I met Walter Payton in 1986 at his restaurant/bar called The Acapulco Bar in Elk Grove Village. When he shook my hand he squeezed it so hard it hurt for a week. What great memories.
I met him in 92. He sined my WP card not once but twice. He first signed it with a dried out marker which you can bately still make out. I asked him if he could sign it again with another pen. He said because I'm a Bears fan he would. Its pretty cool having a Payton card with two signatures on it, both by sweetness himself.

Thank you so much, when my dad was alive I would watch the game with him. It was always a wonderful time. I sure do miss my dad. Once I became a mom I had two boys and sat them with me to watch the game.
I agree. Today's teams would get flattened, kicked, beaten, bloodied, scarred, and burnt to a crisp playing any of the teams from the 80s and early 90s.

Payton was about the biggest joe cool who ever played the game. Nothing ever got to him and such a play was just another day at the office. He was one of a kind & no one will ever be like him ever again.
It wasn’t a cheap shot. If you watch the play close Payton garbed lees jersey and pulled him along with him. Watch it is slow motion. Plus Payton threw a punch and lee remained calm.

Yeah, they're still smoking. Nowadays you've got to pick your spots and then make sure you've got good spots. Even in these "absolutely no smoking" buildings where some anti-smoking nazis even install sensitive smoke detectors in known spots you can always find a multitude of safe places, sometimes with 10,20 people puffin' up a cloud! ☁️ The camadrie is great! The worst thing is feeling like a kid, hiding alone somewhere. BTW, I run marathons with my pack a day habit. I'm not proud of it but I'm almost 56 and been a real smoker since midway through high school. I can run up the stairs better then many in their 30's. You've got to keep in tip top shape with this bad habit not that it's an iron clad guarantee. Most folks that succumb to "smoking related" deaths have plenty of other bad habits that attributed. Now where's my lighter!
I watched every season since 85. Yes, there is much to appreciate. But, the game is more exciting now. The nfl knew more scoring would raise the entertainment value. Sure, QBs and receivers have it so easy now. But, I remember games back in the day with the final score 13-7, 10-3, etc... I’d rather have more points.
Love the way the game was played back then. It wasn’t just a numbers game with high percentage throws to entertain people with scoring. I saw that Cleveland vs Minnesota game yesterday (10-3-2021) and it was so 80s. Reminded me of this era. I loved it but a lot of people complained. How can you not like these games?!
You know what makes me sick about the NFL now. Is it's more of a pussy sport. The NFL is taking out the defense slowly but surely. You put all these rules that you can't tackle this way, but do they come up with any kind of tackle to put it in the tackle's place? No, they don't. I would rather watch college football then the NFL. You can have both high scoring games and defenses that can play. The players know what they signed up for since highschool. Honestly why pay millions of dollars to the players if you're not going to let them play football? It makes no sense to me. In my own opinion the younger generation thinks it's all about them but let me tell you something it's not. I'm so sick of this world thinking it's about the younger generation not only when it comes to the NFL but TV in general. And what I mean about that is this. There is to many reality TV programs on the air. Who cares about the elderly and what they want to watch. Nobody because it's all about the money and the younger generation. Then you got the NFL saying it's about players safety. Then why do they want to go international? When there's mostly soccer fields and underneath the turf is cement? I am more interested and excited to watch a low scoring game because it's about the offense and the defense. Now Roger Gooddell is talking about banning the Eagles tush push because he thinks it's boring. Well in my own opinion you might as well ban the quarterback sneak because they are basically the same thing. The only difference is that the Eagles are better at it than most teams. Why take out the punt returners and the running backs? Your killing this sport. And you want to know something else. Why do we have all these hefty fines on players? Because they have changed the rules so much that the defense is afraid to tackle anyone because of the fines. They didn't have to many fines in the 80's and 90's. And the fines are unfair because not everyone makes the same amount of money. So now you tell me how is today's football games more exciting.
Even as a Packer fan I agree. Under Forrest Gregg, who was an all time great player, the Packers really stunk and were undisciplined. That play by Lee driving Payton over the bench well out of bounds absolutely deserved ejection.

Even though the final score is low, the quality of football was great, incredible emotion from both teams, and just a hard nosed football game, great defense from both teams, Players from both teams must have needed ice packs after this one.
Used to run that pass play where it looked like the ball was hovering to him...I'd run McMahon to the top of the screen and then just throw it back to see it float across lol.

I was born in 1975 didn’t really start watching football until 1989 at age 14 when lions drafted Barry Sanders and I’ve been a huge football fan ever since then. With that said, it’s a real treat watching Payton run he has his own style that reminds me of nobody else.
I'm old enough to remember him well. His style has never been duplicated. This was a rare season where he played on a great team. Most of his career yards came in games that were ultimately meaningless. The NFC Central was a bad division.

