Nevermind, just got it. only thing different i did was setting two tracks to stereo for the destination tracks for bouncing. Youre videos are way better than the manual!
I have the Zoom R8, everything you say applies to it also, only that I have only two inputs and 8 outputs, but I am a 1 Man Band, I do all the instruments in my Music, so its great for that, but I do not use it for anything but a Tape Recorder, and you showed me how I can start using this the way it was intended, so thanks, the Light Wizzard will use some of the things you have taught here.

Hey Norm - no worries and thanks for the comments - much appreciated. Part 4 along in the next few weeks as soon as I can get round to it. These are perfect for band use. I am now using mine taking a direct feed off my Mackie CFX12 MkII mixer and it's working really well - one feed off each channel of the desk to an input on the R24 giving me a multichannel mix of our rehearsals and gigs whilst still allowing us to use the desk for front of house - superb results so far, very happy.
What a great series. I have the R8 and all this info is the same for it. There was not much on the r8 like you have for the r24. I was able to do a recording the 1st day. but struggled when I needed to cancel or go over a recording because I messed up, and this video hit that on the head using the marks and punch functions. I hope you can do a video on how to download the sd card or right from the machine to computer and burn on to a cd. I have some final mix tracks but now need to figure out how to transfer it to computer and burn onto a cd for gifts. Keep up the awesome work, very, very helpful
Hey man - no worries and thanks for the comment. As for the transfer of tracks - I just take the SD card out of the R24, put it in my laptop, drag and drop the Master Tracks (identified by their file name) and then burn to CD using iTunes or Media Player - very straightforward.
Good question - yes, you can. Bouncing is just another way of creating a master track but on a track other than the master track (if that makes sense?!!). The destination track for the bounce will be "listening" to the tracks armed for playback (in green) and will preserve any panning and EQ (as far as I'm aware) in the bounce. For any FX to be included in the bounce you will need the record signal set to wet (I think - just check the manual to be sure).
awesome videos! great work and clear explanations! For me when you described the insert effect, is you should say it moves from track to track and you can't have it on more than one track. so, whatever track you put it on and including the master, if you apply it to another track it moves away from that previous track To be that would be easier to understand how it works period but great job on these videos! And a great song!

Mastering Effects on the R24 are a type of Insert Effect which is to be the subject of my next video (Part 4 in this series). In short, mastering effects polish your final mix using a combination of EQ, compressors and other modules to make your mix come alive and "pop" if that makes sense. They can also boost the level of your final mix depending on how you use them. The effects can give your mix (cont.)..
...(cont.) a real spatial, almost 3D quality that is a little hard to explain but very easy to appreciate once you hear it. They can, of course, totally screw things up for you and leave you with a muddy mess that sounds awful - it all depends on which effect you use and how you adjust it. All will be explained in Part 4 so keep an eye out for it and I hope this helps a little.
Excellent mate, I have an R8 but you've saved my a lot of time and trouble. I would really like some kind of in depth analysis of the Mastering Effects and what they actually do to the finished mix, is there anywhere you can point me for this kind of info?
This is very nice - I have problems understanding "loop" and "trim" I know what it is, I need those functions. I can not make it work on my Zoom R8 though. So Ill just record the whole song and use punch in to correct errors.
"loop" is where you set a recorded file / sound to keep repeating over and over, "trim" is where you can cut the parts of the beginning or end of the file you have recorded. Not very sophisticated and probably one of the weaker areas of the R24's abilities - better off using a DAW in my opinion if you want to really get into editing files / tracks in a big way.

