I've lived here for a few months now for study abroad, and I still get fooled sometimes. Especially by things that don't physically expire all that much (ie: potato chips) yet there will be models for them. Or if it's a bakery, since it's hard to tell if they have multiple desserts in the display case since that's where they're pulling them out from, or if they're just samples made to look like that ^^"

Some items are sprayed with shellac or some other clear coat, semi-preserves the food. Soft foods will still go bad fairly quickly. I saw it done on some bread before to make it look fresh baked for over a year.

there is a Japanese chain called Masu they have good ramen imo.. I think it is as close as you will get it here in the U.S. Of course you can't beat getting ramen from the source its self (that being Japan) Buutt.. i think it is very good.. I am not sure if they only have Masu's in Minnesota.. but if you ever go to the mall of America.. there is a chain in that mall.. and I have been to both locations in Minneapolis and imo the one in the mall is the better one.. tho that one closes earlier with the mall.. but they have pachiko! :D.. also there is a market called Mitsuwa there around Chicago somewhere.. that does have a food court inside :). I haven't really eaten anything from there.. I have only purchased regular unprepared food from there..

Once I went to an ice cream shop and to choose the toppings there were cones on display, I thought it were samples so I touched it, it turned out it was a real cone with nutella and sprinkles. I tried to fix the hole my finger did on the chocolate but it didn't work, so I just spun the cone to hide it hoping no one checks the camera. From an outsider's perspective they probably do have a bunch of places like this.
From the looks of it, a lot of restaurants have this in high demand. On top of that, they're entirely handmade instead of manufactured. Also, since normal customers can have a do-it-yourself session with the pros, I'd imagine it's an art that's easy to start (though, to perfect it I'd imagine that it'd take as much effort as it takes to perfect any art).
From this evidence, I conclude that there are indeed at least a sizable amount of places in Japan that do this. If I end up there someday I may try to do this.

Thats so cool! In my home town in California we have something kind of like that in a small restaurant that displays fake ice cream art.

I gave Gujo so much business when I taught my students about the samples being a famous thing from Gifu Prefecture. Many of them actually went there and made lots of things (full size parfaits, keychains, cakes, etc). I was happy they learned and were excited enough to make their parents take them. lol

You guys looked like you had so much fun. I'm an artist, so this is really intriguing. Your pastries were really cute. I loved Jun's little samples, as well. It looked extremely realistic. 凄い (Hope I didn't mess up on that usage, still new to Japanese.)

I noticed in the craft stores here in America they are finally getting "DecoDen" supplies! Mod Podge (I think that's their name) has some "whipped cream" to use as decoration. I haven't found any food molds or anything in basic craft stores, but they do have animal, people, places, etc. molds. I'll definitely check out some of these places! I'd love to learn how to make fake food! :3 Thanks for another video!

On a side note: fake food is one of my favorite things. Ever since I was little I've had this weird fascination for fake food. Once Michael's had an aisle for it and it was my favorite thing. I wanted all of it!

Ohh I've watched that "is this food" show once or twice, I didnt know it was a new years thing! I know this is not the point of the video haha but does it air just around the new year or ON the new year? Just wondering because I love watching Downtown's new year 24 hour batsu game haha :p
More on point though I absolutely love these fake food, they look sooo realistic it's crazy! I think the most impressive was the lettuce, to me :o I was wondering what that was going to be and then BAM lettuce!! Thanks for the video, it was really interesting!