Most of the time they would cut it out. and that was the life of a childhood Bears fan. Vince just could not be consistent as I remember. However he did have some really good games.
What gets lost in this is that GB actually had a pretty talented team, especially on defense. George Cumby, Randy Scott, Brian Noble Alfonso Carreker, Ezra Johnson, were a formidable d-line. And the offense wasn’t too bad with if they had a consistent QB and running game. Lynn Dickey was done with injuries(he retired after this season), Jim Zorn was not what he used to be, and rookie Randy Wright was too small. Just couldn’t put the right pieces in place. They had good receivers, Lofton, Epps, Coffman and West.
Canseeit in the score and stats that GB had a decent team. I would say the defense was decent with some individual players in front 7 who were very good. On offense their QB situation was same as the Bears backup QB situation-poor. Not much at RB, either.
@Chazz man well, during the 1984-1987, the Packers were one of the most penalized team in the league, the Charles Martin Body-slam, the The Blindside game of Stills and Mark Lee, but it was with Bears, so it wasn’t surprising. Forrest Gregg was not a coach in control of his team. When Lindy Infante came along, they began to wane off on the penalties, albeit his short stint.

Greatest time in my life was this year (1985) as far as being a kid. Dan Hampton had 2 sacks in this game. Hamp was my idol as a kid! Packers were dirty & so were the Bears, but "Da Monsters" got away with it! When you have 8 outta 11 guys that played in the Pro-Bowl on defense & 5 more on offense, the refs tend to instead watch the other guys....ESPECIALLY ones on losing teams. These Bears went 62-17 from 1984-'88, & 52-11 from '85-'88!
In my opinion, the Bears should have won more super bowls. I think Jim McMahon should have stayed more healthy. He was injured in 1984, and 1986, They should have won those. Bears destroyed other QBs so Jim should have been more cautious. Look at Packers in 1986, Martin slammed Jim Mac to the ground taking him out for the rest of the season. That dirty play cost the Bears the super bowl in my opinion.

Two years in a row packers with a complete cheap shot on a major player for the bears this was far less aggressive than the cheap shot on McMahon in 86 though that was insanely ridiculous. Cost the bears another super bowl

Boy, the Packers played dirty. 1st quarter. Payton pushed out of bounds over the bench. McMahon elbowed and punched after the play. And 22:03 the most blatant late hit I've ever seen.
I was at a bear packer game at Wrigley Field in ‘65. The packers were coming off the field after winning the game. They exited at the first base dugout which was covered in plywood. There were little street urchin kids there asking for chin straps and one kid grabbed Forest Greeggs chin strap. Gregg swung his helmet which was in his hand at the kid. The kid was fast enough to move but the helmet slammed into the plywood with a huge boom. I swear if Gregg would of him the kid he would of killed him. Those old guys didn’t play.

Yet he was strangely worshipped. The most overrated coach in history. Walsh and Gibbs quietly had several championships whereas Ditka had one loudly.

It's unbelievable that Payton played behind a crummy offensive line for a crummy team for most of his career and still set all those records and finished his career basically injury free.
One has to wonder what kind of numbers he'd have put up if, like Emmett Smith he'd played with a great team his entire career... or even half of it instead of 3-4 years. One game an announcer said that up to '84 Walter never had an All-Pro lineman while Simpson had 2 in the hall of fame.
Packers were desperate for a win coming into the game at 3-5. A loss basically ended their season as far as playoff hopes were concerned. They did come back and win 5 of the last 7 to finish 8-8.
For all of you young guys out there that think today's receivers would outrun 80's and 90's defensive backs, The Back to back Cowboys had six guys with 4.3 40's. Linebackers that ran 4.4's too.
This is football and these teams HATED each other! This is excellent. History remembers the Bears dominating this season but the Packers almost won this game.

I'm surprised that NFL Network decided to air this game, because it really wasn't that significant a game in the Bears 1985 season, but I'm glad they did! I have several copies of this game on DVD and this is the best quality I've seen by far.

They were claiming that William Perry was the heaviest person to score a TD in the NFL. The year before this game Joe Jacoby recovered a fumble against the Vikings in the endzone for a TD. Not sure who was heavier but both were well over 300.