Hello - Recently I bought a Zoom R24, becasue I wanted an easy to use recorder for band practice. I mostly bought the R24 because I saw how pleased you were with it. Since I have been using it, I have been recording 45 minute long practice sessions which have about 10 songs at a time. Is there a way to split the project files down to single tracks, so you can master single tracks on the Zoom? All the ways I have seen have been very time consuming, and I was curios that if you disrupted the makeup of the project file folder , that it would not recognize the split up files. Thanks in advance, and thank you for swaying me to purchase the Zoom R24 - it is a super little machine!! Cheers!!
Hey Kevin - thanks for the comment / question and glad you are pleased with your purchase - I use it in exactly the same way as you and it works really well for that application. With reference to your question - you have two options, either create a new project for each new song (probably the easiest way) and if you use the "Continue" option in the "New Project" menu rather than "Reset" then all of your settings will carry over into the new project without having to do them all again (handy if you are leaving the same instruments plugged into the same inputs for example). Your other option is to do one large project containing multiple songs and press the "Mark" button either as you record or afterwards on playback between each track - this allows you to go quickly to the start of each song but will unfortunately still treat the entire project as one song so you can either "Trim" the project to the start and end of each song (far too much hassle as you will have to make multiple copeis of the project so as not to delete any songs) or ship it over to a DAW and chop it up there on your computer. Personally, I favour starting each new song as a new project and using the "Continue" function - takes a few seconds and works really well. I then rename them into something meaningful when I get them home. Hope this helps!
I got mine to record live gigs, we don't have a drummer and only need 6 channels, but wanted to send the vocalist a separate send for his monitor with a bit of guitar in his mix, but realised there is no aux out.. can you create a separate mix to the headphone send? Thnx for this set of informative videos....they're an enormous help! I have one question which is driving me nuts and I can't believe I can't do this on the R24! My question is....How do you delete unwanted audio between tunes??...not just one track at a time but from entire projects...8 tracks in all! I recorded an entire rehearsal (8 tracks) last week and left the recorder on the entire time. I have a lot of useless audio between tunes...which I need to get rid of! Back in the old days you just cut the tape and spliced! How can I do this with the R 24??
The short answer is "you can't" (well, at least not very easily). The editing facilities on the R24 are quite limited (it's one of the short-comings of the device) and it will only really allow you to trim audio from the beginning or end of your project using the 'trim' function. A work-around is to make multiple copies of your project and then trim from the beginning and end of the project to the exact section you want - do this once for every song and you're sorted. Probably much easier to dump the whole lot into a DAW (I use Reaper) and do it from there. Hope this helps and sorry for the delay in replying - damn that new Google+ comments system!!!
I've hit a bit of a dilemma with bouncing which I don't think it can be resolved. I have bounced 4 tracks onto 1 track/channel which is guitars for the first verse of a song, done the chorus on another track and now want to record another 4 tracks for verse 2 and also bounce that to the same track/channel as the first verse. It's pretty much having 2 bounced tracks on the same channel, they are just at different times. Whenever I put the 2nd bounce on, even though they are at seperate times and shouldn't over write the 1st bounce. It somehow wipes it and also vice versa. If I have the 2nd bounce(verse 2) start at let's say 2.30m and add the 1st bounce(verse 1) at 0.30- 1.30m. Soon as I add the 1st bounce even though it shouldn't affect the 2nd due to different times, it clears it and will only let you have one bounce per track/channel instead of multiple.
+Mattube1983 OK - phew, that took several reads to get it in my head! Whilst I'm not sure I can help you with this, you might also try (as a workaround) mixing down whatever tracks you want to a Master track and then re-assigning this to Track 1, 2, whatever. Since a mix down is very similar to a Bounce in principle, this may be another way of achieving what it is that you want to achieve. Good luck!
