes from scotland like me yesss
The Trolldier it's far from the strongest of Scottish accents
You must have not heard many Scottish accents.
His real surname is not Tennant.
One of the most depressing but well written, thoughtful DW scripts. Much as I like aliens and new planets, these contained scenes of human interactions are so thought provoking of the RTD era.
Also *David Troughton!* David Tennant at least got to work with the Second Doctor's son.
Literally the best ever doctor who episode of all time. So clever also I love the touch of how Dee Dee is actually more intelligent than the professor
You can see Patrick in David Troughton's Face. Those heavy eye-lids and the upper lip-section under his nose
Very much so.
Would be interesting to have him play the second Doctor in some "wibbly wobbly timey-wimey" episode.
In the next episode the First Doctor is going to appear again (Played by David Bradley) in the time just before he regenerates, so we might see a recast Second Doctor too!
Midnight isn't just an ordinary Doctor Who episode. It's a fully fledged suspense/psychological horror film with a well thought out entity and a central theme exploring the human nature.
Watching this episode I was in awe of how complicated it must have been to film, but I had no idea just how hard!
Wow, just goes to show that the credit for a great show really should be thrown everywhere. "The crew" doesn't really cut it does it?
+Rob Innes Crew is always undervalued; the sound editor is no exception.
I have such a respect for sound recordists/mixers. Y’all have the hardest job on set.
I was in the middle of watching this episode for like the 5th time when I decided to search for this video because I just had to know how they pulled this off. Such talented actors and crew. This is insane!
Jesus Christ! O.o What a huge load of work for everyone... It's the first DW episode I ever saw and it remains one of my favourite ones to this day. And it's got no monsters, no fancy special effects, not even much of a gigantic spacey planet, no alien race (other than the Doctor) - and yet it's gnuinely awe-some. The incredible suspense created by the actors and the script - no wonder I got hooked after this.
Incredibly fascinating stuff. This makes me appreciate how seamless and brilliant the episode was even more. Thanks for sharing!
This is one of my Top 10 favorite episodes of all time.
I always wondered how they managed that! Plus the scene where they're talking right at each other simultaneously and moving in sync makes me hold my breath all the time. Gotta wonder how many takes it took because somebody stuttered or giggled. XD
Damn, for a bottle episode that’s a lot of work! But definitely worth it- Midnight captures the fear of the unknown perfectly, using the uncanny valley to devastating effect. One of the scariest episodes of New Who, if not *the* scariest.
One of my favorite episodes EVER! It's so creepy, especially because of the music! I especially love it because of how it focused on how humans behave in such a situation. It may be science fiction, but the way everyone reacts to these situations and how they planned on dealing with them while the Doctor tries to keep everyone calm is so realistic and all done in a single location, and at no point does it ever get boring.
this was one of the best episodes of tennant's era. this and the waters of mars
I have to say that this episode's script and performances were immaculate. I don't think I've ever seen a Doctor Who story with such a strong core cast of characters. The fact that in a 45-minute episode, you can look at any character and get a real sense of who they are is amazing. They are all so unique in how they react to the situation and the way they interact and feed off one another's energy feels incredibly raw and authentic.
Love this episode. One of my favorites.
Like 12 Angry Men if a monster attacked. I'd be pissed too if someone turned my uninhabited planet into Las Vegas.
Also, I love it when guest stars come on and nail it.
Fun fact: the professor is the son of Patrick Troughton, and his son played Dean Thomas in the Harry Potter films.
ThatCringeCalledIggleboz no that’s Ian Russell’s son
ThatCringeCalledIggleboz: Yeah, Dean Thomas was Ian Chesterton's grandson. However, Dudley was played by the Second Doctor's grandson. I love how much crossover there is between those two franchises, hah.
This is my favourite episode of DW because of this amazing production and simplicity.
This shows how incredible Lesley Sharp is!
3:47 - PATRICK'S SON!
David Troughton looks so much like his dad :)
Sounds like him too! Just give him the black wig.
this is one of my favorite Tennant's Doctor Who episodes besides Blink, because it shows how, despite having control over the whole of space and time, with all of his cleverness and skills and gadgets, there are still things that The Doctor is powerless against; and it's amazing to watch what that feeling is doing to him psychologically. This episode is simple yet brilliant, and the Doctor will never be the same again after this.
It was worth the work... Great episode. Absolutely brilliant.
My brother and I have been debating theories on this for hours!
My favourite episode ever
This episode should get way more praise than it does IMO. It may just be my favorite in the entire series, at least as far as the revival. Seeing how they did this is fascinating.
binge rewatching doctor who right now, i thought it was so cool that the actress playing sky could repeat everyone’s lines like that. i needed to see the behind the scenes😂
This is, in my opinion, the best episode in terms of creativity, writing and performance. There were characters that irritated you to the core, characters that creeped the living crap out of you and all the while you’re convincing yourself that this is in fact a show, because the performance of the two is just outstanding. Flipping pioneers and perfectionists.
