    NieR:Automata was the first game in the series I played and I absolutely loved it. I decided to make a video on my favorite boss in the game seeing as there's no info out there! I've been working on this video for about 4 days now and am exhausted. I wish I could of spent more time on it but I wanted to finish this project before Mass Effect Andromeda came out. Let me know if you want to see more NieR content in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

    Hey, man. Nice video. There is a couple of things you may want to know. Simone is a reference to Simone de Beauvoir the great Feminist, who was the lover to Jean Paul Sartre. They stuck together during all their lives.
    However, Sartre was some kind of an asshole. His personality was very self-centered and his existentialism took him on a permanent adventure to experience different emotions, pleasures and perceptions which usually involved others.
    They idea of "I want him to look at me" is a reference to the philosophy of the other of Sartre and the existentialists, which Simone was part of. The idea of the "other's gaze" refers to the need that every I needs of a not-I to fully realize its existence and being. Everyone need of other to find justification or purpose in its life, which we get through different relationships. The main example is love, which means that someone gaze has freely chosen you as the best object of this world and looks up for you as such. Real love, for Sartre, exists when both individuals has freely chosen each other as justification for both existences.
    Sartre was really excessive in his endeavor, which meant that he permanently had intercourses with different persons. This french man really believed on what now days we know as "poly-love", which for his own philosophy putted his loved one in danger. He didn't really cared, for his conclusion was that every human relationship ends as a disaster.
    This point is really discussed on the feminist circles, for contemporary feminism believes and practices free-love, the exploration of sexuality and the deconstruction of old love relationships, which sometimes mean having multiple sexual partners at the same time that you only love one person without constraints or rules. This was very much Sartre and Simone's relationship. However, many people, me included, believe that Simone suffered greatly of this relation. Her first work, the novel L'invitée (She Came to Stay), comments on the life that both of them had while living with all Sartre's sexual partners. The maddening circumstance of loving someone and failing to be the perfect object for his or her gaze. What it means to be left as a unjustified existence which fails to find meaning on those who love?
    Automata greatly comment on this issues through that Arc and almost the entire story. The quest for meaning and the struggle to find it within the illusive other. The eternal fighting and tragedies that they implicate through the references to class struggle of Marx and Engels, and the structure of the conscience which is only achieved through the structure of a world of war with others (that subtle but profound reference to Hegel and his philosophy of the Master and Slave on A2's Arc): loved ones, enemies, friends, companions, the ugly and beauty, and so on.
    I hope you find this somewhat interesting. See ya!

      I'm currently writing a Poetics article using Nier: Automata, and this is one of the things I'm talking about. Simone says that she did research on the old world in order to figure out what "beauty" was, so if you look at her comments about ornamentation and the fact that she specifically wears a mask, I think it's highly plausible that she read "The Second Sex" (or part of it) and what we're seeing is a horrendous misunderstanding of de Beauvoir's original work (in the same way that the machines misconstrue the text of Romeo and Juliet). (Of course, the point I'm making with it is that de Beauvoir's intention doesn't matter; what matters is how the text performs in this iteration of itself, in this context.)
      "Makeup and jewels were also used for this petrification of the body and face. The function of dress and ornaments is highly complex; for some primitives, it had a sacred character; but its most usual role was to complete woman’s metamorphosis into an idol. An equivocal idol: man wanted her erotic, for her beauty to be part of that of flowers and fruits; but she also had to be smooth, hard, eternal like a stone. The role of dress is both to link the body more closely to and to wrest it away from nature, to give a necessarily set artifice to palpitating life. Woman was turned into plant, panther, diamond, or mother-of-pearl by mingling flowers, furs, precious stones, shells, and feathers on her body; she perfumed herself so as to smell of roses and lilies: but feathers, silk, pearls, and perfumes also worked to hide the animal rawness from its flesh and odor. She painted her mouth and her cheeks to acquire a mask’s immobile solidity; her gaze was imprisoned in the thickness of kohl and mascara, it was no longer anything but her eyes’ shimmering ornamentation; braided, curled, or sculpted, her hair lost its
      troublesome vegetal mystery. In the embellished woman, Nature was present but captive, shaped by a human will in accordance with man’s desire" (de Beauvoir 211).

      Hey this is an old comment, but just to add, Simone de Beauvoir was also really into what makes a person a woman, and was of the opinion that someone becomes a woman, and that being female was a product of socialization and roles. Which ties in with Nier’s Simone’s obsession with beauty and making herself look feminine.