There is a mute function that is default that you have to turn off to hear the destination tracks, he explains it at the end of the section on bouncing. The info on the destination track is still there, just muted, that’s my guess. It’s in the bounce menu.
If you turn the mute to listen then you can bounce 8 tracks to two including the info on 7 and 8. Watch till the very end of bouncing in the video, it’s the last thing he discusses.
Hi there! Thanx for these videoes! I got mine and it working out to my liking. I'm gonna love the auto punch in/out feature. I tried trimming a couple of tracks yeaterday and it seems that if you trim the start of a track, the track moves backwards so to speak, and no longer follows the music like before. The trimming feature seems to be nonreversible. Anyone with the same observation?
Thanks for that Christian and appreciate the comments - always good to know the vids are helping folk with their music. As for your trimming query, I must be honest and say that I do very little editing on the R24 itself as I find this to be one its main limitations. If you want to do this kind of stuff then a DAW (I use Reaper) is far superior. As you have noticed - it all goes a bit weird sometimes!!
No - marks just allow you to navigate straight to a specific part of your project. To get rid of unwanted stuff at the beginning and end of recordings, you would instead use the "Trim" function.
Your labor of love is so very appreciated Topdazzle. Thank you. Would you recommend getting the FS01 footswitch, if not punching in and out, but to record and stop during a recording session? Or is it simply not necessary? Dennis
+acousticomp Hi Dennis - it all depends on your set up and how much you will use the punch function, whether you're on your own with your hands full, etc. - it could certainly be convenient but I don't use that function much so I've never bothered with it.
You didn't mention the footswitch option for punch in. This is vital for guitar... not auto punch, it's too much work. I hope it is footswitch capable? I must know before I purchase it
Question: when bouncing tracks, can you also set the pan levels per track so you get some stereo effects (f.ex. guitar a bit to the right and voice to the left). I suppose this can be done with the effect button on the track prior to bouncing or creating the master?
I have a zoom r8. There the a-b repeat function has a short delay at B before looping from A. This is annoying. Does the r24 have it too or is it perfectly looping?
How much preroll time does it give before your Auto Punch In point? Is the amount of Preroll time adjustable? If so, how do you adjust it? On the Tascam DP-008EX, for example, you are limited to only 2 seconds preroll time. Basically, impossible to use. 2 Seconds is not enough time to prepare or hear the part of the song that is coming up. And that cannot be changed.
As much pre-roll as you want as you just start the track playing back from whatever position you want then when it reaches the punch-in point you have set, it starts recording until it reaches the punch-out point.
Thanks for the recording knowledge Topdazzle! If i import 2 trk audio with a known tempo. Will the audio start from bar 1.1? I want to find a sync/midi work around. I dont want to use a computer.
topdazzle how do you copy/paste several bars (guitar parts of a chorus section) in order to duplicate such same bars to other parts of the song. So I don’t necessarily have to record the same chorus section all over again?
Great job, thank you for your fantastic effort!. I'm from Poland and I have intention to buy ne R24. But for me, very important is the punch in/punch out function. So I have a question, which are very significant to me. During play track marked on red (possible recording), can I hear that track before pressing the Rec button in punch in/punch out activity? For example, when I want to puch in a single line of lyrics, can I hear the previous text from that track?
Hey - thanks for the comment. If I understand your question correctly you are asking if you can hear the lyrics on playback up to the point that you punch in (so you know where you are in the song and when to sing the new line of lyrics)? If that's right then the answer is "yes". If, for example, you are recording a guitar part and do a section wrong (out of tune or play a bum note, whatever) you can go in to the track afterwards and overdub this bad part with a new part that is in tune or is playing the right notes by using the punch in/out function. All that happens is it starts to play back the old track until it reaches the punch in mark, then goes into record mode until it reaches the punch out mark, then carries on playing back as normal. If you have other tracks of music recorded (drums, bass, etc.) you can also have these playing back while you do the punch - that way you know exactly where you are in the song. I hope I have understood your question correctly and that this answers it for you! Best wishes, Darren