This episode was really intense, especially toward the end. Kind of creeped me out :P
i loved colin morgan's scenes!
This is one of my favorite episodes!! It is so INTENSE!!!! Amazing work Doctor Who Crew!!! :D
Really great and underrated episode
I like how Colin Morgan was in this episode.
40 pages in 1 scene!!
I always felt like Lovecraft had hijacked this episode. It was grand.
I feel like the other thing with memorizing pi and doing it in sync that might be overlooked is there's no room to draw a breath, you can't breathe
This is incredible.
as a kid i never really appreciated this episode i wanted more episodes like age of steel and blink but now im older i love this episode its so good
This is literally my favorite episode!!
I think RTD's idea was to show that Alien's can be dangerous to us but humans are much more of a danger to ourselves under pressure.
definitely one of my all time favorite doctor who episodes :)
My favorite episode after Blink.
Until this moment that I was watching this I had no idea that Patrick Troughton’s son, David Troughton, played the professor!
Oh I loved "Midnight" it was fantastic.
This and Blink are my favorite episodes in the whole series
yes it was a filler (an amazing/scary one) and didnt add to the shows entirety but it did give you the little bit about the lost moon of poosh and rose in the bg for a second
One of the creepiest episodes of Doctor who I've ever seen in my life but amazing all the same
I love when they spoke out the long numbers of Pi. That’s got it be one of the most difficult dialogues.
I'm not gonna lie, after watching this episode, it's pretty relieving to watch the actors laugh and break character saying their lines
FASCINATING!!
from only hearing dee dee at the very start she was teh cleverist person in the room jethrow was the most cautious and aware
this is so bloody impressive
Watching this makes me amazed this ever got greenlit in the first place
40 pages of dialogue to remember? That’s a lot A LOT
This woman's face is now terrifying
The entity learnt everything it knew from the people it met which begs the question was it infact the humans decision to throw Sky and the Doctor out that taught the creature that it should kill. The humans were the real monsters in this story not the entity.
Nivada Star thats the point.
Exactly.
"Russell rather kindly gave us the square root of Pi to learn to 30 decimal places"
Biff Cane = A salute to Back to the Future 2. Old Biff's Cane.
A nightmare for editing for sure but worth the effort, they created a classic, easily a stand out episode and they didnt even need to use special effects or monsters, just actors doing thier job.
I would so love to do audio editing like this!
I can't be the only person watching this so the episode becomes less scary
Wow that must’ve been challenging midnight is fantastic though definitely worth it
Am I the only one who is really happy that the second doctors son is playing a character? Yes... okay... I'll go now...
Matilda Raison: His other son was the professor in Last Christmas, as well. Interesting how they had both of them play professors.
He appeared in the enemy of the world and the war games
That's absolutely INCREDIBLE.
the only enemy that scared me
Humans scare me too.
This episode genuinely scared me and still kind of does. Easily one of the creepier episodes of Ten.
Sky did a perfect job at being scary as heck. Crouched there with the look of evil
The scary thing is that these videos decide to jump into my recommended the day after I rewatch them o_O
I never realized that the Professor was played by Patrick Troughton's son
David is a brilliant actor he even said that in one of the series I think it was the flight to utopia.
the best part of the episode was goth merlin and you cant change my mind
Her hard work was well worth it, midnight is the best doctor who epioode .
Hey look, Patrick Troughton's son is in this episode!
Molto bene!
That prof. Hobbes looks quite a lot like King Peladon 😂
Shimble shamble bobble dooble
Ha, hadn't realized at the time the Second Doctor's son was in this episode.. faboo!..
David Troughton is Patrick Troughton's (Second Doctor) Son
This is the darkest doctor who story. Children of Earth (Torchwood) is the darkest thing in the doctor who universe...you know who the villains are in both of them....us...
well, Midnight wasn't us. It was an alien lifeform controlling humans to be hyper-emotional. As soon as it was gone, they returned to normal. You can see its possession of them go away the moment Sky died.
@@Kissfan96dr the whole point of midnight was the humans. What they will do to save themselves. The alien took advantage of the true nature of humanity
Excuse me while I go and scream into a pillow
Why is David's giggle so cute
Really tempted to learn the square root of pi just to freak people out
Such a creepy villain it’s a shame we don’t see stuff like this in modern who
Fun fact: David Troughton (here playing professor Hobbes) is the son of Patrick Troughton who played the 2nd Doctor.
This is amazing!
I did say when i was watching it: it must have been really difficult for her to do
Specifically, the pi bit for both of them 😭