    *SPOILERS AHEAD, READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!*
    14:40 *"History is doomed to repeat itself."*
    And that is the cycle of suffering throughout the whole game as one of the themes. Just like with the whole Yorha Project and how 2B had to kill 9S over and over again prevent him from knowing too much (especially when she said; "It always ends like this"). What you said in the video describes 2B's quote perfectly;
    *"Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle...and wonder if we'll ever get the chance to kill him."*

    Hey I think I might know what the "treasures" refer to in the context of the game, I think they actually do not refer to emotions, but refer more to philosophies, unlike Nier the original, a large amount of bosses and characters are named after famous philosophical writers and I think this is actually meant to mean something. One example is that in the cutscene where it refers to "One machine treasured his older sibling" I originally thought it was referring to Eve, but on completing my first watch of a playthrough, I realized it must actually refer to the cult of machines with buckets on their head that worship their "Big Brother". 9S also makes note of how when a machine is shown that their philosophy fails, they do not actually learn from it and try again with no changes.
    What I mean is that I think machines do not actually have trouble emoting, but they do have trouble understanding it, and thus turn heavily to philosophy to try and understand their inner emotional workings better but often get incredible tunnel vision.

    • @SNOWSOS
      @SNOWSOS  7 лет назад +7

      Oh that's interesting. I guess my question is what would the treasures like "treasured family above all else" mean in terms of philosophy. Some of the treasures are oddly specific and too simple to be obviously and one philosophy. Also the specific cutscene in this video at 10:05 the second machines "treasured its older sister" refers to a side quest where you go find her missing sister that went looking for parts for her sister and gets lost. I would argue that these instances are more likely to be tied to mimicking an emotion/obsession or an aspect of one. I think the machines use of philosophy is used to show them become more human like personally (although I'm not sure I would word it like that).

    • @PregnantAdamSandler
      @PregnantAdamSandler 7 лет назад +6

      Treasure family above all else to me seems to strongly refer to the robots in the forest kingdom as the now deceased forest king referred to the kingdom as a family at one point. Also why do you think the older sibling refers to the sidequest? I just wanna hear your reasoning since there are at least two instances in the main story of machines valuing a sibling, Eve, and the Big Brother robots. And I could indeed be wrong about the philosophy, a quick look at Pascal's wiki page doesn't seem to show many similarities in his philosophy with the Pascal in game

    Edit: I can't put the blame on JP though, it's not his fault he is the way he is, it's not like he is out there leading these woman-bots on, he's not trying to hurt them, hell he probably doesn't even realize that they're fighting desperately for his attention just like they don't realize he is also silently fighting an obsession within himself trying to find answers to a questions he'll probably never be able to resolve until he finally gives in like so many other machines have.

    Thank you for clearing things up for me.
    When my cousin showed me the opera boss, the theme is amazing, but on the comment section all i read was;
    He won't look my way. And the Notice me Senpai song Neir version...
    So i thought;
    Maybe the boss wanted to look pretty for someone.
    As she says during thr fight; beautiful.
    Some comments said that the boss has such a sad story...
    That's what brought me here like a month after my cousin showed me the boss fight and the comment section. All i have to say is that i also feel bad for simone.
    People want affection from the person they love and like Simone, the persons would do the same, trying to look beautiful for that person, which will lead to obsession...
    And i feel bad too for those people. All they want to accomplish is to feel, to be loved. To be with that person, but Alas, sometimes that doesn't happen...
    Many people who are obsessed, madly in love cannot see the truth, that they cannot win their affection...
    And that obsessed person can do horrible things, they would do anything to win their heart...
    Like that saying;
    If you can't be mine, no one will...
    Which leads to a horrible event...
    Sadly, it happened to Simone...
    She did all that just to win him, but she didn't and turn into that.
    Her story is relatable to us humans...

    "Devour the body of an android to gain eternal beauty."
    That sounds a lot like a major plot point of the anime "Casshern's Sins", where many robots believed eating the flesh of the android Casshern would spare them from the "ruin".
    Actually there are a lot of similarities between the world of "Nier Automata" and that of "Casshern's Sins": a distant future where the dominant life form are humanoid robots displaying a wide range of behaviors and philosophies, a smaller number of generally more powerful androids and humanity on the brink of extinction.

