- Creating Watchtower of China was a labour of love. I say labour because we, meaning my crew and I, throughout three consecutive summers, visited over seventy cities and travelled countless thousands of kilometers. Everywhere we went, we found ourselves channelling the powerful energy of this great land to find the strength and inspiration to continue our quest along what became life-changing for all of us. When we initially gathered together we were a film crew. By the time we were done, three years later, we had become a family.
I say love, because what we have created is more than just a film. It is a declaration of our love for this Country.
When I set out on this project I wanted to create a visual tribute to China - an honest observation of daily life. Not a surface travelog, but a real and raw representation of the cultural history. An honoring of Chinese culture, identity, and the complex and varied way of living that spans the enormity of the Chinese territory. A window on the dedication and discipline, the craftsmanship and hard work of the Chinese people. They have an energy of moving forward together as they draw power and inspiration from a culture that looks back over thousands of years, yet rushes fearlessly towards a bold future.
I started to feel this intense energy, as though this cultural pride and determination were now moving through me and my camera. The experience of this film buried itself so deeply within me that I can still feel the hard day’s work in my muscles.
It couldn’t have come together without the help of my dear friends, especially Jolien Snyers and Ricky Choy (did you spot Ricky in the film? She’s in multiple shots and sings in the very last taxi shot!)
It is one of my proudest accomplishments.

I just don't understand the talent. This is ridiculous - you are so incredibly talented mate!!! To visualize a shot, frame rate, angles of in camera movement, to post production, sound design. It's just... masterpiece, no other words. Inspiring to us Filmmakers.

Pure magic.
This brings me to tears. The humanity, the deep understanding of what it is to be us is what blows me away about Leonardo’s work. Yes, he’s technically leagues above most of us when it comes to capturing and editing. But it’s what he is showing us that is true testament to his talent. Not one frame is accidental or wasted, and all are imbued with depth, story and meaning. This is 21st century storytelling at its finest.

Nothing to say, just a masterpiece. This guy is a real genius. It's a shame that the video, which took so much effort and time, received so few views. I hope RUclips recommendations will someday eliminate this injustice.
I was looking at the metrics for the video from Turkey, and it only managed to reach more than 5 million views in the very long term. Maybe the same will happen with this video from China.

The essence of modern Chinese society: Conflict and balance. Rich VS Poor; Developed VS Undeveloped; Modern culture VS Ancient traditions; Technology VS Spirit; Western VS Eastern; Government VS People. She is so old, so there is so much in her. There is conflict, and also balance within. Her people may be struggled now, but this ancient culture will find her balance. Things have always been this way.
I spent time studying traditional Chinese culture, communism philosophy theories and taking modern western college education. I have traveled around Asia and America. This video put my lifetime discoveries into 4 minutes, and it's so accurate. What a masterpiece.

I can't tell you how much I rate your art, the depth of the knowing of film making is an incredible for a layman like me. I remember when I saw the movie of Turkey for the first time, my eyes were watering because of the climbing tension and the amount of high intensity, this happened again when I saw this movie. If someone can create an impression like this, it is pure art for me. Thank you for your passion and hard work and for the video, it's beautiful in every way! :))

I always wondered if you would top the Turkey video, you did it in a legendary way.
I remember watching Watchtower of Turkey 7 years ago and it completely blew my mind. This new technique was so unique that other people started replicating it too, they're all really good in their respective ways too but we all know you were the pioneer on this platform. We see it in movies too but not to this extent. I can't believe you produce a Chinese version of it, can't wait to see more of it! ❤️ I can't imagine the effort that went into making this, must be gruelling 😭 Also I really love the occasional silence in between transitions.
Everything is in harmony and visually appealing. A grandmaster, a genius and his art. You are the inspiration of filmmakers. You did it again after a long time. A film that we will always look back and constantly find new details, learn new techniques on cinematography. Phenomenal work.
The thing that's insane about your videos is that all the visuals (every. single. shot.) are like snippets from memories of the places you visited and everything you saw over there. And then you pace it all to a stunning track and go pretty much freestyle on the edit. Doesn't look pre-planned, more like instinctive. Absolutely masterful 👑.

This is the best travel video i ever saw on yt. Really the father of travel films.
love how true real and authentic this is, its good to see something so down to earth, really refreshing ! keep putting out more man people these days need such things and be shown that the real image is important not a only good side showing one, me included . not that this would be super bad, so many good sides too, but its so good to see something real, sometimes, this was jsut a great 4 min impression of the country and what it feels liek!

UNBELIEVABLE. I always wanted to see a video with this shooting & editing style, but produced by a whole crew and not only a "one man band" travel filmmaker. I love the fact that this is a three years project and not only one week thing. Nowadays "travel filmmaking world" should definitely give you the credits you deserve! Watchtower of Turkey and Morocco are still fresh videos, not getting old!📹