He thought for a moment and said " I don't know if I FEARED anyone but I certainly went out of my way to know where Wilbur Marshall was at all times because if a play was called to his side of the field? You just prayed someone would get to you before he did".... Now THAT'S a legacy!!
Watching this game again, I am tempted to rate it as the “best” regular season game for the Bears in 1985, in terms of a competitive and meaningful game. But for Zorn’s complete inability to hit an open receiver in the 4th quarter, the Bears may have lost-it was really close. Other games from 1985 ranked: 49ers=Revenge; Vikings MNF=Comeback; Cowboys=Annihilation; Tampa (both Games)=Sleep Walking through first halfs (but Wilder and Deberg gutsy performances); GB (MNF)=Fridge Hype starts; Lions (in Detroit)=Most Massive Hit on QB I have ever seen; Miami=Pride (Buddy using Marshall to cover Moore in first half) Before the Fall; Then a bunch of filler snoozer games. Also, scratching my head at the NFL schedule for the Bears in 85. They only had one division game after week 10, and had played GB both times in weeks 7 and 9. Playing almost back-to-back doesn’t provide enough time to adjust and for injuries and recovery to play out, so it’s basically the same game each time. As good as this game was, could have been even better in December, with a huge build-up.
And the Bears would have won a 2nd superbowl if that criminal Charles Martin didn't bodyslam McMahon the following season. Amazing that he was only suspended 2 games. Imagine if someone did that to Tom Brady.

I was at this game. One of the best games I ever attended. Intensity was at an almost all-time high. Loved the hit on Suhey by Kenny Stills. I could hear it all the way up in the 52nd row in the north end zone. Incredible!

It began with Coaches Forrest Gregg and Mike Ditka. Their relationship set the tone. They never once shook hands after a game. It was run off the field and ignore the other guy. I think Ditka had more hatred for Gregg and the Packers than Gregg had for the Ditka and the Bears to begin with. But the way games were played between the two teams back then, it soon grew to all time intensity I haven’t seen since in the NFL. Only thing that remotely resembles that old rivalry from back then in today’s NFL would be Steelers / Browns.

1:25:05 - Look here and you will see a rarity. Gary Fencik got his hands on the ball carrier but did not bring him down. Fencik was one of the best tacklers in history and usually, if he could get to you, if he could get a hand on you, you went down. Give Jesse Clark credit for that.

I was born in 1975 didn’t really start watching football until 1989 at age 14 when lions drafted Barry Sanders and I’ve been a huge football fan ever since then. With that said, it’s a real treat watching Payton run he has his own style that reminds me of nobody else.
I'm old enough to remember him well. His style has never been duplicated. This was a rare season where he played on a great team. Most of his career yards came in games that were ultimately meaningless. The NFC Central was a bad division.

Monday Night football was waiting for the Sunday highlights hoping see Vince Evans who would sometimes be an actual quarterback. Most of the time they would cut it out. and that was the life of a childhood Bears fan. Vince just could not be consistent as I remember. However he did have some really good games.

What gets lost in this is that GB actually had a pretty talented team, especially on defense. George Cumby, Randy Scott, Brian Noble Alfonso Carreker, Ezra Johnson, were a formidable d-line. And the offense wasn’t too bad with if they had a consistent QB and running game. Lynn Dickey was done with injuries(he retired after this season), Jim Zorn was not what he used to be, and rookie Randy Wright was too small. Just couldn’t put the right pieces in place. They had good receivers, Lofton, Epps, Coffman and West.
Canseeit in the score and stats that GB had a decent team. I would say the defense was decent with some individual players in front 7 who were very good. On offense their QB situation was same as the Bears backup QB situation-poor. Not much at RB, either.
@Chazz man well, during the 1984-1987, the Packers were one of the most penalized team in the league, the Charles Martin Body-slam, the The Blindside game of Stills and Mark Lee, but it was with Bears, so it wasn’t surprising. Forrest Gregg was not a coach in control of his team. When Lindy Infante came along, they began to wane off on the penalties, albeit his short stint.
Agree. This was a formidable Packers team. A better QB and this Packers team could have been special.

NFL uniforms pretty much at their zenith in the 1980s. Big shoulder pads and sleeves on the jerseys. Vicious battle between the two clubs here.

Greatest time in my life was this year (1985) as far as being a kid. Dan Hampton had 2 sacks in this game. Hamp was my idol as a kid! Packers were dirty & so were the Bears, but "Da Monsters" got away with it! When you have 8 outta 11 guys that played in the Pro-Bowl on defense & 5 more on offense, the refs tend to instead watch the other guys....ESPECIALLY ones on losing teams. These Bears went 62-17 from 1984-'88, & 52-11 from '85-'88!

stayed more healthy. He was injured in 1984, and 1986, They should have won those.
Bears destroyed other QBs so Jim should have been more cautious.
Look at Packers in 1986, Martin slammed Jim Mac to the ground taking him out for the rest of the season.