Question. When i try and bounce my drum tracks: tracks 1-6 are drums (some are in stereo and some mono). Problem is theyre all lit orange and they wont turn to green or record to stereo on tracks 7 and 8. is there a setting im missing?
Great vid...I have a question though… Using my guitar through input one it only seems to let me record on to track one when I then want to play a lead guitar line onto track 2 while having track one played back there’s no sound only when I unplug it from input one and put it input 2 to do I get sound????? I wanna stay in the same input but just overdub the different parts on top of each other via the different tracks
What you are describing is exactly the way it is designed to work, there is no way to route inputs to different tracks - they only map to the track they are connected to. To achieve what you want to do, just use the “swap” function to move your recorded guitar part to another track - “swap” your recorded track with a blank track (it doesn’t matter which one but go with Track 2 if that is your preference). Your recorded part will now be available on Track 2 and Track 1 will be blank allowing you to record on to it with your guitar plugged in to Input 1.

@@topdazzle forgot to mention if you are recording 2 guitar players for example or a bass and a guitar at the same time won’t only one of them will be able to use the input with the hi-z switch ,which is optimal for those instruments and the other guys going to have to use input 2 which doesn’t have the hi-z feature....Want that make his recording slightly inferior?
Hey TopDazzle, I have reached the full recording capacity on my SD card. 'I am out of recording space' is there a way to clean SD card to delete unwanted space without deleting part of my project?

There's no need to delete, just record a new take and then depending on how you have your project set up from the start (in either "overwrite" or "always new") your old take will either be overwritten with your new one or a new one will be created next to it, preserving the old one in case you ever feel like going back to it.
Is it possible to record the drum pads 'live' or in real time recording as opposed to recording patterns? I have not been able to find any info about doing so in the manual or from others online.
Not at all Gerald - it's all digital so each copy is identical to the first generation with no degradation in quality whatsoever and this includes bouncing.
Hey bro, When you do a bounce multiple tracks down to 1 or 2, you mentioned that you can adjust faders in real time during the bounce, Question; after setting the fader during the bounce and you got it just right for the remaining of the bounce recording, now after the bounce is recorded, when you play back the bounce track will the recording need to be bounced again to compensate for the adjusting of the faders? what I'm saying is after you adjusted the faders during the bounce now do you have to re-record the bounce with the new fader settings for a consistent bounce track? Also, say you got 3 bounce tracks, can you bounce down those 3 or 4 bounce tracks to 1 bounce track? Yes I have the R8 is why these questions. Thanks man.
Hey Billy - whilst I don't use the bounce function very often (24 tracks is more than enough), my understanding is that you can bounce as many times as you like - the nice thing is that you won't suffer any degradation in quality either like you would with an analogue bounce. Just remember to set your bounce settings up properly depending on whether you want the destination track included in the bounce or not (default setting is "not"). As long as you have the record setting set to "always new" you will get a new bounce track every time you perform a bounce - otherwise your bounces will be overwritten each time. To answer your question, yes, moving the faders will effect the levels in the bounce and, depending on how much you move them, you may hear this in the final bounce - best to get them set up how you want them, do the bounce and then only move them if you have to (to avoid clipping for example) and, only then, by a small amount. Also, if levels are important to you and you need more accuracy then don't forget that all the faders do is to assign a numerical level value to each track between 1 and 100 - if you go into the "track" menu and then select "fader" you can check what this value is for each track, make a note of it and then set it manually using the cursor keys rather than the fader slider - just remember that the position of the fader will no longer correspond to the numerical value of the track but all you need to do to get this back is move the fader up and down to "catch" the value and remind the R24 whereabouts the fader is on its course of travel (hope this makes sense).

All the ways I have seen have been very time consuming, and I was curios that if you disrupted the makeup of the project file folder , that it would not recognize the split up files. Hey Kevin - thanks for the comment / question and glad you are pleased with your purchase - I use it in exactly the same way as you and it works really well for that application. With reference to your question - you have two options, either create a new project for each new song (probably the easiest way) and if you use the "Continue" option in the "New Project" menu rather than "Reset" then all of your settings will carry over into the new project without having to do them all again (handy if you are leaving the same instruments plugged into the same inputs for example). Your other option is to do one large project containing multiple songs and press the "Mark" button either as you record or afterwards on playback between each track - this allows you to go quickly to the start of each song but will unfortunately still treat the entire project as one song so you can either "Trim" the project to the start and end of each song (far too much hassle as you will have to make multiple copeis of the project so as not to delete any songs) or ship it over to a DAW and chop it up there on your computer. Personally, I favour starting each new song as a new project and using the "Continue" function - takes a few seconds and works really well. I then rename them into something meaningful when I get them home. Hope this helps!

Thnx for this set of informative videos....they're an enormous help! I have one question which is driving me nuts and I can't believe I can't do this on the R24! My question is....How do you delete unwanted audio between tunes??...not just one track at a time but from entire projects...8 tracks in all! I recorded an entire rehearsal (8 tracks) last week and left the recorder on the entire time. I have a lot of useless audio between tunes...which I need to get rid of! Back in the old days you just cut the tape and spliced! How can I do this with the R 24??
The short answer is "you can't" (well, at least not very easily). The editing facilities on the R24 are quite limited (it's one of the short-comings of the device) and it will only really allow you to trim audio from the beginning or end of your project using the 'trim' function. A work-around is to make multiple copies of your project and then trim from the beginning and end of the project to the exact section you want - do this once for every song and you're sorted. Probably much easier to dump the whole lot into a DAW (I use Reaper) and do it from there. Hope this helps and sorry for the delay in replying - damn that new Google+ comments system!!!