    The three machines from Jean Paul's quests eventually become:
    The one that treasures its family is Pascal. (duty-irresponsibility) he asked me to delete his memories
    The one that treasures its sibling is Eve (love-hate) his hate was to the point of frenzy, there`s a line while fighting him with the jp dub that there are no subtitles to it. gotta find it... (imi ga nai?) means "there's no point"
    And Simone ... as in Simone de Beauvoir (dependency-narcissism)
    All three fall into nihilism and eventually become bosses althou I still havent reach the point where I fight Pascal? I at the point where I erase his memories but I am guessing he's next.
    Jean Paul essentially has sown the seeds of most of the misfortune in the story.

    • @SNOWSOS
      @SNOWSOS  7 лет назад +4

      I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. The machine mentioned are alluding to other side quests. For example the Machine that treasures it's older sibling is referencing the quest where you're asked to find the missing sister of a machine. The younger sister went got lost trying to find parts to fix her older sister. They also visually look like the machines in that cutscene. If you actually watch the extended cutscene past where I pause it it shows Adam(says he treasured hate) and he's drawn quite differently. The machines in those cutscenes are drawn to resemble their real world counter parts which is why they can't be Eve or Pascal because they're all the common small round headed bots.

    It’s no doubt that they took inspiration from Magnificent Rose, which was a short film featured in Memories. Long story short, there’s a humanoid machine that uses a hologram to essentially “mask” itself as a beautiful opera singer in a red dress. She’s a bit obsessive, and had a nack for luring people in with “visions” of their fantasies, which are just holograms.

    If a man was interested in a woman he would formally visit her residence, asking to see her and often bring gifts on every visit.
    If a woman was interested in the man she would go to lengths to make herself beautiful, apply perfumes, curl her hair, apply make up. It was especially important that she makes the man wait briefly knowing that the woman was preparing herself, as its an indication to the man that shes interested.

    Haven’t played the game. Was going out of my way not to spoil myself but, after listening to the Opera Boss theme song for the past few weeks and seeing the fight, I couldn’t resist the curiosity.
    And goddam, this is amazing. Does this level of writing and detail appear throughout the game? Or is it just this character? This really touched me.

    The whole moral of the story which is a message for the ladies... "Don't become a p*rnstar in order to be loved by hungry men sexually"
    because it will destroy you!.
    Beauty doesn't wins love
    Beauty is an option to express love.
    Love..... is a sacrifice and acceptance from the person and for who you truly are.
    Basically.... just because you are "Average" (Which Idk why people think is an issue)
    doesn't means you have to be a Carnivore as Simone to become more beautiful, cuz that's where the P*rn industry comes from.

    After all your efforts, it's pointless. In all your hard work, in the end, you gain nothing. Sacrificing your friends and yourself to one person so that he or she can recognize you. But all of it is pointless. She only wanted to be recognized by the man she really loved. So, she puts a lot of effort into that one man she loves so much. She changed herself to be more beautiful because that's what she knew about how to be loved by someone. Too bad she realized that she couldn't win his love when it was too late. After all she has done to her friends and other machine life forms, because of that man. What is love for a machine life form? We all know that machines don't have feelings. It is just their program to know something, adapt to things, or upgrade. My thoughts have two sides. One thing that favors Simone is that she is the first machine who has developed feelings, even if she's a machine and not a human. And one side says that it's impossible because machines are supposed to adapt and upgrade depending on their needs. Gosh! I don't know! Because of Simone, I'm hoping that there will be more games like this that have a machine falling in love and looking for an answer. But. What is love if you are a machine like them? If I'm a machine looking for love, there is no doubt that I'll be like Simone. I was looking for an answer and it took so long to find an answer that I regret everything. Feelings of a machine is so complicated. I can't. Years have passed, but her background story makes me nuts.

    I always ask myself who's the idiot that gave machines the ability to feel emotions, but not understand them, why on Earth would you give emotions to an object or even make it capable of developing them?

      Community contributions are set to on for this video so you could actually click on the gear and add your own German subtitles if that's what you mean (which would be greatly appreciated). But if you're asking if you can re-upload the video on your channel with a German translation, I would be against that.

    all very nice, but without all of these minors details, i knew she knew nothing about beauty and love. the striking thing is that her immature state of being for me was an obvious exitentialist comment on human existence and capitalist love.
    check erich fromm "the art of love"
    this and the jean-paul quest, the religious suicides and the desert boss going on about eternal pain were the strongnparts of the game.
    sadly, the hectic combat destroyed those moments for me. ex machina e.g. is much better for these topics. they can better be handled in anfilm.