Boy, the Packers played dirty. 1st quarter. Payton pushed out of bounds over the bench. McMahon elbowed and punched after the play. And 22:03 the most blatant late hit I've ever seen.

I was at a bear packer game at Wrigley Field in ‘65. The packers were coming off the field after winning the game. They exited at the first base dugout which was covered in plywood. There were little street urchin kids there asking for chin straps and one kid grabbed Forest Greeggs chin strap. Gregg swung his helmet which was in his hand at the kid. The kid was fast enough to move but the helmet slammed into the plywood with a huge boom. I swear if Gregg would of him the kid he would of killed him. Those old guys didn’t play.
Halas and Lambeau never shook hands after a game either. But when Lambeau died, Halas was one of the pallbearers. Go figure.
Jim Zorn and Paul Kaufman more tough as nails so was that 85 Green Bay team give them credit they played the Bears tough

@@joenorris8220to realize that the Bears would have easily won 2 or 3 championships if they had Walsh or Gibbs as coach. Ditka lost to them four times in the playoffs from 84 to 88. Yet he was strangely worshipped. The most overrated coach in history. Walsh and Gibbs quietly had several championships whereas Ditka had one loudly.

It's unbelievable that Payton played behind a crummy offensive line for a crummy team for most of his career and still set all those records and finished his career basically injury free.

One has to wonder what kind of numbers he'd have put up if, like Emmett Smith he'd played with a great team his entire career... or even half of it instead of 3-4 years. One game an announcer said that up to '84 Walter never had an All-Pro lineman while Simpson had 2 in the hall of fame.

Packers were desperate for a win coming into the game at 3-5. A loss basically ended their season as far as playoff hopes were concerned.
They did come back and win 5 of the last 7 to finish 8-8.

For all of you young guys out there that think today's receivers would outrun 80's and 90's defensive backs, The Back to back Cowboys had six guys with 4.3 40's. Linebackers that ran 4.4's too.
This is football and these teams HATED each other! This is excellent. History remembers the Bears dominating this season but the Packers almost won this game.

I'm surprised that NFL Network decided to air this game, because it really wasn't that significant a game in the Bears 1985 season, but I'm glad they did! I have several copies of this game on DVD and this is the best quality I've seen by far.

They were claiming that William Perry was the heaviest person to score a TD in the NFL. The year before this game Joe Jacoby recovered a fumble against the Vikings in the endzone for a TD. Not sure who was heavier but both were well over 300.
Look at it again. They said he was the heaviest man to ever score a touchdown off a _set play_ .

For as good as the 85 Bears were, opponents were able to get to McMahon, regularly. 43 sacks on the season is a lot to give up for a run first offense

Watching this game again, I am tempted to rate it as the “best” regular season game for the Bears in 1985, in terms of a competitive and meaningful game. But for Zorn’s complete inability to hit an open receiver in the 4th quarter, the Bears may have lost-it was really close. Other games from 1985 ranked: 49ers=Revenge; Vikings MNF=Comeback; Cowboys=Annihilation; Tampa (both Games)=Sleep Walking through first halfs (but Wilder and Deberg gutsy performances); GB (MNF)=Fridge Hype starts; Lions (in Detroit)=Most Massive Hit on QB I have ever seen; Miami=Pride (Buddy using Marshall to cover Moore in first half) Before the Fall; Then a bunch of filler snoozer games.
Also, scratching my head at the NFL schedule for the Bears in 85. They only had one division game after week 10, and had played GB both times in weeks 7 and 9. Playing almost back-to-back doesn’t provide enough time to adjust and for injuries and recovery to play out, so it’s basically the same game each time. As good as this game was, could have been even better in December, with a huge build-up.

I was at this game. One of the best games I ever attended. Intensity was at an almost all-time high. Loved the hit on Suhey by Kenny Stills. I could hear it all the way up in the 52nd row in the north end zone. Incredible!

It began with Coaches Forrest Gregg and Mike Ditka. Their relationship set the tone. They never once shook hands after a game. It was run off the field and ignore the other guy. I think Ditka had more hatred for Gregg and the Packers than Gregg had for the Ditka and the Bears to begin with. But the way games were played between the two teams back then, it soon grew to all time intensity I haven’t seen since in the NFL. Only thing that remotely resembles that old rivalry from back then in today’s NFL would be Steelers / Browns.

1:25:05 - Look here and you will see a rarity. Gary Fencik got his hands on the ball carrier but did not bring him down. Fencik was one of the best tacklers in history and usually, if he could get to you, if he could get a hand on you, you went down. Give Jesse Clark credit for that.