I've hit a bit of a dilemma with bouncing which I don't think it can be resolved. I have bounced 4 tracks onto 1 track/channel which is guitars for the first verse of a song, done the chorus on another track and now want to record another 4 tracks for verse 2 and also bounce that to the same track/channel as the first verse. It's pretty much having 2 bounced tracks on the same channel, they are just at different times. Whenever I put the 2nd bounce on, even though they are at seperate times and shouldn't over write the 1st bounce. It somehow wipes it and also vice versa. If I have the 2nd bounce(verse 2) start at let's say 2.30m and add the 1st bounce(verse 1) at 0.30- 1.30m. Soon as I add the 1st bounce even though it shouldn't affect the 2nd due to different times, it clears it and will only let you have one bounce per track/channel instead of multiple.
+Mattube1983 OK - phew, that took several reads to get it in my head! Whilst I'm not sure I can help you with this, you might also try (as a workaround) mixing down whatever tracks you want to a Master track and then re-assigning this to Track 1, 2, whatever. Since a mix down is very similar to a Bounce in principle, this may be another way of achieving what it is that you want to achieve. Good luck!
There is a mute function that is default that you have to turn off to hear the destination tracks, he explains it at the end of the section on bouncing. The info on the destination track is still there, just muted, that’s my guess. It’s in the bounce menu.
If you turn the mute to listen then you can bounce 8 tracks to two including the info on 7 and 8. Watch till the very end of bouncing in the video, it’s the last thing he discusses.
Hi there! Thanx for these videoes! I got mine and it working out to my liking. I'm gonna love the auto punch in/out feature. I tried trimming a couple of tracks yeaterday and it seems that if you trim the start of a track, the track moves backwards so to speak, and no longer follows the music like before. The trimming feature seems to be nonreversible. Anyone with the same observation?

As for your trimming query, I must be honest and say that I do very little editing on the R24 itself as I find this to be one its main limitations. If you want to do this kind of stuff then a DAW (I use Reaper) is far superior. As you have noticed - it all goes a bit weird sometimes!!
To top dazzle: thank you a very informative series on the r24. Can you use marks to erase noises at the beginning and end of a recording?
No - marks just allow you to navigate straight to a specific part of your project. To get rid of unwanted stuff at the beginning and end of recordings, you would instead use the "Trim" function.

+acousticomp Hi Dennis - it all depends on your set up and how much you will use the punch function, whether you're on your own with your hands full, etc. - it could certainly be convenient but I don't use that function much so I've never bothered with it.

You didn't mention the footswitch option for punch in. This is vital for guitar... not auto punch, it's too much work. I hope it is footswitch capable? I must know before I purchase it

Question: when bouncing tracks, can you also set the pan levels per track so you get some stereo effects (f.ex. guitar a bit to the right and voice to the left). I suppose this can be done with the effect button on the track prior to bouncing or creating the master?
I have a zoom r8. There the a-b repeat function has a short delay at B before looping from A. This is annoying. Does the r24 have it too or is it perfectly looping?
How much preroll time does it give before your Auto Punch In point? Is the amount of Preroll time adjustable? If so, how do you adjust it? On the Tascam DP-008EX, for example, you are limited to only 2 seconds preroll time. Basically, impossible to use. 2 Seconds is not enough time to prepare or hear the part of the song that is coming up. And that cannot be changed.
As much pre-roll as you want as you just start the track playing back from whatever position you want then when it reaches the punch-in point you have set, it starts recording until it reaches the punch-out point.

topdazzle how do you copy/paste several bars (guitar parts of a chorus section) in order to duplicate such same bars to other parts of the song. So I don’t necessarily have to record the same chorus section all over again?

So I have a question, which are very significant to me. During play track marked on red (possible recording), can I hear that track before pressing the Rec button in punch in/punch out activity? For example, when I want to puch in a single line of lyrics, can I hear the previous text from that track?
Hey - thanks for the comment. If I understand your question correctly you are asking if you can hear the lyrics on playback up to the point that you punch in (so you know where you are in the song and when to sing the new line of lyrics)? If that's right then the answer is "yes". If, for example, you are recording a guitar part and do a section wrong (out of tune or play a bum note, whatever) you can go in to the track afterwards and overdub this bad part with a new part that is in tune or is playing the right notes by using the punch in/out function. All that happens is it starts to play back the old track until it reaches the punch in mark, then goes into record mode until it reaches the punch out mark, then carries on playing back as normal. If you have other tracks of music recorded (drums, bass, etc.) you can also have these playing back while you do the punch - that way you know exactly where you are in the song. I hope I have understood your question correctly and that this answers it for you! Best wishes, Darren

Question. When i try and bounce my drum tracks: tracks 1-6 are drums (some are in stereo and some mono). Problem is theyre all lit orange and they wont turn to green or record to stereo on tracks 7 and 8. is there a setting im missing?
Great vid...I have a question though… Using my guitar through input one it only seems to let me record on to track one when I then want to play a lead guitar line onto track 2 while having track one played back there’s no sound only when I unplug it from input one and put it input 2 to do I get sound????? I wanna stay in the same input but just overdub the different parts on top of each other via the different tracks
What you are describing is exactly the way it is designed to work, there is no way to route inputs to different tracks - they only map to the track they are connected to. To achieve what you want to do, just use the “swap” function to move your recorded guitar part to another track - “swap” your recorded track with a blank track (it doesn’t matter which one but go with Track 2 if that is your preference). Your recorded part will now be available on Track 2 and Track 1 will be blank allowing you to record on to it with your guitar plugged in to Input 1.

You can delete other projects to free up space or transfer what you want to keep to a PC or laptop and then re-format the card
how do you delete a track IF you play wrong and Will play it again? also i dont like daw and computer very Much so is this a good thing to buy and easy to use?
There's no need to delete, just record a new take and then depending on how you have your project set up from the start (in either "overwrite" or "always new") your old take will either be overwritten with your new one or a new one will be created next to it, preserving the old one in case you ever feel like going back to it.

Not at all Gerald - it's all digital so each copy is identical to the first generation with no degradation in quality whatsoever and this includes bouncing.

When you do a bounce multiple tracks down to 1 or 2, you mentioned that you can adjust faders in real time during the bounce, Question; after setting the fader during the bounce and you got it just right for the remaining of the bounce recording, now after the bounce is recorded, when you play back the bounce track will the recording need to be bounced again to compensate for the adjusting of the faders? what I'm saying is after you adjusted the faders during the bounce now do you have to re-record the bounce with the new fader settings for a consistent bounce track?
Also, say you got 3 bounce tracks, can you bounce down those 3 or 4 bounce tracks to 1 bounce track? Yes I have the R8 is why these questions.

Hey Billy - whilst I don't use the bounce function very often (24 tracks is more than enough), my understanding is that you can bounce as many times as you like - the nice thing is that you won't suffer any degradation in quality either like you would with an analogue bounce. Just remember to set your bounce settings up properly depending on whether you want the destination track included in the bounce or not (default setting is "not"). As long as you have the record setting set to "always new" you will get a new bounce track every time you perform a bounce - otherwise your bounces will be overwritten each time. To answer your question, yes, moving the faders will effect the levels in the bounce and, depending on how much you move them, you may hear this in the final bounce - best to get them set up how you want them, do the bounce and then only move them if you have to (to avoid clipping for example) and, only then, by a small amount.
Also, if levels are important to you and you need more accuracy then don't forget that all the faders do is to assign a numerical level value to each track between 1 and 100 - if you go into the "track" menu and then select "fader" you can check what this value is for each track, make a note of it and then set it manually using the cursor keys rather than the fader slider - just remember that the position of the fader will no longer correspond to the numerical value of the track but all you need to do to get this back is move the fader up and down to "catch" the value and remind the R24 whereabouts the fader is on its course of travel (hope this makes sense).
